FLAAR Reports has attended RAPID conference and exposition for the past 5 years and every year we get to see new advances in 3d scanners, 3d software’s and 3d printing technologies this year the most impressive advances came from 3d printing technologies which is now becoming a big industry around the world. There is a lot of media hype and coverage on 3d printing also known as additive manufacturing, you can see it on televi-sion, newspapers and magazines they are calling it the new industrial revolution and a new way of manufacturing. There are big companies that are doing 3d industrial printing like ExOne, Voxeljet 3d Systems and Stratasys we will see them at this report and explain how they operate and the most important 3d printers. There is also a lot of hype on desktop 3d printers like the Cube and CubeX 3d printers from 3d Systems, the AFINIA 3d printer and the UP Mini 3d printer and Up Plus 3d printer from PP3DP with a price range of $1099 to $2000 Us dol-lars which makes them very accessible for mainstream market that we also are going to also cover at this report.

Also at RAPID 2013 we got attend the different keynotes and learned how 3d printing has advanced in the last year and where the future of 3d printing is going. One project that caught our attention was the kamermaker project by DUS Architects in Holland which is building the first 3d printed architecture canal house in the world. They are using the 3d printer kamermaker which means room maker to build full size architectural objects. You can check out their website to have a look at their work.

STRATASYS

As always this company is big name in 3d industrial printing their booth always full with attendees where they present their latest advances in 3d printing this year we got to see U printer a desktop 3d printer that two years ago was in partnership with HP and where planning to release with a HP brand, but we still can’t see that this proj-ect is going to take off. We at FLAAR Reports see this printer to expensive in comparison with the new desktop 3d printers that are in the market. They also presented their FORTUS 400mc aand the Object 260 3d industrial printers.

The big news on Stratasys came after the RAPID tradeshow on June 19 when they announced the acquisition of Makerbot a leading company on desktop 3d printers with a deal of US$402 Millions. Makerbot will continue to operate as a separated company from Stratasys as part of the deal. Stratasys is planning to compete with other companies that are on the market with accessible prices for 3d desktop printers and Makerbot will lead the way & Stratasys will focus on industrial 3d printing.

This fall Makerbot is planning to start selling a 3d system digitizer (3d scanner) so you can have all the manufac-turing process at hand it will be called the Makerbot digitizer. Let’s wait and see.

AFINIA

Another desktop 3d printer that is now on the market with an a accessible price is the Afinia 3d printer there are also selling on B&H and Amazon websites there are getting 3d printing in the mainstream market. They were present at the tradeshow with a nice booth where they showed us how their 3d printer works. The Afinia uses ABS plastic filament to do 3d printing, which is very inexpensive and comes in different colors you can have black, red, blue, yellow and green. It comes fully assemble with software ready to use that support Macintosh and Windows operating systems. One feature that caught our attention was that the Afinia 3d printer uses Flash memory, which allows you to send a STL file to the printer and then you can disconnect the printer, and let it print. 3d Systems booth at Rapid 2013, this company is ranking number 4 in Forbes Magazine must successfully Companies in 2013.

3D SYSTEMS

3d Systems booth was full at all times in the tradeshow they presented their desktop 3d printers Cube and CubeX a The Projet 460 plus a 3d industrial printer the GO Scan 3d scanner form Creaform, 3d software Geomagics and 3d modeling hardware Phantom Desktop use to be Senseble company now acquired by 3d systems we firstsaw this hardware at RAPID 2011 Minneapolis. 3d Systems booth had a lot of samples on 3d printed parts for medical, modeling, prototyping and dental applications. Here you can see the samples of their 3d printers.

As this report was written we learned that now you can buy their desktop 3d printers Cube and CubeX from B&H photo and video website one of the largest selling companies on video and photography equipment and also on Amazon the largest ecommerce site in the world.

PP3DP booth presented the Up mini and Up plus desktop 3d printers.

Presented the UP Mini 3d printer and the Up Plus 3d printer with a price of US$1099 and US$1799. These are desktop 3d printers that use ABS plastic and PLA plastic to do 3d printing. We spoke with the president of the company Brian Quan where he mentioned that we can get an Up mini 3d printer for evaluation and reviewing where are now waiting for his confirmation on getting the equipment for testing.

ENVISONTEC

Is a company with a range of 3d printers that use as core base technology selective light modulation this technol-ogy is being used in most DLP based Systems, The systems builds 3d objects from liquid resin using a projector. How it works: The DLP projector projects Voxel data into the liquid resin, which then causes the resin to cure from liquid to solid. This technology is very accurate and it has a large detail on the 3d printed parts one of the best in the show this is why they are big in the Hearing Aid industry where they hold 60% of the world market and 50% in the Jewelry market.

Their applications are dental, prototyping, jewelry molding and Hearing Aid.

Envisontec presented the only 3d Bioplotter at the show and we got the chance to talk with a sale representative where he explained the high accuracy of this systems and how they are working together with a Research Center in Germany. And are starting to build 3d printing biomaterials.

Exone had a big booth and always full of attendees at Rapid 2013. The sell 3d printers for Sand, metal and glass applications they can be for a small production run (individualize products) or for large production run (large quantity of parts, industrial 3d printing).

VOXELJET

This company specializes in 3d printing systems that are suitable for industrial applications and also provides a service center in Europe that creates molds, metal casting and plastic models. They have a wide range of 3d printers from small entry models to large format 3d printers.

The talk at Rapid 2013 was that this company has the first continuous 3d printing model which is another big step into the new industrial revolution. The model is VXC800 which has flatbed incline where the 3d printed models can be printed continually. And they also have VX 4000 Voxeljet this is the first large format 3d printer that FLAAR Reports has seen.

MCOR 3D PRINTER

A sensation during the show was the Mcor 3d printer the booth was full all the days of the show. This 3d printer it’s so impressive because it actually 3d prints on paper the kind of paper you buy at the grocery store. This 3d printer uses paper as it main material so it lowers the costs of 3d printing. In the process they actually use an Epson 2d printer with UV printheads to inject the color on the 3d prints then the 3d printer cuts the object with an install cutter and the printer injects a cured material to hold together the 3d printed object. This is a additive manufacturing process.
