INTERESTED IN BECOMING A CATHOLIC? Part 8

Symbols of the Journey Symbols are an important part of our lives as Christians and they help to define and express the realities of our Cath-olic faith. White Robe – Each newly baptized member of the Church is presented with and dressed in a white garment to symbolize that they have become a new creation in Christ Jesus. They have now clothed themselves in Christ and pledge to always walk in the way of the Lord. The white robe also symbolizes that they have been cleansed of sin and received the gift of new life. It is the outward sign of their Christian dignity and inner devotion to God. Candle – Each newly baptized member of the Church is also presented with a small baptismal candle, which is lit from the Easter Candle. This candle signifies that this newly baptized Catholic has received the light of Christ and is called to always walk as a child of light. The flame of faith is now to be kept burning brightly in the life of the new Chris-tian. Sacred Chrism – This oil, called Sacred Chrism, is blessed by the Cardinal at the annual Chrism Mass (In Bos-ton, at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross during Holy Week). It is a sign of the gift of the Holy Spirit being given to the newly baptized. It is often called the “chrism of salvation” for it sig-nifies that the person has been saved and blessed by Christ, who himself was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King. The oil is a blessing in which we pray that this newly baptized Cath-olic will always live as a member of Christ’s body and have a part in the gift of eternal life.

If you are even a little bit interested in becom-ing a Catholic, please give Fr Shawn a call at

the rectory at 781 665 0152.

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Readings for October 13, 2019

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading Second Kings 5:14-17 Responsorial Psalm Psalm 98:1, 2-3 3-4 Second Reading Second Timothy 2:8-13 Gospel Luke 17:11-19

A holiday weekend in New England is, of itself, a good rea-son to give thanks. Think beyond this colorful world God gives us. Recall those times when God carried you through a difficult time of sickness, death of a loved one, employ-ment concerns, or even just a difficult day. Recall the lepers in today’s gospel. All were made clean, but only one ex-pressed gratitude. Take a moment today to thank God for the many times you were carried/comforted through life’s difficulties.

Readings for October 20, 2019

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading Exodus 17:8-13 Responsorial Psalm Psalm 121:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 Second Reading Second Timothy 3:14-4:2 Gospel Luke 18:1-8

“Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed. . . proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient”. Paul makes it very clear that the scriptures we hear are God’s inspired word for us. Therefore, when we pray with the Scriptures, we can be confident that God shows us where and with whom we are to “proclaim the word.” So as the familiar hymn proclaims, “Take the word of God with you as you go. Take the seeds of God’s word and let them grow.”

Saint Patrick Parish, 71 Central Street, Stoneham is offering a 6-week support group for people who are

grieving the death of a loved one. Meetings take place on Wednesday evenings beginning October

16 from 6:00–7:30 pm. When you are grieving the death of a loved one, nothing may feel

right and you may yearn to get back to normal, but “normal” no

longer exists. Friends and family want to help but often don’t un-

derstand what you are going through. If you are grieving a loss,

consider joining our Grief Support Group this fall to talk and pray

with others who understand where you are. Together, we will ex-

plore the grieving process and consider the spiritual elements of

grief and healing in an environment of understanding, acceptance,

and support grounded in Christian hope. For more information

and to register, please call Patrice at 781-438-0200 or Mary at

781-438-0960. There is no charge for participating in this group,

which is sponsored by the McDonald-Finnegan Funeral Home, 322

Main Street, Stoneham.

We are Baptized and Sent!

NEXT WEEKEND we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Pope Francis invites the entire Church to support mission dio-

ceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders

serve the world’s most vulnerable communities. Please keep the Pope’s missions in your prayers and be gener-

ous in next week’s collection for The Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

GRANDPARENTS/VERY SPECIAL PERSONS DAY

Last Wednesday approximately 200 grandparents and special friends visited St. Mary’s School for our annual Grand-parents/Very Special Persons Day. The morning kicked off with classroom visits

After the classroom visits, all assembled in the Church for Mass, followed by a special reception in the Church Hall for our guests. Thank you to our grandparents and special friends who took time out of their day to visit us. Our students were so proud to show off their school to some of the most important adults in their lives.
