GATE Information 2018-2019

Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) provides support

for gifted and talented (GATE) students through

differentiated instruction. We believe that differentiated

instruction not only serves the needs of our exceptional

students, but also enhances the entire educational program

for all students.

All 3rd grade students will have the opportunity to be

tested for GATE. The process is automatic and does not

require parents to initiate it. Any student whose parent

does not want their child to participate in testing must

submit a written request to the Assessment and

Accountability Department, 4210 Technology Drive,

Room 280, Fremont, California 94538, no later than

January 15, 2019. The request may be in the form of

email, letter, or the optional form available in the district

office. Requests submitted after the deadline will not be

accepted.

GATE testing for 3rd grade students will occur between

February 4 – February 15, 2019.

Students in 4th or 5th grade who have not taken the GATE

assessment at FUSD have the option to take the GATE

assessment. These might be students who are new to the

district or who were opted out of GATE testing in 3rd

grade. If your 4th or 5th grade child is eligible for GATE

testing this year and you would like them to be assessed,

please submit a written request to the Assessment and

Accountability Department by January 15, 2019. Fifth

grade is the last opportunity for students to be assessed

with the GATE test. 4th and 5th grade students will be

tested between February 19 - March 15, 2019.

Students in 5th or 6th grade who were not identified in an

earlier grade may be considered for GATE identification

through the professional judgement process. Teachers

and/or parents may nominate students. A completed

Nomination Form must be submitted to the Curriculum

and Instruction Department, 4210 Technology Drive,

Room 260, Fremont, California 94538 between November

1, 2018 and January 15, 2019. Additional information and

forms are available in the student’s school office and may

also be downloaded from the Curriculum and Instruction

Department website.

4th – 6th Grades Office for Civil Rights Survey

Your student is being asked to participate in a school

climate survey developed by the Office for Civil Rights in

collaboration with the Fremont Unified School District

(FUSD). The survey will be provided to students to assist

District staff in understanding our students' experiences

and to ensure that our students' feel that school is a safe

space for them. The survey will be administered during

the school day between December 10th and December

21st and will take approximately 15 minutes to

complete. The survey is strictly voluntary and

anonymous. All responses are confidential and will not be

shared with any other students or staff. Students who

participate in the survey do not have to answer any

questions they do not want to answer, and may stop the

survey at any time. Thank you in advance for your

assistance and support in making Fremont Unified School

District a safe place for our students. A copy of the survey

can be viewed in the school office.

The Fremont Education Foundation is assisting in Camp Fire relief efforts. Monetary donations may be made to

help affected families of FUSD’s staff and to help Butte County schools and classrooms

that were affected by the Camp Fire. 100% of all donations will go directly to those in need.

Math Test for 7th Grade Placement FAQ When will the Math Test for 7th Grade Placement (formerly referred to as the 6th grade math placement test) be administered? The testing window for 6th graders to take the math test for 7th grade placement is April 8-17th. Elementary school sites will coordinate their testing schedule based on other factors (SBAC testing, etc.) and choose one or two days to administer the test. Will the Math Placement Test cover material that has not yet been taught? The math placement test will cover only standards taught through unit 4 of the instructional guide. The majority of teachers will finish unit 4 well before the testing window. Standards addressed on the math placement test include ratios and proportions (6.RP), the number system (6.NS), and expressions and equations (6.EE). 6th Grade Math Standards Overview What criteria will be used to determine placement into junior high math pathways?

● Placement test results - part 1 and 2 ● 5th grade SBAC results ● 6th grade mid-year district benchmark results ● 6th grade SBAC results

(Note: 6th grade math grades are not included in the criteria.) All of this data will be compiled and analyzed to place students in the appropriate 7th grade math course. Student data and feedback from junior high math teachers indicates that the criteria used over the last four years has been a reliable predictor of student success and proper placement. When will parents be notified of their student’s math placement? Placement letters will be sent out mid-July. Placement decisions are made by considering multiple measures including the 6th grade math SBAC score. This score is not available until June or July and therefore means that accurate placement cannot be completed until that time. What if a student is sick or otherwise misses the placement test when it is administered at his/her site? Students who miss the placement test when it is administered will take a make-up test as soon as they return to school. Newly enrolling students will take the placement test in late August. Will there be another opportunity for students to move to the accelerated pathway? There will be another opportunity for students in the non-accelerated pathway to accelerate at the beginning of their 10th grade year. If funding is available for Summer Bridge, students who are excelling in their 7th grade Common Core 2 (CC2) class and who also successfully complete Summer Bridge may also have an opportunity to move to accelerated in 8th grade. What is the Summer Bridge class and for what grade level does it apply? The Summer Bridge class is for 7th grade students only. Students who have excelled in the 7th grade CC2 course including earning A’s at both semesters, earning 90% or better on all district benchmarks and in class assessments may be recommended for the Summer Bridge Class. During this class, 8th grade Geometry and Foundational Algebra (GFA) content will be taught. Students who earn a B- or better in

the Summer Bridge and who earn at least 80% on all assessments and benchmarks will be qualified to enter the 8th grade accelerated class (GFA/Alg1) How is the accelerated pathway different from the non-accelerated pathway? The common core math standards are a much more rigorous set of math standards and require both procedural fluency and a deeper conceptual understanding of math concepts. In addition, the math standards are not repeated each year so students essentially have one chance each year to master each standard. Because of this, the accelerated pathways must be a compaction of math courses rather than skipping of courses as we have done in the past. The accelerated courses, then, are even more rigorous as they demand conceptual understanding and procedural fluency at a faster pace in order to cover three years of math in two years’ time. This is why accelerated courses cannot be compared to honors math classes of the past. Students must be able to maintain a grade of A or B to remain in the accelerated math pathway. What is the rationale for the math placement test? The goal for student placement in the secondary math pathways is for each student to be successful in Algebra 1 and higher math courses. It is very important to avoid placing students into an accelerated class too early, where they will encounter frustration and where their interest and competency in math will be diminished. There will be two chances for students to demonstrate their readiness for the accelerated pathway: at the end of 6th grade and at the end of 9th grade. Why can't students enter the accelerated pathway in 9th grade? The accelerated pathway is a compaction of math courses. Students take three years of math classes in a two-year period. Entering the accelerated pathway in 9th would mean students would miss instruction in critically important Algebra 1 math standards. Because the common core math standards are much more rigorous and because math standards are not repeated each year, we do not allow students to skip content. They can potentially enter the accelerated pathway only in 7th or 10th grade or through the option of the Summer Bridge Class explained above.
