An all-new 2013 SRT Viper coupe goes on sale this fall. The 2013Viper was revealed at the New York International Auto Show. Onceknown as the Dodge Viper, the Chrysler Group's flagship sports carnow flies the flag of its SRT brand.

This fifth-generation of the American hot-rod supercar is intendedoffer superior craftsmanship, new technologies and ergonomicimprovements while maintaining a visceral driving experience andawe-inspiring performance. Champions of the supercar projectreported a gut-wrench-ing period of uncertain-ty as they wonderedwhether there would beanother Viper. It hasindeed survived and apparently in a big way.

The 2013 SRT Viper is powered by an all-aluminum 8.4-liter V10that SRT estimates will deliver 640 horsepower at 6150 rpm and600 pound-feet of torque at 4950 rpm. SRT claims that's the mosttorque of any naturally aspirated sports car engine in the world. It'salso an increase of 40 horsepower over the 2010 Viper.Compression ratio is 10.2:1.

The 2013 Viper is equipped with a 6-speed Tremec manual gear-box designed for shorter throws and more precise shifting.The new Viper chassis boasts a 50-percent improvement in torsion-al stiffness over the previous-generation version. A rigid chassis isthe key to sharp handling, high-speed stability, and ride quality.About 200 pounds lighter than the previous-generation, the newViper will weigh about 3,200 pounds, the Viper GTS with SRT

Track Package will weigh about 3,220 pounds. Weight distributionis reported to be 49.6 percent front, 50.4 percent rear. The fronttrack is wider than on the 2010 Viper. Wheelbase is 98.8 inches,overall length 175.7 inches, width 76.4 inches.

The suspension looks like something out of a race car, and essen-tially it is. Aluminum unequal-length upper and lower A arms withshort upper arms and long lower arms are designed to provide opti-mum camber to keep tires in maximum road contact, the name of

the game in hard cor-nering. Performancecoil springs, gas-charged Bilstein mono-tube dampers and tubu-

lar stabilizer bars front and rear complete the setup. The upgradeViper GTS will feature a two-mode adjustable suspension for race-car handling sharpness or touring on the street.

Electronic stability control is provided, a first for Viper. The sys-tem offers two modes on the Viper: Full On and Full Off. On theViper GTS the system has four modes: Full On, Sport, Track, andFull Off. The settings affect the Vehicle Dynamic Control andDynamic Traction Control. Full Off deactivates both but leavesactive the ABS and Electronic Brake-force Distribution.The new exterior design was sculpted for high-speed stability and aslippery 0.36 drag coefficient, according to SRT. The body is madeof carbon-fiber and aluminum. It isn't a thing of beauty but it has adominating presence with its tough, muscular curves and low

stance. The cockpit sits way back behind a hood aslong as the deck of an aircraft carrier. It's some-what evocative of the new Ferrari F12 but looksmuch less modern with fender gills, hood scoop,splitter air dam and duck-tail rear spoiler, morelike a 1973 Chevrolet Corvette or a 1963 Ferrari250 GTO. But it isn't as pretty as those cars.Mostly, it looks powerful. The hood is forward-hinged, so no worries of it blowing open at 200mph. The exhaust exits in front of the rear tires.

The new interior will set new standards with pre-mium materials and superior craftsmanship, SRTsays. The Viper has not exceled in these areas inthe past. Unlike on previous models, the interiorsurfaces of the new Viper are sewn and there'smore padding. Sabelt racing seats use a light-weight Kevlar/fiberglass shell and are designed tooffer improved thigh support. Deep bolsters aredesigned to keep the driver in place when corner-ing hard. The seats are lower than on previousmodels, but there's more seat travel with morelegroom and seat-height adjustability has beenadded. SRT says the 2013 Viper will be the most

spacious to date.The 2013 Viper will come with a new 7-inch, full-color, customizable instrument display. In addi-tion, the Uconnect connectivity system features an8.4-inch touchscreen, but also provides a set ofhard keys for commonly used functions and tradi-tional knobs for tuning the radio and adjusting thevolume. That sounds good. Fussy controls are notgood in a supercar. The new Viper will comeloaded with Sirius XM Travel Link and HarmanKardon audio.

We have no idea how much these cars will costbut are guessing they'll run slightly more than the2010 models, which retailed for $83,895. No wordon a new roadster.

SRT, for Street and Racing Technology, is theChrysler Group's performance brand. A new ViperGTS-R race car was also unveiled at the 2012New York auto show and SRT announced it wouldcompete in the American Le Mans Series.

OverviewAudi has the engine line down. The 2013Audi A5 comes with the venerable silky211-horsepower 2.0-liter turbochargedengine, which has long been the king offour-cylinder engines. While the 246-horsepower BMW, 247-horsepowerFord, and 220-horsepower Hyundai, all2.0-liter turbo fours, have been lettingAudi know the reign is over, Audi's 2.0is still a great base engine for the A5.And Audi quattro all-wheel drive is atthe top of its class, adept and experi-enced in snow, mud and wet or icystreets. It seems a shame to buy an Audiwith front-wheel drive and miss out onquattro.

It's hard to find a direct statistical com-petitor to the four-seat A5 or S5, consid-ered a grand touring coupe or cabriolet.The Infiniti G37 Coupe is quite similar,but after that you'll find differences inthe number of doors or seats. TheMercedes C-Class or BMW 3 Seriescoupe or convertible with all-wheel drive(both with 5 seats) might be cross-shopped, or the Nissan Maxima (4 seats,4 doors). When all is said and done, we'dsay the Mercedes C250, if similarlyequipped, most closely compares to theAudi A5 in size, powertrain and price. Ifyou were to consider leaving the realmof grand touring to look at cars of a sim-ilar size, you'd find a bewildering longlist of sedans including Lexus ES, AcuraTL, Buick LaCrosse, Hyundai Sonata,Volkswagen Passat, Subaru Legacy,Toyota Avalon, Chrysler 200, HondaAccord, Chevrolet Impala, Ford Fusion,and even the Audi A4. All of thempriced lower than the A5.Worth considering, however, is thatKelley Blue Book announced the 2012cars with best resale value, and Audi A5

The 2013 Audi A5 and Audi S5 get leaner,sleeker and more muscular. That's physically

true, with a new nose, and true to the line,with the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 bumping

the 4.2-liter V8 out of the S5.

With the new V6, the 2013 Audi S5 acceler-ates as quickly as last year's V8 version andgets better fuel mileage. But the game isn'tover for the V8: The V8 stays on top of theperformance pile by bumping itself to 450horsepower for use in the 2013 Audi RS5.


won the luxury class, going away. According toKBB.com, the 2012 A5 is worth 64.7 percentof its new cost after 36 months, and 41 percentof its cost after 60 months. Second place after60 months was the Mercedes SLK, way downat 34 percent.The A5 is subtly beautiful. Its clean con-tours eliminate the need for stylists totack on character lines as with manyother cars. We think Audi is better look-ing than BMW here.

The A5 and S5 got a facelift for 2013,and it's a lovely job. The grille is round-ed at the upper edges and nar-rowed at the bottom, to make itmore shapely and less aggressive.New headlamps are sleek, small,and artful, with available LEDrunning lights tracing a linearound their dancing sharp edges.

Welcome changes to the 2013 A5also include streamlining of theMMI Navigation system and con-trols, reducing the number of but-tons from eight to four. The three-zone climate control system hasalso been slightly simplified.There's also more connectivity,with available Audi Connect,including Google Earth for navi-gation and Wi-Fi for surfing.The cabin is sophisticated butsimple, and nicely functional. Achoice of leather is availablealong with different types ofwood, carbon fiber, aluminum orstainless steel trim. Withoutexception, the materials are pleas-ant. The standard A5 leather seatsare excellent, a nice level of firm-ness and bolstering. Howeverheated seats, navigation, andrearview camera are all optional equip-ment, an extra bite on top of the healthyluxury price.

The instruments are clean and clear, includinga trip information display that's easily scrolledthrough. A big clear white digital speed num-ber can be displayed there. The leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel is tidy,with grips at the right places and thumbwheelcontrols on each side spoke. It tilts and tele-scopes for drivers of different sizes and prefer-ences.

At night the cabin is pretty, with deep amberillumination, smoked-lens lamps mounted inthe roof, and shaded map lights. However indirect sunlight, the display screen at the top ofthe center stack is unreadable, even with itsshade. In our Cabriolet with the top down, we

couldn't tune the radio because we couldn'tread the orange numbers on the screen.Rear passengers are catered to, with a widearmrest that folds down over central storagetrays, reading lights, two speakers per side,coat hooks, outboard storage pockets, cuphold-ers, and a pair of vents with adjustable temper-ature control. Legroom is in short supply but

better than that of the Infiniti G Coupe.Trunk space is relatively small, but larger thanthat of the G37 Coupe or Mercedes C-Classcoupe. The A5 rear seat folds, allowing accessto the trunk, although not in the Cabriolet,whose trunk loses 2 cubic feet of space withthe top down and folded.

The MMI (multi-media interface) controlsmany of the car's functions with a central con-trol knob, somewhat like BMW iDrive andMercedes COMAND systems, only MMI isquicker because it demands fewer clicks. Thescreen at the top center of the dashboard dis-plays audio information and the optional navi-gation and rear camera. But having drivenBMWs with 10-inch screens that can display

navigation and audio at the same time, we nowlike them big. With Audi Connect, the naviga-tion can be overlayed on Google Earth map-ping.

The strength of the A5 is its smoothness atspeed. The overachieving 2.0-liter tur-bocharged engine feels fastest from 50 to 70mph, where you need it; that's part due to theexcellent Tiptronic 8-speed automatic transmis-sion with a manual mode. The engine deliversstrong torque over a wide range from 1500 to4200 rpm, to propel the car from intersectionsand up hills. It accelerates from 0 to 60 in 6.2seconds.

Fuel economy is an EPA-rated 20/30 mpgCity/Highway for an A5 Coupe with quat-tro and 8-speed automatic, or 22/32 mpgwith 6-speed manual. The A5 Cabriolet israted 24/31 mpg. The A5 models allrequire Premium gasoline.

The A5 chassis and suspension are anexcellent package, perfectly comfortablearound town on patchy pavement, whilebeing totally capable on winding roads,and we can't say that about many cars. Thehandling is responsive and firm, whenpushed to the reasonable limit. The A5 isone of the best in this area. And there areoptions and upgrades to make the handlingeven better in the curves. Audi DriveSelect allows programmable modes of per-formance.

The Audi S5 is another animal. It's pow-ered by a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 pro-ducing 333 horsepower and 325 pound-feetof torque. It's fueled by direct injection andbreathes through a two-stage intake mani-fold. It's mated to a 7-speed twin-clutchtransmission that shifts in .2 seconds. Itaccelerates from 0 to 60 in 4.9 seconds. S8gets an EPA-rated 18/28 mpg with auto-matic, 17/26 mpg with manual. An optionalactive rear differential overdrives the out-

side rear tire in corners, forcing the front end toturn in more quickly. It also communicateswith the vehicle's Drive Select system and sta-bility control to help maintain control in emer-gency maneuvers.

And there's nothing quite like the Audi RS5with the lusty torque from its powerful V8engine. It's EPA-rated at 16/23 mpg.

Driving ImpressionsOne standout strength of the Audi A5 issmoothness at speed, up there around 80 mph.And the overachieving engine, a 2.0-liter turbomaking 211 horsepower, feels fastest from 50to 70, exactly where you need it. Gift giving when I was younger was always more of giving fromthe heart than from the wallet. My two fondest memories of thatwere from two of my dearest family members who are no longerwith me and my presents were actually modes of transportation.

For Christmas, just after I turned 12, I received the first. It was myfirst 10-speed bicycle. My pépère used to gather up used bicycleparts that people discarded and he built me the best bicycle that Icould ever ask for and then my dad gave it a new blue paint joband is was like new. All my friends were jealous and could notbelieve that my "new bike" was made from scratch and betterthan all of theirs. I used this bicycle to ride all over townand once I got my license and no longer needed thebicycle, it was donated to a needy family in town.The pre-teen that received it was so thankful. Thisstarted the traditionfor his other 17g r a n d c h i l -

dren whom all received homemade bicycles as well over the years.My pépère, the "junkman" passed on in 1995 shortly after he builthis last bike for the youngest grandchild. My oldest son, pépère'sfirst great-grandchild even got his first bike from pépère as wellwhich he then gave to his little brother, my youngest son, as pépèrewas no longer with us to give him his own "pépère original."

When I turned 16, I remember getting my permit and driv-ing my dad's 1972 Pontiac LeMans.My dad was a mechanic/auto bodyperson and his "hobby" was

restoring any car that came hisway. I remember just before I started driving, he had

restored a 1966 Ford Mustang convertible and a 1965Chevrolet Corvette. Boy did I dream he would

was just before Christmas in 1983, I gothome from the RMV and he handed me thekeys to his blue Pontiac. I asked him if heneeded me to run somewhere and get some-thing for him and he said "No, it's yours."

I couldn'tbelieve myears and tearscame to myeyes. Ithought Iwould haveto save upforever toactually getmy first vehicle. Now I wouldn't even haveto walk or get a ride to high school anymore.

About a week later, my dad said he needed toborrow the car as he just wanted to checksome things on it, so he brought me to school.Well, when he picked me up from school, Iwaited a little bit outside with friends andwhen he turned the corner into the parkingarea, I had yet another surprise. My PontiacLeMans was no longer blue. He had paintedit magenta and had installed new rims, tires,

and a hood scoop, my favorite color beingany hue of purple.

This time, I could not believe my eyes. Allmy friends were in awe. The next day, mynow magenta Pontiac LeMans was the talk ofthe school. Some of the other students in theschool had brand new cars, but mine was theenvy of all. Everyone wanted a ride and

thought it was the coolest thing that my dadhad worked so hard and done so much topresent me with the gift of a lifetime.

My Christmas memories are sentimental bothbecause of the items I received, but mostlybecause of who they came from. My dadwould be so excited if he were still with us tosee the retro versions of the old cars beingbrought back almost 50 years later.

While you are seeing some American car

manufacturers expanding into the future withhigh performance vehicles like a lot ofEuropean companies and/or going green,several have gotten nostalgic. GeneralMotors redesigned the Chevrolet Camaromirroring the old 1960's models. Ford reju-venated their current line bringing back theoriginal looks of the Mustang and theThunderbird. Dodge is emulating the old

be listed on my letter to Santa.

So if a car is on your holiday wish listwhether American-made or imported, retro orfuturistic, and you unwrap a small box with akey or have it wrapped in a big red bow nomatter a relic or brand new or how inexpen-sive or high a price tag, just remember theheart of the person that bestowed you withsuch a gift and cherish it always. The holi-days are a time to count your blessings andappreciate life with family and friends.

seconds. Occasionally around town, you hear theengine growl-moan like the four-banger it is, butthe rest of the time you never know it.We spent most of our week's seat time in an A5Cabriolet with the top down in the PacificNorthwest, plus more time in an S5 in theColorado mountains.

The manual wind deflector in the Cabriolet workswell. Girlfriend was able to take her hoody downon a September day, when the wind deflectorwent up. Carry it around in the trunk in its zip-pered bag, it doesn't take up that much space; orleave it home if you don't use it.In about 450 miles of freeway, around-town, and

backroads, our A5 Cabriolet with 8-speedTiptronic automatic averaged 23.8 miles per gal-lon. It got us 27 mpg with the cruise control set at73 mpg, over some long hills. The EPA rates it at25 mpg Combined city and highway.We took our A5 Cabriolet up and down fastwinding mountain roads, and it always gave uswhat we needed driving hard. The Tiptronic 8-speed transmission is as tight as an automaticgets. In a good set of curves you use 3rd gear alot, with frequent dips to 2nd and sometimeseven 1st, plus charges up to 4th. (Seventh and 8thgears are for freeway cruising, improving fuelmileage by lowering the rpm.) It took those shiftsperfectly, including aggressive downshifts thatsome transmissions reject.

With no paddle shifters, we used the unfortunate-ly fat shift lever that's also flawed. The gate formanual mode, sliding the lever forward and back,is on the far side, so your arm has to stretch. Theergonomics of the design aren't driver-oriented,and that seems unlike Audi. We asked Audi why,and they basically said: We know it sucks, thebest thing is to just spend the extra $750 and buythe Sport Package with available paddle shifters,sport seats and lowered sport suspension.The chassis and suspension stand out, like thesmoothness of the engine. Such a nice package,difficult to achieve, but Audi's been at it foryears. It's perfectly comfortable around town onpatchy pavement, while being totally capable onwinding roads. It's responsive and firm, pushed tothe reasonable limit. Quattro all-wheel drivehelps this sure-footedness. With quattro, 60 per-cent of the drive goes to the rear wheels and 40percent to the front (until a wheel starts slipping).That 60/40 rear/front is a good dynamic, achiev-ing both balance and grip. Quattro also locks thedifferential, for best low-speed traction.At the highest level, the available Drive Select

system with dynamic steering and variable damp-ing that calculates shock rates 1000 times/secondgives the widest spectrum of ride and handling.When you bring the 333-hp, 3.0-liter super-charged V6 into the Audi S5, you've got amachine. Audi is hammering the competitionwith good engines. Not that BMW's 315-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6, or Ford's 365-hp, 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 (and others) aren't exception-al.

The S5 is another animal altogether. The super-charged V6 is mated to a standard 6-speed manu-al transmission or available 7-speed S tronictwin-clutch transmission, which uses dual inputshafts and dual clutch packs to execute computer-controlled gear changes in just .2 seconds.The S5's supercharged V6 is fueled by directinjection and breathes through a two-stage intakemanifold. It's got big brakes, sticky 19-inch tires,and an optional active rear differential overdrivesthe outside rear tire in corners, forcing the frontend to turn in more quickly. It also communicateswith the vehicle's Drive Select system and stabili-ty control to help maintain control in emergencymaneuvers.

The A5/S5 was the first recent Audi in which thefront differential is mounted between the engineand the transmission, taking some weight off thefront wheels, and better balancing the weight. Butbecause the S5 weighs nearly 4000 pounds, it'sno Porsche. The ride is never punishing, butmodels with adjustable suspension offer a bitmore compliance over rough pavement.

The RS5 leaps from 354 to 450 horsepower for2013, using valve technology from Audi's 5.2-liter V10. With a strong new differential, it's stillall-wheel drive. It uses a paddle-shifting twin-clutch 7-speed transmission. Ironically, the flexi-ble 4.2-liter V8 used to make 450 horsepowerback in 2008 when it was the RS4. This power-plant has a special feeling, almost like a Japanesesport bike, but its sound is gloriously beefy.When it comes on the cam at more than 5000rpm you want to shout in excitement. It willaccelerate from 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds (noticethat's only .4 quicker than the S5 with the V6engine), and it’s to speed is 174 miles per hour,limited by electronics if not your courage and/orsanity.

WalkaroundThe Audi A5 is really a luscious machine. Itgrabs the attention subtly. Classy and elegant areaccurate words to describe the A5, never mindthat they sound like cliches because they're usedso much to describe other cars, including by us. Audi stylists got the shape right, from the profile.And they've done it all with fenders, wheelwells,rockers and shoulders. Who needs character lineswhen your shape has character? The new noseshows well in profile, artfully rounded as it rollsback to a gentle arc over the front wheels, thenstraight back to morph into shoulders that contin-ue rapidly rearward, dropping back down ever soslightly to the taillamps. The rockers start high

and slope upward toward the rear deck to suggestflying, or at least speed. At the tail, an area whereothers (namely BMW) lose their distinction, thatslight shoulder drop to the taillamps makes roomfor an arc at the lip of the deck that, along withthe badge of four linked rings, unmistakably saysAudi.The facelift on the 2013 A5 is a beautiful job. Itlooks like the whole face was buffed and roundedto perfection, like a stone sculpture, before theheadlamps, grille and vents were carved out. Thegrille has been rounded at the upper edges andnarrowed at the bottom, to make it more shapelythan bold, as it used to be. We think the grillelooks best in black, and not chrome, like on ourgorgeous white A5 Cabriolet. There's a slim airintake below the grille, whose top is the samewidth as the grille but it's wider at the bottom, soit looks like a platform for the grille. There arelarger faux air intakes at the bottom corners ofthe front fascia, that also look better without thechrome trim.The bi-xenon headlamps with available LED run-ning lights around their edges are artfully done.The crisp white LED lights run along the bottomsand outer edges of the headlamps, originators of ahigher standard for appearance and function.Adaptive headlights, on models so equipped,swivel to illuminate the road in corners by react-ing to steering wheel movement. And these areamong the best, as they precisely follow thewheel and don't jerk from side to side as somedo, better illuminating the road than making adistracting light show.The S5 shows more power, with a stance that'slower in front thanks to a sport suspension, moreaggressive air intakes on the front fascia, a blackgrille, a splitter below the front bumper, and fourtailpipes coming out of a rear diffuser at the rear.There are eight wheel designs, three standardwith the A5, S5 and RS5, and five optional. Thegraceful shape of the body doesn't quite make itto the wheels, but the good news is that the stan-dard A5 five-V-spoke wheel is quite nice, and thestandard RS5 wagon-wheel 10-spoke wheel is thehottest. But the other wheel designs try too hard,and don't appear compatible with the car.

SummaryThe Audi A5 is a rarity as an all-wheel-drive four-seat coupe or convertible. Its 2.0-liter turboengine is strong, its 8-speed transmission impec-cable, and ride and handling flawless for the mis-sion. The A5 is not inexpensive, but it's still lessthan Mercedes or BMW. The S5 ups the gameand is hard to beat in its class, with a satisfyingsupercharged V6 engine and available 7-speedtwin clutch transmission, with big brakes andfirmer suspension. For those who must have abeefy V8, there's the RS5, now with 450 horse-power. Nothing feels like the RS5.
