Spring is finally here! The sunshine has brightened our days and warmed our hearts. Within the context of eager anticipation of sunny days ahead, Linda Chen, President & Market Leader of Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, came to our March Council Meeting to update us on the progress being made on behalf of children. Her administrative team is now complete with the addition of the new Chief Operating Officer, Jennifer Hamilton. With her team up and running, Linda is focused on implementing the strategic plan to position Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital as a world class place of healing for children. There are several facets to the plan. A summary of these facets would take more space than I have in this letter. So, I will send her presentation to each Guild president for review with all of you. It was exciting to hear firsthand all the exciting opportunities for us to support Mary Bridge programs. Would that more of you could have attended to hear Linda’s inspiring conversation! There were 22 Guilds represented and more than 50 Guild members present. Speaking of support, the very first Mary Bridge Brigade (MBB) Allocations Committee completed their review of funding requests from Mary Bridge departments and programs. They recommended the allocation of $222,990 in funding for education, equipment, orthopedic shoe vouchers, and complex care support for children and families of terminally ill children. The Mary Bridge Brigade Board of Trustees unanimously approved their recommendation. The Allocations process was truly remarkable, involving many of you at the Guild level. Your representatives on the committee were able to share many of your comments and recommendations. Thank you for all of your efforts to make this new Allocations process so successful. Our Finance Committee is already considering setting aside additional funds for allocation later this year. Join me in welcoming Jennifer Hamilton, COO, Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital into the process. We are indeed supporting Linda Chen and her team in establishing Mary Bridge as that “World Class Hospital” which Linda and the Mary Bridge staff envision. At our Council meeting, there were members who expressed interest in becoming members of our Board of Trustees. Please let your Guild President know if you are interested. The MBB Bylaws limit the number of Trustees to two per guild. Some guilds have no representation on the board. You are urged to consider joining a very dynamic group of Trustees. Also, as spring progresses, our Mary Bridge Brigade (MBB) Annual Meeting/Luncheon, May 12, 2016, will soon be here. On that date, I will step away as your MBB President and Joyce Larson will step in. It is my sincere hope that as many of you as possible will attend the luncheon to welcome and support her as she begins her term. This organization is at its best when we work together and support one another in sustaining the legacy of our founders. Thank you for your hard work, dedication and commitment to Mary Bridge. We are doing great things on behalf of children. I look forward to seeing you at the Annual Luncheon! The Projects Committee has been brainstorming ways to help promote guild events and sales. Beginning with the April council meeting, guilds will be given the opportunity to give a brief presentation on an upcoming event. In the future, guilds can use this time not only to promote their event but to share best practices so that other guilds can learn more about event planning. In addition, one of the ongoing sale items will be featured at each council and should be made available for purchase at the meeting. Any guild interested in making a presentation about its upcoming event or being the “featured seller” at Council should contact Jean Horne, Projects Committee Chair, at [email protected] or 253.845.4017.

Be on the lookout! Macy’s Shop for a Cause passes will be sent out in June. Last year the Mary Bridge Brigade made $1,270 from this fun and easy event, and, with the guilds’ ongoing support, we’re looking forward to another successful year.

ARIZONA ROADRUNNERS MEET!

Projects Committee Notes

On March 14th our AZ ROADRUNNERS GUILD met, once again, at the home of Edie Wilkins. Edie’s home was beautiful with Easter décor since she celebrates every holiday in a festive fashion. We were served Chicken Caesar salad, croissants, fruit and a special Banana Split dessert! Ten ladies were present with President Molly Robbers bringing us up-to-date on hospital news. Last summer our group toured the hospital including NICU. The hospital is so up to date and beautiful! Molly explained highlights of the Legacy Campaign and the very successful Fund an Item for the campaign at the FOT. Another discussion was on our ‘home’ guilds with difficulties acquiring leadership.

And to end our day together, we celebrated the marriage of Shirley Hodgson to Jim Schwarz! Shirley was presented a chrysanthemum plant and garden art. Now, we need to remember she has a name change!

If in the Phoenix area in December, please give us a call.

In 2009, two years into my service on the Board of Trustees for Mary Bridge Brigade, Jo Roller, then President of the Brigade, asked if there was anyone on the Board who was experienced in publishing a newsletter, or if there was anyone with writing skills who was willing to take over that task, as a change in office personnel had left that duty unfilled. Since my 40-year administrative career at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and MultiCare Health System had included preparing minutes, business letters, reports, and working with the Print Shop and Mail Room, I volunteered to give the task a try—at least until someone with editorial skills could be enlisted for the task.

I am writing this note as the outgoing Editor for the Mary Bridge Brigade Bulletin to thank everyone for the encouragement, the articles, the pictures, the proofing, and all the help preparing the newsletter for the past seven years. It has been a pleasure serving as the Bulletin Editor, moving it from a single fold edition to an eight-page edition with pictures. It was so much fun working with all of you; I never really looked very hard for a replacement.

With my nine-year service on the MBB Board of Trustees coming to an end, it is with extreme pleasure that I introduce Joanna Manning as the new Editor for the Mary Bridge Brigade Bulletin. Joanna is a member of the Annie D. Bucsko Guild, and a new member of the MBB Board of Trustees beginning in 2015. Joanna is married to Chad, a pilot for Alaska Airlines, and has two children, Dylan (age 9) and

Rowan (age 6). Following graduation from Syracuse University, she served as an Army Medical Service Corps officer in Heidelberg, Germany, and Fort Lewis. Joanna has been active in the Junior League of Tacoma and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and has served on the board of Old Town Cooperative Preschool as both Communications Chair and Parenting Education Coordinator. She currently teaches writing at Bates Technical College.

The last edition of the Bulletin was one that Joanna prepared. She clearly is ready to take over and to add her own unique style. Joanna has indicated she will welcome your input for articles, for photos, and for ways to improve the Bulletin. She can be reached via her e-mail at [email protected].

Jo, thank you for the great opportunity to add a new skill to my retirement resume. Serving with you, Sue Richey and Julie Horschel as the Presidents during my tenure has been the greatest joy I could ever have had. Thank you to all the members of the Mary Bridge Brigade and to Kathryn Stutz for your assistance.

Sincerely, Loretta Clubb

With deep gratitude,

Julie Horschel Mary Bridge Brigade President
