Howard Thoyre
Howard Thoyre, provost and vice chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will begin serving as interim chancellor of the UW Center campuses on December 16, 1996.
A native of Wing, North Dakota, Dr. Thoyre 's first job was teaching all eight grades in a rural school. From there he moved on to teaching high school mathematics, then on to instructing mathematics at the university level. He came to UWSP in 1962 after receiving a bachelor's degree from Minot State College and a master 's degree from Louisiana State University. He later earned the doctorate from UW-Madison.
During his career at UWSP, Howard Thoyre rose through the ranks to become chairman of the mathematics department, assistant dean and then dean of the College of Letters and Science. In April of 1987 he was appointed vice chancellor and received the title of provost in 1993. For six months in 1989 and again for about a year beginning in July, 1995, he served as the University's interim chancellor.
This year Dr. Thoyre was given the Community Award by the Academy of Letters and Science and the Athletic Director's Award for his support of UWSP's athletic program both as a fan and as an administrator.

The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, Jong I stood
And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and II took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Chancellor's Medallion and the UWSP Ceremonial Mace
The Chancellor's Medallion and the UWSP Ceremonial Mace were both hand-crafted by former Art Professor Henry Runke. The medallion was cast in a 14K yellow gold pendant in 1968 and contains a purple amethyst to represent the school colors. The four sectioned areas terminating near the center symbolize the four colleges of the university and terminate as prongs for the gem. The mace, carried by the grand marshal of academic processions, was completed in 1976 and has a square base on which important dates in the school's history are recorded. The most prominent feature is the mace head which is a miniature of the cupola on Old Main, the school's symbol. The inside of the mace also includes a purple amethyst.
