City Returns to Green Flag Alert after Storms SubsideParking Restrictions Lifted

The City of Sierra Madre is on Yellow Flag Alert Status. That is nice to know, but what does it mean? If you have access to a computer, pull up the city’s web site for a full ex-planation. A Christmas Story

The cats are beginning to tire of batting pine cones and playing pull down and rehang stockings. The deco-rations are beginning to collect a litttle dust. The cards are all mailed. The shopping is done and the packages are wrapped. It is time to put the feet up, sit back and lazy-out the remaining few days of my favorite season. I share these thoughts with you as it slips into history.

December marks a special timeFor it›s soon to be Christmas day!The symbols of the seasonAre spread in bright array,The gifts beneath the Christmas tree,Stockings hung in a row,The spicy smell of Christmas treats,The pine that wafts the air --There is a certain peace withinThat makes this season rare.Yes, it is Christmas in the mansion,Yule-log fires and silken frocks. And, it is Christmas in the cottage,With Mothers filling little socks. It is Christmas on the highway,In the thronging, busy mart. But the dearest truest ChristmasIs the Christmas in the heart. There is a joy at Christmas timeThat fills you with a glow.It makes you want to pass it onTo everyone you know. The music, gifts and laughterThat seem to flow so free,Make one stop and ponder,Why can›t this always be?So capture the spirit of Christmas,Don›t let it last just a day.Keep in your heart the joy and fun,Don›t let it slip away.Make every day a Christmas DayFilled with love and mirth.Keep a touch of ChristmasTucked within your heart;Keep a touch, but share a touchWith those along life›s way,That all may come to realize The truth of Christmas Day.

The Christmas story, which is thoroughly docu-mented in the Bible, is a beautiful and meaningful story that is hardly being taught to our children to-day. It is ... what celebrating Christmas is really all about. This is a wonderful story to once again share with fam-ily members and especially children during your Christ-mas celebration time.

Once upon a time, over two thousand years ago, in the town of Naza-reth, there lived a young woman named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a carpenter, whose name was Joseph. One day an angel appeared before her and told her that she had been chosen by God to have a special baby. The baby, God’s only son was to be called Jesus.

Mary was an ordinary Jewish girl, looking forward to marriage. However, when the angel Gabriel appeared to her with the incredible news that she would spiritually conceive a child, and that her son would be the Messiah, her life held great honor and would be changed forever. God knew that Mary was a woman of rare strength and obedience and that she would be a willing servant.

The Bible tells us that God chose Joseph, to be the earthly father of Jesus. Joseph was shocked when

he heard Mary’s revelation that she was pregnant with the holy baby Jesus. But God sent an angel to Joseph to verify Mary’s story and to reassure him that his mar-riage to Mary and her di-vine pregnancy, was God’s will.

Joseph responded to God in perfect obedience and displayed a godly char-acter throughout the birth and death of Jesus.

When Mary was due to have her baby, Joseph told her that they had to travel on a long journey to Beth-lehem to pay special taxes. Mary had to ride on a don-key for days over the hills of Galilee before their arrival in Bethlehem. It was crowd-ed with many other people who were required to pay their taxes also. At this time Mary was very tired and needed a place to stay. At each inn, the story was the same. There was no room for them to stay. Eventu-ally, one innkeeper told them that he had a stable that they were welcome to use. Soon after Mary gave birth to her holy son Jesus. Quickly she wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger filled with hay.

When the child was born a great star appeared over Bethlehem that could be seen for miles around. In the fields nearby shep-herds were tending their flocks. An angel appeared to them surrounded by bright light. The shepherds

were frightened and tried to run.” Fear not,” said the angel, “For I bring to you tidings of great joy. For unto you is born this day in Bethlehem - a Savior who is Christ the Lord.”

Suddenly there was a multitude of angels, Prais-ing God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, and good will toward men. The shepherds were anxious to see this baby. When they arrived at the stable, they were filled with joy at seeing Jesus lying in the manger. They knelt down and wor-shipped Him.

Far away in the East, Wise Men saw a new star shining high in the sky. These men studied the stars and they knew this was a very special star. They studied their scrolls that said that whenever a bright new star appeared it meant that a great ruler had been born. The Wise Men also set off to find this baby. The star guided them to the stable in Bethlehem. Here they knelt down and worshipped Jesus. They gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They would stay the night in a cave and the next day returned to their lands to spread the news that Je-sus Christ, The Son, and Savior Was Born. What a wondrous event.

May God Bless you and your family with His Joy and Peace throughout this Holy Christmas Holi-day Season.

Local Residents Encouraged To Prepare For Next StormWith more rain ex-

pected rain through the middle of the week and more storms on the horizon after Christmas, Pasadena residents in hillside areas are encouraged to begin preparations for potential mudslides before the show-ers begin again.

Sand and sandbags are available for Pasadena resi-dents at two locations: Fire Station #37, 3430 E. Foothill Blvd., and Fire Station # 38, 1150 Linda Vista Ave.

Here are some prepara-tion tips from the Pasadena Fire Department:

More than 100 Califor-nians have been killed by debris flows over the past 25 years. Do not sleep in low-er-floor bedrooms on the sides of homes that face po-tentially hazardous hillsides.

Before and during rains, inspect hillsides near your home for symptoms of downslope movements, including increased muddi-ness, a sudden increase in water runoff, tilting trees, and the appearance of holes, bare spots and bulges.

Listen for unusual rum-bling sounds or noises that may indicate shifting bed-

rock or breaking vegetation or structures.

Clear debris and over-growth from drainage chan-nels and rain gutters.

Keep adequate fuel in your car; power outages might shut down gas pumps.

Don’t use any food, even canned, that has come in contact with rainwater.

Stay away from storm drain channels and other bodies of water.

Keep your disaster kit updated with a flashlight, extra batteries, portable bat-tery-operated radio, first aid kit and manual, emergency

food and water for your family and pets, non-electric can opener, essential medi-cations, sturdy shoes, and comfort items for children.

Keep adequate fuel in your car; power outages might shut down gas pumps.

Visit www.cityofpasa-dena.net/disaster for more emergency preparation in-formation.

Residents who have non-emergency issues re-lated to the storm may call the Pasadena Police De-partment at (626) 744-4241; or, during regular business hours, the Pasadena Fire

Department at (626) 744-4675. In case of emergency call 9-1-1.

The Doozies

Since my last visit to Huntington Memorial Hos-pital’s Surgical Unit for vas-cular bypass surgery in my right leg, I have been push-ing myself to regain the use of that leg. I have made my way through the “walker” days and I am now onto us-ing a cane.

While the fashion op-tions on the walker are non-existent, with the exception of with or without tennis balls on the bottom, I was sur-prised at the array of designs and colors available in the cane arena. The choice was tough, but I opted for a black and fatigue camouflage mod-el. My hope was that it would be invisible or at least not as noticeable. I don’t exactly know what I was thinking, but I really need to talk to my surgeon about the meds he’s prescribing me. I think they are causing me to be a tad delusional.

In the last week or so, I have progressed to the point of being able to hobble around the house on my own. At this rate, I think I should be able to walk “nor-mally” by next week, just in time to have my left leg done

and then I will be back to square one again. Yeah, I am so digging 2010. I wish it would just go on forever.

When I venture out in public and have to walk any distance, like going to Sam’s Club for example, my little aluminum and rub-ber friend goes with me. It slows me down and is a pain in the ass for me to use, but the alternative, lying around doing nothing, is worse.

My wife Stacey and I have ventured out a couple

of times over the last couple of weeks and during one of our last trips she came up with the following epiphany, “People seem to treat you better when you are using a cane.”

I hadn’t noticed. To be honest, at that point my focus was on just maneuvering, but she had planted the seed. On subsequent jaunts I started paying more attention and began to think that her assess-ment was right.

I personally have always been one of those people who relinquish the right of way and hold open the door for others, regardless of the hardware they may or may not be sporting. I have never been the type that felt com-pelled to push and rush my way around people when out and about. My train of thought has always been that my time is not any more valuable than the next guy. Sadly, this sentiment is not universally shared.

As a matter of fact, as the holidays have drawn clos-er, the shiny star at the top of the tree of courtesy towards the “poor guy” with the cane

has tarnished. The need to get those presents as fast as possible took precedence over manners and my cam-ouflaged cane achieved my delusional fantasy of being invisible.

My vision of my fellow man, during what is sup-posed to be “the season of caring and good will towards man”, has blurred. My ir-ritation has me imagining different scenarios of how to use my cane as a weapon. I want to punish the rude and obnoxious evil elves that are sucking out all of my holiday cheer. I even started compos-ing a letter to Santa asking him for a new cane that had a sword or a dagger attached to the handle and concealed inside the body.

Then it struck me. Why should I sink to their level? I would not allow any group of people, especially the rude, to deprive me of my favorite time of year. My holiday spir-it was too hard to reach this year to have it extinguished by people I wouldn’t give a broken ornament to.

Without knowing it, these holiday hooligans have given me a gift. They have in-advertently strengthened my resolve to make this holiday the best one yet. They did this despite the fact that all in-dications point to me waking up on Christmas morning in a hospital room instead of my own bed for the first time, and hopefully the last time, in my life.

If you haven’t already, I hope you too can find the joy of the season even if you have to do it one step at a time. Happy Holidays to all!

Dam the water, but let the truth flow. On Dec. 16th a public meeting was held at the Highland Oaks School in Arcadia to discuss the County Flood Control’s plan to desilt the Big Santa Anita Dam located in Monrovia. Over one hundred educated, passionate, and concerned citizens filled the auditorium. The meeting was very orderly and their wishes were very clear.

“Preserve this rare Oak Woodland ecosystem.” Dam sediment will always be an on-going problem. Don’t destroy an endangered, timeless heritage, to buy a few years. An independent engineering study has shown the Flood Control has enough room for their current needs and with some easements from Monrovia, their needs could be met for several decades. It is truly a sad day when a public agency ignores the facts and seeks to destroy a public treasure.

On Thursday, De-cember 16, 2010, Detec-tives from the Arcadia Police Department were joined by personnel from State Parole, the Alhambra, Monterey Park, and San Gabriel Police Departments, for the purpose of conduct-ing parole / probation compliance checks at 22 locations: Arcadia (7), Rosemead (7), San Ga-briel (3), Temple City (1), and Alhambra (4). These checks targeted 23 subjects who are on ac-tive parole or probation, or who had outstanding arrest warrants. The ma-

jority of these subjects are either Asian gang associates or sex regis-trants.

Results of the com-pliance checks resulted in:

1 arrest for violation of parole

1 arrest for a felony warrant and probation hold

2 arrests for misde-meanor warrants

Documentation for 1 violation of parole and 2 probation violations

18 of the 23 subjects were contacted during the compliance checks

Detectives from each of the law enforcement agencies involved came together after several in-cidents involving Asian gang members that oc-curred in Arcadia and Alhambra in late Novem-ber. Arrests were made in those cases. Local investigators will contin-ue to work together and this event is an excellent example of information sharing and the ongoing collective effort to com-bat gang activity in our communities.

for every contingency plan, even miracles. Yes miracles like Thanksgiv-ing when it looked like they weren’t going to get enough turkeys for their clients. At the eleventh hour, a miracle occured and they (Foothill Unity) had more than enough.

Executive director Joan Whitenack said it

was truly a joy to see so many people helped again this year thanks, in no small part, to tre-mendous donations from banks like Wells Fargo who donated $10,000 Monday morning with an oversized check. “We were thrilled,” said Whit-enack, who manages to pull off two of the area’s

largest food giveaways on Thanksgiving and Christ-mas every year with the precision of a Swiss Swiss watch.

Coordinating the events is no small opera-tion and requires plan-ning as well as man(and woman) power that the volunteers and staff pro-vide each year.

flags will be flown. They are : City Hall, Search and Rescue, Mountain Trail and Churchill Road, and Mary’s Market.

The flag system is based on Ready, Set, Go. A green flag means that here is major chance of rain and that resi-dents need to be READY for “potential evacuation.” When mud flows are pre-dicted in small isolated ar-eas, the Yellow Flag (the one now is effect) is flown to alert residents in the affected areas to be SET to evacu-ate and that those residents might consider leaving vol-untarily in an orderly man-ner. The red flag signals the residents in designated area must GO.

During the Yellow and Red Flag Alerts, residents should move their vehicles off the streets. According to SIerra Mafdre Public

Information Officer, Eli-sha Weaver, this is to allow emergency vehicles access to the affected areas. She also said the movement of the vehicles was to protect the cars themselves from damage.

According to the city the areas affected by the tow policy are “Mount Wilson Trail, Churchill Rd., Sky-land Dr., Fern Glen, Fern Dr., Idlehour Ln., Canyon Crest Dr., Orange Dr., Woodland Dr., Brookside Lane, Sunnyside Lane, Yuc-ca Trail, and Holly Trail.”

According to the city’s official website “The Red Flag “GO” will trigger In-formation Check-in Centers to be opened at both Sierra Madre Public School Cam-puses. (160 N. Canon Ave. & 141 W. Highland Ave.) If you evacuate, please no-tify the Check-In Center so

that we know you are safely out and have contact infor-mation to ensure you have timely notice of when it is safe to go back into your home. Additional informa-tion on Evacuation Shelters and pet lodging will be available at these locations. When evacuating, please plan to be as self-sufficient as possible with important pa-perwork, medications, and clothing for at least seven days.

“Please note that Public Safety Officials do not take evacuation orders lightly and residents should heed these orders. Once mud be-gins to flow, Emergency Re-sponders will NOT rescue those who failed to evacuate until the mud has stopped flowing and it is safe for re-sponders to enter the mud flow areas.”

order to meet sediment placement needs while minimizing impacts.”

Monrovia resident Glen Owens was impressed by the meeting Thursday. “I’ve never been to a pub-lic meeting in my 25 years as a Planning Commissioner where so many people were so passionate and knowledg-able on the issue, “ he said.

The irony of the meet-ing’s location wasn’t lost on one opponent to the project who pointed out that they were at Highland Oaks School trying to save oak trees.

The Los Angeles Coun-ty Board of Supervisors issued a moratorium last week that will delay the proj-ect a minimum of 30 days.

The Santa Anita Sedi-ment Removal Project would use a conveyor belt to move 500,000 cubic yards of debris from the dam to sediment sites located within the city of Arcadia on land owned by the county.

The project area is di-vided into three sediment sites: upper, middle and lower. The upper and lower sediment sites are both al-

ready active, while the 23-acre middle has been left to grow. According to Glen Owen there are 179 live oak trees spread out over 11 of those 23 acres. There are also sycamores on those 11 acres.

These 11-acres are “needed to make room for the sediment,” according to the county and subsequently the trees would be removed.

As part of the project’s mitigation, the plan calls for 250,000 cubic yards of mate-rial to be placed on the low-er sediment site, allowing it to reach capacity. Once at capacity, the county will “re-vegetate the approximately eight acres that make up the lower sediment site. “

The county says that oaks and sycamores would be planted, and residents will have an opportunity to decide what the land is used for. Owens pointed out that the trail on the east side of the Santa Anita Wash is locked – but should not be. That trail is an access to Live Oak.

As mentioned previous-ly, one of the key opponents

to the County plan is Glen Owens, of Big Santa Anita Historical Society, who re-ceived thunderous applause when he said he hired an independent surveyor to see what the alternatives could be to removing trees:

The following is the let-ter he received as a result of the findings he personally paid for, dated December 16. Owens hired Stryker Civil Engineering:

“Subject: Santa Anita Sedi-ment Placement Sites – Arcadia, CA

In accordance with your request we have evaluated the remaining capacity of the upper sediment placement site, the north-erly limits of which is located approximately 700 feet south of the north spillway into the Santa Anita Flood Control Channel and extends to its southerly limits ap-proximately an additional 1350 feet. This upper site consists of an upper area approximately 1050 feet long and a lower area approx-imately 300 feet long. The total capacity of the upper site raised to elevation 775 is approximately 250,000 CY. The designed re-maining capacity of the lower sediment placement site, located

at the overall site’s southerly ter-minus is approximately 270,000 CY. The combined capacity of these two sites is approximately 520,000 CY all contained within the Flood Control property of the City of Arcadia. We un-derstand that the District desires to have approximately 500,000 CY available capacities for future disposal. By using the upper site described above, adequate capac-ity is available without having to disturb the 8 Acre Oak Tree grove lying between the upper and lower sediment placement sites. If more capacity is desired there is at least another 500,000 CY available in the upper site if al-lowed to spread into the adjacent City of Monrovia property. We would recommend agreements be made between the District and the Cities of Monrovia and Ar-cadia to allow this future expan-sion, thereby negating the need to fill over the existing 8 Acre Oak Grove described above. In addi-tion we recommend planting the slopes with vegetation and trees as the fill proceeds. We utilized ex-isting Los Angeles Department of Public Works Plans, Santa Anita Sediment Placement Site showing existing contours dated July 11, 2007 for this evaluation.

Respectfully submitted,G. Bart StrykerStryker EngineeringCivil Engineering and Plan-

ningImpassioned, educated

speeches trying to get the message across that the trees have to stay were indeed the highlight of the evening. “Our kids are suffering for Nature Deficit Disorder” one speaker said. “We will never be able to replace the trees once cut down.”

Also attending Thurs-day’s meeting was Lara Laramendi, nee’ Blakely, former Mayor of Monrovia. Laramendi said there has to be an alternative to cut-ting down 100-year-old oak trees to place sediment the

County has not yet consid-ered. Lara Laramendi was one of the key players in get-ting Monrovia’s Wilderness preserve a few years ago.

It seemed obvious even to the casual observer that the County of Lops Ange-les needs to re-visit the plan and consult the neighboring communities and citizens for their input. The Flood Control Department of the county needs to communi-cate with local cities, accord-ing to Owens.

One lone voice in the audience did seem to agree, however, with the county plan to remove the trees.

But the majority of the participants at the meeting were obviously, “reasonable conservationists,” as Glen Owens calls his friends who hold the land dear to their hearts.

The majority of the au-dience made it crystal clear they were not happy with county plans and that they need to consider alterna-tives and that it’s obvious the trees do not need to be removed

Arcadia city officials including Councilman Bob Harbicht and city manager Don Penman attended Thursday’s meeting.

The DPW has present-

ed several alternatives in the project’s Environmental Impact Report (EIR), all of which were determined to be unfeasible.

The next step: Well, ac-cording to Mr. Glen Owens, the County “marches to a different Drum…” and “legal action may be necessary” to stop the county from taking such drastic action. He as-serted that he and many oth-ers in Arcadia, Monrovia, Sierra Madre and Pasadena are committed to this fight and feel the EIR was decep-tive. The meeting on Thurs-day evening was proof that there are concerned citizens who care about the future of the land. “We’ve got to leave the world a better place. The City and Coun-ty Flood Control needs to work together to create a ‘Conservation Easement ‘,“ stated Owens. This would put a stop to county plans to destroy the trees. According to Owens, the selfsame land was once owned by the City of Arcadia but was land-swapped with the county for the Par 3 Golf Course some years ago.

Santa Anita Park, which has been idle as a live rac-ing venue since April 18, will open for its 74th win-ter/spring meeting on Sun-day, with a special first post time of 12 noon. A 10-race card is planned, with two Grade I events,

the $250,000 Malibu Stakes and the $250,000 La Brea Stakes leading the way. The Grade II, $150,000 Sir Beau-fort Stakes and the $100,000 California Breeders’ Cham-pion Stakes will serve as supporting features on what figures to be a day of great racing and entertainment.

Santa Anita, which first opened on Dec. 25, 1934, is an iconic figure on the Southern California sports

landscape and opening day is not only steeped in tradi-tion, but it has become one of the most highly anticipat-ed dates on the sports calen-dar.

In addition to great racing action, fans will be treated on Sunday to a team

of aerial skydivers, who will parachute into the storied Great Race Place between races. In addition to the sky-divers, fans of all ages will have an up-close and per-sonal chance to watch and enjoy the Budweiser Clydes-dales, as they perform in front of the grandstand throughout the day.

Although opening day is always a highly anticipat-ed event, this year the an-

ticipation is perhaps greater than in many years--due to the fact that Santa Anita has been “dark” for a longer pe-riod than at any time since 1968, and on account of the fact Santa Anita has re-turned to an all-natural dirt main track.

“All of our advance sales are way up,” said Santa Anita President George Haines. “We’ve been idle for a long time and people are very anxious to come back to Santa Anita and we’re anxious to have them back. Additionally, many of our best customers are look-ing forward to racing on a dirt surface again, as are our horsemen.

“The weather forecast, starting on Thursday, is very favorable and we’re look-ing forward to good weather on Sunday. It should be an historic and very excit-ing day and we’re looking forward to welcoming every-one back.”

Entries for Sunday’s card will be taken on Wednesday. For reserva-tions and more information on opening day, fans are en-couraged to visit www.san-taanita.com, or to call (626) 574-RACE.

Santa Anita Set For Opener On December 26, 2010First Post At 12 O'Clock Noon, Prestigious Malibu Heads Four Stakes

All fans attending Santa Anita’s opening day, Dec. 26, will receive a beautiful 2011 wall calen-dar, entitled “Santa Anita on the Silver Screen,” free with paid admission.

Santa Anita has been a prime location for movie shoots dating back to its opening in 1934, and this beautiful, full-color cal-endar chronicles 12 mov-ies that have been shot at “The Great Race Place.”

“Our opening day wall calendars are one of our most popular items,” said Candice Chew, Santa Anita’s Director of Print and Graphics. “Opening day and our traditional calendars are synonymous and we are very excited about the theme and look of this year’s edition. From the 1930’s, to the present day, Santa Anita remains a very popular shooting destination for the movie industry—and I think that’s a tribute to the fact that Santa Anita offers

a distinct look and repre-sents a timeless beauty that producers and directors have been and will con-tinue to be attracted to.”

Perhaps the most successful early movie that was shot at Santa Anita was “A Day at the Races,” which was filmed in 1937 and featured the Marx Brothers. Maureen O’Sullivan, famous from her work in earlier Tarzan movies, played the hero-ine whose farm must be saved by the zany three-some of Groucho, Harpo and Chico.

Very few actors were stronger at the box-office in the 1950s than Bob Hope, who came to Santa Anita to star in 1951’s “Lemon Drop Kid.” In one memo-rable scene, Hope, in the role of con man, visits San-ta Anita’s Jockeys’ Room “hot box.” He then talks a gangster’s girlfriend out of betting on a winner and cooks up a scam to come up with the money.

“ S e a b i s c u i t , ” based on Laura Hillen-brand’s book and re-lease in 2003, generated more box-office revenue than any other film shot at Santa Anita. The cast included Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges, Chris Coo-per, Gary Stevens and it included dramatic racing footage.

Another film de-picted in Santa Anita’s 2011 wall calendar is 2009’s “Public Enemies,” which starred Johnny Depp. In the movie, Santa Anita was substituted for South Florida’s Hialeah Park, and Depp played the role John Dillinger, an in-famous bank robber who didn’t hide from authori-ties as he as he spent an afternoon at the races.

First post time on opening day is 12 noon. For more information on opening day and upcom-ing racing action, go to www.santaanita.com.

High School Varsity Footballs CIF Mid Valley Champions - Monrovia Wildcats To Get Parade

Monrovia Plans Big Wildcat Celebration in New Year

Nick Bueno gets tackled but not stopped during the CIF Mid Valley Championship last week - Photos by Terry Miller

Remember Folks – You heard it here first. Our good friend Ralph Walker, who attended the game and has been an incurable Wildcat fan for years, was one of the first to call for a parade to cel-ebrate the Monrovia High School Varsity Football’s CIF Mid Valley Victory last Saturday.

The Monrovia City Council has planned a victory celebration for the Monrovia High School Wildcats who are the CIF Champions this year. The

celebration will be held on Thursday, January 6 in Library Park. Start-ing at 6:30 p.m., the team will ride on a Monrovia Fire Truck and the Pub-lic Works Department’s Santa Sleigh from the High School to the park, escorted by the Monrovia Police Department.

They will travel east on Colorado Blvd. from the High School and then north on Myrtle Ave. to the park. The community will be able to cheer our favorite football team all

along the parade route. When the team reaches the park, the Monrovia High School Band and Cheerleaders will be there to greet them. The cham-pions will then be recog-nized and congratulated by Monrovia City Coun-cil and Monrovia Unified School District Board Members.

The City Council and the Board of Education want the entire communi-ty to join them in this long desired celebration. GO WILDCATS!

Protests of every shape and form took ceter stage, from Health Care reforn, to gay rights and the grow-ing oppositiuon to Medical Marijuana dispensaries.

Foothill Unity Center had record need for help this year and still managed to feed thousands and get kids ready for school.

The Gold Line looks like it will finally be com-ing to Monrovia and Arca-dia after years of technical glitches.

Yoko Ono helped cel-ebrate what would have been John Lennon’s 70 th Birthday with music giant Quincey Jones.

Additionally, Santa Anita Race track final-ly returned to natural dirt track after years of complains about the synthetic track,

The Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority (Construction Authority) announced the launch of its new website - www.foothillextension.org.

The new site is intended to capture the aesthetic essence of the San Gabriel Valley in its design; while providing ease in navigation, robust information sharing, dynamic community calendar features, upgraded media content and more.

“Our new site was designed to be a one-stop shop of information about the pro-gram of projects underway at the Construction Authority,” stated Habib F. Balian, CEO of the Construction Authority. “Community members, elected officials and others will now be able to easily access the latest construction notices, meeting announce-ments, and more for Phases 2A (Pasadena to Azusa), 2B (Glendora to Montclair) and Phase 2C (Ontario Airport Extension).”

The new website has been designed to provide the latest tools to facilitate informa-tion sharing in a quick and easy to use format. These include all-new pages for each construction phase of the project, a “Media Resources” page with project fact sheets, lo-gos, maps and press releases; a redesigned “Headlines” page with relevant news stories and coverage; and an all new “Videos” page which contains multiple videos created by and relevant to the project. Each corridor city (from Los Angeles to Ontario) continues to have a page on the site, which includes important links to community specific infor-mation, and contact information is now available for all Construction Authority staff.

The site was designed by local marketing and design firm Pasadena Advertising, located in Pasadena, California. More information about the project, Construction Au-thority and current procurements can be found on the Construction Authority’s web-site – www.foothillextension.org.

The Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Con-struction Authority Board of Directors announced it elected Glendora Mayor Pro Tem Doug Tessitor as its new chairman, Clare-mont Mayor Pro Tem Sam Pedroza as its first vice chair-man, and Los Angeles City Councilmember Ed Reyes as its second vice chairman.

Tessitor has been a member of the Glendora City Council since 2003, having served as Mayor in 2006-7 and Mayor Pro Tem in 2005-6. He has served as the Pasadena City appoin-tee to the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Con-struction Authority Board since January 2009, and has served on the Author-ity’s Joint Powers Author-ity board since November 2008. Tessitor currently also serves on the Southern Cali-fornia Association of Gov-ernments (SCAG) Regional Council, Foothill Transit Executive Board, and LA Works and San Gabriel Val-ley Council of Governments (SGVCOG) boards.

“This is a very exciting time for the project and the Construction Authority, and I am honored to lead the board as we begin construc-tion on the nearly $700 mil-lion project that will connect communities from Arcadia

to Azusa to the entire LA County system, create thou-sands of jobs and generate nearly a billion dollars for our region,” said Tessitor. “This project has been a top priority for me since I took office in 2003, and I will con-tinue my efforts on its behalf until the line reaches Glen-dora and then LA/Ontario International Airport.”

The board election took place at its December 15 board meeting. Tessi-tor succeeds Azusa City Councilman Keith Hanks, who served as chairman since 2009. During his ten-ure, Phase 2A (Pasadena to Azusa) received full funding after years of planning and a Master Cooperative Agree-ment between the Construc-tion Authority and Metro was approved by both agen-cies establishing the working relationship for Phases 2A and 2B of the project.

Claremont Mayor Pro Tem Sam Pedroza was elected first vice chair at last night’s meeting. Pedroza was appointed to the Con-struction Authority board in May 2009 by the SGVCOG. He has served on the Cla-remont City Council since 2005 and is an Environmen-tal Planner with the Sanita-tion Districts of Los Ange-les County. He serves as the City’s appointee to the

SGVCOG where he chairs the Solid Waste Working Group, SCAG’s Regional Council, and the Six Basins Water Master board.

Councilman Ed Reyes will continue to serve as the Construction Author-ity’s second vice chair-man. Reyes has served on the Construction Authority board since July 2001, and has served as chair and vice chair on multiple occasions during his tenure. Reyes is in his last term on the Los Angeles City Council (due to term limits), having served since April 2001, and served on the board dur-ing construction of Phase 1 (Union Station to Pasadena).

The Construction Au-thority broke ground in June 2010 on the $700 mil-lion Phase 2A project, fund-ed by Measure R sales tax funds. The first $18.5 million design-build contract was awarded in June to Skanska USA for design and con-struction of the nearly 600 linear foot rail bridge to be built over the I-210 Freeway in Arcadia. Proposals are due in January for the ap-proximately $450 million contract to finalize design and construct the 11.5-miles of track, stations, crossings, a 25-acre maintenance facility and more.

Animal control offi-cials rescued 250 cats from a 600 square ft. storage fa-cility Wednesday evening in Pasadena and the own-ers home in Temple City.

Additionally, animal control officers found 34

dead cats in a freezer. Two dozen Pasadena

Humane Society employ-ees rotated in and out of the locations Wednesday night, collecting and trans-porting the felines.

Beacon Media met with Ricky Whitman of the

Pasadena Humane Society Friday morning, which al-ready was filled to capac-ity before officials served a search warrant Wednes-day at a former residence-turned-storage unit in the 000 block of North Altade-na Drive.

There are cages and ‘porta pet’ crates every-where in the Pasadena facility now home to these new residents. The smell, albeit better that Thurday morning, was still quite pungent with the sheer volume of cag-es and cats. A massive task for the staff and vol-unteers at the Humane Society let alone for the veterinarians who will examine each one of the 250 cats and check for in-

fectious diseases“We’ve never seen

anything like this,” said an employee who was help-ing clean out the cages of caked faeces.

“They seem to be in reasonably good shape, some with upper respira-tory issues.” Whitman said.

The cats owner, Tan-ya Regan, 62, of Temple City, could face charges of animal cruelty and neglect depending on what the Los Angeles County District Attorney decides. Regan was served with multiple warrants to search her two locations .

Nine cats and two dogs were taken from Regan’s home on Olive Street in Temple city.

Regan was “very up-

set” about the situation and initially refused to let the officers take the cats. How-ever the warrants and the sheer presence of officers convinced the Temple City woman to give up the 250 cats into protective custody

Glenn and Amy Put-nam have been named Sierra Madre’s 2010 Citizens of the Year by the Sierra Madre Cham-ber of Commerce. This marks the second year in a row that a couple has been named the town’s Citizen(s) of the Year, with Louise and the late Dr. Paul Neiby having re-ceived the honor in 2009.

Glenn Putnam has been a member and Board member of the SM Historical Preservation Society for more than five years, and is currently the marketing director for the organization. For more than ten years, he has been a vine docent at the Wistaria Festival, and is the bus coordinator at the Wistaria Festival. He was named a Library Trustee in 2010. He is past presi-dent of the Sierra Madre Garden Club, served as a Committee Member on the Friends of the Library Wine Tasting, and has been active with Creative Arts Group. In addi-tion to all of these Sierra Madre volunteer efforts, he also has been a mem-ber of the Tournament of Roses Foundation for more than ten years.

His wife Amy is also active with the Sierra Madre Historical Pres-ervation Society. She

has been a member and Board member for more than five years, and is cur-rently serving as treasur-er, and according to her nomination, is working hard to upgrade the finan-cial records for the Soci-ety “into the computer age.” She was in charge of the Society’s booths at the Wistaria Festival, the Art Fair, and the Fourth of July festivities in 2010. She was appointed to the Senior Community Com-mission in 2010, and has also served as a Wistaria Vine docent for more than 10 years. She was president of the Civic Club in 2009/2010. She is also active with the L.A. County Arboretum, and has in the past served as a docent on the Garden Tour for Creative Arts and filled a variety of leadership roles with the Friends of the Library, as president and as Chair-person for its annual Wine Tasting. She has also volunteered at the Chamber, and in 2005

even won the Chamber’s Chili Cook-off.

Friends of the Put-nams who were viewing a movie at the home of Jay Whitcraft broke into applause when the an-nouncement was made. Said Amy “I do…feel…awful because there are so many more qualified and dedicated and com-petent volunteers than we are. It’s rather embarrass-ing because we just do what we do…”

The Putnams will be honored at a dinner to be held in the Chandelier Room at Santa Anita Park on Saturday, Jan. 22nd at 6:30pm. Tickets are $60, $55 for seniors, and can be purchased at the Chamber, 20 W. Mon-tecito Ave, Ste. C in Si-erra Madre, or by phone (with credit card) at (626) 355-5111. The Mercy Powell Jazz Trio will per-form during cocktail hour and dinner. For more info, visit www.SMCitize-noftheYear.info.

Giving where there is a need is high on the agenda of Sierra Madre Civic Club during these busy months. Members are brightening the holidays for six local needy families by provid-ing them with gift baskets. Also big are their giving hearts for Foothill Unity, which helps neighbors in crisis with food, clothing, motel vouchers, etc. Due to the depressed economy, they are experiencing a shortage in their efforts to provide for the holidays. Club members made do-nations both in November and December.

Third on club mem-bers’ list is the Women’s Room in Pasadena. Direc-tor Jackie Knowles has pro-vided a list of suggestions for daily simple needs. Club members provided a shower of gifts for these needs.

Also in the holiday spirit, the club’s Beauti-fication Committee will add festive decorations to the City Hall rotunda. For several years, the care and planing of the rotunda has been an ongoing club proj-ect.

At their December meeting, the club looks

forward to welcoming the 2011 Sierra Madre Rose Princesses as guests.

Along with Civic Club’s busy and caring time, they always look for-ward to having fun. Their “Ho, Ho, HO” Christmas parts begins at 6:30 p.m. On Friday, December 10, at the home of John and Linda Knowles with light fare. At 8:30 p.m., the par-ty continues at the home of Kevin and Colleen McKer-nan Drolet for dessert and Christmas music, much of it provided by a choir of club members.

Rubin com-mented, “I don’t think I’m making history. I’m just looking forward to working with Showcase on many of the great events established by the organization.”

Marti Farley, presi-dent of Pasadena Show-

case House for the Arts observed, “PSHA is for-tunate to have such a tal-ented group join our orga-nization. They bring unique individual tal-ents to enrich the mission of PSHA.”

K a y t i e Watkins, Pro-visional Mem-ber chairman, commented, “The Provi-sional Mem-bers are a diverse group with a myr-iad of back-grounds, in-cluding long histories of c ommun i t y service. The majority has a deep con-nection that successfully supports and funds music

programs in the commu-nity.”

New Provisional Mem-bers, including Chuck Ru-

from South Pasadena, Debra Qurtman and Patri-cia Hooper from Altadena, Linda Polwrek and Andrea
