The celebration has begun sorors!  Our beloved Sorority is 100 years old and we are celebrating in grand style.  Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. made history by participating in the 2013 Rose Bowl Parade.  Delta is the first African-American Greek lettered organization to have a float in the parade!   We

showed up and showed out for Media Day in New York City.  Then we went back to our Sorority’s beginning in Washington, D.C. and celebrated our Centennial Founders Day Weekend.  Now we are preparing to meet at our National Convention in Washington, DC, in July.

Yet, there is still work to do until we meet in July.  Until then continue to stay involved in your local chapters.  The expectation is that all of us will continue to support our chapter’s programs and initiatives and to be present at monthly meetings. Sorors, we are the Mighty Midwest and in this, our Centennial Year, I want to continue to see our good work in action.  Thank you for all of your hard work and thank you for your support.  Finally, thank you for keeping in mind that in the Midwest we have a charge to keep: From the Heart We Lead, We Serve and We Empower.

With Delta Love and Mine,Regina R. HarperRegional Director

Greetings Sorors of the Mighty Midwest Region!

We made it!!! Happy Centennial Sorors! As many people have already stated, THIS IS THE YEAR OF DELTA! How blessed are we to be a part of this glorious celebration? It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces during the Founders Day Celebration in Washington D.C., and I know we are all looking forward to the various Centennial events to come.

For this new year, make a declaration over your life. Declare that God has a great plan ahead. He is guiding your steps and will work every detail to your advantage. As God has continually guided Delta Sigma Theta through the past one hundred years, he will direct our path for this next century. With faith in God, there is no limit to the things we can accomplish.

I declare we will excel in academic excellence, be a source of inspiration on our campuses and in our communities, and love one another just as we love ourselves.

May this year be one of prosperity and increase as we continue to hold fast to the principles established by 22 amazing and forward-thinking college students on the campus of Howard University in 1913.

For many years dentists have observed that conditions of the mouth are directly related to illnesses in the rest of the body. A person with diabetes is two times more likely to develop gum disease and other oral infections that can affect your overall health.

What is gum disease?

The technical name for gum disease is periodontitis, which means inflammation of the structures that surround the teeth. Periodontitis is caused by plaque, a colorless film of bacteria that forms on the teeth. When plaque mixes with food it can cause the gums to become irritated, tender and swollen. If not removed daily, plaque hardens to form tartar around the necks of the teeth that can only be removed by a dental professional. In advanced stages of gum disease, the gums become infected, bone is eroded, and teeth loosen and eventually fall out or must be removed.

What are the signs of gum disease?

Gums that bleed when you brush or floss your teeth (early sign)

Red, puffy, swollen tender gums Gums that recede or have pulled away from your

teeth Pus between your teeth when you apply pressure Constant bad breath that won’t go away with

brushing Pain when chewing

How is diabetes related to gum disease? Diabetes makes the body more susceptible to bacterial infection, so people with diabetes have a decreased ability to fight germs that invade the gums. If blood glucose levels are poorly controlled and dental surgery is required, the diabetic patient will heal more slowly and increase the chance of infection after surgery.Other oral problems associated to diabetes include thrush (an infection caused by a fungus that grows in the mouth) and dry mouth. Consequences of dry mouth are mouth soreness, ulcers, and an increased incidence of cavities.

How can I help prevent dental problems associated with diabetes?

Control your blood glucose level. Brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day,

especially before going to bed. Avoid smoking and if you wear dentures, remove

and clean them daily. For dry mouth sufferers, drink more fluids or try

sugar-free chewing gum to help keep a constant flow of saliva in the mouth.

Make regular dental checkups and inform your dentist of any changes you have noticed with your general or dental health.

Keeping your teeth and mouth healthy requires a team effort. A good diet, adequate exercise, and sufficient rest are all very important in maintaining a healthy life style. Good overall health starts with paying attention to your body along with regular dental visits --- together we can create that healthy smile that will last a lifetime!

One of the main events was the ‘DST Debate Watch Party.’ The Social Action Committee teamed up with Butler University, Butler University’s Black Student Union and Radio One to host the event. It attracted 170 voters who packed a lecture hall on campus to view the second Presidential Debate.

Before the Debate, Radio One’s 1310 The Light radio personality, Amos Brown, talked to the audience about how a town hall debate works, what to look for, and how to understand a candidate’s answers. During the actual debate Brown continued to update the audience on debate topics that were trending on Twitter.

The audience consisted of voters of all backgrounds, ages and socio-economic groups. This is just one example of how sorors in red are making a difference in our local community. 3-2-1 Action! Social Action that is.

The chapter focused on children in the community as well, hosting the Harvest Party and participating in Christmas in the Lion’s Den. Each event provided a fun and safe environment for the participants.

Over all it’s been a productive chapter year thus far. The South Bend Alumnae Chapter continues to look for new opportunities to serve, and strive to uphold the legacy of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Inc.

ANN ARBOR ALUMNAE CHAPTER

Celebrates “Delta Through the Decades”

Ann Arbor Alumnae Chapter celebrated its glorious Golden Anniversary this winter. The chapter’s

anniversary luncheon was highlighted by the keynote address given to a packed audience by our 24th National

President, Soror Cynthia M.A. Butler McIntyre. Ann Arbor Alumnae Chapter was chartered on

November 17, 1962, and the Golden Anniversary celebration began with a Round Up of more than 100 members of the chapter who gathered for "Delta through the Decades," a program that highlighted local and national history. Sorors in attendance enjoyed fun, fellowship, and a stroll down memory lane.

A feature wall of chapter members’ baby pictures created quite a buzz as members attempted to identify sorors in photographs depicting them in their

early years. The chapter recognized members with 25 and 50 years of service in Delta. The exhibit table featured paraphernalia dating back to 1946. Another program highlight was the lively Delta Quizbowl competition, with teams of Crimson and Cream testing their knowledge of Delta Jeopardy-style.

DETROIT ALUMNAE CHAPTERAnswering the call to “Do the Work”

Soror Cynthia M.A. Butler-McIntyre, 24th National President, spoke at DAC’s Founders Day celebration at the beginning of the calendar year and she challenged sorors to “do the work,” and that they have:

DAC welcomed 112 new members on December 16th – each dedicated to adding their time, talent and resources to serving the community.

In December, the Homeless Committee joined in partnership with the Brightmoor Community Center to provide Christmas Angel gifts to more than 200 children.

25 sorors visited 18 Detroit Public Schools to speak to classes from kindergarten to 12th grade as part of DAC’s Social Action initiatives. Chapter members promoted “Education Is a Civil Right Participation Day” that included mentoring, discussing African-American role models, and encouraging students to apply for the chapter’s scholarships.

EMBODI is also continuing the call to educate and motivate youth. The program includes a series of workshops for boys who have been in the program for several months. The workshops feature speakers, including local politicians, business owners and media professionals, who offer information

on entrepreneurship and being successful in the world of sports.

Promoting the theme, “Love for Our Veterans,” 50 sorors who serve on the homeless committee donated food and decorations, and then helped prepare and serve dinner to nearly 150 veterans on Valentine’s Day. The newly renovated Piquette Square houses veterans from ages 26-82 and provides support services, including job counseling, fighting substance abuse, and more.

PONTIAC ALUMNAE CHAPTER

Voting for Citizen Participation

Because they believe that an informed voter is an empowered voter, the Pontiac Alumnae Chapter’s Social Action Committee took action. On the Sunday before the November election, members of PAC fanned out to six area churches, touching hundreds of registered voters. After morning services, PAC members shared nonpartisan voter information, including the Michigan voter rights and responsibilities voter guides provided by the League of Women Voters, and sample ballots.

The goal was to remind registered voters of their rights and duties, and to assist citizens in making an informed vote on Election Day.

Pontiac citizens expressed gratitude for the information given on the multiple proposal initiatives presented on the Michigan ballot, saying it helped provide clarity on issues and helped them feel more confident at the polls.

SOUTHFIELD ALUMNAE CHAPTER

Round Up with Fun and Fortitude

“Imagine more…The Road to Centennial,” was the interactive, educational and fun Round Up attended by more than 200 SAC members and guest sorors, held at the city’s Westin Hotel. “Delta Bingo” provided an avenue for sorors to learn about each other.

Bingo cards contained Delta-related information as sorors interacted to win a prize. “One Hundred Years of Service…Our History is Our Story” was a super charades. Each table was assigned a decade of Delta - with one table assigned the next 100 years. Significant events were then acted out, showcasing unique skits, dances, songs, rap and poetry. Then there were the Delta milestones, with 17 sorors celebrating 25 years and an honored 50 year soror. They dance/walked a red carpet to the beat of “Celebration!” and “Golden” respectively, then shared their favorite Delta moments. During announcements, a surprise flash mob danced to “Run the World (Girls)” electrifying the audience. The tempo shifted as “I’m Every Woman” played and more sorors joined the dancers - these with smooth, elegant moves, ending posed as Fortitude.

Magnificent MINNESOTA

MINNEAPOLIS - ST. PAULALUMNAE CHAPTER

The great state of Minnesota and the Minneapolis - St. Paul Alumnae Chapter kicked off the holiday season with their participation in a community Thanksgiving BINGO night, where over 100 families from North Minneapolis participated in a BINGO night to win turkeys and sides for their Thanksgiving dinners. Through a partnership with EJ Henderson of the Minnesota Vikings, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Alumnae Chapter gifted families with the opportunity to have a Thanksgiving dinner with their families—giving many something of which to be thankful. In an effort to reclaim sorors, on the 13th of every month, inactive sorors receive postcards from the Minneapolis-St. Paul Alumnae Chapter about chapter meetings and upcoming events. Continuing in that same spirit, sorors gathered from all over the state to partake in the joy of the Minnesota State Founders Day Weekend hosted in Bloomington, MN from Friday, January 13-Sunday, January 15, 2012, where our very own National Secretary, Beverly Smith, was the Founders Day keynote speaker. DAYTON ALUMNAE CHAPTERPutting Financial Pieces Together

On Saturday, October 20, 2012, the Financial Fortitude Committee of Dayton Alumnae Chapter hosted a workshop for high school students, and their parents, entitled, “College and Money: Putting the Pieces Together.” Sorors Pamela Simmons, Theata Lambert-Tennon and Donna Harrison developed a program that shared information on traditional financial aid, budgeting, handling credit and debit cards, and interviewing for on/off campus employment. In addition, a panel of recent graduates provided real-world input on the topics discussed.

“I enjoyed the workshop” said one participant. “At first, I didn’t want to go and was very upset because I just wanted to chill today. But hearing these facts and stories from people relatively close to me has opened my eyes. I had a great time and I’m very thankful the Dayton Alumnae Chapter took the time to do this for me as well as the other children who showed up.”

Partners With Others to Educate and Combat the Spread of HIV/AIDS

Seven Cincinnati-area churches have signed on to one of the newest endeavors to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS in the African-America community. Corinthian Baptist Church, Gaines United Methodist Church, Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church, New Prospect Baptist Church, St Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Turning Point Church of Zion and Zion Global Ministries will partner resources for outreach

efforts in their respective communities. “It’s key to have the faith-based community involved

in this program,” says Chandra Mathews- Smith, President of the Cincinnati Queen City Alumnae (CQCA) Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

The Cincinnati Queen City Alumnae Chapter is heavily invested in this initiative. In the spring 2012, the chapter entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with multiple organizations: IV-CHARIS, University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine and HIV Early Intervention Program, and the AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC).

“For years, our chapter has lead programming centered on HIV/AIDS awareness. I’m pleased that so many organizations are collaborating. Together, we can have an even more substantial impact,” says Chapter President Mathews-Smith.

WILBERFORCE ALUMNAE

Centennial Kick-Off

Wilberforce Alumnae Chapter launched its yearlong centennial celebration by taking a nostalgic look back at the beginning era of our chapter on the grounds of Wilberforce University. Our founders, who were strong women of color, skillfully crafted a cohesive national organization with goals to enhance the quality of life in our communities. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on the campus of Howard University (Alpha Chapter). The second chapter, Beta Chapter, was established at Wilberforce University.

Two sorors who attended Wilberforce University, Esther Williams and Lillie Massie, graciously served as

The Zeta Alpha Chapter hosted a program for Diabetes Awareness that focused on risk assessment, preventative measures and understanding Diabetes. The program was held on November 28, 2012, at the University of Akron. The program was part discussion and part physical activity.

The discussion was led by Eric Patrick, a Senior Pharmaceutical Sales Representative. Patrick quizzed the audience on diabetes then talked about the different types of diabetes, the importance of watching what you eat and overall physical health.

After the discussion, the African Student Association led the group in African Zumba. It began with a performance then a brief dance lesson. Finally, the participants enjoyed a fun, yet vigorous, workout.

ZETA CHAPTERThe Set Up:

It’s Okay to Say No

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Zeta Chapter, hosted, ‘The Set Up’ as one of its fall programs this sorority year. As a part of the chapter’s focus on Educational Development, part of the sorority’s Five-Point Thrust program, the program shared information on

sexual assault with the University of Cincinnati campus.

University officials say one in four girls, between the ages of 16-24, will be sexually assaulted. They also say that number could be higher due to unreported cases. Often victims of sexual assault blame themselves or are labeled by the community. In an effort to empower women on

campus, Zeta chapter partnered with the UC organization, R.E.C.L.A.I.M, which specializes in anonymous counseling.

A member of R.E.C.L.A.I.M. shared her personal story of surviving a sexual assault. Afterwards, students were able to participate in mock situations to practice how to protect themselves.

MADISON ALUMNAE CHAPTER

Celebrates 35 Wonderful Years

The Madison Alumnae Chapter is celebrating thirty-five years of serving the Madison, Wisconsin, community. One of its first activities was a pontoon boat ride across the city’s beautiful Lake Monona. Approximately thirty-five sorors, including three charter members, Delta Dears, seasoned sorors, as well as new initiates, gathered to commemorate the occasion. The evening was filled with food,

fellowship, fun and the story of the chapter’s inception. A story shared by the charter members present. In the summer of 1977, twenty-two women came together to educate Madison’s minority community on political, educational, cultural, economic and social concerns. Thirty-five years later, the legacy established by our sorority’s twenty-two founders, carried on by the chapter’s twenty-two charter members, is still reverberating in the Madison Community.Already during this historic 2012-2013 sorority year, the Madison Alumnae Chapter has participated in the community’s Black Women’s Expo, registered voters and donated goods to the Elizabeth House (a home for single, pregnant women in crisis).

MILWAUKEE ALUMNAE CHAPTER MAC Aids Women in Reclaiming Their

Lives and Health

African-American women age 20 and older represent 13 percent of the population in the United States. Sadly, health officials say, they account for 20 percent of all diabetes cases. It’s a lifelong condition that can be treated, but can also get worse if not addressed. However, for women dealing with abuse, health is often not a priority.

The center provides shelter and access to resources for women who are fleeing domestic violence. Regular health checks can help a woman keep track of her health but guests at the Milwaukee Women’s Center often do not have a primary care physician.

Soror Rayven Gordon shared a personal message about diabetes. Both of her grandmothers were diabetic and one of her line sisters has diabetes. Gordon encouraged the women to put themselves first.

“As women, we always put the needs of others before us,” said Soror Gordon. She also encouraged them to be active in monitoring their diet and to exercise regularly. After the presentation, Deltas gave out “hand prints” with facts and statistics related to African-American
