MISSION POSSIBLE Presbyterian Church of the Moriches

The Reverend Jeannine Frenzel, Interim Pastor

May 2014

In Christian circles we usually refer to our object of faith as God. But what if we are also the objects of faith? What if we have faith in God, and God has faith in us? Faith is not one-sided; God calls us into faithful relationship. Having faith in God opens us to see the faith God has in us. God is the cosmic parent looking on us, God’s children, as those who have been gifted with great potential. As the Psalmist writes, “what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor?” (8.4-5) There are many times as a child, when I was afraid of doing something, I would rely on the faith my parents had in me. I remember learning to ride a two-wheeler bike, a roller coaster, and my red Plymouth Duster. Often, they had more faith in me than I had in myself. But that was enough for me to overcome my fear and risk trying new things. We also draw strength from God’s constant faith in us. It gives us the courage to live and love, to attempt new things, to risk failure. And it’s because we know that there is One who has faith in us, the relationship we nurture, and

the ministries we share, even when our faith in ourselves is not running on all four cylinders. Whatever next awaits us around the next corner, even as we are faithful to God, God has faith in us! Hold on! Peace, Pastor Jeannine Frenzel _________________________________

This gives the prospective candidates the information necessary for them to decide if they would like to lead our congregation. The form was completed, reviewed by the Session, and approved at its April 29th meeting. It has been forwarded to the Presbytery who will then review it as well. When approved, the MIF will be put into the online PCUSA job search system for all pastors looking for a

Financial News Through April, 2014 remains a challenging year, financially. Below you’ll find the April and the year-to-date numbers, which are an invitation to all of us to do our utmost to support our Church in giving. Finances April 2014 Year-to-Date Per Capita Giving $ 178.00 $ 1,417.12 Other Giving $12,254.07 $36,678.53 Other Income $ 1,510.00 $ 5,890.00 Total Income $13,942.07 $43,985.65 Total Expenses $12,837.41 $48,325.61 Balance $ 2,833.39 ($ 4,339.96) As you see, we are running the end of April still a deficit of $4,339.96 for the year. While the giving went somewhat up this year, so did our expenses…. The Church also has to pay $4,863.00 Per Capita for 2014, $30.78 for each member. So far, as you can see, we only received $1,417.12 from our membership to support this expense. Again, it will be a great help to the Church budget if each member could donate this amount in addition to his/her regular giving. I would like to thank everyone who’s trying to maintain the financial welfare

of our Church. – Jan van Heyst, Treasurer _________________________________

Celebrating Mom In spring 2013, a young man named Aba Atlas wanted to do something special for his birthday, so he gave his mom a present – and made a video about the gift and its beloved recipient. (Locate it on YouTube by searching for “iProjectAtlas, Dear Mother.”) For years, Aba’s mother had worked long hours outside the home and then cared for her kids each evening. She’d bought a house so her children would always have a place to call home, yet the mortgage caused her great stress. Working at a $30,000/year position, Aba saved enough money to pay off his mom’s mortgage and, on his birthday, presented her with a check. According to a caption in the video, her response was “Wow x 9000.” “I want to celebrate my life by celebrating the woman who gave me life,” Aba says. _________________________________ Assisting us at worship in April: Assistants: Christine Kromhout, Ruth Trimble, Carol Santos and Gerda van Heyst Ushers: Doris Fadek, Nancy and Dick Horton, Diane Yarris, Anna and Michael Troost, Marilyn Runyon, Frank Madigan, Scott and Genevieve Rappold. Deacons Gail Phillips, Erin Rappold, Doris Ryder and Dawn Viggiano served communion at the Maundy Thursday evening service. The youth participated in the Good Friday service.

On Palm Sunday the children’s choir sang under the direction of Ursula Thiele and Susan Trommer. Easter Sunday worship was attended by 127 people and Olivia Lester gave a beautiful rendition of Beethoven’s Grande Sonata Pathetique-Movement 2. The service was followed by “Festive Breads of Easter”, which was enjoyed by all. _________________________________ May Birthdays: 5-1 Abigail Rappold 5-2 Carolyn Turkington 5-5 Jayline Gonzalez 5-7 Elsie Hanson 5-10 Janice Bishop 5-10 Jo-ann Tenke 5-11 Billy John Miterando 5-12 Jason Elock 5-14 Karyn Polistina 5-15 Sophia Waters 5-21 Kyra Kromhout 5-22 Kai Kromhout 5-15 Peggy Jaro 5-28 Kelli Alfredson June Birthdays: 6-2 Jessica Silvestri 6-4 Julia Mitterando 6-11 Amber Lindner 6-12 Genevieve Rappold 6-14 Bill Sallee 6-18 Wendy Turkington 6-18-Doris Fadek 6-20 Isabelle Chapman 6-23 Njeri Mburu 6-23 Shiru Mburu 6-24 Susan Lynn Tommer 6-26 Vivian Dorr Early July Birthdays: 7-1 Kim Guteres 7-5 Susan Maschke 7-5 Donna Ramasir 7-6 Robert Mitterando III

Your Help is Needed at the Clean up and Work Day at the Manse, on Saturday, May 17, from 9:00 AM. The Youth Group will participate in the outside clean-up of the manse property and garage. Bring your rakes! Adult volunteers (men and women) are needed for work inside the manse (cleaning of windows, etc. ) and the men for light “fix-it” chores. As we get further into the interview process for a full-time minister it is our responsibility to ensure the manse is in order. Contact Scott Rappold at 878-6516 or [email protected] to offer your assistance as we complete the needed repairs at the manse. The manse needs to be in good order as we approach the time of interviewing for a pastor for our congregation. _________________________________ “Walk more closely with God, get nearer to Christ, seek to exchange hope for assurance. The Gift Card Fundraiser continues to help our church. Cards for King Kullen, Waldbaums and Pathmark are available from Winnie Thomason and Linda Davis each Sunday in the fellowship hall at coffee time. Be sure to see Kerri Crawford as well. She sells gift cards for every other imaginable place – local and throughout the country. Please support both of these efforts to raise funds for our church.

Web Updates Do you have photos to share for our website? Kerri Crawford is appealing for photos of church events, to be added to our photo gallery on the website. You can send them to her via email or provide prints to her by mail or in person. They will be returned to you. Kerri is also working on a “Church History” section in the photo gallery.

Whatever you can provide will be appreciated! Please send this information to Kerri Crawford at [email protected]. _________________________________ Our deepest sympathy … To the Rappold Family on the death of Erin’s father, Edward McGinn, after a brief illness on April 4. Cards may be sent to Erin and Scott at 2 Newport Beach Blvd., East Moriches, NY 11940. Flowers were placed on the Communion table on April 27 by Dawn Viggiano in memory of her grandmother, Rose Bainton. _________________________________

Beauty in brokenness Leonard Sweet, author of Strong and Broken Places, describes a style of Japanese pottery called kintsukuroi. It’s the art of repairing pottery with gold or silver lacquer, leaving the piece more beautiful for having been broken. God is like a kintsukuori potter, healing and staying near to the brokenhearted (see Psalm 34:18, 51:17; and 147:3). Instead of ashes, mourning and despair, God provides “a crow of beauty,” “the oil of joy” and “a garment of praise” (Isaiah 61:3, NIV). Although earthly brokenness brings pain, the Master Creator can turn it into something amazing that glorifies him. When life seems to fall apart, remember that our powerful God can make you more beautiful for having been broken. _________________________________ “A child needs your love most when he deserves it least.” – Erma Bombeck

DATE CHANGE

Our Spring Yard Sale will now be held on Saturday, June 14th from 9 AM-3 PM. Plans are now well under way to hold our Spring Yard Sale in conjunction with the Annual Street Fair in CM. Volunteers are now coming forth, but more help is needed. Contact Ginny Chichester (516-446-7942) if you can bake item(s) for the bake sale. These should be individually wrapped for sale. Nancy & Dick Horton, Garry Lester and Dick Chichester will be manning

the BBQ stand. Doug Trommer will need help with setting up covered stations. Contact him if you can assist ([email protected]). Help is needed to assist our youth with setting up tables and donated items for sale. Donations of used clothing, jewelry, children’s toys, and treasurers from our attics, basements and closets are appreciated. Donated items may be brought to the church beginning June 7th. Of course, help will be needed to clean up after the Yard Sale. Our traditional Country Fair, normally held in the fall, has been cancelled at this time because of the huge commitment of help required to prepare and run the Fair. This decision does not come with ease. It means a loss of several thousand dollars to our church. The June Yard Sale, which requires a smaller amount of volunteers, but no less commitment on the part of our congregation for support, will be our major outdoor event for 2014. Therefore, it is vital we work together to ensure its success to reduce our deficit, and to be financially able to support the full-time ministry we have committed ourselves to. Contact Ursula Thiele 878-7215, [email protected] , Gail Phillips 281-1202, [email protected] or Linda Bohleber 438-9712 or 772-5046 to offer your assistance. Sign-up sheets will also be posted for you to volunteer. We will be raffling a basket of delicious gourmet fare at the Grandpa’s Attic (Spring) Yard Sale on June 14. Your help is needed to fill out the basket. If you would like to assist, please contact Doris Fadek (281-4814) or select an item from the suggested list which is

located in the church kitchen, and bring your item in no later than May 25. Raffle tickets will also be available for a handmade queen-sized quilt from Gerda van Heyst, as well as a picture of the beautiful quilt. The winning ticket will be drawn will at the Christmas Fair in November. These fund-raisers have been approved by the Session. _________________________________

Thank you to our Junior/Senior High youth for the wonderful job leading the congregation in the Tenebrae Service on Good Friday! Our youth will assist with the Manse Cleanup on Saturday, May 17 beginning at 9 AM. Bring a rake and work gloves to clean up the grounds and the garage. Youth Sunday will be celebrated on May 18 at which time the youth of the church will lead us in worship. Special music will be performed. The Sunday School Choir will sing. _________________________________

One Great Hour of Sharing The OGHS offering is traditionally collected during Lent. We will continue to collect your financial gift beyond Easter. All of the money received goes directly to OGHS and is divided in three ways: (1) The Hunger Program (2) The Self Development of People and (3) Disaster Relief.

Particularly noted during hurricane Sandy, our area became recipients of OGHS funds. So, this money is used locally as well as world-wide. Building HOPE, faith, community growths in the face of challenging circumstances has been some of the goals for the past 65 years (since 1949) by Presbyterians like you, and a difference has been made. In the book of Hebrews 13.16, Christians are reminded to do good and to share what we have. On behalf of all the lives touched by your generosity thank you for meeting the needs of the most vulnerable members of God’s family. Whatever amount you can give will be welcomed for this cause. Donations can be added to your weekly envelope or separately with the amount designated for OGHS noted. If you have any questions please see Jeff or Judy. Thank you. Jeff Dorr and Judy Mitterando, Stewardship Committee. _________________________________ “(A mother) never quite leaves her children at home, even when she doesn’t take them along.” – Margaret Culkin Banning

God is nigh

The simple but powerful bugle melody “Taps” has been a standard component of U.S military funerals since 1891. It’s also played during each of the 2,500 military wreath ceremonies conducted every year at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, including those held on Memorial Day. Many legends exist about the origin of “Taps” – both it melody and its lyrics. The words below, by Horace Lorenzo Trim, make an appropriate bedtime prayer. Day is done, gone the sun From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky All is well safely rest God is nigh. Fading light dims the sight And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright From afar, drawing near Falls the night. Thanks and praise for our days ‘Neath the sun, ‘neath the stars, ‘neath the sky As we go, this we know God is nigh.

OUR PANTRY Our food pantry continues to be a busy place! We have been very fortunate to have many volunteers on Monday nights and very generous donors to keep our shelves stocked. Thank you to Doug Trommer for reinforcing all of our pantry shelves with plywood. One of our biggest expenses is plastic grocery bags. We use about 500 each week. If you could save your plastic grocery bags for us, it would be greatly appreciated.

A Sunday school teacher was telling his class the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), in which Jesus describes three individuals’ responses to a man found beaten and in grave need of help along the side of the road. Hoping to bring home the point of the parable, the teacher asked the class, “If you saw a person lying on the roadside all wounded and bleeding, what would you do?” A hushed silence followed, broke after a moment by a thoughtful little girl: “I think I’d throw up.”
