( 'hestrr L. l{Ta nsr He is, in his 01111 ll'Ords, "just plain Chet" -local fann boy and later carpenter turned publisher " ·ho put his homet01111 of Iola, \Nisconsin, on the ll'orld publishing map. In 1952, Chet founded Krause Publications by producing a single-page introductory issue of Numismatic NeH"s on the dining room table of his parents' home. In the ensuing decades, his modest start grell' into the internationally known, multimillion-dollar publishing firm that Krause Publications is today.

Chet has been active in his community over the years: as a member of the Iola Board ofTmstces for eight years , a member of the First State Bank of Iola Board of Directors for 12 years, along with many civic group and project affiliations. In 1972, he was the driving force behind the founding of the Iola Old Car Show and Swap Meet, which has grown to become the largest old car show in the mid west and one of the largest in the nation. All proceeds from the show benefit local civic groups.

Chet's love of coin collecting led to his foray into publishing, and he remains a fixture in 1mmy

of the hobby areas served by Krause Publications. Among his many hobby-related all'ar<ls is the American Numismatic Association's highest honor, the Fan-an Zerbe Memorial A11-;1.rd. He is also a member of the ANA's Hall of Fame and in August 1999 received the ANA Numismatist of the Year Award. In 1995, he received The Meguiar's Award as the Collector Car Hobby's Person of the Year. In recent years, his collector's passion has expanded to include World War II Army vehicles and equipment of the type used by the anti-aircraft battalion in which Chet served.

His hobby and business interests have been profiled in USA Today, Nat.ion's Business, Entrepreneur, major Wisconsin daily newspapers, and on the sy11dicatecl television show Motorn·eek. In 1990, he was named Wisconsin Small Business Person of the Y car. He ser.1ed as a member of the National Advisory Council of the Marshfield Clinic from 1991 to 1996, after which he was appointed an emeritus member. He has been an actively involved supporter of Rawhide Boys Ranch for troubled youth.

Chet's commitment to his community and employees \\'as exemplified in 1998, when he created an Employee Stock Ownership Plan to transfer 01111ership of Krause Publication from the Krause family to the company's employees. The moYe pr01·ided for local ownership and Krause Publication's continued presence in Iola. Though now retired from the daily duties of management, Chet maintains an office at the company's satellite building ll'hich houses a portion of his military vehicle collections. He still visits the main office to contribute his experience and expertise to the company's operations, to work on his latest hobby project, and to visit and joke with the company's cun-ent 01111ers - its employees. T o each of them, he is still "just plain Chet".

The Chancellor's Medallion and the UWSP Ceremonial Mace were both hand-crafted by former Art Professor H em)· Runke. The medallion was cast in a 14K yello\\' gold pendant in 1968 and contains a purple amethyst to represent the school colors. The four sectioned areas tenninating near the center symbolize the four colleges of the university and tenninate as prongs for the gem. T he mace, canied by the grand marshal of academic processions, was completed in 1976 and has a square base on \\foch important dates in the schools' history are recorded. The most prominent feature is the mace head which is a miniature of the cupola on Old Main, the school's Sjmbol. The inside of the mace also includes a purple amethyst.
