BECKENDORFF jUNiOR HIGH BANDINSTRUMENT AND SUPPLIES LIST 20!6-2017
Notes:A metronome and a folding wbe music stand are required for home practice. A student cannot develop good instrumental
skills without these supplies for daily practice!
It is preferable for clarinet and aho saxophone students to buy reeds by the box as the reeds do break down over time and will
have to be repIaced periodically. These students should always have a minimum of 4 playabie reeds in their reed guard.
Oboe and bassoon students should always have 3 or more.playable reeds in the5: reed case. Reeds take a few days to a week to"break in". Waiting until a student is down tO the Iast reed or two will severely limit success. Reeds can last 2 to 3 weeks if
cared for properly. Rest assured the students will be thoroughly instructed in this area.
In my opirffon, when purchasing inst_mment care supplies consumers should be wary ofpre-packaged "Care Kits". The
directors have many years of experience and have listed the brands of supplies that have proven to hold up over time for our
students. While these brands are certainly not the only quality products on the market (there are far too many of those to list
on this sheet), quaiity and price point are what we have factored in to come up with our list.
Students will be instructed when to bring theD instrument and supplies to school - - generally the first full -week of school. Weuse the first several days to review fundamentals without instruments.
We generally recommend that students DO NOT receive their instrument before school begins in August! Many
poor habits can be difÿcult to break if a student begins without proper instruction. Classes actuary go faster if all students
start from tlae same point rather than taking time to back up and conrect poor fundamentals. We DO recommend that
parents reserrze the instrument early however. Local music companies wi!l set you up with 'a rental package for next year
now, place the instrument on hold for you over the summer, and deliveÿ the instruments to school by the first week of school
(compiete with all needed accessories, labded with the students name on the case - ready to go). Waiting until August to setup the rental package can be tnicky, as there is often a "run" on the stores at the last minute.
\Vhen school stares we do tend to keep ali instruments at Beckendorff the first few weeks or so until al! students have
mastered the fundamentals needed to produce a good sound. When this is mastered to a certain level, the students are allowed
to take their instruments home for daffy pracice.
We iook forward to your child becoming a member of the BeckendorffBear Band. If you have any questions, please do nothesitate to call or email.
