Book Week
I am very much looking forward to the Book Character Parades
tomorrow morning. I will be getting into the spirit of things and there will
be Adidas prizes for our best dressed students as judged by a panel of
experts (myself and the School Captains).
NAPLAN
As parents would be well aware, NAPLAN is in the media this week. In
fact, the media knew the results before we did and as I write this, I am
unable to provide more clarity around our own results, due to a timing
issue with the release of data to schools. That said, I am confident that
our students will have again done well and it is important to remember
that the NAPLAN is a snapshot in a child’s learning progression. It is not
the be all and end all and I have never asked a prospective job
applicant how they went on their NAPLAN test. At MPS, we use a
tailored suite of assessment tools to identify student progress, in order to
teach every child at their individual point of need. Our assessments are
diagnostic and give us far quicker feedback than the NAPLAN ever will.
By the time families get their results, they will be 3 months out of date
and your child will have already moved on. We will have done reading
benchmarks for the whole school since then (multiple times), completed
multiple Big Writes and completed numeracy assessments, on top of a
range of formative assessments that enable us to adjust our teaching as
required. Students who require additional extension or intervention will
have been getting that support throughout this time and their Individual
Learning Plans will reflect their own goals. The NAPLAN will help us to
identify areas where we as teachers can improve our practice and rest
assured, we will work collaboratively to crunch the numbers as we
maintain our “continuous improvement” focus. Early next month, the
aggregated data will be presented to school council before I relay that
information via subsequent newsletters. To the students, well done on
giving it your best shot. Know that your teachers are here to help
support you as you focus on the areas you need to improve on next
and best wishes for the remainder of the year.
Parent Opinion Survey
The closing date for the online Parent Opinion Survey has been
extended to Sunday 2 September 2018. Parents can submit completed
online surveys until 11:59PM Sunday 2 September 2018. MPS greatly
appreciates the support of all families in completing the survey. Your
feedback will assist us to craft our 2019 Annual Implementation Plan so
that we can provide your children the best education we can.
Capital Works Update
Last week, Stuart Hattwell, our School Council President Ed Meszaros
and I joined representatives from the Victorian School Building Authority
and the North East Victoria Region’s Provision and Planning team to
interview and select the architects that will design and guide our
stadium and modernisation project.
The panel’s decision was unanimous in selecting Tectura as the architects for our project. Tectura have
experience working with many schools and their presentation showed a strong understanding of the brief,
including the importance of our Australiana theme. I am excited by the opportunity to work with them and
over the coming months, we will hopefully plan for a first class facility to benefit our students and the local
community. On Tuesday October 9th (2nd day of Term 4), Tectura will be holding a community forum at MPS to
provide some insight into the proposed works and to obtain feedback from the broader community to ensure
we deliver the best possible value for the school and the Mulgrave community. The forum will begin at 7pm
and we look forward to seeing as many families represented as possible.
Traffic
The MPS school rules are respect, safety, responsibility, resilience and listen. In the past, I have written articles
about traffic safety around the school and even this morning, met with representatives from Monash Council,
including the Mayor Paul Klisaris and Deputy Mayor Shane McCluskey, to explore ways we can alleviate
congestion around the school. I do recognise that this is a significant issue, but it is one that is beyond our
immediate control. It is our hope that we will establish a pick up/drop off zone in the reserve along Maygrove
Way at the rear of the school, but this will take some time to organise, as the Monash council must agree to it
and then fund it in a future budget. Until such time as we can get council on board, I urge all families to treat
each other with respect on the roads and put safety first. I understand that it is easy to be upset by another
driver, but sometimes we make mistakes and in most cases, it is not the intent of the driver to upset others.
What should not occur is verbal or physical abuse, particularly when students are present. As adults we have
a responsibility to model the school rules around the neighbourhood and do our best to maintain a calm
demeanour to show our children what it means to be both respectful and resilient. I would really appreciate
everyone’s understanding and cooperation in this matter.
Curriculum Day
A reminder that our curriculum day with Dr. Andrew Fuller is coming up on Monday September 10th. Please
make alternate arrangements for the care of your child, as the school will be closed for the day.
End of Term 3
An early reminder to all families that students will be dismissed at 2:30pm on Friday September 21st. Students
who are not collected by 2:45pm will not be supervised, as staff have other duties to attend to. If you cannot
pick your child up by 2:45pm, please book them into the after school care program. Please contact Extend to
make a booking.
Charles Spicer - Principal
Hi all,
Its Una and Theo back for another article. This article will be about the Teachers vs. Students Basketball game.
The basketball game was usually meant to happen on the 8th of August but because of the rain we
postponed it until the 22nd of August. The game started at 2:30pm and went until around 3:00pm.The teachers
won by 2 POINTS! Everyone thought that they were going to smash the student. Everyone played the best
they could and had amazing sportsmanship.
This time we decided to interview a couple of teachers
Mr Boyle-
How do you think you played? -
I think I played ok, it was good to see the staff and students having fun playing a game that I love
What was your tactic? –
My tactic was to pass first and share the ball around so everyone got an opportunity to score.
How do you think you will go in our soccer game that’s coming up? -
I was fairly confident coming into the basketball match, however we only won by 2 points, to be honest I am
a little nervous for the upcoming soccer match because I have seen how good the students are at lunchtime.
Miss Peel-
How do you think you played? –
I think I played okay, and I really enjoyed it.
What was your tactic? –
Mr Spicer and I had a tactic to pass fast and score
How do you think you will go in our soccer game that’s coming up? –
I am more used to playing with my hands than my feet because I play footy. I am really excited.

Back when my son was a newborn, our newly-formed coffee group often found ourselves messaging each other in
the middle of the night, while we were awake feeding our babies. I remember someone suggesting that we make
our coffee get-togethers at 3am. It was a joke, but the most comforting thing about it was knowing that, at that
moment, I wasn’t alone. While everybody else was asleep, there were others out there, doing the same thing.
Six years and one more child later, I’m just needing a little reassurance that once again, I’m not alone because
wow, getting my kids out the door in the morning? Definitely a challenge. I know I’m not the only one (tell me I’m
not the only one) who repeats, “Get dressed” commands in ever-increasing tones and frequencies over and over
and over again. Who cajoles another bite of breakfast into my daughter, who despairs when my son takes forever
to put on his shoes.
I think there should be a dedicated area in the school playground or childcare carpark where parents can gather
and celebrate making it through another morning.
There are others out there – maybe you’re one of them – in homes all over the place, doing the same thing. (I’ve
even pondered on a possible name for this – The Patient Parent Puddle? The Commiseration Corner? The Got-Out-
The-Door Get-Together?)
I’ve tried many things to make getting out the door less painful. Here’s what we’ve found works at our place – for
now, at least. A routine
A list of things that need to get done, in an easy-to-follow pattern, with a reward at the end. Right now, a simple
Google image that I printed off and stuck on our fridge seems to be doing the trick. It shows the things that need to
get done before we leave the house on a school/childcare morning and is mostly to help my six year old take
responsibility for what he needs to do. Go to the toilet, eat breakfast, get dressed, brush his teeth, pack his bag,
and put his shoes on.
The rule is the kids need to do their jobs before they can play. (This hardly ever happens but it’s important for later
on in the process). I set the oven timer, and if all the jobs are done when the timer goes off, he gets to put a small
magnet on the fridge. Once he accumulates seven magnets, he gets $2, which he can spend at the two dollar
shop, school tuck shop, or save.
Getting up before the kids
It’s taken me years to do this. Back when the kids had unpredictable waking hours, it just wasn’t doable. I never
knew when I was going to be pulled out of a deep sleep and so I just couldn’t bring myself to do it to myself with an
alarm earlier than absolutely necessary. Now, they know to stay in their room until a certain time so I set my alarm
for an hour before this and get myself sorted before they’re up.
Humour
The kids respond better to this and it instantly lightens the atmosphere.
Why is it so much easier to be serious than light-hearted? For me it takes consciously flicking a switch to engage my
playful brain. The kids respond better to this and it instantly lightens the atmosphere. We talk gibberish or sing at the
breakfast table, make finger puppets out of the kids’ socks while they’re putting them on, or just go along with
whatever imaginative buzz they’re on that morning.
Knowing what makes my kids tick
My son loves to race me to get dressed. We call out updates to each other from our bedrooms, “I’m getting my
pants on!”, “I almost have my jumper on!” The finale is when we race across the hall and jump on the other per-
son’s bed. Whoever gets there first wins the getting dressed race.
My son loves to race me to get dressed.
It must be said that this strategy does not work for my three-year-old daughter. She has no interest in mum’s
made-up competitions. What works for her is laying down a challenge. “I bet you can’t get dressed by yourself.”
Sure enough, she usually disappears into her room and returns a few minutes later with a smug smile on her face
and in a (very) unique, (very) layered, (very) multi-coloured clothing creation.
Letting it go when it all turns to custard
I’m learning to accept this and let the control go.
As much as I’d love a perfectly smooth morning where my kids do as they say as soon as I ask, it never happens.
Let’s face it, kids are kids. They’re going to screech, yell, complain, ignore me, and get distracted occasionally.
Probably more than occasionally. I’m learning to accept this and let the control go. Yesterday morning my son got
distracted playing and no matter how many reminders I gave him, he wouldn’t budge. Eventually it got to within a
couple of minutes of the timer going off and he said to me, “I don’t care about getting a magnet today, Mum.” I
had to choose to lose the battle to win the war.
Of course, you learn pretty quickly as a parent that things change. What works today may not work tomorrow. On
days like today, it helps to know there’s others out there, fighting the same morning battlefield. See you in the
Commiseration Corner.

pending on your votes, please go to extend.com.au website and vote for Faiza! We really appreciate your sup-

During the past couple of weeks, the children have explored several activities. In art and craft, we made beautiful
Fairy houses, Funny Rock people, Winter painting, and in another art activity we made fabulous pictures with alu-
minium foil.
In science, children had an opportunity to experiment with Oil and water and had so much fun creating fireworks
in the bottles.
Once again, our master chefs were engaged in making many healthy dishes. Our Sweet Potatoes Spaghetti Pizza
and Pumpkin soup were delicious, so was the Watermelon Krispy slice. Last week, for the great start of the day we
added refreshing Strawberry milk shake, French toast and pancakes to our breakfast club, and loved them. We
also celebrated multicultural day with yummy Indian delight called Burfi!
Auslan sign language is advancing well. The children are now learning to sign numbers and everyday vocabulary.
Apart from these activities, our mystery rock finding challenge was also fun and last Friday our working bee, gave
everyone an opportunity to keep our school environment clean and tidy.
Physical activities are always fun part of our program, we played several games such as: Basketball, 40-40, Pac
Man Tiggy, Guards and Soldiers, Line Tiggy, Cops and Robbers, Kabbadi, Bean bag challenge, Golden Child and
many more.
Next weeks activities are;
Monday 3rd September: Art and Craft - Cool newspaper Cat/ Volcano and Ice-cream
Tuesday 4th September: Science - Bouncing egg/ Silly Bananas
Wednesday 5th September: Art and Craft Collage/ Duck ball
Thursday 6th September: Specialist Cooking - Fruit scones / 123 bumble bee
Friday 7th September: Community Link - Afternoon tea with senior citizen/Board games
