Executive Summary:

Move the Geosciences Department from College of Science to CEOAS

Will become a “group” like other groups currently in COAS

No changes will be made to the Geosciences classes

This will not change the content of any existing undergraduate or graduate programs

1. Merger of the Department of Geosciences with the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences to form the College of Earth,

Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS, see´- os)


Impacts to Students: Names of degrees will change, but not the structure or content

Budget Impacts: Geosciences Department budget will follow the Geosciences Department into CEOAS. The transitional budget is minimal.

External Liaison:• None (but none was expected)

Internal Liaison: • College of Agricultural Sciences

Issues: Does this impact the ability to get a Professional Certification in geology? [ No. The title of the degree doesn’t matter. The certification is a test (≈ the bar exam). The core set of courses that train students for certification is still in the Geology curriculum. ]

Builds on the Masters in Public Policy (MPP) program, although anyone can enter this program without the MPP by completing core requirements from the MPP

Emphasis on theoretical knowledge, research and analytic skills, and policy practice

Areas of concentration:Environmental PolicyInternational PolicySocial PolicyRural PolicyScience and Technology Policy

Expect 5 students per year, with 25 in the program at any one time

Impacts to Students: Nothing negative. Good way to channel interest coming out of the MPP program.

Budget Impacts: 1.5 FTE GTA



Issues: What is the demand for such Ph.D.’s in academia? [ More a question than an issue. There doesn’t seem to be any good way to predict this. ]

Carves a degree from the New Media Communications program classes (course designator will still be NMC)

Focuses on the development, use, critical evaluation, and regulation of new electronic communication technologies

Demand:325 students in NMC option in SQ 2011, expected to grow to > 400 this year

Impacts to Students: Great opportunity. Would be able to get a degree in this area instead of just an option.

Budget Impacts: Initially, Faculty 6.0 FTE, Support staff 1.0 FTE



Issues:Does the phrase “Digital Communications” imply what this major is about, or does it imply the design of electronics communications systems? [ That’s why the original name was changed to “Digital Communication Arts”. ]This program needs a fulltime advisor if this many students are expected to get internships.[ Jeff Hale will be assuming the advisor position. ]
