1 MIMS ACADEMY PROSPECTUS MIMS Academy was established on 7th May 2003 as a wing of Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences Ltd. MIMS Academy was brought under the MIMS Academy Trust. Purpose of the Academy is augmenting educational program of MIMS. MIMS Academy is an accredited center by the National Board of Examinations, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Department, Govt. of India to conduct training for DNB students in ENT, General Medicine, General Surgery, Family Medicine, Anesthesia, Pediatrics, OBG, Radiology and Cardiology. Besides these specialties, efforts are being taken to get accreditation for two more subjects, i.e. Nephrology and Urology. MIMS College of Nursing gives training for BSc Nursing and MSc Nursing of Calicut University and MIMS School of Nursing for GNM of Kerala Government. DIPLOMATE NATIONAL BOARD EXAMINATIONSThe National Board of Examination (NBE) was establishedin 1975 by the Govt. of India with the prime objectivesof improving the quality of medical education byestablishing high and uniform standards of post graduateexaminations in Modern Medicine on an all India basis.MIMS Academy is an accredited center by the NationalBoard of Examinations, Ministry of Health and FamilyWelfare Department, Govt. of India, to conduct trainingfor DNB students in broad Specialties like ENT, GeneralMedicine, General Surgery, Family Medicine,Anesthesia, Pediatrics, OBG and Radiology.

In this course students will be involved in the workof the organization like an employee and therewill be a great emphasis on work experience alongwitht the academic pursuit.

The candidates will be posted in the cardiacsurgical operation theatre along with a consultantcardiac anesthesiologist. During the later part oftheir training period, the candidates will beallowed to give anesthesia for the open heartsurgery independently, under the supervision ofthe Head of the Department of CardiacAnesthesiology.

The candidates will also be posted on duty in thecardiac surgical intensive care unit (CSICU),where they will be involved in the managementof the postoperative cardiac surgical patients.

They will also be posted in other areas of thedepartment of cardiac anesthesiology, where theywill participate in the pre-anesthetic evaluation ofthe cardiac surgery patients, management ofemergencies in ICCU and management of the patients undergoing interventional procedures in the cardiaccatheterization lab.

The candidates are allowed to do original research work under the guidance of the Head of the Department ofCardiac Anesthesiology, which can be presented in conferences or published in journals. They will be encouragedto make at least one national publication and one international publication.

A copy of all the procedures performed shall be submitted by the candidate to the HOD in the form of a logbookby the end of the training period.

Two candidates shall be selected in one academic year.

CERTIFICATE OF TRAINING

After completion of one calendar year from the date of joining, the candidate will be awarded a “ Post DoctoralCertificate in Cardiac Anaesthesiology and Critical Care” by the MIMS Academy of Medical Sciences on thebasis of the assessment of his performance.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

The M.Sc. Nursing Course at MIMS College of Nursing is designed to meet the continuing educational needs ofnursing professional to equip them as practitioners, academicians, researchers and administrators in the area oftheir specialization. Nursing. Registration in Kerala Nurses andMidwives Council at the time of application. DMLT course was started in MIMS in 2004under MIMS Academy. This course isrecognized by Directorate of Medical Education,Govt. of Kerala.

AIM OF THE COURSE

To train the students for carrying out thelaboratory investigation accurately and reportto the medical officers which will help themdecide on the correct line of treatment for thepatient.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION

Minimum educational qualification candidateswho have passed the plus two examination ofthe Universities in Kerala with Physics, Chemistry, Biology as optional or any other examination recognized bythe Universities in Kerala as equivalent to plus two, provided that they have secured an aggregate not less than50 % marks in the optional. Relaxation of 10 % marks will be allowed to candidates of SC/ST and 5 % marks tosocially educationally backward communities. Application form can be obtained from the principals of the StateGovernment Medial Colleges on payment of prescribed application fee. Application form correctly filled in shouldreach the Director of Medical Education, Thiruvananthapuram on or before the last date fixed for the receipt ofapplication. A self-addressed envelope and post card should be enclosed with the application. The candidateshould submit the copies of relevant certificates along with application form.

REGISTRATION FOR ADMISSION

Admission shall be made on the basis of merit assessed on the basis of total marks secured by the candidatein part II of the optional subject (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) atPlus 2 or equivalent examination. Rank will be prepared in eachcategory according to marks secured by the candidate. Selectedcandidates will be called for a personal appearance at the Directorateof Medical Education. The candidates will have the freedom to selectany course for which seats are available. Option once exercised willbe final. The candidates should submit original certificate at thetime of interview.

Selected candidates should report before the Principal of concernedinstitution on the date and time as directed by the Directorate ofMedical Education in the admission memo.

DIPLOMA IN ANESTHESIA TECHNOLOGY

The result of recent advances in critical care medicine encourage doctors to take very sick patient for majorsurgery. This requires skilled anesthesia and postoperative care. It is now being recognized that anesthesiologistrequires trained help to handle these procedures. This skilled assistant need to be trained and this course aimsat giving such training. The Course will cover basic anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology especially with respectto airway management and relevant medication. A medical document is the compilation of pertinent facts of the patient life history, illness, treatment andrehabilitation. It is a compilation of scientific data derived from many sources coordinated in to documents andavailable for various uses. The basic medical record is ameans of communication between attending physician andall medical paramedical personnel, primarily compiled for careand treatment of the patient. It is also a valuable tool mea-suring quality of medical care rendered by the hospital andits personnel. It is high time to evolve uniformly, a mecha-nism for collection, processing, analysis and transmissionof information required for organizing and operating healthservices and also for research and training. COURSE OBJECTIVE

This is intended for aspirants who are keen to chooseMedical Instrumentation as their career path. Theobjective is to provide them with a platform in orderto qualify them to meet the demands of this industry.

It will provide participants with first hand knowledgeand hands on experience in dealing with live medicalequipment that are in day–to-day use at ourinstitutions. It could also be useful for Students togather additional knowledge as we gives informationnot taught in educational institutions.

COURSE DETAILS

The course will be of twelve weeks duration followed by an exam.

Selected participants will follow the course curriculum, which is divided into various modules such as CardiologyEquipment, Intensive Care Equipment, and Laboratory Equipments, Operation Theatre Equipments, RadiologyEquipments and similar commonly found equipment in a hospital.

Each day the student will be an “observer” for a certain specified number of hours under experienced trainershandling equipment repair. They will be assigned for different department in the hospitals on a rotation basis forbetter exposure.

There will be theory classes and “hands on” learning sessions in the afternoons conducted by experiencedinstructors. These will have to be attended by all participants and the final examination is based on the portionscovered in these sessions. We will provide course materials and candidates can make their own notes during thelecture sessions. Reference books available at leading bookshops will be recommended but purchase is optional.
