From Your Pastor

Grounded in the Faith

But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you

have. But do this with gentleness and respect. 1 Peter 3:15

This Sunday we are starting a series related to the movie God’s Not

Dead. In the movie, Josh Wheaton, a freshman in college, enrolls in a phi-

losophy class taught by a rather dictatorial professor. The professor de-

mands that all his students sign a declaration that “God is dead” in order to

pass the class. Josh refuses and is required to defend his position in front

of the class. If he cannot prove that God is alive, he flunks the class.

Josh accepts the challenge.

In recent years there has been a disturbing trend of young people let-

ting go of their faith once they leave high school and go to college. A

major contributing factor is that many are not grounded in their faith.

The more we study our faith and the certainty of the Scriptures the more

confidence we can have in the God in whom we trust. I am hoping this

series will challenge us all to go deeper in our faith and gain confidence in

both defending and sharing our faith. I hope you will join us for the dis-

cussions on Sunday evenings as we embrace the evidence, marvel at the de-

sign, understand God’s purpose, get prepared, and share the message.

Below is the schedule of the Sunday morning sermon topics:

Week 1 (August 10th) we will look at John 6:33 and consider “Where is God

when life fails?” Many people walk away from their faith when faced with

difficulties in life.

Week 2 (August 17th) we will look at Romans 1:20 and answer the question,

“Is Our Faith Blind?”

Week 3 we will look at 1 Peter 3:15 and look at how we can deal with

“Skepticism” to Christianity.

Week 4 we will look at Proverbs 18:24 and be challenged to take a stand

for our faith.

If you haven’t seen the “God’s Not Dead” movie we invite you to come

out this Friday or Saturday evening at 7:00 PM and watch it. This would be

an excellent opportunity to invite somebody who is skeptical about Christi-

anity. Let’s pray that God will use this series in a special way.

ATTENTION

KINGDOM KIDS WORKERS NEEDED: Following our meeting this past Sunday Night, one

thing was quite evident. We need more volunteers! If you would be willing to help drive or

monitor a bus, monitor the kids while they eat(6-6:30pm), or monitor them while they wait to

be dismissed. We simply need more bodies. Hopefully we will have several folks volunteer to

help in these areas. Contact Laura Hatmaker, if you have any questions.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT COOKS: If you are helping with meals, or would like to help with

Wednesday evening meals, we will have a meeting next Wed. (Aug. 13th) at 5:45 to make

plans for this coming year. We will meet in the FLC.

MIDDLE SCHOOL HELPERS NEEDED: Beginning September 3rd, Michael and Vonda

Anderson will be teaching the Jr. High and could use some adult helpers as they will be meet-

ing in the big upstairs room in the FLC.

CHOIR PRACTICE: Now is a good time to join the choir as practices will resume on Wednesday, August 13th after service.

MISSION SUPPORT: Please continue to submit your pledges to help support the Chervens and Amanda Hubler. There are boards up front with the needs for both the Chervens & Amanda.

LOVE LOUD Projects: If you know somebody who needs some home repair, landscape as-sistance, etc. there are some applications available on the front table.

GIVING: You can now set-up online giving through our Lanbaptist.org website. You can schedule automatic giving via your bank account. For more information go to Resources at www.lanbaptist.org

DVDs & CDs: We have DVDs and CDs available for our services. Please see Chris Woolums (sound area) if you would like one. Donations welcomed.

FALL REACH SEMESTER: KICK-OFF We will begin our Fall REACH se-

mester on Monday, August 11th

at 6:00 PM. We invite all who are inter-

ested in being on a REACH team to join us that evening at 6:00 PM.

MAKING DISCIPLES… (Questions kids ask)

Question: Will God and Jesus keep me safe from Satan’s fallen angels?

Answer: For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor princi-palities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39). If does seem like Satan and his angels might be able to do us harm, doesn’t it? And the Bible says that the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for us! We are told to fee from the devil—and we should do that when we know we are being tempted to do wrong things. Also, God promises His children, those who believe and trust in Jesus and live for Him, that He will never leave us. God’s Word makes it clear in Romans 8 that when we trust in Christ, He is with us for eternity and no one can take that away from us. He is our helper and we should not fear! Sometimes, even though you know all of this is true, you still wonder, “What can I do when I still don’t feel safe?” Well, bad things still happen on this earth, and God knew we might feel unsafe and scared. The Bible helps us with this, too! It tells us we must be prepared. We must put on the armor of God! No, it is not real armor, but something even better! It is the truth of His Word. Reading the Bible and having faith that what it says is true will keep us prepared for anything that happens here on earth. Because we will know that as His children, nothing will ever separate us from His love and one day we will spend all of eternity with Him in a perfect world.
