Background of the Study

Page 5: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

Situation in Foreign Countries (USA)Throughout the history humans has been attracted to music. Whether

this music is part of religious cults or emotional release, music has been a center of our society. People have used music to express their sentiments and thoughts. They have used music also to tell stories about themselves, etc. However, most of the music genres today (heavy metal, rock, r & b, rap, death metal, pop, hip hop, k-pop, hardcore, etc.) and its music videos have often been associated to violent and deviant behaivior.

Modern songs like “Smack That” by Akon and “Hoes and Ladies” by T-Pain portray messages that women should be treated as personal belongings and are only needed to satisfy the sexual desire of men. Lady Gaga’s song “Bad Romance” contains bondage and grotesque sexual violence. Other modern songs such as “Club Can’t Handle Me” by Flo Rida promote binge drinking or excessive drinking.

Today’s music is common to youngsters. According to P.D. Christenson’s “It’s Not Only Rock and Roll: Modern Popular Music in the Live of Adolescents,” young teenagers in America spend about 4 to 5 hours a day listening to modern music and watching it music videos. In 1999, shootings happened inside the Columbine High School in Colorado, United States. In a study conducted regarding the incident, 66 percent of the students ranging from 13 to 17 years old believe that violence in today’s music is responsible to the shootings that occurred.

Page 6: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

Researchers today also claim that youngster’s violent behavior is the result of the contents of today’s music. Youngsters today often face violence, drugs, suicide, early pregnancy, etc. One of the musical genres that expose youngsters to sex, drug use, Satanism, and violence is the Gangsta Rap.

Another big concern of the sociological impact of modern music to youth is the contents of its music videos. Most of the music videos today contain violent contents. A good example of this is the music video of the song “Alejandro” by Lady Gaga. “Alejandro” is full of jackboots, bondage, and menace – culminating in a hideous gang rape of a nun type figure. In the music video of Flo Rida’s “Club Can’t Handle Me”, the shot of young men and women raising over ten champagne bottles in the air can be seen; then he raps about how he can’t stop now, more shots, let’s go. Miley Cyrus’ music video for “Wrecking Ball” is also a bad influence to youngsters. In September 18, 2013, after several naked vine videos imitating Miley Cyrus “Wrecking Ball Video”, the Grand Valley State University has take down the pendulum structure better known as the GV Wrecking Ball. The University has had a recent spike in drunken students riding the ball which led to its removal.

Crimes in the Philippines in 2014 possibly caused/influenced by the Violence in Modern Music Videos

Recently in the Philippines, the crime rate increased as high as 75%. Crimes involving rape increased especially in Bulacan and Pampanga. These rape incidents are possibly influenced by the violent contents of most of the music videos today. Last week, on August 14, 2014, a body of a dead woman was found somewhere in the rice farmlands in Calumpit, Bulacan. The victim was identified by the relatives as Anria Galang Espiritu, a 26 years old freelance model. She was believed to be gang-raped by three to four individuals. She was stabbed multiple times on the neck by a screw driver and four sets of semen were found in her organ. Another crime involving rape happened in Pampanga on August 19, 2014, just four days after the death of Anria. The victim was an 11 year old student and was found bloodied and dead in a grassy knoll in Candaba, Pampanga. The girl was found with a broken skull, possibly smashed in the rock by the killer/rapist.

1. 1990 study of Roberts and Henriksen in Northern California

In a case study conducted in northern California (Roberts and Henriksen, 1990), junior and senior high school students were asked what type of media they will choose if they were lost or stranded in a deserted island. The students were allowed to nominate first, second, and third choice from the following list: TV set, books, video games, computer, newspapers, VCR and videotapes, magazines, radio, and music recordings and the means to play them.

The table below shows that all grade levels preferred music media over television (which ranks the second overall), and this choice increased with age. Over 80 percent of the total sample nominated music as one of their first three choices. By eleventh grade, music was selected first by a margin of two to one.

Page 25: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

2. 2000 Case Study conducted by Gentile, Lynch, Linder, and Walsh in Minnesota

In a study conducted in public and private schools in Minnesota (Gentile, Lynch, Linder, & Walsh, in press, 2000), 600 eighth and ninth graders reported spending an average of almost 21 hours per week listening to music, compared to 25 hours per week watching television (Table 2).

Page 26: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

3. 1995 Case Study by Martin and his colleaguesAccording to the data of Martin and his colleagues (1995) from the 200

Australian high school students, those who preferred hard rock and heavy metal music genres reported feelings of depression and suicidal thoughts. 20 percent of the male and 60 percent of the female heavy metal / hardcore fans reportedly having “deliberately tried to kill themselves in the last six months” compared with only 8 percent and 14 percent of the pop music fans.4. 1999 study of Gentile and Walsh

In a national random sample of parents of 2 to 17 year olds, two-thirds (65 percent) of parents reported that their children at least occasionally watched music videos. Despite this statistical data, viewing music videos occupies little time compared to listening to its music.5. 1986 study of Greeson and Williams (Music Videos)

In a study conducted in 1986, seventh and tenth graders who viewed 30 minutes of music videos with high concentrations of sex and violence showed higher approval of premarital sex that did several participants who viewed 30 minutes of videos randomly taped on air.

CHAPTER THREERESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research methodology of the research study. This includes the data collection

process and the statistical measures used by the researcher.

Page 28: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

Data-Gathering Instruments Used

In gathering the needed information, a set of questionnaire for the respondents was prepared. Checklist, observation and interview with the respondents were prepared to supplement the data elicited from the questionnaire.

Questionnaire The main instrument used in this study for data gathering

Observation Self observation is another instrument that supports this research

study. Observing the Filipino teenagers (classmates, cousins, siblings, etc) can help in supporting the data obtained in the questionnaire method.

Page 29: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

Interview Interviews will be conducted on the parents of the Filipino teenagers

or respondents involved. Two to Four parents will be interviewed. The researchers will ask the parents on the differences of the Filipino Youth during their time and today in terms of their way of living/culture. Questions will be raised on their perception and opinion about the effects of modern music and its music videos not only to their children or Filipino Teenagers but also to the whole Filipino Society. The researchers will also ask suggestions on how they will come up with this current problem/issue.Interviews will also be conducted to the Filipino teenagers/youngsters (at least 2 respondents) to know their personal experience with regards to the research study.

Page 30: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

Statistical Treatment

The researcher gathered the data with 64 respondents. Using a questionnaire as a guide, the researcher observes the respondents in a particular group. The same process is given to the interview method.

The researcher then tallied the scores. The percentage is computed by dividing 100 % to the number of respondents which is 64 and then multiplying it to the tallied score (frequency).

Q: Why do you see the contents of the music videos today that way? (Based on the previous question)

Responses:lyrics are non sense!

Modern Music, unlike the music that we listen on Sundays, contains violent contents (such as sex, alcoholism, satanism) that is harmful especially to young children

Because it can make you understand the lyrics of the song and it can realate it to different situations

Music videos today are not good especially to young kids. To vulgar. Music videos today show sexual acts

They don't show gore or extremely explicit scenes

Lacks censorship

'Coz they can express their thoughts in it.

because the music videos i'm watching are good and they actually tell a story.

Well, music videos of today are becoming more aggressive. Sexy models, sexy dances, malicious lyrics. If you know what I mean. I don't even know how a lame song becomes a hit just because of adding malicious stuffs in it.

Page 44: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

The music video reflects our society today, full of criminals, rapists, etc. Most of the music videos today influence young children in a bad way (children/kids are easily influenced on what they saw and sometimes they try to imitate what he/she saw)

actually, it depends on what music you are listening. it can be positive if the music videos uplifts your feeling (fun, happy, etc). vice versa

okay lang

it is noisy . super loud.

Well, as long as you're an optimist, you'd see it yourself. Plus, being open-minded, i find things as a freedom of expression. And I like the hard work they put into such.

It is visually entertaining.

Page 45: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

Actually yung sa question na "How do you see the content of the "music video" you're watching?" ang sagot ko dun is depende.

Very vulgar kase although they express their thoughts on it

It depends on how you understand and appreciate the music

Either Worldly or Based on True to life experience showing the negativity of the reality of life that we see nowadays.

music video contents are positive because it sounds great and is nice to watch

It only projects real life scenarios.. (Which is happening nowadays)

Because most music videos have hidden meanings or don't have any sense at all

It actually depends on what the music is trying to convey, normally, I'd find the symbolism positive since it does so correctly with its theme.

Page 46: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

Sometimes it shows improper acts.

Some music videos give moral lessons, especially when the video has a story.

Page 47: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

It is sometimes not related to the lyrics of the song

I only listen to songs with meaningful lyrics, which the artist portrays very effectively in his music videos.

For me, some of the old music videos that I watched gives a positive views. I think during that time the mindset of the artist is to make it more positively because those time most of the people experienced the WW1 and 2

Because Miley has lost it!

Sometimes the contents of the music video are not appropriate.

It's simply because our generation is composed of irrational and liberal minds. Artist do whatever they want without considering the pros and cons which eventually led to unpleasant behaviors and actions of teenagers, even children nowadays.

Because of their clothes. Some music videos are not suitable for young age.

well it really depends on to the genre's you are listening.. hindi naman constant yung pinapakinggan mo.. pero you'll look the video in a positive way kaya ka nga nakikinig para maka receive ng good vibes

Page 48: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt
Page 49: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

If yes or no, why?

Responses:

i have my own choice

How the people dress on music videos does not match my personality, I just admire how they dress but I don't dress like them.

I'm in the right way of thinking and so, I know which actions are right and what things are wrong.

It makes me see the world through other people's eyes.

because its just a music video

kapag nakakadala yung kanta

You are influenced by watching or listening to it.

I know how to make a distinction between what I watch and if I. Sould imitate in real life

Page 50: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

It still depends on me if I want to act like what people in the video do. And most of the time, I don't, since I dislike copying other people.

Does not have impact on me.

why or how? they affects me on how i think. it also affects me on my behavior. the way i treat the PEOPLE AROUND ME! NOT BEING SELFISH!

Well, I share them the good vibes.

i can realate my situation/action to any songs ive heard

i know how to handle myself

Yes it do affects my actions in a POSITIVE way.

I think yes, somehow it affects my actions and the way i dressed.

Page 51: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

Music is a way to convey a thought to other people; the lyricist's opinion.

I don't let it corrupt my brain.

i don't base my actions to music

its just that i dont let this musics rule over me.

Sometimes I became aggressive to my parents

People can successfully improve their moods and boost their emotions based on the music they are listening.

i will not let myself to be affected coz i have my own principles in life that is far better than those

Coz it differs from reality.

I don't let them affect my actions towards other people

Your personality actually defines the kind of music you listen to. It's not the other way around.

Page 52: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

well you shouldn't base your actions from just a music video

I dont know

The answer is actually "maybe".

It sets my mood.

It boosts my self esteem

Music videos make me feel young and sexy

because part in our life we learned through our senses, that's why there is a probability that music can affect our actions because we use our senses. hahaha :)

I have my own Preferences, for example, the Bible

Page 53: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

CHAPTER FIVESUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

/ MORAL LESSONS

Page 54: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

Summary

Summing up together, the effects of modern music to the Filipino youth’s actions and mood depend on the sound or melody of the song rather than the lyrics. Based on the data results above, the respondents listen to modern music because the music “relaxes” them and the melody sounds good. Also, lyrics are not that powerful because some of the listeners do not understand its contents and if understood lyrics may be interpreted differently by different listeners. Music videos are direct and more powerful. Based on the data results above, watching music videos uplifts their spirit. It is also the performance that made the respondents watch. Also, a foreign study conducted (Chapter 2) shows that tenth graders who viewed 30 minutes of music videos have higher approval of premarital sex. As shown in the pie chart on Chapter 4, 39 percent of the respondents said that most of the music videos today are “Negative” while 58 percent said it is “Positive”.

Page 55: MODERN MUSIC AND ITS MUSIC VIDEOS.ppt

Conclusions and Recommendations

Based on the data analysis, the following recommendations are stated:

Not all music videos are bad. Parents should be responsible in advising their young children because children are easily influenced by negative things. Parental guidance is a must (like in the television). They should guide their children on which music video to watch and not. Parents (especially informal settlers) should teach their children of good morals in order for their children to become good citizen of the country (ika nga, “Ang Kabataan ay Dapat Pag-Asa ng Bayan” hindi “Ika-babagsak ng Bayan!)

Aside from parents, teachers should also orient their pupils about violent contents in most of the music videos today and its implication to the Filipino Society.
