Pembrokeshire College’s Marine Centre (MITEC), provides a range of courses from beginner to degree level - covering the design and building of marine craft, marine engineering and crewing or skippering boats. Practical boatbuilding skills using wood, steel and modern composites are complemented by advanced computerised design skills at MITEC Marine Technology Centre.

Location MITEC is located on the quayside in Milford Haven. The Milford Haven waterway is world renowned for its deep sheltered waters and this makes the area popular for both commercial and pleasure vessels. Pembrokeshire is home to two leading boat manufacturers (Dale Nelson and Mustang Marine / Ocean Dynamics), as well as many ancillary industries such as repair yards, a sail loft, a dry-dock, two large marinas and various specialised marine engineering companies. Milford Haven is easily reached by road, rail or sea and MITEC is just 200 metres from the railway station.

Facilities MITEC was purpose-built in 2000 as part of the re-development of the docks area. MITEC now forms an integral part of the Marina and Docks. MITEC wood, metal, engineering and FRP / composite workshops contain an extensive range of boatbuilding and marine engineering equipment supported by state-of-the-art computer and classroom facilities.

Boatbuilding and Marine Engineering Full-time courses

All programmes are run from the MITEC centre, making full use of the latest machinery and computer software. We hope that we can offer a course that appeals to you; we are confident that our knowledge and enthusiastic staff will be able to guide you through your studies. During the latest HMI inspection by Estyn, favourable comments were made about our interactive group teaching strategies; high levels of machining, hand-skills experience; and effective and innovative curriculum development.

Pembrokeshire College is an approved RYA, City & Guilds, Edexel and University of Glamorgan accredited centre. Assessment procedures followed will depend upon which course you join.

CITY & GUILDS 2451 - Boat Building The ‘industry standard’ boatbuilding course. Areas covered include lofting, construction in wood and FRP, boat joinery and fitting out, woodwork machinery, sail plans and machinery installations. Students can also study key skills (information technology, application of number and communications) as part of this course. The City & Guilds boatbuilding qualification is recognised by all marine employers and many of our students have secured exciting and interesting jobs both locally and overseas. Course duration: two years.

CITY & GUILDS 2451 - Marine Engineering

There is a growing shortage of qualified marine engineers, both in the boatyard and boatbuilding sectors. This course provides an excellent foundation to the exciting and rapidly developing field of marine engineering. Learn everything from the routine servicing of marine engines and propulsion systems to diagnostics and fault finding, engineering bench work (metalwork) and welding. Students can also study key skills (information technology, application of number and communications) as part of this course. Course duration: two years.

BTEC National Diploma in Marine Engineering

If you want to pursue a career in a professional or technical field, National Diplomas are a practical alternative route to AS and A Levels at level 3. With this course you will discover the science and theory behind yachts, ships and their equipment. Students may then go on to study further and enter the Merchant or Royal Navy as engineers or deck officers (subject to qualifications) or go to university to follow a degree course.Course duration: two years.

Part-time courses

Maritime and Coastguard (MCA) Approved Engine Course 4 days450

This stimulating and highly valued course is run over four days. The qualification is a requirement for the manning of small commercial power and sailing vessels that operate more than 20 miles from a safe haven (for specific manning details and requirements please consult MGN280). The course covers all aspects of the mechanical and electrical operation of small craft, including diesel engines, propulsors, electrical systems, hydraulics, fire prevention and pollution legislation.

City & Guilds 4353 - Two Dimensional Computer Aided Design

The course is designed to take the student from the initial concept of computerised drawing in two dimensions (2D) to more complex detailed drawings using many of the higher level functions of AutoCAD. This will enable students to produce detailed computer generated drawings of a professional standard. Many previous students have used the qualification to enhance their employment skills.

City & Guilds 4353 - Three Dimensional Computer Aided Design

The course is designed to take the student from the initial concept of computerised modelling in two dimensions to more complex three dimensional modelling using many of the higher level functions of AutoCAD. This will enable students to produce high quality computer generated 3D models.

OCN - Boat Repair and Outboard Engine Maintenance

The primary objective of this course is to teach individuals the basic skills behind wood and GRP boat repairs and outboard engine maintenance. The course will equip individuals with the skills and knowledge to carry out some routine maintenance and repairs for themselves. The course assumes no prior knowledge and is taught in a very relaxed and enjoyable way.

OCN - Woodwork/Furniture Making

The course starts by fine tuning hand skills and an introduction to construction techniques used in box and carcass work. Students will learn how to use power tools and other machinery before progressing onto designing/drawing.

RYA - Day Skipper Theory 5 Days £225

This is an introductory course suitable for anyone interested in skippering a motor boat or yacht, or who has a general interest in navigation and the sea. The course covers basic seamanship, traditional and electronic chart work, navigation and an introduction to meteorology. It aims to give would-be skippers enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day.

RYA - Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore Theory 6 Days £225

An advanced navigation and theory course, ideal for preparing candidates for the chart work and COLREGS aspect of the Coastal Skipper Course or the Boatmaster and Yachtmaster Examinations. The course covers more advanced techniques in offshore and coastal navigation by day and night, as well as pilotage and meteorology. A very thorough and rewarding navigation course.

RYA - Yachtmaster Ocean Theory 6 Days £245

There is nothing more satisfying than finding your location in the world using simply a sextant and a chronometer. While we all recognise the convenience and practicality of using GPS on board a modern vessel, the knowledge and skill of navigating by celestial bodies is still a requirement for both merchant seamen and the RYA’s most prestigious certificate - the Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate. This course covers worldwide weather systems, route planning and preparation, as well as celestial navigation.

RYA - Short Range Certificate (SRC) VHF Radio Operator’s Licence 1 Day £85

The SRC is an intensive one-day course with a short exam at the end of the day. It prepares sailors for VHF communications in the DSC and GMDSS era and gives an introduction to all the components of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.

RYA - Diesel Engine Maintenance 1 Day £90

The diesel engine maintenance course is one of the RYA’s specialist one-day courses. It aims to equip sailors and motorboaters with a basic knowledge of the routine maintenance requirements for inboard diesel engines. After the course you will have the confidence to carry out your own routine maintenance and trouble-shoot common problems such as failure to start, over-heating etc.

The Dunbrody is a 458 tonne three-masted barque, 176ft (53.7 metres) long. Her hull length is 120ft, she has a beam of 28ft, a draft of 11.5ft and has a small sail area of 10,100 square feet. The present ship is a reconstruction of the original Dunbrody, built in Quebec in 1845 by Thomas Hamilton Oliver. The Dunbrody was primariliy a cargo vessel and carried timber from Canada, cotton from the southern states of the US and guano from Peru. She usually carried 176 people but on one crossing, at the height of the Famine in 1847, she carried 313.

Students from all over the UK come to beautiful Pembrokeshire to study boat building courses at MITEC. On completion of their course, past students have progressed their studies at a higher level, found employment locally or relocated to warmer climates to find interesting, relevant jobs. The following students of MITEC, Pembrokeshire College did just that!

Ben Willimas, BoatbuilderBen completed his City & Guilds course in 2003 and achieved distinctions in all modules. He was quickly employed by a local boat owner to assist with the restoration of a magnificent wooden 50ft Edwardian yacht. Wishing to spread his wings, Ben flew to New Zealand where he teamed up with another ex-MITEC student Kieran Latham. Kieran found work in Marlborough Sounds fitting out a motoryacht and Ben was offered work in several boatyards in Wellington. Ben eventually joined the boatbuilding team that built the 98ft, high-tech racing yacht Zana. Later Ben moved to Spain, Dubai and then France, doing what he loves ... boatbuilding.

“The course is one of the best things I’ve done, it opened many doors all over the world and the skills I learned are so wide that I can find employment in the marine and construction industries, even as a furniture maker,” enthused Ben.

Nigel Dixon, Engineer“I have just been hired as an engineer and I am waiting for the boat to be shipped from New Zealand. It will arrive in Palma, Mallorca in March. Can’t wait! We have a very busy itinerary planned: three days after the boat arrives we are heading to Malta, then to Croatia and then a couple of months in Valencia, followed by St Tropez. All thanks to skills I developed at MITEC.”

Alistair Trimmer, Design EngineerIn June 2007, Alistair joined Advanced Composites Group who are market leaders in pre-preg manufacture, providing material to a dazzling array of customers in Formula 1, America’s Cup, Volvo Ocean Race and Olympic cycling. The job involves managing a great variety of projects from a range of industries including aerospace, motor sports and marine.

“It was the environment at MITEC that allowed me to flourish and grow in confidence. The mix of theory and practical sessions gave me the knowledge to understand what was happening as well as the space to make mistakes and learn from them.”

Stuart Ireland, BoatbuilderStuart completed the City & Guilds Boatbuilding course at MITEC in June 2006, after which he moved to Italy to join Wally Yachts in Fano. To date, he has worked on the hull construction and the moulding of a wide range of luxury motoryachts and sailboats.

Our campus is a stones throw away from the UK’s only Coastal National Park; our back yard is considered one of the most beautiful in the country. We have been delivering quality degree programmes accredited by the University of Glamorgan since 1998. During your time with us you will be a student of the university and have access not only to the college facilities but also the university’s on-line library and learning facilities. We deliver degree programmes in the areas of Coastal Management, Engineering, Design, Architecture, Business, Computing, Animal Studies and Complementary Therapies.

Specialist course:BSc Coastal Zone and Marine Enviroment Studies

Course content:This three year degree programme develops skills that are ideal for those interested in employment within the environment section of commercial organisations, national parks, local authorities, environment agencies and coastal conservation organisations.

The superb natural laboratory of the Coastal National Park, and in particular the Marine Nature Reserve of Skomer Island, is fully exploited in the practical nature of the teaching, with 25 percent of the course being spent outside on field trips. Our students have been involved on exchange programmes to the Netherlands and Ireland. It’s not all work, typically students take advantage of the fantastic marine activities available in Pembrokeshire, such as diving,surfing, sailing and rock climbing.
