in developing

vocabulary.

They are studied

because they occur

across a wide range

of content areas and

domains.

They promote

additive bilingualism

in Spanish speaking

students who can

use cognates as a

means to learn the

new vocabulary.

Now I know what

these roots mean. If

“cap” means “head,”

I can assume that the

words “capital” and

“capitol” have to do

with the head of

something. I know

the words are related

to government. But

why the difference in

spelling? Capital

refers to the city

where the

government is

located, capitol, I

remember from a

previous unit, refers

to the building in

which the legislative

power meets.

T: We also know that

the root “dent (or

dont) means “tooth,

and the word dentist

refers to a

professional who

takes care of the

health of people’s

teeth. But what

about the word

orthodontist?

Ss: (S)he is the

doctor who puts

braces on people.

T: Now let’s think:

“Why do people

need braces?”

Ss: “To make their

teeth prettier.”

T: Hmm..not only to

make them prettier, if

we know that “ortho”

means straight or

right, what might be

a better definition for

orthodontist?

Ss: The doctor that

makes your teeth

straight.
