Media guide for eating disorders Media has a powerful role in increasing community understanding of the risk factors and impact of eating disorders. However, the illnesses can be difficult to accurately and sensitively portray. Certain types of reporting can potentially lead to harmful impacts on those living with or at risk of an eating disorder.

While there is emerging activity in many countries – including UK, US, Canada - Australia has had the longest running active strategy to engage journalists under the Mindframe National Media Initiative.

“Journalists (and anyone) on social media also need to be aware of the very public nature of tweets and posts… …The language we use and the stories and comments we link to can all have an impact” Jaelea Skehan, HIMH Dir 2014

• The speed of news and the race to be ‘first’ with breaking news

creates additional challenges for media when we are dealing with suicide and mental illness issues.

Australian media are generally aware of their responsibilities when reporting suicide, but taking international news feeds can

pose real challenges. The reporting Robin Williams’ death was an example of this.
