Gardening Corner - Tree planting

The autumn and winter months are a great time toplant trees in the garden. Trees that are bought in acontainer can be planted all year round but will requireconstant watering until they are established -especially in dry conditions. Root ball - literally dug outof a nursery - are only sold in autumn/winter and needto be planted straight away before the roots dry out.Even if you have a small garden a tree can add height, structure and seasonal interest. They can provideshelter and food for wildlife. Some trees stay quitesmall making them ideal for a pot so even if you onlyhave a patio or a balcony there are still options.Suggested smaller trees:Some of the smaller Rowans (Latin name-Sorbus) aregreat all-rounders and provide spring flowers, autumnberries and autumn leaf colour. I like Sorbuscashmiriana which has pink flowers followed by whiteberries, that look like marbles. Over time this mayreach 4m high and 3m wide. Or Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’with its white flowers in May/June and later yellowberries that look great against the bright red autumnalleaves.Prunus ‘Mume Beni-Chidori’ is a small flowering cherryand has almond scented flowers on bare branches inFebruary/March, brightening up some of those dulldays with some early colour. This tree will get to about2.5m high and reach a spread of 2.5m. It grows in alollipop style and is suitable for pots, patios andbalconies.Lots of varieties of Acer are also good in pots andsmall spaces. Acer palmatum has great leaf shapeand purple leaves that turn crimson in the autumn. It’sheight and width can reach up to 4m. If you like purpleleaves try Cercis canadensis ’Forest Pansy’. It hasplum coloured leaves that turn a beautiful orangey redin autumn and has unusual little pink flowers in thespring. Although it can grow up to 5m high and 4mwide, it can also withstand a pretty severe prune (Ihave coppiced them in the past)   so it can bemanaged.

For good flowering trees try Cornuskousa. Its ‘flowers’are actually bracts. They are white and flower in Mayand June turning pink as the flowers mature. It alsohas good autumn colour and pink fruits. It can reach aheight and width of 3m.Another good all-rounder is Amelanchier grandiflora.White spring flowers, late summer berries and goodautumn leaf colour. It reaches a height and spread of4m.For evergreen trees try the strawberry tree Arbutusunedo. Unfortunately, the fruits only look likestrawberries and are quite unpalatable. It reaches aheight and spread of 4mx4m.Cryptomeria japonica is worth a look. It doesn’t havethe usual 1960’s look of a conifer. It is much softerand looser. Its foliage is blue/green until the autumnwhen it turns burgundy. Will reach 3m high and 1mwide.How to plant your tree:Dig a hole and loosen thesoil as you go to get rid ofcompaction and improvedrainage. The hole shouldbe deep enough to housethe roots but wider than theroot plate. Tease out theroots of the tree first to see how wide you need yourhole. Then go much wider to loosen the soil andmake it easier for the roots to push through. If your tree is small it may not require a stake but if itdoes put the stake in first. The stake should be twothirds of the size of the tree so that the tree can swayand develop strong roots. Place the stake against theprevailing wind to add more support.Place the tree in the hole and back fill with soil andorganic matter. As you fill the hole, wiggle the tree sothat the soil can settle between the roots. Firm thesoil down. If using a stake, tie the tree to stake. If youhave rabbits you may wish to add a spiral tree guardto stop them nibbling the base. Give the tree a reallygood water to settle the roots. Keep the groundaround the tree weed free so that the tree roots aren’tcompeting for water and nutrients.

Advent Concert with New Musical Director

Taunton Choral Society's first concert with Edward Goater, their new musical director, takes placeon Saturday 26th November, 7.30 pm at St John the Evangelist, Park Street, Taunton TA1 4DG.Lit solely by a multitude of candles and with mulled wine and mince pies to follow, the AdventConcert offers a lovely relaxing start to the Christmas period. The significance of candlelight ismore complex than just theatricals. For the ancient Church, Advent actually looked primarilytowards the Second Coming and the end of time and not the coming birth in Bethlehem, as now. This broader contexthelps us understand the background to pieces included like The Advent Prose and Adam Lay y'Bounden. BobChilcott's On Christmas Night forms the meat of the programme, entwining many familiar tunes you may recognise. The concert is in no way a religious affair, but seeks to draw from the deep well of beauty and culture that surroundsthe season. St John's has fine acoustics and the best organ in Taunton, so make sure you’re able to share with usthis wonderful experience on 26th November.Following this, on Saturday 17th December, Taunton Sinfonietta joins TCS to perform Handel's Messiah, at St MaryMagdalene, Church Square, Taunton. TCS has brought together soloists from all over the country for this ever-popularmasterpiece. Very few pieces in the repertoire attract the kind of affection and power from both performers andconcert-goers as Messiah, so book early for a good seat!Tickets for the Advent Concert are £8, £5 students (free for under 12’s) and are available atwww.tauntonchoralsociety.org.uk, or from Taunton Information Centre at the Market Place. For further info, contact Caroline Brown 01823 413895 or email [email protected]

Messy Church

As we enter the new Academic School Year, MessyChurch is up and running and eager to welcome you.But what is Messy Church I hear you ask?Messy Church is about people coming together asthey are, whether tidy or messy and with their messyor tidy families, just coming to God as they are andseeing what a Christian community is all about.Everything we do, all the activities we prepare, theenvironment we create is for children and for adults, for old and for young. Re-creation and recreation areboth important as we meet God in the safe space ofplay. We try to create a space where people cancome in and be part of a church, with a difference! We provide food so that people can gather aroundtables and enjoy being together.Messy church is church, and it works best when it isseen as another congregation of the church. Throughit we are giving other churches a new lease of life.We are creating spaces for God’s Holy Spirit to workin us, so it’s not just about learning about God, it’sgiving the opportunity to meet him.Messy Church is a church, not a craft club, that helpspeople encounter Jesus as Lord and Saviour. It hasthree elements:CreativityWe use hands-on activities to explore Bible stories, and to reflect a God of creativity and to give people achance to play together.CelebrationIt reflects a God of joy who wants his people to havelife in all its fullness.HospitalityThis reflects a God of unconditional love and is achurch for people outside church, providing an oasisof welcome and a safe space in which to thrive.Messy Church is about hospitality, expressed mostevidently by eating together – whether it’s a plate ofsandwiches to share, or sausage and mash.So please come along. We meet every third Sunday of the month from 4 –6pm at Cheddon Fitzpaine Memorial Hall.

Tony your AssociateVicar writes,

Really! It’s only November! And we’ve not yet celebratedthat much forgotten season, Advent!Sorry, it’s probably that I’m now that age when so manythings can make me grumble that I feel myself turninginto the Dickens character Scrooge! I am particularlygrumpy at this time of year (or was it as early as August!)probably because of how Christmas has changed somuch since I was a child. At school we would, as children, become increasinglyexcited as Christmas Day approached. Of course, backthen this anticipation didn’t really take hold until mid-December when the first decorations were being put up.Remember the simple coloured crepe paper streamerswe used to make and string across the ceilings; even inthe school classrooms? A little holly with their red berriesadorning the mantelpiece and the obligatory mistletoehung from a doorway (that would make the childrengiggle) would be the sum total of the decorations. (Oh,apart from my auntie, a florist, who would hang a wreathon her front door…very posh I thought!)Then the Christmas tree, already dropping pine needles, would be squeezed through a doorway, erected andadorned with more streamers and tinsel. The glassbaubles that had survived from the previous year, werecarefully hung on the branches (glass not plastic) and anangel perched on the top. The tree was not completeuntil dad had wrestled with the lights! Part of the fun wasto see him getting cross because “who put these backlast year leaving them so tangled!” And that was beforehe spent an age checking every bulb in turn to find whichhad blown preventing them from working!Back then there was nothing like the ready-made andvery expensive decorations that are now available, thatso many feel obliged to purchase.Today, whilst Christmas Carols are still sung (that isunless it is politically incorrect, lest someone of anotherfaith or none might be offended!) the reason behindthose timeless songs has become lost. And as for theschool “Nativity Play”… well I’m a bit old-fashioned theretoo, in expecting it to be about the birth of Jesus notsome secular production about being nice to your

neighbour. And don’t get me started on the hugelyexpensive presents that children expect these days andthe subsequent guilt of parents who can’t give theirchildren a proper Christmas because they can’t affordthem. After all, Christmas is about the children, reallyisn’t it! No it is not! Bah humbug! No wonder poor or lonely or childless people feel so leftout! No wonder there is a huge increase in the numberof people suffering from depression, sadly often leadingto suicide because they feel disconnected from all thefestivities. Each year, as I walk around the shops and feelbombarded by adverts in the media informing me aboutall the must have presents and the deals on food anddrink; as I watch the anxious faces of people rushingaround the shops desperately trying to find the perfectpresent (at a bargain price) I feel sad. Very sad, in fact, because we have largely forgotten what it’s all about.Children are given the impression by our actions that it’sabout Father Christmas and snowmen, a winter festival. For adults it’s drinking and eating excessively (andpleasing the children) when in fact it is about thegreatest event in history. When God took human natureto live amongst us. Emmanuel! God with us. Thebeginning of his plan of salvation for all of creation inthe person of Jesus.Certainly, this is something to celebrate! But surelythere is a right way of doing that; a way that expressesour thanks and praise and awe? Surely we aredishonouring God by our excessiveness? Did he notcome to bring healing and release from all thatseparates us from God. It’s this conflict in me and otherChristians that causes us to despair at what our societyhas become so clearly exemplified in our Christmascelebrations. We want to party but because of ourloving God’s actions in Jesus.

So this Christmas,Celebrate by all means, but let’s remember whywe do so!

Have a very HappyChristmas.

Pet Service

St Augustine’s Church recentlyheld a Pet Service where prayersand hymns were accompanied bysqueaks, purrs and barks!

Celebrating 150 years of ‘modern’Reader Ministry.

For those of you wondering what ‘Reader Ministry’ isread on!The ‘office of Reader’ officially started in 1560, early inthe reign of Elizabeth 1st, through an initiative by theArchbishop of Canterbury, Malcolm Parker, thoughthe term Reader was taken from an ancient office inthe Christian Church. One of Archbishop Parker’smotives was to cope with a crisis in the number ofclergy, since the previous twenty or so years had seenchanges from Catholicism to Protestantism, back toCatholicism and then again to Protestantism. Youngmen were understandably reluctant to take upreligious vocations against this background and HenryVIII’s earlier Dissolution of the Monasteries had donelittle to encourage prospective ordinands.Parker envisaged these Readers would carry outsome of the tasks required by the church. They wererequired to gain authorisation from the bishop, andbring testimony of their character from ‘respectablemembers of the parish’. In practice though Readerswere often licensed by archdeacons during parishvisits, and records from 17th century Shropshire (fromwhence I came!) lists ‘four Readers successively in sixyears: ignorant men, and two of them immoral’. (Forany of you wondering, no, I wasn’t around in 1615!)The Civil War disrupted the Church of England, andalthough some Readers are recorded again after theRestoration in 1660, they seem to have died out byaround 1700. The revival of the office of Reader wasin 1866, and this is the cause of the Celebrations thisyear.Celebrations in London and across the country startedon Ascension Day, 5th May this year, and I attendeda special service in Wells Cathedral in October. So who and what are ‘Readers’? Well, we are laypeople from all walks of life, called by God, trainedand licensed by the Church to preach, teach, leadworship, and assist in pastoral, evangelistic and

liturgical work. Anyone can apply to join a trainingprogramme. Increasingly, Readers are part of aministry team, which might include priests, ChurchArmy officers, chaplains, Pioneer Ministers, lay-leaders and those ministering to the elderly.Archdeacon John Reed said ‘Readers were designedto be the new pioneer ministers who being laity (i.e.not priests) could reach the parts that other peoplecouldn’t reach’.I was first licensed in 1983 in St. Asaph Diocese inthe Church of Wales, transferring first to LichfieldDiocese, whilst living in Shropshire, then aftermoving to Somerset in 1999, transferring to Bath &Wells. Each parish and church has proveddistinctive, with differing needs and aspirations. I ama retired chartered surveyor, and I have been struckby God’s use of such talents as I have in helping tobuild an exciting new church whilst in Shropshire, then recently in leading the project to repair ourancient church building here at West Monkton. Myinvolvement with our local schools offers a contrastto my taking Home Communion to the elderly, andthe arrival of our new Rector, Mary, gives us all anew impetus in our journey of faith. Mary is the sixthRector I have worked with, and just like the churches, they have all been different! It has been andcontinues to be a privilege to serve. The Diocese of Bath & Wells runs highly regardedand stimulating training programmes. You might wantto check out the Diocesan website, or the ‘ReaderMinistry Explained’ and ‘The Church of EnglandReaders’ websites. If you think God is calling you to this ministry, orperhaps to other particular areas of service, and youwould like to chat things through in confidence, thenplease contact Rev. Mary, herself a former Reader,Rev. Tony or call me, and we will be happy to help.

Bird News

During these early months of winter immigrantthrushes are pouring into the country from northernand eastern lands to escape the icy cold of the taigaforests and, indeed, the frozen farmlands of countriessuch as Poland and Belorussia. Two species areprimarily involved, the large, handsome Fieldfare andthe smaller Redwing. Both of these can been seen, often in large numbers, from November onwards inand around West MonktonThe Fieldfare is a sturdy, richly coloured thrush easyto identify. The head and lower back are grey-blue incolour, with the rest of the back and wings a richrufous brown. Underneath it is creamy off-white,richly spotted with black in a regular pattern. Likemany migrant thrushes it travels in flocks, which areoften large, and these keep in contact by regularcalls, a repeated 'chack chack' which is easilyrecognised when learned. The species breeds widelyacross Northern Europe from Scandinavia to east ofthe Caspian Sea, and right across Siberia. It is,however, not limited to forests and rather like ourfamiliar resident thrushes, it also frequents largegardens and parks, particularly in towns such asKrakow in Poland.Fieldfares breed colonially and will defend their nestsaggressively, often fiercely attacking intruders, including humans. Outside the breeding season, andin their wintering grounds, they are much more waryand difficult to approach, but prolonged freezingweather often forces them into gardens where closerviews can be obtained.Numbers vary annually but, generally, they are easilyseen in West Monkton, where orchards and largetrees with mistletoe are abundant and very much totheir liking.

Like most thrushes they take a wide variety of prey, such as earthworms and other small invertebrateswhen these are available, but they also eat largequantities of berries and are particularly fond ofwindfall apples which they devour greedily. Themoors around Taunton also host large flocks ofwintering Fieldfares, and Curry Moor, downstreamfrom Newbridge, is a particularly good site for them. The Redwing is a smaller bird, much more like thefamiliar Song Thrush although, in fact, it is more

closely related to the Blackbird. It is a uniform richbrown above, with prominent creamy stripessurrounding the eye. Underneath there is typicalthrush streaking, but along the flank, just below thewing, is a red border. It too is a northern bird, with adistribution quite similar to Fieldfare, but unlike theFieldfare it breeds in Iceland. Icelandic birds are adifferent race, and can be separated with difficulty, but this is a job for the purist! Situated where we arewe receive birds from both races.Redwings are much less inclined to parks andgardens than Fieldfares, and are typically birds oftaiga birch forests. Nor are they colonial nesters. These two thrushes freely associate on the winteringgrounds, and mixed flocks are quite usual, althoughRedwings migrate mostly at night. Particularly duringwindless nights in November, especially in foggy

conditions, if you listen you will hear the thin reedy'seep' calls of the flocks as they pass overhead. The thrushes are a very large bird family, withrepresentatives across most continents, and many ofthese are long-distance migrants. I will say more inthe next issue, but it surprises some that our veryfamiliar Blackbirds and Song Thrushes also performlong migrations. The birds that regularly nest in yourgarden may remain through the winter, but even theywill move into France or Spain should the weatherworsen. Our own birds are augmented by immigrantsfrom the east and some can be recognised. If you see a particularly washed-out looking SongThrush in your garden this winter, greyish aboverather than warm brown, and more wary than most, although the same species as our British birds, itcould well have come from as far away as Siberia. Many of our wintering Blackbirds are first-winterbirds, and it is quite likely that if a male has a darkbeak rather than a yellow one, it has travelled somedistance to reach your bird table.

Brian HillSomerset Ornithological Society welcomes peoplewhatever their level of interest in birds. Our nextindoor meeting is at Ruishton Village Hall onThursday November 24th at 7.30pm, when SteveRogers will give an illustrated talk on the birds ofCornwall. Entry and refreshments free and all arewelcome. Please contact me on 01823 443503 forfurther details.

Farriers Green ParkThe new table tennis table recently purchased by theParish Council (supported by a Health and Well-being Grant from our County Councillor) wasinspected by the Police with members of Friends ofFarriers, Parish and District Councillors. Names hadbeen carved in the surface (photos sent to theHeadmaster at Heathfield School) and a number ofchips taken out of the surface each end of the table. It’s hard to understand such vandalism. The outdoor gym equipment unfortunately now hasscratch marks over much of the equipment which isjust a shame, however, it is still functional and therefor everyone to use.The park has recently had new gate posts and gatesinstalled at the lower entrance to allow mowers andother large equipment access into the park. The steps on the back footpath of the park havebeen repaired and the associated drainage works willbe completed shortly.

Please report damage immediately so that repairscan be made: and also report any late night antisocial behaviour to 101. Layby at New Cross – Cherry Grove Cross RoadsIt is disappointing to report that sometime between9:00pm on Sat 3rd September and 10.00am onSunday 4th September persons unknown ripped thelitter bin off its plinth, crushed it, and threw the lot intoLes Warren’s Field. The same night it was reportedthat a young lady, returning from an evening out, hadbeen followed up the hill and then taunted by youthsin a car 'we know where you live'.On Sunday morning Cllr Cavill rescued the bin fromthe field; straightened and refitted it with a new liner, whilst a good neighbour helped to pick up the litterstrewn over the grass. In view of the unpleasant behaviour of the nightbefore, the matter was reported on 101, and ourPCSOs were also informed.

Bus servicesFour residents of Monkton Heathfield attended theAugust meeting of the Parish Council and explainedtheir difficulties due to the withdrawal of busservices. Your Parish Council, District Councillor NCavill, and County Councillor D Fothergill have beenworking hard to find a resolution.Accepting an invitation to attend a coffee morning atthe Heathfield Community Hall, J Perrett, the SCCTravel Plan Officer gave an update of the situation. He explained that currently the County Council hasvery little influence over the non-subsidized First Busservices, which are run purely commercially. Thereare subsidized services over which SCC hasinfluence, including Slinky Bus and the volunteerdriver scheme. It was explained that part of the Travel Plan for thedevelopment is funding to subsidise a bus service atstages during the development. The SCC hasclaimed the first 50% of funding from the developers. On receipt of the funds, tenders will be invited todeliver a bus service which is currently envisaged tobe a circular route linking all parts of the MonktonHeathfield area (old and new) to go down to theCrown Medical Centre, on into the railway station,Taunton, possible Musgrove Park Hospital andback.Councillor Fothergill will be taking this forward, please contact him [email protected] via the Parish [email protected]

The best kept secret! Did you know that: In addition to the Thursday coffee mornings at WestMonkton Village Hall, there is a Wednesday coffeemorning at Heathfield Community Hall between10am and 12 noon.As explained above, the position regarding buses (orlack of them) was explained to a gathering of about20 residents at the weekly Wednesday coffeemorning at the Heathfield Community Hall inHeathfield Drive. The cakes are delicious and theconversation is interesting and informative. Pleasejust turn up, you will be very welcome.

All residents are kindly reminded that:You can report fly tipping to Taunton Deane on01823 356356. Reports have been received of flytipping in Brittons Ash Green/Hyde Lane, pleasereport incidents immediately, and if necessary reportit on 101.If you would rather not report the matter yourself, please pass the information as quickly as you can toany Councillor or the Parish Clerk. Contactinformation for Councillors is on the website,www.westmonkton.net; Chairman’s and Clerk’sphone numbers are inside the front cover of theVillage News.

Dog bins and dog foulingIn addition to the dog bins installed by the ParishCouncil, you may have seen some anti-foulingposters around the area. These are in place

because there are still people who do not observetheir duty as dog owners, and leave behind dog messwhich is obnoxious, spoiling the environment for therest of the residents. If you see dog fouling, note thetime, date, place and the dogs involved and report itto the Dog Warden via Customer Services at TauntonDeane 01823 356356. You can also report dogfouling online – visit www.tauntondeane.gov.uk typedog fouling into the search box and follow the links. The more evidence you can report, the more likely itis that the Dog Warden will be able to track down theperpetrator and get a result; which would be for thebenefit of all. There have been requests for dog bins on the newestate. When the roads and public open spaces havebeen handed over to the Council for adoption(currently, they remain the property ofPersimmon/Redrow), the Parish Council will be ableto respond to the requests for more bins to beinstalled. The Parish Council is in regular dialoguewith Persimmon and this matter has been reported tothem.

Slinky BusHave you ever used the SCC Slinky bus service? This serves all of Taunton and comes out to MonktonHeathfield/West Monkton on Mondays, Tuesdays andThursdays. In view of recent difficulties with the FirstBus Service, it has been suggested that residentsmight make their appointments at the Crown Medicalon the same day as the Slinky Bus service isavailable. SCC has informed the Parish Council thatthe Slinky Bus service will prioritise medicalappointments if you tell them when you book yourjourney. You can use your concessionary bus passon this service.Dyers Brook Wildlife CorridorDyers Brook runs through the Parish from CamelsHump by the Cricket Ground and through to AcaciaGardens, where it joins the Allens Brook. Readersmay recall that flood alleviation work was carried outat this end of Dyers Brook in 2014, clearing the banksand removing silt from the watercourse. Our ParishLengthsman has maintained the banks since thework was done. The future plan for Dyers Brook is toturn the watercourse into the Dyers Brook WildlifeCorridor. The Parish Council is already working on aproject to install a bridge across Dyers Brook, behindthe Local Centre shops to give access to HeathfieldDrive and thus shorten the walk to the shops, primaryschool and Brittons Ash Community Centre (BACH).The Parish Council has now taken another look at thewildlife corridor and is considering how it can begiven greater protection for the future, perhaps bysecuring the management of this area of Public OpenSpace. Whilst it is anticipated that some funds willcome with the scheme it is likely that futuremaintenance will have to be supported by the ParishCouncil precept. Please make your views known, by [email protected], oron 01823 413 524, or write to Parish Clerk,2 Hill Farm Cottages, West Monkton, Taunton TA2 8LW

West Monkton EveningWomen’s Institute

Greetings from West Monkton Evening WI Group. We normally have a break in August from our usualmeetings, and do something different. This August wehad a wonderful evening with a Taunton Town GuidedWalk, followed by supper at Prezzo. We all met up atCastle Green and spent an hour and a half walkingaround the Heritage Trail and hearing all aboutTaunton and its history – it was wonderful and if youever have the chance to go, you won't be disappointed.Eighteen of us, including the guide enjoyed a greatsupper afterwards. In September we had the privilege of meeting AndyMurphy who is the Community Police Officer involvedwith the ‘One Team’ project at Halcon, which is fundedby the Home Office. The Halcon Ward has the highestlevel of deprivation in the county, but during the past15 years many organisations have joined together andreached out to the people on the estate to help thembuild a better future – the motto of the One Team is‘Think differently – do differently’, they identify theproblems and try to plot the solution, helping youngfamilies, helping residents with education and helpingthem to feel needed and to encourage fulfilment inworking. One Team now has ‘Halcon Little LitterPickers’ once a month and they have introduced aGarden Competition to give people pride in theirhomes. 'Link Power' has been set up and, with thesupport of the Police who provided a van, they offergarden clearances, furniture removals and organisecommunity days – all run by people in the HalconWard. Andy is a very modest man and was quick to

say that it is very much a team effort and he could notdo what he does without such a good backing team, but his leadership has been recognised and he waspresented with the Queens Award for his excellentwork in the community.Four members of the WI, Sarah Challes, ChrisPrescott, Anne Doble and myself joined 17,000 otherwalkers in London on the 24th September to do theShine Night Walk for Cancer UK, our thoughts mainlyon our dear friend Mandy Gage and other people whohave either lost their battle or are still battling and tothose who have beaten cancer. It was a wonderfulnight (not that our feet felt that way after pounding13.1 miles on London pavements), the atmospherewas brilliant, and hopefully lots of money was raisedto continue the research work of Cancer UK. I will letyou know how much money our team raised in thenext Newsletter. We are a very friendly group, and if you like the soundof what you read about us, why not come along for ataster. New members and guests are very welcome,we meet in the Annexe of West Monkton Village Hallat 7:30 for 7:45pm start the fourth Thursday of eachmonth (unless we are having an outing and we do notmeet in August); just ring our President Ann May on01823-334168 for details. The annual cost as fromJanuary 2016 is £37.00 (plus tea/coffee) – what aBARGAIN and a great way to meet new friends !! Towhet your appetite this is the programme for 2016. The latter had a very busy month.Members helped with making up the trays for sellingthe poppies for Remembrance Day and held a WhistDrive in aid of Earl Haig’s Appeal which was wellattended. And so ends the record of West Monkton Women’sInstitute for 1965.The original document is now held in the Women’sInstitute archives and is a beautiful hand written bookwith some drawings and a lot of photos, some ofwhich we have been able to reproduce in the VillageNews. Thanks to Margaret Lomax for arranging that we coulduse this record of a time, only 50 years ago, thatseems ever more removed from what we see aroundus. Pre mobile phones and computers for all and at atime when many more people seemed to have beenenthusiastic about village activities. The very essenceof village life seems to have changed now with farfewer people born and growing up in ‘their’ village andwith an influx of new houses and new people who donot necessarily look to village activities for their sociallives.

Phoenix Photographers

‘I just take photos for the pleasure of it, not especiallyfor entering competitions’. The first words of JohnPerriam at a recent meeting. John began with verymoody black and white prints of landscapes, shot inYorkshire and on Dartmoor, including coastal images, recording the remains of long ago shipwrecks.Industrial shots in colour followed, night timeexposures of an oil refinery being particularly dramatic. The stark reality of pipework, pressure vessels etcunder floodlighting.A novel take on street photography was presented, byfixing a tripod mounted camera in the back of his car, presetting the focus and exposure manually. Aimingthe camera toward the kerbside using the car’s windowto frame the shots. Driving through town using aremote firing button, some very interesting candidimages were captured. Closing the car window duringa rain shower gave the images a very different look.Bright colours emerged again, this time on PendineSands in South Wales, of the Hot Rod fraternitydisplaying their cars, cruising on the beach. After thebreak John showed the members what he doescreatively using Photoshop. Employing compositemethods, taking segments from different pictures, blending them into one, using the myriad of toolsavailable in post production software.Creating very ethereal and unusual results. The final section was of a group, calling themselvesThe Ragged Victorians. Dressing in Victoriancostumes, not as the elite of the time, but of the poorersection of Victorian society, their purpose to highlightawareness of the suffering that ordinary peopleendured at that period of our history. All John’s work was of a very high quality, an enjoyableand entertaining evening..Check out the club’s website www.pgop.org.uk

Christmas Dangers for PetsChristmas is a magical time of year but there are lotsof potential perils for your pets at this time of year tobe mindful. There are many food items that can be dangerous indogs and cats for example:· Turkey bones can get stuck in the throats of

dogs and cats and can even pierce theirintestinal tract.

· Grapes, raisins and sultanas are toxic and cancause kidney failure and so keep your petsaway from Christmas pudding and Christmascake!

· Chocolate can cause seizures, coma and heartfailure due to the theobromine it contains. Thedarker the chocolate the more dangerous it is!

· Stuffing contains onions and garlic which candestroy red blood cells and cause a lifethreatening anaemia.

· High levels of nutmeg can affect the centralnervous system and cause seizures.

· Alcohol can cause deadly poisoning. Cats canbe particularly attracted to cocktails containingcream.

· Macadamia nuts can cause lethargy, tremors, fever, lameness and stiffness in dogs.

· Mouldy leftovers, including yoghurt, bread andcheese, can contain toxins causing rapid onsetconvulsions in dogs.

Christmas can be a stressful time for your animal too, particularly if you have a large number of guestsdescending on your house. Cats in particular are veryprone to stress and so it is important to provide asecluded area where your pet can escape to if thepartying gets too much for them. Many of the Christmas time plants are toxic to animalsand can even be fatal. Don’t allow your pets to ingestpine needles, holly, mistletoe or poinsettias and if theydo, seek urgent veterinary attention. Christmasdecorations can be very attractive to our pets, tinsel inparticular, but the problem comes if they are ingestedthey can cause an intestinal obstruction.Every veterinary practice in the UK is obliged toprovide 24 hour vet care, 365 days a year and so ifyou’re worried about your pet at any point over thefestive season then call your vet immediately.

Wellbeing: Sleepless Nights

Wellbeing Series 1 – Sleepless nights

Do you have difficulty falling asleep, or do you wakeup during the night or perhaps wake up too early inthe morning? Many people do experience these problems andprolonged periods of sleeplessness can lead to arange of negative outcomes such as, fatigue, lack ofmotivation, reduced concentration/memory,irritability, reduced immunity and an inability to copewith pressure and stress.Advances in neuroscience have helped us tounderstand the importance of sleep to both ourmental and physical health. Our REM (rapid eyemovement) sleep pattern helps us to empty our‘stress bucket’ which contains negative thoughts sothat we can deal with them in an appropriate andrational way. However if we are piling too much intoour stress bucket then our mind will wake us up asREM is restricted to only 20% of our sleep pattern. Therefore we need to make optimal use of our REMso that our mind can naturally restore and repairitself. The brain does this by creating a range ofchemical responses that produce variousneurotransmitters such as serotonin, endorphins anddopamine that act as catalysts for healthy wellbeing. To produce the right balance of these chemicals weneed to:· Think positively - focusing on what’s good· Engage in positive interactions – such as meeting

up with a friend for coffee· Carry out positive actions/activities – such as

going for a stroll along our lovely canal or sortingout the shed that you have been meaning to dofor some time!

Some people need short term professional input tohelp them with this, Solution Focused Hypnotherapyworks quickly to get your sleeping patterns back ontrack, so that your mind can naturally restore andrepair itself leaving you energized, motivated andable to cope so much better with every daychallenges and demands.I also offer free group taster sessions to localcommunity groups and organisations so please get intouch if this would be of interest. In the next edition after all the festivities we shall befocusing on weight loss.www.sarahgamblehypnotherapy.co.uk 2Swingbridge, Bathpool, Taunton, TA2 [email protected]: 07971 686888

West Monkton Cricket Club - the Last Match of the Season

Jo Pearson and Tricia Cavill both attended the last match of the season at West Monkton Cricket Club, whichwas a lovely way to enjoy a sunny Saturday afternoon. The match was played at the Cricket Club's Open Dayon 10th September 2016.You may wonder why some of the photos seem to show fishing rather than cricket - the explanation is that ifyou hit the cricket ball hard enough it will land in the attenuation pond or the Dyers Brook. Balls reaching thisfar do not score any more runs, but they do create a fishing opportunity! Is this 'doing an Ian Botham'? - heused to delight in trying to hit the ball over the stand and into the River Tone when playing at the CountyCricket Ground.
