Student leaders from more than 60 Job Corps centers across the country organized MLK Jr. Day of Service activities during the week of Jan. 21. This effort was part of Job Corps’ Youth 2 Youth: Partners 4 Peace (or “Y2Y”), an ongoing, student-led initiative to promote peace. Y2Y Student Ambassadors identified organizations in their communities in need of support, and together with fellow Job Corps students, staff members, and community leaders, they volunteered at soup kitchens, neighborhood and park cleanups, homeless shelters, and other community service projects.

Center Activity Highlights

Across the country, Job Corps centers organized activities to honor the MLK Jr. Day of Service as part of Y2Y, an ongoing anti-violence initiative to promote peace in their communities. Students identified organizations in their areas in need of support. Together, the students, staff, and community members volunteered at soup kitchens, nursing homes, and various other locations.

REGION 1 – BOSTON

Cassadaga Job Corps Center: Cassadaga Job Corps students volunteered at a local soup kitchen serving meals to the homeless on the MLK Jr. Day of Service.

Edison Job Corps Center: The Youth Advocate Program welcomed Edison’s Y2Y Student Ambassadors to mentor their youth ages 14–18. The students shared stories and created poems inspired by Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of peace and love for all people.

Exeter Job Corps Center: Exeter Job Corps students volunteered their time providing bagged lunches to the homeless community through a community partnership with Crossroads Homeless Shelter of Rhode Island.

Iroquois Job Corps Center: Richard Ohlson, director of an Oakfield-based ministry called Ride to Recovery, was invited to speak to students on the importance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and why giving back to your community is so important.

Loring Job Corps Center: In honor of the MLK Jr. Day of Service, students and staff collected donations of paper products for the Homeless Services of Aroostook.

New Hampshire Job Corps Center: The Boys and Girls Club of Manchester welcomed several New Hampshire Job Corps students and staff on the MLK Jr. Day of Service. The Job Corps students interacted, played games, and shared stories with the children in the program.

New Haven Job Corps Center: Culinary Arts students from the New Haven Job Corps Center served lunch to the homeless at a local soup kitchen.

Oneonta Job Corps Center: Students at the Oneonta Job Corps Center in New York celebrated the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service by attending a celebration at the Center for Multicultural Experiences at State University of New York. They also volunteered at a local agency working with adults who have developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Ramey Job Corps Center: Ramey Job Corps Center volunteered to restore and clean up the historic zone of the “El Cerro Cabrera” in Aguadilla. Y2Y Student Ambassadors and staff members also helped paint houses with Samuel Gonzalez, an architect and designer of city murals.

South Bronx Job Corps Center: The students of South Bronx Job Corps volunteered at the New York Common Pantry assembling bags of food for the community.

Westover Job Corps Center: During an MLK Jr. Day concert, the Y2Y Student Ambassadors and staff advisors hosted an outreach booth to share information about Job Corps with the community. They also helped with setup and breakdown for the performances.

REGION 2 – PHILADELPHIA

Blue Ridge Job Corps Center: Students from the Blue Ridge Job Corps Center traveled to several locations to volunteer on the MLK Jr. Day of Service. Activities included cleaning and organizing at the Mount Pleasant Preservation Society Museum and attending the 32nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. March and Celebration in Abingdon, Va.

Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center: Students from the Carl D. Perkins center hosted a blood drive on campus for the American Red Cross, volunteered at the local Water to Wine Food Bank, helped with trail maintenance at a state park, and visited a preschool to read to children.

Harpers Ferry Job Corps Center: In honor of the MLK Jr. Day of Service, students from the Harpers Ferry Job Corps Center attended a tribute dinner at Shenandoah University, packed lunches for a local food kitchen, and welcomed a guest speaker from the I’m Just Me Movement, an organization that works with others to focus on self-acceptance, positive peer pressure, and overcoming obstacles.

Keystone Job Corps Center: Y2Y Student Ambassadors and staff volunteered for the St. Vincent De Paul Society at St. Francis of Assisi and the St. Joseph Pantry soup kitchens. They assisted in preparing meals, stocking shelves, cleaning, and distributing food to those in need. The center also had four Y2Y Student Ambassadors present their interpretations of Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech to the entire student body.

Muhlenberg Job Corps Center: The Y2Y Student Ambassadors and staff hosted an MLK Jr. event and volunteered at a local food kitchen. On center, they watched the movie “Selma,” played trivia games, decorated posters, and shared stories with one another.

Old Dominion Job Corps Center: Old Dominion Job Corps students volunteered at a local nursing home interacting and playing games with the residents in honor of the MLK Jr. Day of Service.

Pine Knot Job Corps Center: On the MLK Jr. Day of Service, Pine Knot Job Corps students attended the annual Dr. King tribute service in Knoxville, Ky. Later that week, students volunteered at the Signature Health Care of McCreary County Rehab and Wellness Center.

Center Activity Highlights

Pittsburgh Job Corps Center: The Pittsburgh Job Corps Center worked with a local church to provide meals to the homeless. They also worked with a local food pantry to distribute food and volunteered at the Hazelwood Recreation Center. On center, the students participated in artistic activities such as splatter painting on center and spoken word poetry.

Whitney M. Young Job Corps Center: In honor of MLK Jr.’s legacy, Whitney M. Young’s Y2Y Student Ambassadors and staff have joined their community to support Alex’s Law, which is an effort to increase accountability among the school administration and parents of bullies. The students at Whitney M. Young are focused on finding a solution for bullying and cultivating a safe environment for all children/students.

Woodstock Job Corps Center: In partnership with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Patapsco State Park Rangers, students from Woodstock Job Corps volunteered at a state park cleanup. On center, the Y2Y Student Ambassadors led a center cleanup, poetry event, mixer, talent show, and a field day.

REGION 3 – ATLANTA

Bamberg Job Corps Center: Y2Y Student Ambassadors at the Bamberg Job Corps Center volunteered at Rome Baptist Church and served food to the homeless in honor of the MLK Jr. Day of Service.

Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks Job Corps Center: Y2Y Student Ambassadors from Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks Job Corps Center volunteered at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. They were joined by the Memphis Police, the mayor of Memphis, and other community members. The students volunteered as greeters, monitors, and cleanup crews.

Brunswick Job Corps Center: The Brunswick Job Corps Center celebrated the MLK Jr. Day of Service at a local parade and held an on-center essay contest inspired by Dr. King’s values.

Finch–Henry Job Corps Center: In honor of the MLK Jr. Day of Service, Finch-Henry Job Corps students volunteered at the Panola County Food Pantry.

Gulfport Job Corps Center: The Y2Y Student Ambassadors from the Gulfport Job Corps Center attended a youth summit at the University of Southern Mississippi. Students and staff also attended a lecture by Dr. James Meredith, the first black man to enroll and attend the University of Mississippi. During the week, they were also able to enjoy the MLK Jr. Day parade.

Jacksonville Job Corps Center: The Jacksonville Job Corps Center hosted a breakfast in honor of the MLK Jr. Day of Service. Additionally, several students had the opportunity to volunteer with the Women of Color Cultural Foundation during the week.

Center Activity Highlights

Kittrell Job Corps Center: The Kittrell Job Corps Center joined civic groups, elected officials, community leaders, and local residents for a gathering to honor Dr. King and his legacy. They volunteered at the Act Six Soup Kitchen to serve food and visited residents at Kerr-Lake Nursing Home.

Miami Job Corps Center: Painting students volunteered their expertise to paint homes of elderly residents around the city of Miami.

Mississippi Job Corps Center: Students and staff from the Mississippi Job Corps Center presented an original play titled “The Grinch That Stole Freedom.” The Y2Y Student Ambassadors also attended the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Awards Banquet.

Montgomery Job Corps Center: The Montgomery Job Corps Center participated in a neighborhood cleanup in the area surrounding their center. A group of CNA students also went to a local nursing home, where they spent time with the patients.

Pinellas County Job Corps Center: The Pinellas County Job Corps Center partnered with Belle B, a local organization focused on motivating and supporting young women, on the MLK Jr. Day of Service. They volunteered their time during the organization’s workshop, Mental Health Bootcamp, to help lead activities. The center also volunteered with the All Kidney Patients Support Group at their Community Medical Mall event. Students worked with the project facilitator to complete health care screenings, organize games, and more for all of the community participants. To end the week, Pinellas County Job Corps hosted The Gentleman’s Course on center, a program designed to educate students about manners, speech, and human rights.

Schenck Job Corps Center: Students from Schenck Job Corps Center traveled to Brevard College for an MLK Jr. Day celebration that included a presentation of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, group discussions, and musical performances by a local jazz band.

Turner Job Corps Center: Y2Y Student Ambassadors and staff advisors from Turner Job Corps Center partnered with the Keep Albany Beautiful organization to help with a community cleanup. Also, the Turner Job Corps choir sang in the MLK Jr. Day program at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

REGION 4 – DALLAS

Albuquerque Job Corps Center: Students from Albuquerque Job Corps participated in First Choice Community Healthcare’s second annual “Building on the Dream” event in the South Valley of Albuquerque. Students picked up trash, removed weeds, and helped to build trails in the park.

Boxelder Job Corps Center: Students at the Boxelder Job Corps Center served lunch at a local homeless shelter on the MLK Jr. Day of Service.

Cass Job Corps Center: Students and staff at the Cass Job Corps Center participated in a roadside cleanup of Scenic Highway 23, also referred to as the “Pig Trail,” on the MLK Jr. Day of Service.

Gary Job Corps Center: Students from the Gary Job Corps Center walked with hundreds of local residents and elected officials in the San Marcos Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade. This is a tradition that students and staff at the Gary Job Corps Center have participated in for over 25 years.

Guthrie Job Corps Center: Students from Guthrie Job Corps and some security cadets participated in a local MLK Jr. Parade. Students also volunteered at Church of the Servant with Rise Against Hunger to prepare meals for the homeless.

Laredo Job Corps Center: To celebrate the MLK Jr. Day of Service, the Laredo Job Corps Center’s Y2Y Student Ambassadors visited a local day care center and spent the day with a group of senior citizens.

Little Rock Job Corps Center: For their MLK Jr. Day of Service project, the Little Rock Job Corps Center partnered with the Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Commission for “Mega King Fest,” a celebration commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. King at Philander Smith College. Little Rock Job Corps students volunteered to set up and work at food stations.

New Orleans Job Corps Center: At the New Orleans Job Corps Center, students celebrated the MLK Jr. Day of Service with a food drive. They also delivered gift baskets and refreshments to the residents at the Lafon Nursing Home. Students in the Carpentry and Electrical training areas worked on a Habitat for Humanity home.

Trapper Creek Job Corps Center: The Trapper Creek Job Corps Center served a banquet dinner at the Bitterroot Special Olympics.

Tulsa Creek Job Corps Center: The Tulsa Job Corps Center participated in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service by hosting a “paint your dream” project and serving hot chocolate and doughnuts to the community attending the local King Day parade.

Center Activity Highlights

Wind River Job Corps Center: Students from the Wind River Job Corps Center volunteered in multiple ways during the MLK Jr. Day of Service. They helped a local homeless shelter unload their food delivery truck and sort through clothing donations. They also deep-cleaned a downtown animal shelter and cleaned out the decorations shed for a nursing home. The center also participated in a Walk of Unity coordinated by Wyoming Indian High School.

REGION 5 – CHICAGO

Cleveland Job Corps Center: Students from the Cleveland Job Corps Center volunteered with the McGregor Nursing Home to bring residents to a King Day celebration. Later in the week, Y2Y Student Ambassadors volunteered at the Cleveland Foodbank, assembling packages to be distributed to the community.

Dayton Job Corps Center: Dayton Job Corps students attended a Unity breakfast honoring Dr. King’s legacy. They also hosted essay, poetry, and poster contests on center throughout the week.

Denison Job Corps Center: A group of students from the Denison Job Corps Center volunteered at the Denison Aquatic Center for the MLK Jr. Day of Service. The students helped to clean up, sort, and organize items at the center.

Detroit Job Corps Center: Students from Detroit Job Corps decorated an MLK Jr. Wall with their Dream cards to honor Dr. King. The students also participated in discussions about their dreams and what MLK Jr.’s legacy means to them.

Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center: Students from the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center volunteered at Northeast Middle School, where they helped paint murals and clean up the school’s facilities.

Center Activity Highlights

Flint Hills Job Corps Center: Flint Hills Job Corps hosted an event featuring several artistic exhibits, musical performances, and speeches on the impact that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had on the world. Students gathered to speak about Dr. King’s legacy and how they can continue to bring peaceful change to their communities.

Hubert H. Humphrey Job Corps Center: Hubert H. Humphrey Job Corps Y2Y Student Ambassadors volunteered with a local nonprofit organization called Twin Cities Catholic Charities. The students assisted with a large-scale cleaning project. They have already been asked to return and continue helping for future projects because of the outstanding job they did.

Paul Simon Chicago Job Corps Center: Students from the Paul Simon Chicago Job Corps Center volunteered at the Veteran Women’s Health & Wellness Center, where they interacted with the children of retired servicewomen. The students played games, organized arts and crafts activities, and watched educational films.

St. Louis Job Corps Center: St. Louis Job Corps held a student-led MLK Jr. program that included musical performances, poetry, dance, and video clips of Dr. King’s speeches.

REGION 6 – SAN FRANCISCO

Alaska Job Corps Center: Students from the Alaska Job Corps Center volunteered at a soup kitchen in downtown Anchorage, where they stocked and reorganized basic essentials and canned goods, and served food to over 150 homeless or disadvantaged people.

Centennial Job Corps Center: Students at the Centennial Job Corps Center partnered with the Salvation Army Family Homeless Shelter on the MLK Jr. Day of Service. They cleaned and organized donation closets and other common areas at the shelter.

Fort Simcoe Job Corps Center: On the MLK Jr. Day of Service, students from the Fort Simcoe Job Corps Center participated in an MLK Jr. peace walk.

Hawaii Job Corps Center: Students from the Hawaii Job Corps Center participated in an MLK Jr. Parade and a Unity Rally. Y2Y Student Ambassadors prepared a presentation about the civil rights movement.

Long Beach Job Corps Center: Student volunteers from the Long Beach Job Corps Center assembled meals at Meals on Wheels of Long Beach on the MLK Jr. Day of Service. They also wrote and distributed messages of inspiration on campus, and participated in the 31st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade.

Los Angeles Job Corps Center: The Los Angeles Job Corps Center celebrated the MLK Jr. Day of Service with a canned food drive and donated clothing and coloring books to Goodwill and Alexandria House, a transitional housing shelter for women and women with children.

Maui Job Corps Center: Students from the Maui Job Corps Center participated in a women’s march and volunteered at the Women Helping Women site and shelter cleanup. Students also helped serve food to homeless or disadvantaged patrons of the Hale Kau Kau soup kitchen.

San Jose Job Corps Center: The San Jose Job Corps Center visited a local nursing home and volunteered at a city forum.

Springdale/PIVOT Job Corps Center: Students from the Springdale Job Corps Center hosted a local community cleanup and volunteered at Mt. Hood Community College on the MLK Jr. Day of Service.
