Mission Appeal July 26-27, 2014 Diocese of Gallup New Mexico At all Masses on July 26 and 27 there will be a special collection for the Mission Appeal. Please make your check payable to St. Aloysius and note that it is for the Mission Appeal. If you will not be in town, you may mail or bring your check to the office. We thank you for your generosity and hope that you will help this appeal be a fruitful one. Fr. Dan Kassis will make a plea during all the masses. The Gallup Diocese is the poorest diocese in the USA. We depend on outside assistance for 85% of resources to be present here with some of the poorest of the poor. There are also grave problems with addictions especially alcoholism and nearly every family is affected by this. I am Fr. Dan Kassis. Concerning myself, I came to the Diocese of Gallup as a volunteer to work in the Indian missions in 1974 from California after my first year in college. I then became a seminarian for the diocese. I was ordained in 1981. I have served in the Diocese of Gallup in a number of capaci- ties ranging from Pastor to Dean to Vocations Director. I have also served outside of the diocese in higher education in Rome, as an Air Force Chaplain and in work in dioceses in California on special assignments. Our former Bishop Donald Pelotte (the first indian bishop in the US, now deceased) asked me to try to “heal” the parishes and missions in the Four Corners part of the diocese mostly on the Navajo Reservation as they had been wounded by unfortunate circumstances over the past 20 years due to economic, cultural and church community factors. We made tremendous progress in Christ the King Parish and Sacred Heart Parish on and off the Navajo reservation. But it is going to take more time. I had practi- cally no staff, no resources – we were 95% dependent on resources from outside areas. At one time as many as 5 priests, 2-4 brothers and a bevy of sisters staffed these parishes and missions. But we are making progress and God is very good. The people though poor and marginalized are a kind, good and generally happy people. I thank God for the opportunity to share life in Christ with them and to serve them. 2025 Stuart Avenue Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70808-3979 (225) 343-6657 Fax (225) 344-6847 Website: www.aloysius.org July 20, 2014 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 27, 2014 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time Parish Bulletin Issue 25 Volume XLVI Facebook: St. Aloysius Catholic Church Mission Statement St. Aloysius Parish embraces and nurtures all, inspiring each to act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly in the love of God. I am JOSEPH KUNNASSERIL known by my religious name

SANJAY, from the time of my religious profession in 1972. I hail from Kerala, the southern- most state of INDIA. I am 63 and have been a priest for 34 years in the order “THE INDIAN MISSIONARY SOCETY.“ I have done 26 years of priestly ministry in India as a Missionary, Rector of Seminary, Pastor, and Superior of a Retreat Center. My parents have been deceased long ago. We are 7 siblings, 5 male and 2 female one of which is a Nun in the order of Mother Theresa. My oldest brother Jacob is a U.S. citizen in California. All others live in India with their families.

I appreciate and thank God for his gift of vocation to the priest-hood. I have never been sad about my choice. I feel proud about my call but I realize that it is a gratuitous gift from God to minister to His people. I felt the attraction to priestly life from the very early stage of six. My house was situated next to the parish church and that enabled me to attend every one of the services done in the church. I daily attended Ho-ly Mass, all the funerals possible and “play” Mass with my friends. I spent lot of time with the priests when I was back from School. The life of two pastors exerted quite an influence on my life, thus they become my role models. After graduating from High School I joined The Indian Missionary Society to become a missionary priest. I had 12 years of training in the Seminary. I was ordained on 8 April 1980. My Mom was present at my ordination but my Dad passed away while I was doing theology.

I have had a great deal of experience in the missions, parishes, and Minor Seminary of another diocese. The best and most rewarding of all my priestly ministries was my last six years in the IMS Retreat cen-ter in the state, Kerala, from where I came to the U.S. Different types of retreats were available for people to attend. People used to come in large groups, each staying for five days. The night vigil once a month was participated by 30,000 people as one group. Preaching by Bishops, Priests, Lay preachers, Adoration of the Eucharist, Confessions, Nove-nas, Rosaries took precedence over many activities that take place dur-ing the vigil, but culminating with Eucharist. Many people used to get healed of their ailments during the healing prayer.

I come with a generous heart to help Fr. Than Vu and all the staff and ministers in this parish ministry. I hope to get to know you with our frequent meetings after the Mass. May God bless you and accom-pany you through your life. I love y’all,

Fr. Joseph Sanjay

Our goal is to have two catechists teaching together in the classroom. We are currently looking for four catechists to teach this year. If you have not taught before, we will provide you with training.

Please contact Tricia Greely at [email protected] or at 343-6657 if you have questions about PSR registration or if you are interest-ed in getting more information about becoming a catechist.

SUMMER MUSIC AT ST. ALOYSIUS The Summer Choir meets each Sunday through Labor Day. Summer choir is open to all adult, youth, and children of the parish. It is an ideal way for a family to share in music ministry together. This choir is de-signed to allow individuals and families to try out singing in a church choir without having to commit to a mid-week rehearsal. Summer Choir is flexi-ble. It is organized to accommodate the vacation and summer schedules of our parishioners.

The choir will rehearse at 10:00 a.m. each Sunday in the Convent Choir Room. The Summer Choir will lead the music for the 11:00 a.m. mass. For more information about the Summer Choir, contact Ken Thevenet, [email protected], 343-6657, ext 3030.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC?

The Rite of Christina Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is both the process by which we bring unbaptized and baptized Christians into the Catholic Faith, and the Book that tells us how to do it (The Rite). St Aloysius has a long history of RCIA and today we con-tinue that ministry of evangelization whereby the entire parish welcomes, stands with throughout the process, and supports in prayer and personal communication, those individuals who have asked to be one with us at the Eucharistic Table.

As many of you know, RCIA is a year-round process – it begins anew each Sunday for anyone interested in finding out about the Catholic Church. And on any given Sunday the RCIA Team needs the physical presence of parishion-ers to serve as sponsors. Currently we need six (6) spon-sors for the summer who can walk with and share their faith with one of our Candidates. The commitment is one hour after 9:00 mass through the summer when your can-didate celebrates the Rite of Full Communion with the Catholic Church.

Please call Rebecca East at 328-4366, or email [email protected]. And please continue to pray for our Neophytes, KJ and Emily, and our Candidates Cynthia, Jacob, Jonathan, Michael, Mary Jean and Tiffany.
