Schools add value toproduce top-class childrenA ground-breaking project is helping to ignite newways of learning and create a values-based approachto educating children in Lincolnshire.

Washingborough Foundation Primary and NurserySchool and Coleby Primary School have both notchedup the Values Education Quality Mark.

And other schools across the county are involved withthe Values-based education programme – aimed atequipping pupils with core values for life.

A Values-based school seeks to promote an educationalphilosophy based on valuing self, others and theenvironment through an ethical values vocabulary. The driving force behind the approach is former headteacher, chief education adviser and Local EducationAuthority officer, Dr Neil Hawkes.

Dr Hawkes said: “What appears to be missingsometimes is a shared ethical vocabulary, based onuniversal positive human values which can provide asense of direction and vision about how to nurture apositive sense of self, support the raising of academicstandards and foster a stable, moral society.”

Peace, Quality & Patience At Washingborough Foundation Primary pupils aretaught about the 22 core Values – which includehonesty, peace, quality, patience and respect - over a two year period.

Head teacher, Jason O’Rourke said Values educationcrosses all cultures and all religions and the aim is tomake the values principles a “first language” amongstpupils. He said: “Each value is introduced andexplained about in our Monday assemblies and then wetalk about our 22 core Values over a two-year period.“We think about how we can make our Values part ofour everyday lives. If you get the child right, theiracademic success follows on.”

Parents of children at Washingborough havecommented on the impact the Value-based approach ishaving, many commenting that there is a real positiveethos throughout the school.

Bridget Knight, trustee of the Values Education Trust, has no doubt that Values-based education is a clearwinner. “What sets values-based schools apart isunique and distinct: these schools have leaders whooperate deeply held principles of loving, enabling and engaging.

“This deeply practical approach offers a route to a more socially inclusive, engaging, motivating and rewarding school experience, helping all of us to open our minds and be alive to our own endlesspossibilities.”She added: “There is a growingrecognition that increasingly children will come toschool from families that are in a state of huge flux, if not in actual disarray, and that the influence onchildren outside school can have a huge anddetrimental bearing on their attitudes to learning.

Non-Cognitive Skills

“Research by the Nobel prize-winning economist,James Heckman, shows that non-cognitive skills are as important as technical skills in determiningemployability, earnings and career success. All thismakes it more vital than ever that our schools arehavens where individuals can come and truly flourish.”For further information, go to: www.values-education.com

Is it in the genes? Are daughters like theirmum and do they inheritmore than their mother’s genes or do they shapetheir own future? Whatever we think, we can’t dispute the fact that

from bone structure to blood type, hair colouring to

mannerisms, we will have some similarities to our

biological mothers. When our children are born,

parents look for similarities in their baby. Do they have

the same eye or hair colour, the same shaped face or

the same smile?

As they get older, we look for similarities in

personality, academic success and sporting interests

and many daughters find themselves turning into their

mum in later life.

One study found that families tend to have similar

facial expressions when they’re happy, angry, sad,

surprised or thinking hard. As one American professor

of human genetics said: “Many traits have a large

hereditary component but genetics isn’t destiny –

genes are just one influence on how children turn out.”

And to quote one American director of education:

“Most traits are actually determined by many genes

working together rather than one single gene.”

Teacher, Anna Fane, from Nettleham, has no doubt

that her eldest daughter, Rosie has many of her traits.

Just like her mum, a teacher at Nettleham Junior

School, 18-year-old Rosie looks set to follow in her

mum’s footsteps as a teacher.

And Rosie, who has expressed an interest in workingwith children with autism, could even be attending thesame teacher training college.

“She’s applied to go to York and Oxford Brookes, butOxford Brookes is her first choice and where I studied. It would be really great if she does go there.

“We do fall out occasionally, like all mother anddaughters, but on the whole we are very similar.”And it’s not just teaching where the two share similarinterests – it also extends to hobbies and interests.“Rosie sings like me,” says Anna, who sings with a bandon stage in her spare time and has performed at manyevents locally.

“She has grown up with parents who are both musicaland enjoy performing,” said Anna, who says thecouple’s other daughter, Becky (15) is more likehusband Greg, although there are aspects of both their personalities in both children.

Meanwhile Allison Faulkner, co-owner of the Stepping

Stones Pre-School in Nettleham, has seen her

gymnastic skills develop in her daughter Georgia.

At school, mum-of-two Allison, competed in school

competitions at Ancaster High School and made sure

daughter, Georgia, started lessons at an earlier age.

“I didn’t start until I was 12 whereas Georgia was

much younger and has benefitted from having

coaching from an earlier age.

“I loved gymnastics and Georgia does too,” said Allison

who finds herself driving Georgia to Lincoln Gymnastics

Club numerous times a week.

“She gets so much out of it, very much a social thing as

well,” said Allison, whose son, Alex (14) follows in his

father’s footsteps for his passion for cricket.

Breaking up is hard to do and when there’s childreninvolved, it’s even harder. Around 300,000 coupleswith children separate every year and sadly this is a statistic that’s set to carry on rising.

Stepfamilies, also known as blended families, are moreof the norm in 21st century Britain with 65 per cent ofremarriages including children from previousrelationships and while it’s obviously a sad experience,it’s possible to make it a very positive one.

Take one mum-of-two who lives in a village nearLincoln. Dawn had been married for 24 years when shedecided her marriage was not working out so she decided to call it a day.

“We’d just grown apart,” said Dawn, who has twochildren, one aged 12 and the other aged 15. “It was a difficult decision and one I thought about for a longtime but you do adjust and cope well. Divorce is morecommon than you think these days.” And as Dawn sorightly said: “You’re better off being separate andhappy than married and miserable. If you’re not happyas a couple, the children soon spot it. They pick upmore than you think.

“My two have adjusted so well and love their stepdad. They see their dad and get on with him really well aswell. Some people stay in a relationship for the wrongreasons. If it’s not working out then it’s a decision thathas to be made.” And while parents may see thecreation of a stepfamily as the beginning of somethingjoyful, the children may see it as a negative and a final

nail in the coffin for their parents ever getting back together. As Suzie Hayman from Parentline Plussaid: “It’s a function of a stepfamily that somethinghappened to ensure its creation – and that something is likely to be tragic. Stepfamilies are founded from a tragedy – someone has died or a relationship has died to make it happen.”

So how do parents make the blended family a positiveexperience? According to one guide to step-parenting,don’t make a blended family a replica of your firstfamily as this can often cause confusion, frustrationand disappointment. Instead, “embrace thedifferences” and be civil. If families can be civil witheach other rather than being unkind, it’s much morepositive as is respecting all relationships, not based on age but based on the fact you’re all family members now.

Give compassion for everyone’s development –everyone might be at different life stages and havedifferent needs and these must be addressed. Giveroom for growth as well – the blended family won’tcome one overnight – it takes time. Suzie Hayman, author of “Stepfamilies: Surviving and Thriving in aNew Family” says: “You can’t make your children likeyour new partner but the really important thing is toexplain that this new adult is not a substitute for oneof their parents – it’s someone extra. They are a step-parent, not substitute parents.”

Top Tips On Being a Step-Parent

It’s not easy, but Relate counsellor Paula Hall suggests:• No overt favoritism.• Be united – children need to know parents

support each other.• Be consistent.• Be patient.• Have household rules which apply to everyone.• Spend time with your kids on your own.• Don’t spoil a child – even if you feel guilty about

breaking up their family.

Storybook Days is an idea developed in April 2010by Sarah Hollamby and Leanne Taylor, residents ofNettleham, Lincoln. Both have over 11 years ofexperience in Education and Arts and have builton their idea of bringing children’s stories to lifethrough creative and practical workshops.

Each school holidays Storybook Days run full dayworkshops, based in their local village - themed onvarious popular children’s stories. Each day is carefullyplanned to include drama, storytelling music, dance, crafts and games and tailored to the age of children attending.

‘Our themed days allow the children to becomeimmersed in the stories and to enter the fictionalworld through fun and play – says Sarah ‘In this day andage, when stories and make-believe can sometimes belost to technology and television, our workshops allowspace for all primary age children to once again enjoy books.’

‘We have rid the village of the giants with the help of

the BFG’ says Leanne ‘made our own ‘purple hand

gang’ with Horrid Henry, floated our boats down the

Beck as we imagined what it would be like for Michael

the main character of Michael Morpurgo’s popular book

‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ and we even found out ‘Where

the Wild Things Are’ in Vickers Wood.

During the last two years – Storybook Days have

extended their work to include schools workshops,

children’s parties, festivals and libraries. ‘We have

been nominated by national organisation What’s On for

Little Ones for two awards, which we are really

excited about and are pleased that 2012 seems

to be turning into our busiest year ever!’

Top actor helpschildren to tracetheir rootsSchoolchildren in Lincolnshire are tracing their roots – thanks to Lincoln actor, ColinMcFarlane, best known for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and being the voice of ITV’s, The Cube.

Colin, who lives in Lincoln and London, was inspired tostart the Making History project by a story in a scriptentitled `The Land of Look Behind’ by Judy Hepburn, which he was directing two years ago. In it, a blackteenager is inspired to research his history afterstumbling on the story of little-known explorerMatthew Henson – the first man to reach the NorthPole in 1910, who was also black.

Colin, who has appeared in numerous TV showsincluding Holby City, found the story so fascinating hebegan searching for like-minded souls who shared hisvision to enable children to “have a sense of who theyare”, by discovering something inspiring in their pastthat empowers them to follow their dreams.

Pupils from Lincoln’s Monks Abbey Primary School andHartsholme Primary School, who took part in the pilot, have given the project the thumbs up.

“I have found out about where my family come from inthe Philippines and have shared it with my friends. It’sreally exciting,” said one youngster at Monks Abbey.Hartsholme Primary School Headteacher, Carl Jarvis, said: “An important part of the school’s ethos isempowerment. There is nothing more empowering forchildren than the Making History project.

“They are enthused from the very start and this onlyincreases as the addiction of finding more about theirfamily history kicks in. They have learned to interact

Now Making History, which has already undergone a six-month pilot project, is being rolled out to a further 500 – 600 pupils. Pupils from Lincoln’s MonksAbbey Primary School and Hartsholme Primary School, who took part in the pilot, have given the project thethumbs up. “I have found out about where my familycome from in the Philippines and have shared it withmy friends. It’s really exciting,” said one youngster at Monks Abbey.

PROJECT AIMS

Making Historywith adults and children alike and have become moreconfident and respectful individuals as a result.”The project involves a 12 week education programmeto take children through the steps of tracing theirfamily tree. It is designed to help pupils trace theirfamily as far back as possible using key genealogywebsites, particularly that of Making History’s principalsponsor, MyHeritage.com.

It also includes on-line tutorials from Dr Nick Barratt (ofBBC TV’s Who Do you Think You Are), an advisor to theproject. Some amazing stories have already emergedfrom the pilot with one pupil researching a probablefamily connection to Hitler’s brother, another finding alink to Dame Peggy Ashcroft; another to a Saint, and oneto an American silent movie star, Laura La Plante. *For more information and to see several video trailersof the project go to www.making-history.org, [email protected] or phone 01205 875134 Colin, who has appeared in numerous TV showsincluding Holby City, found the story so fascinating hebegan searching for like-minded souls who shared hisvision to enable children to “have a sense of who they are”.

He said: “Social cohesion begins with cross-culturalunderstanding and involvement. That journey begins inchildhood. The greater the awareness that can be laiddown in those formative years, the better the prospectof creating a truly integrated and happy society.”

• To challenge preconception and broaden horizons.

• Increase tolerance and understanding across cultural boundaries.

• Create within children a sense of who they are.

• Bring curriculum subjects such as geography, history, science and language alive through personal stories.

• Help children to develop skills in research, film-making and writing.

• Raise children’s aspirations through mentoring.

• Encourage children, parents and grandparents to work together.

• Share their stories with other regions of the country in order to break down cultural barriers.

Days OutThose of us who know Lincoln will be familiar with thegreat shopping, the increasing number of places to eatand drink and the wealth of history and heritage herein the city. Not to mention the visitor attractions, the packed events programme, the vibrant waterfront and the venues that attract well known bands, performers, comedians and more.

Visit Lincoln Partnership is working with businesses inthe city to raise the profile of the city throughcollectively promoting our assets. Many people fromoutside of the area don't know what Lincoln has to offer- so Visit Lincoln Partnership want to change this. Wewant Lincoln to be one of England's most visited historiccities. We want people to choose Lincoln as a place tovisit, live, work, some for meetings, study and invest.

To do this requires partnership working and acoordinated effort. Visit Lincoln Partnership haverecently introduced a new look and feel for the wayLincoln is presented in marketing. The creation of thisbrand is just one part of the work that the Visit LincolnPartnership is undertaking to ensure that awareness of Lincoln increases.

If we can attract more people to the city then we canhelp centre and support jobs and bring more money into the local economy.

This year you will see a new open top tour bus inLincoln. Offering an exciting way to see the city with a live guide on board - so for residents and visitors thiswill be a great way to learn more about the city. Lookout for the bus that will be operating tours from Easter until October.

The annual programme of events in the city just keepsgetting better from craft and artists markets to somebigger events such as the Waddington Air show and the Cathedral Flower Festival.

Lincoln Beam 2012LINCOLN BIG is powering-up for anothergreat Summer and once again the beam!Children’s Festival will have a starring role!

Plans are underway to make this year’s 8-day event– which will start on June 30 - even bigger andbetter. Last year more than 4,000 youngstersbetween the ages of four and 12 years old threwthemselves into entertaining shoppers byperforming songs, sketches and dances in Lincoln City Centre.

More than 30,000 residents and visitors took timeout to enjoy these performances and, while theywere in the city, the young pupils also attendedlive music events and workshops or a children’stheatre performance.

This year, Lincoln BIG – supported by Lincolnshire-based Festival Co-ordinator cultural solutions andevent sponsor Cool Milk at School – is pulling out allthe stops to deliver an even higher quality event.

Lincoln BIG events and promotions manager MichaelArmstrong said: “Children from 30 schools will betaking part and we know that excitement is already building as teachers begin to work with them onideas for their individual activities.

“There is still time for local businesses andorganisations to support the festival, so do get intouch with us for a chat,” he added. Culturalsolutions director David Lambert said: “Thefantastic programme of music, singing and dancingbeing produced by the school children, is being complemented by many other attractions.

“Shoppers and city centre visitors will findthemselves stopping in their tracks to marvel atamazing street theatre performers, who will beroaming the streets and surprising people withimpromptu performances. “Last year, all sorts ofamazing characters were spotted in the city centrefrom gnomes with wheelbarrows to a team oflifeguards and posties struggling to carry a giantparcel up the High Street.”

Co-Artistic Festival Director Leanne Taylor added:“This year, there will be even more fun becausethese groups will be out and about on bothSaturdays of the Festival, June 30 and July 7. Add to this the planned community procession and Lincoln will have an amazing week of festivities.”

David Lambert said that the beam! festival is ahugely important feature in Lincoln’s busy 2012events diary.

“The Festival aims to build strong, mutuallybeneficial partnerships that assist in gettingLincolnshire’s businesses and organisations’messages out to a very specific target group ofpeople,” he added.

Beam! organisers are thrilled that Lincoln businessCool Milk, which is the UK’s leading school milksupplier, has come on board as key sponsor of thisexciting event.

Cool Milk works in partnership with local councilsand early years groups to supply free and subsidisedschool milk to children in pre-schools, nurseriesand primary schools.
