Do you have faith in America’s future?

The second inauguration of President Barack Obama had thetheme “faith in America’s future,” which is something bothparties are working toward. The question is, do we have thatfaith? When President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said “Theonly thing we have to fear is fear itself,” America was in thethroes of a depression. And yet, what he said was not foolish.America did manage to pull itself up by pulling together.

How can we as individuals show our faith in America’sfuture?

We can spend time in prayer together in church or temple. We can help in the work of our religious organizations by giv-ing of our resources and of ourselves. Remember how formerPresident George H.W. Bush noticed from the air the “thou-sand points of light” across America that provide hope tothose who need it?

We can work together to bolster our schools because the nextgeneration is our future. Did you know over half the voters inthe last election were over 50? The next generation will beproviding for them in their old age.

We can patronize local businesses and volunteer for anddonate to social organizations. The national economy relies onsmall business. Our communities from the bridges to thebeaches have all been affected by superstorm Sandy. Manypeople are still living on their second floors or are not evenback in their homes yet. Helping our neighbors through theserough times is also helping ourselves.

We can support our troops through local veterans associations.Remember the United States of America is not run by

Washington. Washington is run by us.

NEW VETS DIRECTOR: Members of Merrick-Freeport Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1310 met atthe Nassau County Legislative Building in Mineola last week to lend support to fellow veteran JosephN. Pascarella as he stood before the Nassau County Legislature. Before the legislators was a res-olution to confirm the appointment of Mr. Pascarella to the office of director of the Nassau CountyVeterans Service Agency. The vote to confirm was unanimous and Mr. Pascarella is now the direc-tor. He is a 26-year combat veteran of the United States Marine Corps, as well as past county com-mander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. While serving as director his motto will be “VeteransServing Veterans.” From left, top row, are Oscar Sjoblom, Jr. vice-commander, VFW Post 1310; FrankColon, president, United Veterans Organization; Mr. Pascarella; Pat Yngstrom, past director, countyVeterans Service Agency; Post 1310 Senior Vice-Commander Vincent Mientus and Commander PaulZydor, along with their fellow veterans.

To Merrick Life:My name is Tim Dahlen. I grew up in

Merrick and I am a graduate ofCalhoun High School class of 1966 andwould like to engage your help in col-lecting pictures and remembrances ofthose who were lost in Vietnam somany years ago.

As I hope you are aware, there is aproject underway to construct theVietnam War Memorial in WashingtonD.C. near the Wall. One of the aims ofthe Memorial Committee is to not onlyidentify all those who fought inVietnam but, more importantly, to putfaces with the names inscribed at theWall.

Central High School District 7,which encompasses both the Merricksand the Bellmores, has 25 names col-lectively inscribed on the Wall. Ofthese names, there are only two withpictures, Sgt. Frederick John Burns,Calhoun; and SP4 Michael CarmelloMannina Bellmore, most likelyMepham.

There are 23 faceless warriors forwhom we must find pictures.Additionally, if anyone having pictureswould like to provide a remembrancethat, too, will be posted with the pic-ture.

I am sure that with the list we will beable to complete one more chapter in

our obligation to these fallen warriors. Please contact Timothy S. Dahlen,

Do not make hasty decisions with our funds

To Merrick Life:Dr. Dominick Palma, superintendent

of the Merrick School District was theinitial recipient of this letter:

The shooting in Sandy HookElementary was a horrific act that camein the wake of superstorm Sandy. Asparents, as a community, we arestressed. Unfortunately, people oftenact irrationally and irresponsibly whenunder extreme stress.

I implore you to delay implementa-tion of any plans to post guards in ourschools until the community has hadample time to voice its concerns.Furthermore, I beseech you to invitepublic debate on this subject.

Published minutes of the December

school board meetings make no men-tion of a community push for guards tobe placed in our schools. (http://mer-rick.k12.ny.us/documents.cfm?id=770.1762&master=42526&located=1 )

Word of a petition and a campaign forguards has slowly been circulating inMerrick. Most Merokians remainunaware of the pressures befalling theschool board members. Yet, I haveheard that the board is already workingto implement security plans. TheMerrick population must be allowed theopportunity to voice their opposition tosome proposals.

The purpose of public education is topool the community’s funds to educateour children in a safe manner. A vocalminority of Merokians are proclaimingthe need for guards in our schools.

guards in our schools does not worktowards any educational end. It shouldbe debated whether or not it does any-thing to enhance safety. There aremany arguments for how guards will doharm to our children.

Furthermore, we must agree whetherthe hiring of guards is germane to pub-lic education, and whether or not itscost should be shouldered by taxes orby some nongovermental organization(NGO) such as the PTA.

I have numerous reasons to opposeguards in our schools. However, thisletter is merely a plea. I implore you, stand in the way of any advancetowards irrational, knee-jerk reactionsto the horrible Newtown massacre. Please, permit no action until all ofMerrick learns of and has a chance tovoice their objections to the plans of anirrational minority.

Mitchell Barber

Dr. Palma responds: Over the last month, the Merrick

School District has received many com-munications from concerned residentsabout school safety and security. TheBoard of Education and I fully under-stand that there exists a range of view-points on the issue of school safety andthe specific aspect of the use of SecurityGuards at school.

The district administration has beenspeaking with a variety of companiesthat provide security evaluations, guards and security technology to deter-mine what the industry has to offer. Weare also in contact with other school dis-

tricts to understand how they haveenhanced security.

Please be sure that we will make ameasured and thoughtful response to theschool safety concerns. While theFebruary 5, Board of Education meetingagenda is not yet set, it is likely thatschool safety will be discussed. Thiswill afford the community the opportu-nity to voice their opinions and theBoard of Education to review adminis-trative recommendations.

Editor’s note: The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, which holds a security detail meeting atleast once a year to review its securitypolicies, plans to install closed-circuitTV cameras at several doors in thefuture to record who comes into thebuilding. The cameras will be moni-tored on a console from within theschool. The cost of the cameras will beapproximately $5,000, said a districtspokeswoman.

Meanwhile, in last week’s edition ofMerrick Life, North Merrick SchoolDistrict Superintendent David Feller wasquoted [on the matter of school securitywhile attending a seminar run by Nassaupolice] as saying that, as educators, “weneed to identify kids that are being bul-lied or are troubled so they don’t grow upto have grievances that are addressedthrough horrendous acts. That’s why it isso important to have mental health work-ers to help them.”

Mr. Feller said, “It’s imporant to cre-ate a climate where children are accept-ed for who they are. We must listen tothe kids and hear what they are saying.”

Nassau County broke groundrecently on a new state-of-the-artsports and recreation center inEisenhower Park that will also serveas home to at least two youth hockeyorganizations.

Ferraro Brothers Ice Center atTwin Rinks, to be built by privatefunds, is expected to create nearly 20new jobs and generate an estimated$35 million in economic benefit forthe local economy over the first fiveyears of operation.

County Executive Edward P.Mangano said at the groundbreakingthat “This new state-of-the-art sportsand recreation center is an excitingcomponent of the Hub that will cre-ate jobs, complement Nassau’ssports-entertainment tourism planand provide youth athletes access toworld class skating facilities.”

County Executive Mangano wasunable to persuade county residentslast year to vote yes on a referendumto keep the New York Islanders onLong Island by building a new sportsstadium. The vote cost the Island itssports team, he said, as ownerCharles Wang will move theIslanders to Brooklyn’s BarclayCenter as its new home base.

The county selected Twin Rinks atEisenhower, LLC, to construct the $15million privately financed facilityafter issuing a Request-for-Proposalsin June 2012. Twin Rinks atEisenhower, LLC comprises formerNational Hockey League players Chrisand Peter Ferraro of Ferraro BrothersHockey, as well as Joel Friedman ofClearview Capital Management, LLCand Ronald Friedman ofSilvermanAcampora, LLP.

Their consultant, Richard “BigDaddy” Salgado of Coastal Advisors, was also on hand for the groundbreaking of the facility.

Twin Rinks atEisenhower Park willinclude Ferraro BrothersIce Center, an 85,000-square-foot world-classfacility with two NHLregulation-sized rinks andone outdoor recreationalhockey rink that will hostskating lessons, youthplayer development pro-grams, tournaments, andhockey teams for all agesand skill levels.

The facility will alsoinclude one full-size turffield with soccer andlacrosse lines, a sportcourt with fourNBA/NCAA regulationbasketball courts, a hand-ball wall and a rollerbladeand stroller path connect-ing the complex with thepre-existing paths thatsurround the NassauCounty Aquatic Center.

“It is our passion tosupport Long Island families so thatthey will no longer have to be tornapart or have their family life dis-rupted just because a child excels inhockey and wants to try to make it tothe NHL,” said Chris Ferraro. “Thisfacility will enable us to create ahockey hot bed right here on LongIsland.”

Funded by Twin Rinks atEisenhower, LLC, the center will bethe home of at least two youth hock-ey organizations, the Long IslandGulls Amateur Hockey Associationand the New York Junior Bobcats. Itwill also play host to in-house figureskating programs, learn-to-skate pro-grams, a recreational youth hockeyleague and adult hockey leagues.

You don’t need to go far to find greatentertainment and activities. Check outthese opportunities, practically in yourbackyard!

The Philip L. Williams MemorialScholarship, sponsored by the Philip L.Williams Scholarship Fund, will be pre-sented by the Merrick Post 1282 of theAmerican Legion to a deserving highschool senior who best exemplifies thequalities of Commander Williams.

Mr. Williams’ core values werefocused on strong morals: patriotism, family values, community service and astrong work ethic, said his wife Sharon.

Mr. Williams was an inspirationbecause he took every opportunity toexhibit and incorporate these morals inhis life, she added. He made a differenceto his fellow veterans and co-workers,and to his family and friends by remind-ing all to integrate these values intoeveryday life.

The Williams family hopes to find asenior who is committed to these samevalues and has a determination for mak-ing a difference.

Donations for this fund can be madeout to American Legion Post 1282, ear-marked Philip L. Williams MemorialScholarship Fund, and sent to:

American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 1282

160 West Merrick RoadMerrick 11566

Attention: Sharon WilliamsAll high school seniors interested in

applying – and who need further detailson the $1,000 Philip L. WilliamsMemorial Scholarship in June – can senda request to plwmemorialscholar-

[email protected]. The deadline to applyfor this award in April 2.

“Thank you to all of the family andfriends who have been instrumental indeveloping this memorial,” Mrs.Williams concluded.

State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo Jr.(R-Merrick) is sponsoring legislationto raise penalties for drivers who leavethe scene of an accident that causesinjury or death.

Under current law, drivers who leavethe scene of accident and are caughtlater often face lesser penalties thanthey would if they were caught at thescene, especially if they were drivingunder the influence.

As an example, a driver who leavesthe scene of an accident that involvedserious physical injury faces a class “E”felony charge, which carries a penalty ofup to four years in jail.

However, had the driver stayed at thescene of the accident, he or she couldface a class “D” felony, which carries apenalty of up to seven years in jail. This

disparity encourages drivers to flee fromthe accident scene rather than stay andget help for their victims.

“There should be no legal benefitfor seriously injuring or killing some-one, fleeing the scene, and leavingthat victim helpless in the road,” thesenator said.

“Unfortunately, that happens undercurrent law right now. We need toremove the legal incentives that rewardpeople for leaving the scene of an acci-dent. That is exactly what this legisla-tion would do,” continued the senator, who is chairman of the Senate’sTransportation Committee.

The legislation (S2503), whichSenator Fuschillo is sponsoring withstate Senator Martin Golden, wouldraise the penalties for hit-and-run crimes

so they are commensurate with chargesfaced by a drunk-driver who causesphysical injury or death and remains atthe scene of the accident. This would help ensure that drivers donot receive a legal benefit for leaving thescene of an accident.

Under the legislation:• Drivers who leave the scene of a

fatal accident would face class “C”felony charges, punishable by up to 15years in prison.

• Drivers who leave the scene of anaccident that involved serious injurywould face class “D” felony charges, punishable by up to seven years inprison.

• Drivers who leave the scene of anaccident that involved property damagewould face class “E” felony charges

punishable by up to four years in prison.Several recent cases have been report-

ed of hit-and-run drivers receiving lightsentences for their crimes, most notablythe tragic hit-and-run death of ErikaHughes, a 24-year-old Mastic residentand mother of a 15-month-old girl.

Ms. Hughes was struck and killed onJuly 29, 2011, while walking along aMastic Beach road. The driver of the carfled the scene and was not arrested untilthe following April. The driver ultimate-ly pled guilty and received a sentence ofonly 1 1/3-to-4 years in prison.

The legislation was passed by theNew York State Senate in 2011 and2012, but the state Assembly did not acton the measure.
