ICO Partners Methodology All numbers are estimates, based on investigation of the following sources during H2 2013:
Financial data: annual reports (for public companies), European and international trade registers
Internet traffic data: Alexa, SEMRush
Game forums: Forum posting and members statistics
Social media: Facebook pages and Talking stats, Facebook ad tool, Twitter, Youtube
In-game player counts (for games displaying the information)
Third Party tools: XFire, Raptr ICO Partners has studied 26 games in total. Games that were not MOBAs running on PC or mobile were
excluded. Companies’ revenues are based on estimates for MOBA revenues in Europe (member countries
of the EU as well as Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Bosnia, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey).
T E R M I N O L O G Y
ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) The average revenue generated by an active user on average per month for a given title.
ARPPU (Average Revenue Per Paying User) The average revenue generated by a paying user on average per month for a given title.
MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena)
The acronym is currently used to describe a fairly large number of very different games. For the purpose of the research, we limited the scope of the investigation to the games that are sharing the battle mechanism of the original reference, the Warcraft 3 Mod Defense of the Ancient.
Number of players
Throughout the report we are providing estimates for the number of players of the MOBA games. The value we are using here is the peak monthly active users during the year 2013.
