This prestigious event has been the brainchild of community activist and tournament founder Wesley Frater. The tournament was started with the objectives of celebrating the ideologies of one of mankind’s greats in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., providing South Florida with an elite basketball event that will also serve as a safe, constructive and affordable family event to enjoy the best young basketball players in the USA. and to remind our young people of the need to cease the senseless violence that exist within our society. In its twenty years MLK has garnered a bevy of the nation’s top players Brandon Knight, Udonis Haslem, Keyon Dooling, Amare Stoudamire, Tim Hardaway Jr., and the list goes on. This year is no exception some of the top players in the nation will be on hand when Dewan Huell leads Miami Norland vs the 7 foot Zach Brown and the Miami Beach Hi Tides, UCLA Prince Ali, University of Florida’s prize recruit Keith Stone, and Wake Forest commit John Collins, just to name a few. It gives me great pleasure to welcome to you the 20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, JR “Stop the Violence” Basketball Classic.

We are especially pleased to be hosted on the beautiful Bayfront property of Ransom Everglades in Coconut Grove. The Village of Coconut Grove and CocoWalk invites you to shop, dine and enjoy the ambience. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the administrators of Ransom Everglades. We would like to thank RMF Magazine for the selection of teams that will perform on the ultimate basketball STAGE this weekend.

The Dr. Martin Luther King “Stop the Violence” Basketball Classic was started with the objectives of (1) celebrating the ideologies of one of mankind greats Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (2) providing South Florida with an elite basketball event that will also serve as a safe, constructive and affordable family event to enjoy the best young basketball players in the USA. (3) To remind our young people of the need to cease the senseless violence that exist within our society.

Now that we have reached the 20th Anniversary of the MLK Classic we can proudly look back at the accomplishments and the talents that have participated. Keyon Dooling, Tim James, Udonis Haslem, James Jones, Kwame Brown, Tim Hardaway, Jr, Amere Stoudmere, Steven Blake, Raja Bell to name a few. These men have all won the David Brousseau MVP award and the list will continue.

KEYON DOOLING BY: DAVE BROUSSEAU SUN-SENTINEL

“I WANT TO SUPPORT THIS EVENT. I WANT TO ENCOURAGE THE KIDS, SHARE MY EXPERIENCE, CHALLENGE THEM TO BE BETTER AND BE MORE COMMUNITY-ORIENTED.”

Before playing 13 seasons on seven teams in the NBA and even before his two stellar college seasons at Missouri, Keyon Dooling played his final two years of boys basketball at Dillard High. Dooling, 34, also played a big part in the early years of the Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball Classic. This year will be the 20th anniversary of the MLK Classic, presented by Tournament of Champions. Ransom Everglades in Miami will again host the event, which will feature 32 teams playing 18 games and running Friday, Saturday and Monday. For two seasons Dooling and his Dillard teammates played in the MLK and in 1998 faced the mighty Miami High Stingarees, which had won 56 consecutive games against Florida opponents entering the Classic. “It was a tricky time for boys basketball in South Florida,” Dooling told the Sun Sentinel. “We had a lot to prove for our sport. South Florida is finally getting respect.” Dillard hosted the game, but Miami High won. Dooling finished with 17 points, while teammate Clarence Gilbert had 18 points. It was probably the only MLK Classic game in which three future NBA players were on the court at the same time. Opposing Dooling were Miami High standouts Udonis Haslem, now with the Miami Heat, and Steve Blake, a journeyman guard now with the Portland Trailblazers. Dooling was originally drafted by the Orlando Magic, but was traded the L.A. Clippers in 2000. During his career he played in 728 games and averaged 7 points. Dooling played the Heat during the 2004-05 season. Since his retirement from the NBA, Dooling is driven to remain around the game of basketball.

“The lessons I’ve learned are applicable,” Dooling said. “I learned to work hard, give myself to the team and the lessons I learned translate into life. “I want to support this event. I want to encourage the kids, share my experience, challenge them to be better and be more community-oriented.” Dooling has since written the book “What’s Driving You?” about how he overcame being sexually abused as a child and turned his experiences and awareness into becoming a leader. Dooling returned to South Florida with his wife and four children after retiring from the NBA. He is expected to attend Dillard’s MLK Classic game on Saturday. Of the seven games on tap Saturday, three should draw interest with two weeks remaining in the regular season. They are St. Thomas Aquinas vs. Dwyer at 2:15 p.m., Cardinal Newman vs. McArthur at 5:45 and the nightcap between Class 3A defending state champion Sagemont vs. Dillard at 7:30. The eight games on Monday will conclude with the featured matchup between Miami Beach and Miami Norland at 9:30 p.m. It will showcase Norland’s 6-foot-10 junior forward Dewan Huell against the Hi-Tides’ 7-1 sophomore center Zachariah Broward. Palm Beach Lakes will be host a girls MLK Classic on Friday and Saturday. The eight games over the two days will feature American Heritage vs. Palm Beach Lakes on Friday at 7 p.m. The girls MLK Showcase at Hollywood Christian has 11 games on Friday and Saturday. It will conclude with nationally ranked Miami Country Day against Dillard on Saturday at 9:30 p.m

Q.           What does the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday and playing in a Tournament  named in his honor mean to you?A.            It’s time to celebrate what MLK did for us and an opportunity to play some basketball in a great atmosphere.Q.           Who is the one person you would like to meet most and why?A.            Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.   I would ask him about his sky hook. It was unstoppable.              Q.           How much help has Tevin Dailey provided as an athletic big playing beside you.A.            Tevin has been our biggest surprise. His rebounding and ability to make those elbow jumpers has been huge.Q.           Speak about volunteering at a homeless shelter for the first time before the season started and the impact it left on you.A.            It was fun helping all the poor people and the homeless.  It makes me look at life differently. Everything is not guaranteed. You always have to be thankful for what you have.Q.        What are you most thankful for?A.         I’m most thankful for my parents, Julia Nero and William Stone. They never gave up on me and motivated me to keep going.Q.        Although you have had some good moments this season, there is a consensus you’re saving your best for the Lions’ stretch run.A.         I expect to have a much better second half.  Coach wants me to be more assertive and I need to run the floor harder, and play as well as I can.

Q.        You’ve always added something new to your game. What is the one move you have incorporated into your repertoire this season.A.         I watch a lot of LaMarcus Aldridge.  I have worked on how he fakes going baseline and then shoots the turnaround jumper.Q.        What would the perfect end to your high school career look like?A.         It would be winning states and heading off early to Summer school at Florida and getting a  start on my degree.

Q.        Why do you credit basketball for changing your life around ?A.         I can’t imagine my life without basketball. I used to be a little bad boy. But since I started playing basketball everything has changed.Q.        After a major makeover from last year’s state championship team, how is Norland looking  just past the half way point?A.         We are not at our best but we will be there.  We are trying to get some chemistry.Q.        How would you rate your season so far?                                  A.         I have been playing better and better.  In my decision making.  I’m taking smarter shots.Q.        What’s it like to play under a no-nonsense, system first coach like Lawton Williams?A.         It’s fun.  As long as you are playing hard and playing good defense you don’t have a problem with him.

Q.        Coach Williams seems very intense on the sidelines. Does he have a humorous side?A.         Yes, he tells me I stink all the time. I just laugh it off.Q.        Do you feel with the heavy graduation like this is your team now?A.         Yes I do.  I want to be the guy in crunch time.Q.        Talk about your matchup with Miami Beach and its 7-0 center  Zach Brown at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Classic.A.         We should blow them out. They have Zach but are not very good beyond that.Q.        Pines Charter, an opponent you have knocked out of the playoffs the past two seasons, is considered by most to be the favorite coming out of your region. How do you feel about that.?   A.         Pines Charter will be an obstacle but we will find a way to win.

8 QUESTIONS WITH DEWAN HUELL

Norland will need a big second half from Huell, the 6-10, 215 pound holdover from the Vikings’ two of its past three consecutive state championships, if it has any shot at winning No. 4. Defense is Norland’s calling card but it will need Huell (17 ppg, 10 rpg, 5 rpg), who holds offers from North Carolina, Kansas, Louisville and Miami to carry the load offensively and make life for a new crop of unproven guards.

Javorie Wilson Head Coach at the storied Miami High

“It's always a great opportunity to be invited to play in this tournament. I think it's a great thing when some of the top teams come together and play against each other and give Miami a taste of what high school basketball is like. At the same, it's a great thing to come together and celebrate what Dr. King stood for.”

Q&A With Miami High Head Coach Javorie Wilson

By: JT Wilcox

Page 56: MLK special edition 2015

Miami High is one of the oldest and most storied programs in South Florida. Walking into the school's gymnasium – The Asylum – is like walking into a shrine to basketball greatness, with all the banners and trophies serving as a reminder of the basketball excellence that the Stingarees exemplified. Having won 18 state championships and laying to claim to having produced some of the best basketball players to ever call south Florida home, Miami High will always be thought of highly in the basketball lexicon.

However, as time has worn on and football has blitzed its way to the front of the south Florida sports landscape, Miami High – like basketball culture in the south as a whole – has had to fight to remain relevant. Leading the charge for the Stingarees now is alum Javorie Wilson.

Wilson, who was a part of three state championship teams during his time as a player at Miami High, is in his first year of leading the team and has it sitting atop district 14-8A with a 12-4 record. I had the opportunity to sit down with the Wilson and talk about a variety of topics; including his team, what he learned from his former coach Frank Martin and his excitement about participating in the upcoming TOC Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball Classic.

Q: Talk about your team's season so far.

A: I inherited a young team. A few guys moved around, but you see that at every level. We lost a few key pieces that way, but that happens. Right now we're 12-4. Our losses were to quality opponents. We lost to Champagnat, which is still undefeated. We lost to Archbishop McCarthy after losing a 12-point lead. We lost to [Orlando] Dr. Phillips. And we lost to Arlington Country Day, which is a national powerhouse. Overall, I think the season is going well. We're a young team, but the guys are working very hard.

Q: Sounds like you've played a tough schedule so far, would you say that it has helped you team?

A: Yes. Right now we're first in our district and we play Dr. Krop this week. And if we win that game we'd solidify ourselves as the No. 1 seed in our district going into the playoffs. I start three sophomores and have four freshman playing also. I'm no stranger to building a team. That's what I had to do in my years at Booker T. Washington – it's in my DNA.

Q: Who are some of the players that you've been relying on and have stepped up for you this season?

A: I have a very versatile player in Jerald Butler. He's a 6-foot-4, 215-pound wing. Although, he took over the role of point guard over the Christmas break. He can play all three spots. Then we have 6-foot-4 shooting guard Malcolm Nicholas Jr. He's similar to how Tim Hardaway Jr. was in high school.

Then we have Marlon Sierra. I'm always on Marlon because I think he could be the biggest mismatch in the county. He has guard skills and can take people off the dribble, but he can also post up guys that are 6-foot-5 and smaller because he's 6-foot-6, 230 pounds. After that, I have a bunch of young guys that have bought into my system. We're just playing as one.

Q: What's the strength of this Miami High team?

A: Our versatility. Sometimes Malcolm will have the hot hand and he'll get 20 points. Other nights JB – Jerald Butler – will have the big game. And as of late, Marlon has come on, putting up games of 18 and 23 and 20 and 21 against Palmetto. We're a versatile team and that's what's makes us a tough out. We just want to be the best team each night.

Q: You had the opportunity to play under Frank Martin while you were at Miami High and again in college, talk about that experience and some things you picked up from him as a coach.

A: Just his attention to detail and his willingness to explain and communicate with his players. He always let us know as players what and why we were doing the things that we were doing. He always told us that he wanted overachievers. He wanted players that truly loved the game of basketball and were students of the game. And that's something that I want from my teams. I want guys that really love the game and are overachievers. I want guys that are team-first guys.

Q: Is there something that coach Martin used to say to you or to the team back when you were playing that you find yourself saying or understanding better now that you're coaching?

A: Most definitely. He always said that hard work beats talent when that talent doesn't work hard. I mean, we were loaded at Miami High back in the mid-1990's. We had 11 division-I players. I played two years with Udonis Haslem and Steve Blake. We had Sylbrin Robinson. So everyday in practice was like a war. And coach Martin made it a very competitive environment. We knew that if you didn't go hard and really work in practice, that you weren't going to start in the game. I definitely have tried to use that competitiveness to my practices. He always told us that you're either getting better or you're getting worse.

Page 57: MLK special edition 2015

Q: Miami High is one of the teams that'll be playing in the 2015 TOC Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball Classic, one of the top basketball tournaments in the southeast, talk about what that does for your program.

A: It's always a great opportunity to be invited to play in this tournament. I think it's a great thing when some of the top teams come together and play against each other and give Miami a taste of what high school basketball is like. At the same, it's a great thing to come together and celebrate what Dr. King stood for. I really like that the tournament is diverse. There's public schools, private schools, schools from Dade and schools from Broward. So I think it truly honors Dr. King's desire of equality. We're using basketball as means to keep his message going.

Q: Now, you played in this tournament back in the day. Have you wrapped your mind around the fact that you played in this tourney, now you're coaching in it.

A: [Laughs] Yeah man, that's crazy. When I played in it, it was at Dillard. And I was talking with [TOC President] Wesley Frater and I was telling him that I couldn't find the film from that game. We played Dillard. They had Keyon Dillard and Clarence Gilbert – a great team. It was an awesome thing

because it was a packed house and both teams were going at it. It was fun to see all the people come out. It wasn't even all just fans from both teams – it was just basketball fans in general. And that's what I'd like see come back. Not just about coming to see a certain team, but bringing back that spark in the community where fans just want to come out on Friday and Saturday nights.

Q: That's interesting that you say that, because at one point basketball was king in south Florida. There was a point in time where the basketball ticket was the hottest in town and you were in the thick of that era. Can basketball ever get back to that point down here?

A:I think it starts with the coaches. When I was younger you had coaches like Ernie Bell, Irvin Baulkman and Shakey Rodriguez on to guys like Frank Martin. Those coaches demanded what they wanted and the kids responded. Their love for the game was contagious. Now, sometimes you see some of the kids and you wonder if they even watch basketball outside of when they aren’t playing. We have to really get that interest and love for the game of basketball back in the kids. They know what's going on social media and other things. Back when I was playing, we didn't really have all of that. Basketball was our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. We worked on perfecting our craft.

We just need to get that love back.

Q: Coach, what's the one thing that you want your team to get out of this season – regardless of where you guys finish?

A: I want them to get the message that it doesn't matter how you look on paper. At the end of the day if we knew who was going to win – why would we be playing? Nobody though that this team would be doing as well as we are. I want them to know that this season is an accomplishment. I want them to understand that we can accomplish more together than we can as individuals. Sometimes when you preach that message it can be lost on the kids. But I want to make sure that this season really shows that we can accomplish more as a cohesive team than we can as a bunch of individuals. And I think it brings upon a message that they can carry with them beyond high school – something they can use as men.

John Collins of Cardinal Newman By: Fabian Lyon

Cardinal Newman is off to its best start in history (14-1) behind 6-9 power forward, John Collins (20

ppg, 10 rpg), a Wake Forest signee. Collins, who has U.S. Virgin Islands roots, has patterned his career

after Tim Duncan, a Virgin Islands native and most famous Wake Forest basketball alum.

Q.        What does it mean for you to follow Tim Duncan, your favorite NBA player to Wake Forest? A.         Tim Duncan is the best power forward of all time. That is who I modeled my game after. The way he is fundamental, how he makes the game look easy. As well as how smart he plays. Q.        What part of Duncan’s game have you incorporated the most into yours and why? A.         His bank shot.  I’m getting 8-10 points a game off the bank shot.  It is easy money. Q.        What influence did Wake Forest coach Danny Manning, have on your decision to pick the Demon Deacons over hometown UM, Memphis,  K State and Maryland, among others? A.         Coach Manning played a big role.  Him being a legitimate former pro. He knows the ropes. He has been in my position. Q.        Cardinal Newman plays McArthur, a top Class 8A contender at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Classic. What do you expect going against players you

are familiar with from the AAU

travel circuit. A.         It will be a lot of bragging right. I know like 90 percent of their team.  It’s going to be a lot of fun.   Q.        What do you consider the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? A.         He died for the rights of equality. It means everything. Without him I wouldn’t be in the position I am right now. He holds a special place in my heart.  He fought for what he believed in. Q.        Talk about Cardinal Newman finally stepping out of the shadow of perennial Palm Beach state powers Dwyer and Palm Beach Lakes this season?

A.         Right now we are number one in Palm Beach for the first time. We are coming down to the MLK Classic to show its not only about Dwyer and Lakes. We’re coming down there on a mission. Q.        How did you develop from a freshman, under six feet to one of the most coveted power forwards in Florida? A.         I credit the coaching staff at Cardinal Newman. They helped me enormously in my skill development. I grew nine inches in four years.  My mom is about six feet and my dad is 6-5. Q.        You are also a qualified lifeguard that could envision a post-playing career in broadcast journalism such as ESPN’ First Take, your favorite sports show. Speak on that. A.         Stephen A. Smith is my guy. He keeps it real. Him and Skip are both crazy.  I’m looking to get into journalism and do something TV related. Broadcasting and interviewing .  People say  I’m well spoken and I have a great face.
