Your Forage production curve impacts calving season

Nutrition needs of the cow go up as she approaches calving and go higher when nursing

At low latitudes body condition at calving determines fertility, calve after 45 days of good quality forage

Calving and Nutrition


After 4-6 months of age calves require very small amount of high quality milk

With highly lignified forage low protein limits forage intake

Rumen bacteria need 7-8 % protein to be efficient at digesting fiber when lignin is high in forages. Lignin limits over consumption of forages



Mature stockpiled forages are high in % Oxygen or soluble carbohydrates so we should supplement with a low Oxygen % protein source. Molasses is high in Oxygen%

All animals should have access so sometimes it makes sense to mix the supplement with mixing plain salt so they get their ration



Frequent moves increase intake and harvest efficiency, this makes for a better performance thanks to even plane of nutrition

Competition increases appetite, full cows get up an graze

Mineral program becomes very important as highly lignified forages are less digestible and mineral ratios become distorted

Simple system, 30-50 % of ranch is set aside

Electric fencing is 10-20 times less expensive than barbed wire but must be done correctly

Sufficient ground rods, high quality energizer, big capacity and good components

Polywire, fiberglass posts, no insulators, one wire fence works well with cattle - A savings per cow of $100 to $200 per year can be saved

When we make hay there is nutrient transfer, the mineral cycle is interrupted effectively mining minerals from our soils, soil organic matter is reduced

Making Hay


Check the fill of your animals ( left side triangle)

Are ribs showing ? shiny coats ? do they look healthy ?

Do not under or over feed protein

Sometimes is advisable to limit with mixing salt the supplemental protein

Evaluate your stockpiled forage around November 1 depending on environment

Calculate how many days of stockpile you have left and manage accordingly
