We are on the precipice of a revolution inmanufacturing.
![Page 3: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
1 design for many is becoming any designjust for you.
![Page 4: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
What you may have heard about 3Dprinting...
![Page 5: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
IT’S PANIC IN THE STREETS!
![Page 6: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
But here is a better story.
A story that shows not just what we can do,but what we can dream up.
![Page 7: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
This is Emma.
![Page 8: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Emma has arthrogryposis. At 2 years old Emma could not lift up her arms.
![Page 9: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Many kids like Emma use a device called the Wilmington RoboticExoskeleton (WREX). Its design reduces the force of gravity on thearms, similar to how the springs on a swing-arm lamp keep itsuspended in air.
The WREX worked for kids as young as 6.
![Page 10: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Emma is 2. They don’t make a WREX that can fit her properly.
![Page 11: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Tariq Rahman and Whitney Sample ofNemours’ pediatric engineering research labfound a way to shrink a WREX and make itmuch lighter: They 3D printed it in ABS plastic.
![Page 12: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
For a fraction of the cost of a normal WREX.
![Page 13: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
They were able to fit Emma’s WREXperfectly to her body.
![Page 14: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
If a part broke or she grew out of one, a newpiece could be generated in hours, and forjust a few dollars.
![Page 15: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Magic Arms let Emma color and paint forthe first time.
![Page 16: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Emma’s story not only illustrates the practicalapplication of the tool but the ability to makereal the creative visions of the people who use it.
![Page 17: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
It lowers the barriers of the physical design process.
![Page 18: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Manufacturing is on its way to becoming asfast and as fluid as the internet.
![Page 19: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Let’s quickly cover the basics.
![Page 20: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
3DP has been around since the 80s.It became a patented technology in 86.
![Page 21: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Stereolithography (SLA/DLP) uses resins and photopolymers thatreact to light sources such as UV. Where light exposes the resin ithardens and builds up layer by layer.
There a 3 main types of 3D printing.
![Page 22: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) uses lasers to fuse powderedmaterial together, again layer by layer.
There a 3 main types of 3D printing.
![Page 23: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is the most common and uses afilament that is melted and extruded onto a base plate. The meltedmaterial is built up layer by layer.
There a 3 main types of 3D printing.
![Page 24: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
For each type of printing there are specific types of printers. FDM machines like ours cover the largest ground in terms of price and application.
Printers
![Page 25: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Personal FDM printers are creating lots of buzz and are drivingawareness for the entire industry due to their low cost and rapidlygrowing user base.
Printers

As you may have guessed, 3DP runs off models built in 3Dapplications. Models get cleaned, sliced and sent to the printer.
Software
![Page 34: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
3D design isn’t as scary as it used to be. New online tools andbeginner friendly 3D sketching apps are making creation a whole lot easier.

After creating a 3D model we will bring it into a program to make sureit’s built in a way to ensure a quality print. This is called cleaning.
Software
![Page 40: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
After cleaning we “slice”it. This basically means we generate the codefor every layer that the printer needs to print. This slicing outputs G-code which can be read by the printer.

New technologies bring new challenges.
![Page 50: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
Still not easy to get great prints out of the box.
Challenges
![Page 51: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/51.jpg)
Prints are only as good as the models they come from.
Challenges
![Page 52: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/52.jpg)
Little to no standards are slowing the ability for the technology to spread.
Challenges
![Page 53: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/53.jpg)
Software still has a ways to go to become as user friendly as people are used to.
Challenges
![Page 54: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/54.jpg)
Failure rates are high.
Challenges
![Page 55: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/55.jpg)
Takes a long time to print.
Challenges
![Page 56: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/56.jpg)
High rez and colored prints are still pretty expensive to make.
Challenges
![Page 57: MMB 3D Printing Overview](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042606/541539747bef0a97578b8ede/html5/thumbnails/57.jpg)
Who owns what? Lots of intellectual property grey areas.
Challenges
