Inherited from the Lancer Evolution, these features provide greater stability and driving comfortThe engine’s lightweight design and MIVEC technology delivers high power with fuel efficiency

● Lightweight aluminum engine parts boosts driving dynamics

Lightweight parts, including an aluminum die cast cylinder block and resin cylinder head cover, keep the weight of the engine down and enhance driving dynamics.

● MIVEC boosts power and fuel economyMIVEC, a continuous variable valve timing system, actuates the exhaust valves as well as intake valves, to stabilize combustion. It contributes to both superior power and fuel economy.

Newly Developed 3.0-liter MIVEC V6 24-valve Engine

2.4-liter MIVEC 16-valve Engine

Aluminum Roof and 4-wheel independent suspension

The aluminum roof panels (the highest parts on the vehicle) are about 5 kg lighter than steel roof panels. Lowering the center of balance reduced roll inertial moment.

The front MacPherson-strut and rear multi-link suspensions offer confident handling on city streets and country trails alike. The ample wheel travel and remarkable ground clearance allow Outlander to clear most obstacles, and the combination of all-wheel independence with a rigid body structure delivers luxury-class comfort and a smooth, stable ride.

Highly Rigid Body Leads to Superior Handling StabilityReinforcing the aluminum roof and adding other strategic reinforcements resulted in a very rigid body and raised handling stability.

● Reeling and rolling are kept low, so there is a reassuring sense of stability when driving. Minimal swaying also reduces the motion sickness that is inherently caused by vehicles with high overall heights.

● The vehicle delivers excellent straight-line stability in addition to cornering that faithfully tracks steering operation to enable a driving feel similar to that of driving a sedan.

Closed-cross-section roof bows boost the rigidity of the aluminum roof

Lower braces reinforce the underbody

Side braces reinforce the front sides

Strut tower bars increase the rigidity near the car’s front

Supple Suspension Stroke The stroke ensures excellent tire contact even on rough surfaces. Plus, it reduces shocks when going over bumps and protrusions.

Wide TreadThe wide tread enhances handling stability and cornering performance.

Lower center of gravity Suppressing roll adds to stability.

INVECS-II 6-speed A/T with Sports Mode Delivers Sporty Driving

With 6 speeds, INVECS-II A/T can adjust the gear and shift timing to perfectly reflect individual driving styles. As an added benefit, Sports Mode provides the sporty driving enjoyment of a manual.

Front and Rear Disc Brakes Deliver Superior Stopping PerformanceSixteen-inch ventilated disc front brakes and 16-inch drum-in-disc rear brakes deliver generous stopping power and braking stability and enhance the braking feel.

Sporty and Imposing, Large, 18-inch Tires and Aluminum Wheels225/55R18 tires and 18-inch, rigid, lightweight aluminum wheels are optional equipment (option). GLS comes equipped standard with 215/70R16 tires and aluminum wheels.

The Outlander’s 4WD system allows switching from the economical 2WD mode, to the sure-footed 4WD mode, to the road-mastering lock mode, with just a touch of the console selector dial.

Active Stability Control (ASC) Prevents Slipping and Control Loss

●Enhanced handling stability Onboard sensors compare the driver’s operations to the vehicle’s actual direction to instantly identify unstable movement, oversteer, understeer, and the like. The system will comprehensively control all four wheel brakes and govern engine output depending on the situation to stabilize the car.

●Traction control function A slipping wheel is braked and torque loss is prevented for smooth starts and sure acceleration if any of the sensors on the four wheels detect slippage.

*Pulling on the shift up lever for about more than two seconds returns the transmission to its automatic mode.

Superior Performance-2

In the case when one front wheel and one rear wheel are spinning

When oversteer is detected, ASC applies braking force to the outer wheels and additional power to the inner wheels.

If a front and rear wheel both slip, power is applied to the wheels with traction, maintaining control.

When understeer is detected ASC applies additional power to the outer wheels and braking force to the inner wheels.

2WD enables the quiet, smooth and economical performance of a normal FF car.

Torque is transferred to the rear wheels depending on surface and driving conditions. Driving in this position under normal circumstances enables stable performance even when buffeted by crosswinds on highways or when driving in the slippery conditions of inclement weather.

50% more torque is sent to the rear wheels than in 4WD Mode, allowing stable driving even on slippery snow-covered roads, rough roads, and steep hills.

Competitors Comparison Impressions, Q&A

What’s new about the newly developed MIVEC

aluminum engine?

A. First, the engine is lighter because the cylinder block is now made out of aluminum. The MIVEC system actuated only the intake valves on the Grandis and other models, however the MIVEC system is now made to also actuate the exhaust values. This enables ideal valve timings matched to the engine speed and load for even more power and better fuel economy.

● It responds the way I want. What I mean by that is that its power makes the vehicle seem light, throttle response is quick, and the acceleration is sharp and responsive. Indeed, whatever the gear position, whether low or high, the Outlander smooth and quickly accelerates in precise response to throttle operation.

Hiroshi Yokomichi, manager, main store of Hokkaido Motors

● The generous legroom offered by the rear seats and the firmness and heights of the seats are great! You can tell right away it’s a comfortable car. I’m positive friends and customers will rave about it if I were to seat them in the rear.

Hiroshi Toyoda, head manager, Okazaki Jo-kita store, Aichi Chuo Motors

● Truth be told, I knew that the main selling point of the SUV would be its excellent performance, but I really felt it in the test drive. The acceleration lets you directly feel the engine’s power. Furthermore, the acceleration is very smooth because of the CVT. It was gentle like that of a three-liter sedan.

Akira Igarashi, assistant sales department manager,

Okazaki Hikari-ga-oka store, Aichi Chuo Motors

● In this Outlander, the Lancer Evolution’s technology is nicely arranged. Its performance is exhilarating. It corners effortlessly. Its performance threshold is high, even with a taut driving style. I really felt it was a completely new kind of SUV.

Masayuki Hachiya, head manager, main Okayama store, Okayama Motors

● You can literally feel the attention to sound that is so good you have to wonder "did you have to go this far?" The high-end is clear and deep. You feel the heavy bass. I think it’ll add a new kind of amazement and excitement to the way cars are sold.

Tetsuya Inatomi, assistant store manager, main Tokyo Motors store

● It felt very nice-as though I was showering in sound. You can hear even fine sounds without raising the volume because the Outlander’s interior is quiet to begin with.

Yoshio Saotome, store manager, Oyama Yoshizawa store, Tochigi Motors

● The view from the driver’s seat is good. The front pillars aren’t distracting and the side mirrors are good because they provide good fields of vision. I think the side under mirror and sharp bonnet configuration, which help give you a good idea of the exact position of the front left, and 5.3-meter minimum turning radius will dispel any concerns about driving a big car with a 1,800 mm overall width.

Naoki Hattori, sales department manager, Oji store, Tokyo Motors

Q1. Why wasn’t an electric tailgate, like the one on the

Grandis or Colt, used?

A. The Outlander is an SUV, so we wanted to make sure the luggage room would be easy to use, hence the tailgate that splits open upward and downward. The upper gate is smaller as a result, so it’s also easier to open and close. Small items can be put aboard or taken off through just the upper gate.

Q2.

Does the drive mode selector (dial) allow switching

between modes, even when the car is moving?

A. It’s possible to change modes when driving, when stopped, or even when the engine isn’t running. The 4WD mode is recommended for normal driving conditions. Still, you can switch to the 2WD mode or the 4WD lock mode, at anytime to match surface conditions.

Q3.

The upper glove box comes with heating and cooling. At what temperature will it warm or

cool things? And, will it continue to heat or cool after the engine’s been turned off?

A. It only works when the air conditioner [climate control system] is on because it uses a draft from the air conditioner. The temperature it heats or cools at will vary depending on the weather, the temperature outside, and temperature setting. Still, it can keep things cooler (when cooling) or hotter (when heating) than the set temperature. The box also has a shut dial, so the box can be used like a normal compartment by cutting off the draft.

Q5.

The new Outlander has an aluminum roof. Can aroof

carrier be attached?

A. The roof sides are made of steel, so roof carriers can be attached if they’re the kind that attach to the sides of the roof. Carriers cannot be attached directly to the aluminum roof panel, so be sure to check what kind of carrier you’re buying.
