CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - Around 1,000 bamboo seedlings will be grown by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) along the river-banks of Cagayan River, beginning this month.

The t ree growing initiative, called “Iswag Kagay-an”, kicks-off on April 11 in Baran-gay Mambuaya, in co-ordination with the local residents, members of the Oro Association of Rafters, river guides and their dependents.

DOLE-Misamis Orien-tal OIC Atheneus Vasallo said the greening effort

is part of the advocacy of the Department to protect the environment.

The project, which seeks to grow bamboo trees along the denuded side of the river to replen-ish the trees destroyed by typhoons Sendong and Pablo, is also supportive to the greening program of President Benigno S. Aquino III.

Mr. Vasallo said the DOLE has organized the dependents of the river guides into an as-sociation to care for and ensure the survival of the planted bamboo trees.

In return, DOLE will

assist the association and train them on product development to enhance their existing livelihood on souvenir making and augment their income.

DOLE-10 Regional Director Johnson Ca-ñete has turned-over the P419,350 check to the Cagayan de Oro River Guides and Vendors Association last April 1 during the launching of the Iswag Kagay-an greening initiative.

According to Mr. Va-sallo, the project will also be replicated in the neighboring riverbanks of the city. (APB/PIA/asf)

UNITED Nationalist Alli-ance (UNA) San Juan City Rep. JV Ejercito Estrada welcomed the endorsement of Ilocos Norte Gover-nor Imee Marcos and her brother, Senator Bongbong Marcos of his candidacy. On Thursday, April 4, the Marcoses released a statement declaring sup-port for Ejercito Estrada’s senatorial bid and asking their allies in Ilocos region to support him in the May elections. The leading UNA sena-torial candidate said he is grateful for the trust given

to him by Governor Imee and Senator Bongbong who are like a sister and a brother to him and their allies in Ilocos region. “Salamat sa aking mga kapatid na si Governor Imee at Senator Bong-bong. Malaking tulong ang kanilang suporta upang mapalakas ang ating boto sa buong Ilocandia,” said Ejercito Estrada. The San Juan solon vowed to help Sen. Bong-bong and become one of the voices of the Ilocanos if he gets elected in the Senate.

This is shown in business tax collections during the first quarter of 2013, which went up by P22.8 million, compared to figures during the same period last year. The city treasurer’s of-fice reported that from

January to March 2013, the city was able to collect a hefty P307,608,063.56. Last year’s collections was 284,770,609.34. The figure is expected to increase as more companies are expected to open here this year. Meanwhile, Real Prop-erty Taxes during the period

also posted an increase from P139,933,503.98 to P150,185,661.24. City Hall is projecting an income of P444,695,600 from business tax and P243,730,400 from RPT, with total local tax revenues of P871,226,000 this year, as reflected in the 2013 executive budget.

This is aside from col-lections from permits and licenses, service, and other income. The report shows that the city’s Internal Revenue Allotment this year in-creased from the monthly figure of P66,404,451 in 2012 to P72,645,487.(LCR/jdelpf)

DEBUNKING its rival’s claim that its postpaid subscriber base posted the highest growth in the industry, Globe Telecom revealed that it gained the most number of postpaid subscribers in 2012 not by basis of percentage growth but by actual base growth in net subscriber additions. According to its official disclosures, Globe acquired 279,762 new postpaid cus-tomers, trumping Smart which added 132,943 sub-scribers ending 2012. Sun, on the other hand, gained 218,352. “Percentage growth does not necessarily translate to

the highest growth in the industry, especially if you’re coming from a relatively lower base, thus giving the perception that your growth is bigger than the rest. Real growth looks at actual sub-scriber additions over a specific period of time,” Globe Head of Postpaid Martha Sazon said. On a quarter-on-quarter level, Globe still claimed the top spot with 71,715 new subscribers in 4Q 2012, a 14% increase from the previous quarter. Smart obtained 24,607 customers during the same period while Sun added 46,495. Ending 2012, Globe post-

paid subscriber share stood at 43.5%, Sun at 39.4%, while Smart gets the re-maining 17.1%. In the area of postpaid service revenues, Globe clearly had the edge over its competitors, with revenues of P22.8 billion ending 2012, a hefty 24% increase from previous year’s P18.5 bil-lion, translating to a 56.2% postpaid revenue share. On the other hand, combined revenues of its two competi-tors were at P17 billion with a 43.8% combined revenue share. With this phenomenal growth in postpaid sub-scriber base and service rev-

enues, Globe easily secures the spot of being the big-gest and most consistently-growing postpaid brand in the country. Early this year, Globe scored exclusive deals with two of the world’s biggest smartphone brands Sam-sung and CloudFone, get-ting first dibs on the Sam-sung Galaxy SIII mini and the CloudFone tablet and phone bundle. Both devices are offered with more plan options, giving subscribers more flexibility and the true freedom to enjoy their calls, texts, and mobile internet. Just last March, with its

sities of education – and this means more and more costs to shoulder.

And towards the end when your nestlings have started to fly with wings of their own, you soon realize that your own productivity isn’t everlasting. Somehow you do wake up, needing to find ways to fend for yourself, before falling flat on your face with the grim truth of zero active income.

As you move forward to success, are you amassing sizable wealth? How do you intend to leave it as a legacy to your heirs? Perhaps it would be appropriate to plan your estate as well.

As time takes its toll

“SUCCESS is goals and all else is commentary.” – Brian Tracy

Have you ever pondered where you are right now in your financial life? What have you done so far? What are the hard financial goals that you need to address now and in the future?

Ask yourself where do you want to be financially in five years? In ten years? Close your eyes, project yourself into the future, and picture out an ideal image of yourself. Then open your eyes and go back into the present and think of what you should be doing now and in the next few months and years to make that future vision of yours a reality. This is “back-from-the-future” thinking.

Every single individual goes through the different stages of life. And as we go though these stages, it pays to realize that each one has its own unique financial concerns.

What is your financial life stage?

After hurdling through college and landing a job of your own, some level of independence begins. When your parents cease giving you obligatory fi-nancial support, the world then expects you to begin working for your keep.

But when time comes that you have a family of your own, more goals kick in and some priori-ties may change! More mouths to feed mean new expenses vying for the same hard-earned peso. And you continue on hoping that more and more of that peso will come. Yet, the same mouths you feed will eventually find the neces-

and whether you like it or not, these financial needs unwaveringly arrive. The kids grow up and you do age older, steadily with every passing year. By the laws of nature, it is but unavoidable – your mind and body deteriorates in function through time. These are stark realities, which in due time you’ll have to confront face to face. The big question is: “Are you financially pre-pared?”

Robert Schuller once said, “Spectacular achieve-ment is always preceded by unspectacular preparation.”

Be spectacular. Be pre-pared! It’s never too late to act now!

Crazy Fillings

Karong umaabot April 14, 2013, pili-on na usab a n g p i n a k a g w ap a u g pinakatakos nga babaye, isip Binibining Pilipinas 2013.

Mga kababayen-an nga nagagikan pa sa kalainlaing syudad o distrito dinhe sa Pilipinas ang magkompe-tinsyahay and will show their best to the judges

Usa sa mga kalagmitan nga ipangutana sa Q and A portion ang “What is the significance of having a beauty contest this days?”

CAMP EVANGELISTA, Cagayan de Oro City - Troops from the 36th In-fantry “Valor” Battalion have encountered a group of rebels near the battalion headquarters in Barangay Dayo-an, Tago Surigao del Sur, 1:40 yesterday morning.

Lt. Col. Eugnio Julio C. Osias IV, spokesperson of the Fourth Infantry Divi-sion, Philippine Army, said the troops were con-ducting a security patrol in the immediate vicinity of the headquarters when they met the 30 rebels, armed with jungle bolos.

The NPAs were on their way to cut down the DOLE banana plantation in the area.

The rebels withdrew leaving behind one dead

comrade behind. The troops recovered

one AK-47 automatic rifle with ammunitions beside the body, which was im-mediately turned-over to the Scene of the Crime Operative (SOCO) for evidence gathering.

Col. Cayetano, com-mander of 401st Infantry “Unity” Brigade said, “We are happy with the turn-out of this morning’s military operations that proved to be successful.”

He thanked the people in the community, “who have given our soldiers timely information pre-venting the conduct of another economic sabo-tage that would add up again to the sufferings of Surigaonons.”

Col. Cayetano believed

that “with this kind of sup-port given by the people, we can have a more stable security environment in this province.”

Lt. Colonel Joseph Nor-win D Pasamonte, 36IB commanding officer, said “Though our soldiers are security conscious and are conducting patrols as a method of active defense, the credit for this success-ful encounter is for the people in the community, who reported the presence of the rebels to us.”

He was happy that no soldier was hurt, “but we are also sorry for the death of the rebel – another Fili-pino wasted his life for the wrong cause and means of the NPA leadership.”

Meanwhile, Lt. Col. Osias said the whole divi-

sion extends its sincerest condolences to the family of the dead NPA member.

“Another life was put to waste, which is unnec-essary, only if the rebels willed to end this conflict peacefully and negotiate with the government.

The 4ID, he added, as-sures the people “that they can continue to live in peace because your sol-diers are always ready to protect everybody from any group who would want to conduct atrocities and terrorism.”

Lt. Col. Osias further said, the cooperation of the people “fuelled us more, we are more determined in making our area peaceful because the people are with us in winning the peace.” (PR/asf )

THE Kibawe Central School biodiversity conservation program includes all living things that cover the whole environment of the school including pupils, teach-ers, and the entire popula-tion living in a sustainable school community. When we think of biodiversity as the environment, or as nature, wildlife, plants and animals, but the important thing to remember is its all inter- connected. Thus the biodiversity for the school environment is life.

The conservation pro-gram on biodiversity in school offers essential need and care for the environ-ment. Yet the conserva-tion and sustainable use of biodiversity is critical both global economy and for the basic resources needed to support our planet’s grow-ing populations. With these phenomena, the school is on critical on its survival if the biodiversity relationship toward the school commu-nity is not balance in nature.

In supporting biodi-versity in school, local ba-rangay officials meet their duties in support of the annual tree planting activity in school last February 14, 2013. Government agencies such DENR, DA, LGU, Kasilak Foundation, and

other stakeholders who provide seedlings, seeds, planting materials, financial support and other means which helped sustain the school as Sustainable and Eco- Friendly School 2nd place during the previous search in the national level.

Biodiversity conserva-tion in school features the collection of butterfly and other insects in a butterfly dome, fernery, botanical garden, orchard, fruits and vegetable garden, plant school nursery, and vermi composting, science park , herbal garden, rice field, fishpond, crop plantations, forest, wildlings, wild ani-mals, and all other living creatures. The school also maintained its preservation on School Greening Pro-gram, Gulayan sa paaralan

at Tahanan Project, Solid Wastes Management, Tree Planting and other biodi-versity conservation on the curriculum which devel-oped and explore children’s right and responsibilities in caring and preserving school biodiversity relation-ship on its conservation.

Through much efforts of the school with the genuine supports of the whole teach-ing staff, PTA, LGU, East Kibawe Barangay officials and other stake holders on its sustainability, this school year is another challenge to compete the 2013 National Search on Sustainable and Eco- Friendly Schools. Thus, “Every child born into world has an innate pleasure…, delight…, interest and curi-osity in the natural world.” (Sir David Attenborough)

By Rutchie C. Aguhob OZAMIZ CITY - The Commission on Elec-tions (Comelec) has re-activated the registration records of public school teachers who have been appointed as members of the Board of Election Inspectors (BEI) for the May 13 elections. This, after they were inadvertently deactivat-ed due to their alleged failure to vote in the

two succeeding regular elections. However, the con-cerned teachers claimed to have voted in the May 10, 2010 national and local elections, the first automated election, and based on preliminary verification, the Comelec said they might have er-roneously voted in the polling place of the clus-tered precincts where they were assigned as members of the BEI.

They could not have left their assignment on the day of the election but just voted in their assigned polling place and not in the precinct where they were regis-tered. The Comelec rules that only the public school teachers who are registered voters can be appointed as members of the BEI. Meanwhile, reports from the field offices

of the Comelec raised concern on the shortage of public school teach-ers who were appointed to serve as members of the BEIs but whose registration records were deactivated on the above-stated ground. Similar issue arose in the 2010 elections and the Comelec addressed the matter through Resolution No. 8878, promulgated on May 7, 2010, which resolved to

activate the registration records of the BEIs, in order for them to serve in the elections. For the same reason and in the exigency of the service, the Comelec said there is an impera-tive need to activate the inadvertently de-activated registration records of the BEIs in order for them to serve in the forthcoming May 13, national and local elections.

Thus, Comelec Reso-lution No. 9650 was promulgated by the Comelec, headed by Chairman Atty. Sixto Brillantes, last Feb. 28, for the duly appointed public school teach-ers who will serve as members of the Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs), in the upcom-ing national and local elections.
