Field Trip - Grade 1B

G rade 1 children had gone for a field trip to Aarey Milk Dairy (Goregaon) for their on-going

UOI ‘Products’ on 18th November. They learnt about how milk goes through various processes before it is

consumed. The guide at the dairy explained the children the process of packing the milk into different

quantity packets. The children were thrilled to see so many buffaloes in the dairy. They enquired about the

origin, diet and handling of the buffaloes from the guide gaining an insight of how milk finally reaches our

home.

Announcing our New Units of Inquiry

K2

In the next UOI Children will learn what are living things and

their characteristics. This unit will help students explore the

important differences between the living and nonliving things

and investigate the life cycles of a butterfly, apple, frog, human

and hen.

Grade 1

Students will learn what the different forms of energy are and

how it can be transformed and used to support human progress.

They will also take a self-pledge that they will conserve energy

and will follow them as action process at home and at school.

They will also be able to create a working electrical model and

explain.

Grade 2

Significant

Grade 2 will begin their new UOI significant events to examine the history

and values of a community based on the significant events in their life. They

will make connections between event and its impact on a community.

Through field trips, role plays and guest speaker’s lectures they will collect

information to understand how cultural beliefs, interpretation bring change

to a community. Various mathematical skills like data handling, sorting,

charts will help students to present these information and come to a common

conclusion for their inquiry. Students will express their views and

perspectives on various events and its impact on our life through various

discussions, creative writing and other literary texts.

Announcing our New Units of Inquiry

Grade 3 is starting the new unit of inquiry on Arts. In this UOI students will learn to

discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values through

various art forms. The students would get engaged in role plays, puppet shows,

dances, music etc.

They will write stories and understand the diverse ways in which people express

themselves. They will also research on different artists like painters, actors,

musicians etc. It will help them to appreciate the role and contribution made by

these artists so far and how it has influenced the society.

Grade 4

Grade 5

Grade 3

Our next unit of inquiry is beliefs and values. In this unit we will learn about

the beliefs, celebrations, traditions, and symbols of major world religions.

Students will learn about Hinduism, and work in pairs to read about the

religious traditions, sacred writings, ceremonies and beliefs of Hindu people

around the world. Learning about world religions will help our students

understand their own beliefs and values, as they learn about others it will

also teach them to be open-minded and reflective. Over the course of our

unit we will be learning more about ourselves and how our beliefs and

values make us uniquely who we are.

Since the new UOI for grade V will be on how the world works, the students will be

learning and exploring about the scientific technology, circumstances that lead to

the development of important inventions and their impact and how technology

supports/impacts sustainability as well as what are the responsibilities of human

towards technology.

TRIBUTE TO PARISIANS

T he Paris attack is on everyone’s mind. The dastardly terrorist attack has sent shivers around the

world and is also universally condemned. So it was only befitting for the school to offer its tribute to the

victims and show solidarity for the country that is going through such a tough time. It was also appropriate

for us to recall the Mumbai terrorist attacks.

Students of Grades 6 and 7 went to Kanakia Paris, an upcoming project by Kanakia Spaces in BKC to offer

candles and flowers as a tribute and mark of respect. Students were sensitized on the occasion it was

heartwarming to see that most of them were aware of the tragedy. Appropriately, there was a replica of the

Eiffel tower and the Louvre where the students placed their flowers and lit candles.

The media made their presence felt and took a number of photographs.

Dr. Arundhati Hoskeri was interviewed by a TV news channel too.

SERVICE AS ACTION TAKES ONE MORE STEP AHEAD

A s part of Service as action, as a means of fundraising for OPERATION SMILE and

ALERT INDIA, we from Grade 10 organized a sale during the Western Music Concert. The MYP students had

made Chinese lanterns with the help of our art teacher, Ms. Kadambari Koli Tandel and paper baskets under the

guidance of Mr. Santaram, our library assistant. Aashna’s hand painted terracotta colorful Diwali Lamps and

décor and Tulsi plants were on display. We were enthusiastic organizing and advertising during our sale. Parents,

guests, staff members and students were very supportive during this exercise. All seemed to be impressed with

our stall and happily bought our wares thus donating for the organizations.

CHILDHOOD

Childhood is playing without care

Childhood is getting gifts and presents

Childhood is to be the centre of attention

Childhood is getting hugs and kisses

Childhood is your mom singing you a lullaby

Childhood is you sleeping on her lap

Childhood is playing hide and seek

Until you are tired and weak

Childhood is playing pranks

And laughing all the way to the bank

Childhood is sharing toys

And fighting with the boys

Childhood is like a black hole where

Everyone remembers what you did except, YOU.

Mathematics Club

M athematics has always fascinated me. On the 29th of July, we had our first MATHEMATICS Club session. I realized that many of my friends had joined the club too. Dr. Ashok taught us about the circle, and about how 22/7 (pi) is a vital component in different equations of a circle. He used equations for area and circumference of a circle in relation to pi. The first session of the club was a sure hit! On the 6th of August, my classmate Yash Ranjan explained to us about simple linear equations. He also gave us a question to solve based on this topic, which was interesting. We further learnt about simple simultaneous linear equations. Dr. Ashok Modi explained the method to solve simultaneous equations. It was a highly interactive session. On the 14th of August, I talked about the Ramanujan Square, which was very informative, and our teacher Prasant sir also got some interesting activities for us to do, which was a lot of fun. On the 24th of August, in our MATHEMATICS club activity, we learnt about different types of triangles. Dr. Ashok Modi taught us Pythagoras theorem for right angled triangle. He discussed the relation between sides and angles of right angled triangle. We also learnt new mathematical terms like cosine, sine. We got the basic idea of trigonometry and its applications in daily life. On the 1st September, in MATHEMATICS Club, Aaditya Nair and I made a presentation on Vedic MATHEMATICS. We learnt new methods of multiplication in finding the answers using Vedic MATHEMATICS. Everyone enjoyed learning something new. On the 9th of September 2015, during MATHEMATICS Club, Dr. Ashok Modi gave an idea about variation (direct and inverse variation), Yash also explained to us about an interesting type of equation of variation. Mr. Prashant Kamble further explained to us about these equations. It was very interactive and interesting.

A Day in Additional Mathematics Class

W hen you hear the word ‘Mathematics’, what is the first thing that comes to your mind?

Well, Albert Einstein was dyscalculia, which meant, that he was naturally unable to learn arithmetic

normally. But, later in life, he was assumed to be solving mathematical problems till his last breath. In Additional

Mathematics, we learn a higher level of MATHEMATICS also called “Further Mathematics”. In a normal class

day, we sit and observe the numbers, the explanations, the definitions and we solve complex problems. Our

teacher,

Mr. Prashant Kamble, explains the formulae and also gives us additional hints to work on different kinds of

problems. We also discuss answers and explanations too. We also once learnt a bit about Abstract Mathematics.

Example: here is binary operation. Using above binary operation I will

show how to find

2*1=25+2+1

2*1=32+2+1

2*1=35

Also, we sometimes do not solve only problems in class but instead we discuss history of Mathematics and life

of mathematicians. We are not supposed to write when the teacher is explaining a point. We do enjoy ourselves

greatly in additional Mathematics class.
