Marc ChagallFor my timeline about the work of Marc Chagall I really wanted to emphasize the develop-ment of his style and use of color over his lifetime. I explored many options, but because of the unique quality of his work I found it dicult to categorize most of Chagall's paintings. This aspect prohibited me from following a pattern like my rst sketch, where I would have divided the images by artistic movement. Although Chagall was part of many movements, his style was truly his own. I also found it necessary to establish a method for narrowing down the selection of paintings to use. I found that a theme of everyday life mixed with a bit of fantasy appeared to be quite prominent in his work and it provided very vibrant examples of Chagall's use of color and various techniques.

In order to exemplify the boldness of his work and use of color and the development of his understanding and style I found that it was important to keep the surrounding area fairly simple. In this way, the eye is simply drawn towards the images of the paintings, exploring a path through Chagall's artistic life. I committed to a plain white background and straightfor-ward, but impactful black typography to accomplish this simplicity. In this design, the eye is free to meditate on the work of Marc Chagall over his almost 80 year career.

Letters Gothis Std: Used for subheading. I liked the more spread out font because it needed to cover the same amount of space as the main header, but still be a very legible

Impact: Used for the main header - Name and life dates. I wanted something very bold, but clear.

Myriad Pro: Used for Titles and Years of Artwork. (These are small and therefore needed a very clear, basic font)

Design Color Palette:

Extra color was not used in order to place emphasis on the color used in Chagall’s work.

Marc Chagall Color Palette (Compound): Variations of this color palette can be found throughout the works used to explore Chagall’s manipulation of color.
