Monday 30th April River Thames Cruise and Windsor Depart Oxted 8.45am (Route A) for Boulters Lock, Maidenhead, one of the liveliest locks on the River Thames where we join a boat for a trip down the river passing the houses of the stars, going through Boveney and Bray Locks, past Oakley Court and Monkey Island. The boat continues past Windsor Racecourse, with spectacular views of Windsor Castle, arriving lunchtime in Windsor, where the remainder of the day will be at leisure to maybe explore Windsor Castle; or wander through the picturesque centre, perhaps to Peascod Street and St. Leonard’s Road, with their fishmongers, bakers, delicatessens, boutiques and craft shops. Let the ‘train take the strain’ on a magical journey around the northeast corner of the Gardens, travelling over a bridge, through a tunnel and across a pond in the Summer Lane Garden; along the top of the Rock Garden and across a viaduct to ‘Exbury North’ in the American Garden. Leonardslee Gardens andDolls House ExhibitionDepart Oxted 10.00am (Route A) for the drive to the newly re-openedLeonardslee Gardens. Closed to the public in 2010, the gardens are nowowned by Penny Streeter, the owner of the Benguela Collectionvineyard and Mannings Heath Golf Course and Wine Estate who hassaid, “We will restore the gardens to their former glory and create newfacilities on site, including tea rooms and dining facilities…”A kaleidoscope of colour sweeps throughout the grounds, listing thegarden as Grade I in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardensof Special Historic Interest in England. Set in a steep-sided valley; theponds contain a colony of Carp fish and the combination of parkland,lawn and forest land inhabits a rare colony of wallabies and a numberof deer species who wander semi-freely throughout the estate.The rich flora in the garden was planted by Sir Edmund Loder, aVictorian plant collector. First planted in 1801, the gardens are notedfor spring displays of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnoliasand bluebells. Ashdown Forest Llama Park& Sheffield Park GardensDepart Oxted 10.00am (Route B) for the drive to the Ashdown Forest Llama Park, whichenjoys stunning views over the Ashdown Forest. As you stroll around the unique farmwalk you will encounter the wonderful llama and alpaca characters, some at close rangeand see their ever-growing variety of animals which currently includes llamas, alpacas,reindeer, horses, donkeys, Jacob sheep, Kune Kune pigs, Peafowl and poultry. The oak-beamedrestaurant is the ideal setting in which to enjoy a freshly home-cooked lunch before taking our seats for the matinée performanceof Move Over Mrs Markham. The setting is an elegant London flatbelonging to the happily married Philip and Joanna Markham.Philip, a straight-laced publisher of children’s books, hasreluctantly agreed to let Henry Lodge, his partner, borrow theapartment for the evening to entertain a new girlfriend. At thesame time, Joanna Markham has allowed Linda Lodge to borrowthe apartment so she can rendezvous with her lover. What nobodyknows is that the Interior Designer has also decided that this isthe night he wants to try out the new oval bed – with the au pairgirl When the Markhams’ evening out is cancelled, it is too late tolet any of the parties know and three sets of hopeful lovers allconverge on the bedroom at the same time. The situation isfurther complicated by the arrival of Olive Harriet Smythe, a dourand successful authoress. The frantic efforts of the Markhams tohide the amorous goings-on and, at the same time sign up MissSmythe, lead to a hectic and hilarious evening where, as in allfarces, chaos and confusion reign!! The Mill is thrilled that RayCooney, the world-renowned master of comedy, will direct this play that he co-wrote with the brilliant John Chapman.Don’t miss this saucy, sparkling and riotously funny treat. Constable CountryConstable Country – how many other artists have had anarea of the country named after them? “I should paint myown places best” John Constable said and we are sure youwill be as inspired as he was, as we journey through thearea associated with our famous painter.Departing from Oxted 8.00am (Route A) we make ourway to the Marks Tey Hotel. Here we meet our guideand have a comfort break with tea/coffee and biscuitsincluded before continuing our journey into the Area ofOutstanding Natural Beauty that is “ConstableCountry”. During the course of the day we will visit EastBergholt, which is the village where John Constable wasborn and see the church and other landmarksassociated with the famous painter. Our lunch stop willbe at Dedham, an attractive village on the Essex/Suffolkborder, whose beautiful main street is lined withGeorgian fronted houses alongside old inns, tea rooms,a large arts/crafts centre, and an impressive 15th-century church. It is also where John Constable went toschool. An optional short guided tour will be offered atDedham. We will then proceed to Flatford Mill whereour Blue Badge Guide will take us on a guided walk tosee the scenes of four of John Constable’s paintingsincluding the famous Haywain site.
