The insignia of the U.S. Army, Pacific was originally designed and approved for U.S. Army forces Pacific Ocean Areas on February 23, 1945. Scholarships for Military Children — Applications are being accepted for the 2010 Scholarships for Military Children Program. Eligible applicants should prepare to

submit an essay on the following topic: “You can travel back in time; however, you cannot change events. What point in history would you visit and why?”

Applications must be turned in to a commissary by close of business Feb. 17. At least one scholarship will be awarded at every store location with qualified applicants. To apply, visit www.commissaries.com or diwww.militaryscholar.org for an application.

AER Scholarships — Army Emergency Relief (AER) Scholarship opportunities for the 2010—11 academic year are now available.

Army Families with undergraduate college expenses for their dependent children may be eligible to apply for the Maj. Gen. James Ursano Scholarship Program. The Scholarship Program offers scholarships based on financial need, academics, and

leadership/achievement for each academic year. The Stateside Spouse Education Assistance Program (SSEAP) is a need-based

education assistance program designed to assist spouses/widows(ers) in gaining the education required to allow them to qualify for increased occupational opportunities.

Christmas Tree Recycling

Place trees at the curb for pickup on your regular twice-monthly green waste collection day. Cut the tree into lengths of up to 3 feet.

Take trees to the city's Refuse and Recycling Convenience Centers at Geiger Road in 'Ewa; 56-020 Kamehameha Highway in La'ie; 71-129 Wilikina Drive in Wahiawa; off Plantation Road in Wai'anae; Hihimanu Street in Waimanalo; Waipahu Depot Road in Waipahu; and Kawailoa Road in Hale'iwa. The centers are open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. They will be closed New Year's Day.

Drop off trees at Hawaiian Earth Products' composting sites at Campbell Industrial Park (7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday; 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday) or Kapa'a Quarry Road (open daily from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).

PRESIDENTS’ DAY

FEBRUARY 15, 2010 Military Participation

BACKGROUND

The Great Aloha Run, which began in 1985, is an annual community event held on Presidents' Day to raise money for local charities. Over the past 25 years Great Aloha Run has raised over $8 million and in 2009 alone gave away over $370,000 to Hawaii based charities. Carole Kai, a local entertainer and TV producer, is the race promoter. The Run has been recognized nationally as one of the top “100 Great Road Races” to participate in by Runners’ World Magazine.

DIVISIONS There are divisions for elites, age groups, wheelchair and handcycle competitors, military personnel running as individuals, and Sounds of Freedom (military running in formation). COURSE DESCRIPTION The 8.15 mile, relatively flat course, starts at Aloha Tower in Downtown Honolulu, winds its way along the historic Honolulu Harbor, down Nimitz Highway, Kamehameha Highway and into the Aloha Stadium. The finish line is the back goal line of the north end zone on the stadium floor.

Individual Military Entries – Use the military entry form to participate in the run and line up with the rest of the public on race day. The difference is a discount to members of the Military community and $1 returned to the respective branch of services Morale Welfare and Recreation department. Also, there are awards for the top three military male and female runners ($1000, $500 and $250).

Sounds of Freedom – The Sounds of Freedom division is composed of units running in formation. Active duty service Men and Women from all branches of service participate. This division is not timed but max participation is rewarded. Additionally, emphasis is placed on uniformity and esprit de corps. HOW TO REGISTER

Art and Essay Contest — The Armed Services YMCA’s annual art and essay contest invites military chil-

dren to create artwork and essays on this year’s themes, ―My Military Hero‖ and ―My Military Family.‖ En-

tries for the art contest must be postmarked no later than Feb. 19, 2010, and are for children in grades K–6.

Students in grades 1-12 are asked to write their essay about ―My Military Hero‖ and postmark entries no

later than March 19, 2010.

Winning entrees will be displayed in a number of locations in the Washington D.C. area, and winners will
