Abstracts

Tri service radiology updateCPO Catherine Bean

The aim of the presentation is to provide an overview of the current role of a military radiographer. I will talk about the peacetime and operational role, in particular the radiographer’s role on contingent operations. I will discuss the different medical treatment facilities, their roles and environments in which they can deploy, and will describe the technological advances with regard to deployed radiology equipment, highlighting some of the imaging challenges military radiographers face.

Military trauma imaging; a lesson in the fundamentalsLieutenant Colonel Mark Ballard RAMC

The last two decades of conflict in the Middle East have come hand in hand with a surge in expertise in managing the wounds of war. Methods of injury management have advanced considerably and imaging now plays a central role in the assessment and treatment planning of the battlefield casualty.

Lieutenant Colonel Ballard will discuss the application of imaging in the patient pathway as applied within the field hospital at Camp Bastion in the Helmand province of Afghanistan. He will outline key points of trauma CT technique and demonstrate that the progression in the role and capability of imaging is underpinned by fundamental basics that translate directly to work at home in the NHS.

Post-mortem imaging – the role of CT in forensic and sudden death investigationsLieutenant Colonel Iain Gibb

The aim of this presentation is to introduce the concept of post-mortem comput-ed tomography (CT) scanning in the investigation of traumatic deaths. I will dis-cuss development of the techniques used, pitfalls and benefits of the technique compared with the traditional open post-mortem imaging. I will also discuss the wider role of CT in the investigation of sudden death and future potential roles in the wider community.
