2. ENSEMBLE CONCEPTSby Eddie Green, John Benzer and David Bertman

Develops exemplary ensemble musicianship with exercises specifically geared forbuilding true ensemble sound. Every aspect of ensemble playing is introducedindividually, in developmental order, then combined for more advanced practice.

• Written as a guided practice routine for full ensembles, students will learn to purposefully and consistently practice each skill until proficiency is achieved

• Each exercise is designed to develop an “ensemble concept” using specificStudent Goals and Director Reminders

• “From the Authors” section provides directors with additional information on howto get the most out of the individual exercises and the entire series

Student Goals/Director Reminders

Each exercise focuses on a specific ensemble concept and includes 6-12 focus areas(“Student Goals”) that direct players in how to achieve the concept. The goals can bevaried at each rehearsal to develop all aspects of the concept being learned. TheConductor Book includes additional objectives (“Director Reminders”) as well as theprinted Student Goals.

For the Percussion Section

Extensive additional percussion pedagogy allows students to develop skills and tech-niques at advancing levels while winds/brass continue to focus on daily goals. Thepercussion texts also serve as a valuable teacher/student resource, with extensiveinformation on section organization, instrument basics, stick/mallet selection, andpercussion-specific musical concepts.
