OneofthegreatadvantagesofanSDRisthatitallowsanentirebandtobequicklyscannedvisually,soyouneverhavetomissasignal.Butwe’realwayshungryformoresohowaboutkeepinganeyeonotherbandsaswell?TheRSP/SDRunocombinationallowsyoutodothisaslongasthebandsofinterestfallwiththemaximumsampledbandwidthoftheRSP,i.e.10MHz.1. Thequickandeasyway-switchbackandforthusingthe“Band”buttons:
• Let’syouexaminebandsovertheentire1kHzto2GHzcoveragerangeoftheRSP,however...
• Notatruesimultaneousview
• Ifsetupaspanadapteryoumaynotwanttohaveyourrigswitchingbackandforth,butyoucanusetheRSYN1buttontotemporarilydisablesyncingtheRSPandtherig

3. Settingitup(somemathsrequired!)
• Bandstobemonitoredmustfallwiththesampled“chunk”ofspectrumfromtheRSP(10MHzmax,lessifyourPCcannotsupportit)
• Example–Monitoringthe40mand20mbands40m:7.0–7.3MHz20m:14.0–14.3Mhz
• Soweneedtosamplethespectrumfrom7.0–14.3MHz=7.3MHz
• ThereforeweneedtouseaSampleRate>7.3MHz,i.e.8MHz
• OurLOmustbeset(andlocked)tomidwaythroughtherange,say~10.5MHz
• Oursampledrangeisnow10.5+/-4MHz=6.5–14.5MHz

Observethatwhiletheportionofthespectrumcovering40misquiteflat,thereisaquitesharprolloffabove14MHzinthe20mband!WecouldincreasetheLOfrequencytohelpthe20mband,butwewillfindthatweendupwithsomerolloffatthebottomofthe40mband.ThesolutioninthiscaseistoincreasetheSRto9MHzandthenwecanseewegetaflatresponseforboththe20mand40mbands:

HereyouwillseethattheSRhasbeenincreasedto9MHz,andtheLOfrequencychangedto10.6MHz,resultinginaflatspectrumforboththe20mand40mbands.Feelfreetoadjusttheseparameterstosuitwhicheverbandsyouareinterestedin.NowwecangoaheadandlocktheLOfrequencyusingthe“LOLOCK”buttonintheMainwindow.Then,gotoSP1andclickonafrequencynearthemiddleofthe40mband.UsetheZoomarrowstozoominonthespectrum,atthissampleratethemaximumzoomwillgiveyou562.5kHzspectrumwidth.Asyouzoominthetunedfrequencywillreturntothecenterofthedisplay,butifyouloseit,justclickontheVFObuttonatthebottomofthewindowtocenterit.Onceyouhavezoomedinalltheway,youcandragthefrequencyaxisleftandrighttocenterthe40mbandinthedisplay:
NowgototheSP1windowforthesecondVRXandrepeattheprocedure,butthistimeclickinthemiddleofthe20mband.Asyouzoominonthespectruminthelowerwindowyoumaynoticethefrequencyscaleintheupperwindowhaschangedtofollowsuit,don’tworryjustclickontheVFObuttonatthebottomofthetopwindowtorestorethecorrectfrequencydisplay:

Youmaybewonderingifyoucanalsomonitor30m,whichafterallisalsowithinourselectedchunkofspectrum(10.6+/-4.5MHz).Theanswerisyesyoucan!

5. Panadapters
IfyouhaveapanadaptersetupviaOmniRigyoucanchoosewhichVRXcontrolstherigbyclickingontheRSYN1buttonatthetopoftheRXControlwindow:
InatypicalscenarioyouwoulduseoneVRXtoworkaparticularbandwithyourrig,mutingtheaudiofromSDRunoandlisteningtoreceivedaudiothroughtherig.MeanwhileyoucanmonitoranotherbandinSDRunousingthesecondVRX.IfyouseeanythingofinterestyoucanunmutethatVRXandlisten,ifit’sasignalofinterestyoucanthenclickonthecorrespondingRSYN1buttontosyncyourrigtothatfrequency:
Note:thistechniquecanonlyworkiftheRSPhasabroadrangeRFsignaltosample,eitherfromasharedantennaorRXoutfromtherig.IfyourpanadapterisconfiguredtouseIFoutfromtherigthenthespectrumtheRSPcansampleanddisplayislimitedbytheIFbandwidthofyourrig.
