Mr Robin Swann, the North Antrim

Ulster Unionist Party Assem-

bly and Chairman of the

Stormont Committee

for Employment

and Learning, has

called on the Mid

and East Antrim

Council “to

make it a matter

of community

priority to make

the play park in

Kells and Connor

100 per cent safe

for parents and

children alike”.

Assemblyman Swann

has already contacted the Mid

and East Antrim Council Chief Executive

concerning “the lack of progress in devel-

oping children’s play facilities in my home

village of Kells and Connor”.

Mr Swann added: “I have been contacted

by a number of parents who no longer

take their children to the play park at the

Community Centre due to the poor

and dangerous condition of

some of the equipment.

The Kells and Connor

Community Im-

provement Asso-

ciation has also

been working

diligently on

this issue.

“There is a

large degree of

frustration in the

villages as much

was promised by

the former Ballyme-

na Council in way of

improvements and many

in the villages signed a peti-

tion asking the council to improve their

facilities, but nothing has happened?

“They now want to see the new Mid

and East Council act rather than commis-

sion further reports,” said Assemblyman

Swann.

SWANN CALLS FOR ‘URGENT ACTION’ ON KELLS PLAY PARK

Paul Frew DUP MLA for North Antrim is calling

for a concentration on and a joined up approach

to tackling Anti-Social Behaviour in a bid to stop

repeat offenders from disturbing other residents

in the area. He has also facilitated meetings with

community groups and officials from Council , Environmental Health , PSNI & Housing Executive

over the past few months to try and iron out issues

that officials have in dealing with this issue. Mr Frew voiced his concern on the matter, “I have

been contacted by a number of constituents in

North Antrim over the years to report a series of

complaints associated with Anti-Social behaviour.

In a lot of cases the nuisance continues on for

months with no sign of resolution. I blame the

irresponsible and unreasonable people who cause

the nuisance ofcourse but victims of this crime look

to officials to assist them to end their nightmare . Bodies with responsibility on Anti social

behaviour are PSNI , Housing Executive, Council

& environmental Health and whilst they always

receive a sympathetic ear the anti social behaviour

seems to continue unabated. It is true that some

may cause nuisance without knowing and when

they are informed they stop but unreasonable

people will carry on . This is when we really need

our officials to step up and cause a halt to the activities.

However due to certain councils not adopting

the terms of the Noise Act (1996), fixed penalties are not being served to act on and resolve these

complaints.”

The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act

(NI, 2011)came into operation in 2012, making

amendments to the Noise Act to enable district

councils to determine the level of fixed penalty notices. Belfast City Council has been the only

council so far to issue fixed penalty notices.Mr Frew explained, “If Belfast City Council are able

to issue fixed penalty notices under The Noise Act then so should other councils in other areas

especially in light of the fact our Councils are much

larger now post RPA and economy’s of scale come

into play .Ant-Social Behaviour is something that

affects numerous people in my constituency of

North Antrim but cannot be reduced if there are

no actions taken on those who are repeatedly

offending. It is awful for those who are minding

their own business in a built-up area to be

constantly disturbed by tenants who cannot seem

to abide by agreed tenant responsibilities.”

Mr Frew concluded, “What we don’t want to see

are tenants being forced to move elsewhere due

to an inability to deal with certain neighbours who

are continually getting away with causing offence

in the neighbourhood. I am awaiting a progress

report from all the officials we have met and i will be requesting a follow up meeting fairly soon to

ensure sufficient pressure is applied on all the agencies involved . I will also give a commitment

that I will work will all players to bring to an end

this blight on our society.”

FREW REQUESTS AN

ORCHESTRATEDEFFORT TO END ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

Mr Robin Swann, the North Antrim Ulster

Unionist Party Assemblyman and Chairman

of the Stormont Employment and Learning

Committee, has called on the Executive to

use its influence in the British Irish bodies to promote golfing tourism in the constituency. Assemblyman Swann, who is also

UUP Chief Whip and North Antrim

UUP Chairman, made his appeal in the

aftermath of the success of this year’s recent

prestigious Irish Open Golf Championship. Mr Swann added: “The golfing successes of Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Graeme

McDowell in various Opens as well as the

longer term success of our Ulster-born

golfers as a whole have given us the

opportunity to market Northern Ireland golf

on a global stage. “Royal Portrush has already become a

world-renown venue and is another major

opportunity to boost both the tourism

industry and North Coast economy. “We need to continue targeting areas of

huge potential golfing growth such as other parts of the United Kingdom, the United

States, Sweden and Germany, from where

a large number of visitors already come to

Northern Ireland. “The Stormont Executive needs to urgently

use the new era of cross-border co-operation

to tap into this marketing goldmine and

promote Ulster golf as a whole, as well as

the fantastic courses which we already have

in North Antrim. “There is an already busy schedule of year-

round golf promotions, many of which take

place in our constituency and which would

benefit from the Irish Open’s excellent international reputation. “With this terrific product being offered across our constituency, our Stormont

Executive needs to ensure that this is

marketed effectively worldwide, and I urge

our Executive to equally ensure that its cash

and forward-thinking are applied to our

North Antrim courses. “I also encourage the Executive to strongly

consider promoting golf as part of the

sporting curriculum in as many Northern

Ireland primary and secondary schools,

further education colleges and universities. “The successes in past years of our

champions have boosted the image of the

sport and it is time to maximise that interest

for the benefit of our young people. “The Executive should also be looking

at ways in which partnerships between

golf clubs and schools and colleges can be

developed,” said Assemblyman Swann.

SWANN URGES EXECUTIVE TO BOOST GOLF TOURISM

The Assembly has passed a DUP amendment

to the Justice Bill which will increase access by

the public to information relating to previous

convictions of sexual or violent offenders in

order to protect children. The amendment which has been tabled by DUP North Antrim

MLA Paul Frew and will allow a child’s carers

to make application for the disclosure of

information about an individual where there

are concerns that a child could be at risk. It draws on similar arrangements in England,

Scotland and Wales which are known as

‘Sarah’s Law’ but will allow disclosure of

information about a wider range of offences

than is available in Great Britain. The proposal will mean that guidance to

agencies on assessing and managing risks

to the public must contain arrangements for

the consideration of disclosure of relevant

previous convictions of any specified sexual or violent offender where it is necessary to

protect a child from serious harm by the

offender.Commenting on the proposal North Antrim

MLA Paul Frew said, ‘This is an amendment

born out of an attempt to improve child

protection arrangements. It goes beyond that

available in Great Britain in that parents there

only receive information about previous child

sexual offences. This amendment increase access to information about all qualified offences which would include sexual offences

as well as convictions for offences such as

domestic violence where this is necessary to

protect the public. It is vital that the public have confidence in the arrangements that are in place to keep our

children safe and I believe that this increased

access to information can help to build that

confidence. Unfortunately there will always be those who harm children who have no

previous convictions, but this amendment

represents a significant step forward from the current ‘one-way’ flow of information where parents are unable to request information

about an individual who may be of concern. I assist constituents on a daily basis ,

helping up to 100 families every week ,one

at a time in my various constituency work . This amendment however will be a major

achievement in protecting children from every

part of Northern Ireland by arming parents

and carers with the information they would

require to fully safeguard their family.

People don’t always buy what they need - they buy what they want. Sometimes as the expert you will be right about what they need. But if the customer incorrectly thinks they need something else, you’re still going to fail. So give them what they want.Gary Halbert, the famous copywriter, would ask his students: "If you and I both owned a hamburger stand and we were in a contest to see who could sell the most hamburgers, what advantages would you most like to have on your side to help you win?"Common answers included superior meat, best location, lower prices. Local MLA for North

Antrim Paul Frew has

questioned the Health

Department on what can

be done to maximise

Ballymena’s Health

Services.

The new Ballymena

Health and Care Centre

is scheduled for opening

in Autumn 2015. The establishment will include

accommodation for 6 GP practices as well as a mix

of locally accessible acute, primary and community

care clinics. Added to this facility will be the new

NIAS Ambulance station at Ballee .

Mr Frew commented on the development, “I asked

the Minister to detail what options were available

here to add further services at the site of the new

Ballymena Health Centre. The new building is

something we have needed for a long time and

is an exceptional development which should be

taken full advantage of in terms of Health Care

services.”

Mr Frew said, “The Minister has informed me that

the Northern Health and Social Care Trust has

established a working group to look at the vacated

space and develop options to reuse it considering

thesiteprofileandtheneedtoensuretheequalityof access to services for the resident population.

Many of the services transferring into the new

centre will relocate from

the Braid Valley hospital

or other buildings on

the Braid Valley site.

The £25million Health

and Care centre is the

largest project to date

in Northern Ireland and

is set to accommodate a

range of clinics as well

as 6 General Practitioner Practices, a Children’s

department, Rehabilitation and Diagnostic Services

as well as a Boots Pharmacy. Added to this facility

will be the new NIAS Ambulance station at Ballee

which will become the Northern Divisional HQ .

Theofficeareaswillincludeatrainingroomandstorage rooms to allow restocking of ambulances

and other vehicles. There will be 5 A&E and Rapid

Response Vehicles along with Patient Care Service

vehicles at the new facility. Whilst the garage will

provide enclosed parking for up to 12 ambulances,

rapid response and PCS vehicles .

Mr Frew went on to say, “It is brilliant to see there

will be new facilities coming to Ballymena but I am

pushing the Department of Health on what else

canbebroughttothetabletofurtherbenefitthelocalcommunity.Theproject, duetobefinishedsoon and open in the Autumn, is an excellent

Mr Robin Swann, the North Antrim Ulster Unionist Assembly member, has called on the DUP Health Minister to “ensure that no matter how severe the forthcoming cuts to the health budget, funding would be guaranteed for cardiac services”. Assemblyman Swann, who is UUP Chief Whip and an ardent campaigner for paediatric congenital cardiac facilities, issued his challenge following a written question to the minister. Mr Swann had asked the Minister of Health, Social Services and Public Safety for an update on the progress made on the recommendations of the International Working Group in the review of paediatric congenital cardiac services. Responding to Assemblyman Swann, the health minister said: “The all-island Congenital Heart Disease Network Board has met twice since 1 April 2015. The Board has formed subgroups to plan and implement the phased transfer of surgery and cardiac catheterisation to Dublin from Belfast. “A Northern Ireland Implementation

Subgroup is planning the implementation of proposals put forward by Belfast Trust cardiologists to strengthen the Northern Ireland hub in the all-island network. The first fortnightly session for cardiac catheterisations for Northern Ireland patients started in Dublin on 30 April. “Two babies from Northern Ireland were recently delivered at the Coombe Hospital in Dublin who were fetally diagnosed in Belfast with heart conditions and had their procedures carried out in Dublin before transfer to Belfast. “Recruitment for an additional Family Liaison Nurse is underway and recruitment for a Network Manager will begin this month. Good progress is therefore being made with implementing the International Working Group’s recommendations. “However, we remain reliant on the majority of elective procedures being carried out by specialist heart centres in England until sufficient capacity has been developed in Dublin to accommodate Northern Ireland patients,” the health minister told Assemblyman Swann.

SWANN KEEPS UP CAMPAIGN FOR CARDIAC SERVICESPaul Frew DUP MLA for North Antrim and member of the ETI Committee in theAssembly knows all to well the issues with Electricity with his experienceas a foreman Electrician. Frew has been concerned for some time now the impact on business and largeemployers with cost of electricity and regulations around energy for theheavy industrial sector in Northern Ireland. Frew stated " Last year through the ETI Committee i was able to advance 3enquiries into the subject of energy . One on security of our electricitysupply , another on connection times and one on cost of energy . I have no doubt that the cost of energy for large employers who are relianton electricity on a daily basis has a massive impact . In North Antrim wehave a very good base when it comes to manufacturing, this sector employsthousands of people ,this has to be protected . Domestically we have average household electricity bills in Northern Ireland but for industry we are one of the

most costly , usually second only toItaly . I believe this has to change . If we lose companies because of highbills it could place hundreds into poverty . If we have high bills we wontbe able to attract manufacturing to Northern Ireland . This is , I believe, one of the biggest issues facing us all in our generation! I have commenced a series of informal meetings with party policy officials and representatives from various groups like CBI NI and Manufacturing NI . I hope to meet also with InvestNI . I have also met with NIE , SONI ( grid system operator in Northern Ireland ) & the Utility Regulator in Northern Ireland Mrs Jenny Piper. I have also met with our new DETI Minister Jonathan Bell and explained to him the importance of tackling this very important issue . I believe we need a robust policy that will apply pressure on all players in a very complicated system to force down the cost of electricity for largeindustry in this country.

Mr Robin Swann, the North Antrim Ulster Unionist Party Assembly and Chairman of the Stormont Committee for Employment and Learning, has praised the start of a road improvement scheme at the A26 Dunsilly Roundabout as “a tremendous boost for road safety in the region”. Assemblyman Swann, who is also UUP Chief Whip, was speaking as his party colleague and Transport Minister Danny Kennedy announced the £207,000 road improvement scheme at the A26 Dunsilly Roundabout, Antrim. Work is expected to be complete by Thursday 2 July. Minister Kennedy said: “This scheme representsasignificantinvestmentintheA26atDunsilly.Itwilldeliverimportantbenefitsfor drivers, increase the life of the road and improve the strength and ride quality of the carriageway.”

The scheme extends to both lanes of the roundabout and

will include reshaping on the Lisnevenagh Road

towards Ballymena. To keep disruption to a minimum the work will be carried out each evening between 7:00 pm and 6:00 am until Thursday

2 July 2015. To help ensure the

safety of drivers and contractors access to and

from the M22 Motorway will be restricted during evening working.

Well signposted diversions will be in place. Mr Swann added: “The Dunsilly Roundabout has become one of the busiest junctions in the region, so it is vitally important that road safety is maintained. “I warmly welcome the start of this significantschemeasatremendousboostforroadsafetyintheregion, asthefirststepofarevision of safety on this entire section of the A26.”

A church-based charity is celebrating three years of rescuing local people from personal debt – a free service literally saving lives. In May 2012, members of Ballymena Baptist Church decided they wanted to do more to help the local community and partnered with UK debt counselling charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP) to open a local branch. Now the team have helped 53 despairing local families and individuals by offering a free, face-to-face and caring service, which gives both hope and a solution.Centre manager Valerie said: “We have been in a lot of homes during these three years and learned about some very sad situations. Debt can be so destructive, making people feel so desperate, scared to go out or even open the curtains. “Relationships come under a lot of stress and people worry about keeping their home

and providing for their families. “However, we’ve also seen that however terrible something appears, there is always a solution and the benefit of the way CAP works is that it is really thorough, taking someone step by step to becoming debt free.” Common reasons for debt include low income, relationship breakdown, joblessness, problems with benefits, illness or bereavement. CAP’s service is available to everyone regardless of age, gender, faith or background.

DEBT COUNSELLING CENTRE CELEBRATES THREE YEARSMr Robin Swann, the North Antrim Ulster Unionist Assembly member, has called on the Environment Minister “to come down hard like a ton of bricks on those who dump waste products from illegal fuel laundering”. Assemblyman Swann, who is UUP Chief Whip, issued his challenge following a written question to the minister in which he asked him “whether the Northern Ireland Environmental Agency will seek additional revenue generation through penalties for dumping waste products from illegal fuel laundering”. Responding to Assemblyman Swann, the Environment Minister said: “The Northern Ireland Environment Agency is currently engaging with the Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and Environmental Policy Division to research the possibility of powers that would allow them to recoup additional financial penalties from those found guilty of waste offences associated with fuel laundering. “One of the mechanisms the Northern Ireland Environment Agency has for generating income from waste offences, such as flytipping and the illegal dumping of waste, are Fixed Penalty Notices up to the value of £400, which the Agency can issue under the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997. “However, as Fixed Penalty Notices are of a relatively small monetary value, and allow the

person receiving the notice to discharge any liability relating to the offence on payment of the fine, these are reserved for minor offences, and are not used for offences relating to dumping fuel laundered waste. “For these more serious cases, where there is sufficient evidence to link a person to an offence, an investigative case file will be prepared by the Agency, and submitted to the Public Prosecution Service, and the case pursued through the courts. “Serious Offences will also be subject to a Proceeds of Crime Order for breaches of waste management legislation. “Any confiscation orders are made against the defendant with monies split between the Department of Justice (50%), NIEA (22.5%), PPS (22.5%), and the Court Service (5%),” the Minister told Assemblyman Swann. Mr Swann later added: “It is absolutely essential that our Environment Agency be given all the powers it requires to fully combat, if not eradicate, this disgusting crime of dumping waste products from illegal fuel laundering. “I also call on the Justice and Farming Ministers at Stormont to join forces and produce an action plan which will assist the Agency in whatever ways it needs so that people involved in such dumping are driven out of this illegal activity which poses a significant threat to conservation.”

MAKE SPRING CLEANING EASY WITH A SIMPLE CHECKLIST

EVERY GARDENER NEEDS A SHEDThere are lots of things that a gardener needs, but the two most

important are patience and a shed. Patience will make you a better gardener, but a shed will allow you to make a better garden. The structure does not have to be new or even attractive - it is simply a weatherproof hut in which to store things. Equally, it is a place to meditate and rest from your labours. It can double as a potting shed for seed sowing and propagating by

cuttings. Now that the weather is growing chilly, a warm shed is a welcome refuge from winter, so give the place a once-over, identify what you really need and, if you are very brave, decide what you

should clear out. What every shed needs

My list may differ from yours but there are some must-haves. Top of the list has to be electricity installed by a electrician. A power point will allow leaf blowers, lawn mowers, hedge trimmers and other

power equipment to be operated within cable distance of the shed. Moreover, light and a heater will make life more enjoyable during

cold, dark evenings. But by far the best argument for installing power is the electric kettle. The joy of having a cuppa without having to take off your boots and wash your hands should not be

underestimated.Have a sturdy, waist-high bench or table beside the window. A 15 cm (6in) deep plastic tray with an open front will keep compost where

you want it when potting. A great big 15cm (6in) nail driven into one of the timber corner posts will support wet coats heavy with

secateurs, knife, string and other essentials. It is amazing how many layers of winter clothes gardeners need. None may be fit for a jumble sale but they are familiar and cosy. Now, call me fussy but there has to be a way of storing boots so they are ready when you need them. I favour the wall rack with deep, narrow V-shapes, each of which supports an upside-down boot.

Alternatively, 60cm (2ft) vertical timber dowel rods spaced 15cm (6in) apart and attached to a board will do the same job.An essential piece of furniture is a vermin-proof cupboard or box in which to store seeds. It needs to remain cool but not freezing. If it is strong it may double as a seat.Tools are the curse of the garden shed. They form a heap, fall over and take up every corner. Invest in a tool rack. There are those gardeners who have every conceivable tool in every style. This causes confusion and you end up spending more time sorting than

using. I only use a spade, fork, shovel, two rakes, secateurs, folding hand saw, loppers, a sharpening stone and trowel. I don't have a hoe. In our damp Irish climate, unless you lift and dump the hoed weeds they re-root into the loose soil.A neat trick is to label each position on the tool rack with the tool

that should be in place. That way, if there's a gap, you will know what is missing and can look for it. Otherwise it will eventually turn up rusted and useless.Make space for sturdy shelves where you can store bulbs. Keep them below eye level to make it easy to check routinely for rotting

or diseased bulbs. If the shelves face the window, tubers such as dahlias and begonias may be started into growth in situ.Leave space on a shelf for essential kit such as labels, string, rooting hormone and soil-testing kit, but keep the area small to prevent clutter.Clear out

Now we come to the hard part. If you have had your shed for any length of time it is probably a shambles in need of a serious

de-clutter. Start with the obvious. It is time you realised that short bits of string, elastic bands, faded, empty seed packets, bent nails,

corks and dried up permanent markers never did have and never

will have a use. Broken tools have to go. How many broken, wooden

spade shafts can you keep for pointed dibbers when you have used

the same perfectly good one for years?

By all means keep some broken clay pots as crocks to aid drainage in

other pots. But you have probably hoarded enough to re-pot every plant in the county. They can be stored outside.Old granular fertiliser should be scattered along the hedge line, or

over the compost heap to help it break down. Pesticides that are past their sell-by date should be taken to your local authority for safe, supervised disposal.Old half-empty bags of potting and seed compost may be scattered over the heather bed. Keep the plastic bags for growing early potatoes on the patio.Where neatly tied bundles of branches, used as pea supports, are

ancient and brittle, leave them out under a hedge or tree for wildlife

to move into.A shed makeover

A shed is a home from home, so by all means personalise it. If the roof is sound then give consideration to a living roof of sedums. They are supplied in carpet form and have proved to be a success

at our Gardeners' Question Time shed at Sparsholt College,

Hampshire, as seen in our cover photo. If it turns you on, by all means have gingham curtains and fancy

tie-backs. Personally I have a bolt on the inside of the door, a mug, some gardening magazines, the radio and a cushion (but then I'm a

patient gardener).Stuff to get rid of

Long ago I found that gimmicks put years on you. I hate bulb-planters. I have never found one that works well on firm, stony ground. Sheep-shear blades always manage to overlap with a gap. And those macho loaded holsters and tool pouches never have the

one piece of equipment I need.

Thanks to Learning Breakthrough our Autistic

son has been able to show emotion in ways

we never thought possible. He expresses

love, I am regularly covered in kisses and

he tells me every day “mummy – I love you

so so much”. We always have a good chat at

bedtime and recently when I kissed him and

told him I loved him he said “mummy – you

made my heart grow”. A rather profound

statement for any 5 year old but for a child

who barely spoke a year before it felt like

nothing short of a miracle.

It has been a hard road from when I first started to notice my son wasn’t reaching

his milestones when he was about 2.5. His

speech and understanding of language

weren’t progressing, he was a very strong

willed child, emotionally volatile, preferred his

own company, had poor balance and spatial

awareness, refused most foods and began

to hand flap and twist when excited – all red flags for ASD.As time went on his autistic traits became

more pronounced and I felt like I was losing

my son. He found it difficult to engage in conversation and to make eye contact. He

paid very little attention to his little sister

and wouldn’t let anyone do anything for

him except me. He refused to go anywhere,

his anxiety was taking over all our lives – he

wouldn’t go to the park, to visit family, to soft

play areas or birthday parties ….. all things

a 3 year old should enjoy. Not to mention

the things a 3 year old doesn’t enjoy –

paediatrician appointments, assessments,

occupational therapy, speech therapy …. it

was a nightmare for both of us.

I have always loved and accepted my son for

who he is but what I’ve refused to accept is

that I can’t do anything to help him. I began

researching anything and everything that

could help my beautiful boy. A friend told me

about an advert she heard on the radio about

the Learning Breakthrough

Program. I decided to go

along to an information

evening where I listened to

Susan describe her journey

and the science behind the

LBP. I left that night full

of hope and certain that I

had found the answer to

helping my son.

Susan came to visit us in

our home where he would feel comfortable

and relaxed – he had just turned 4. We

discussed the exercises that he would be

capable of doing given his age and I started

with a few minutes once a day building up to

ten minutes a day. He wasn’t able to catch so I

started with blowing bubbles and getting him

to pop them whilst balancing on the board.

Gradually he learned to catch and has become

an expert at the pendulum ball and bouncy

balls. We can’t do all of the exercises yet but

he’s only just turned 5.

I can tell you it is hard work and is not for the

faint hearted but neither are the challenges

of raising a child with autism – the daily

battles of teeth brushing, dressing, going to

school, dinnertime …. I thought, what’s one

more thing to add to the day when it could

potentially make all those other struggles

disappear?!

Within weeks of starting the program he

began to become an adventurous little

boy – my son learned to

ride a bike, something

I thought I might never

see! Rather than cry in the

car outside the park he

asked to go and climbed

everything he could

without fear. He started

school in September

and has settled in so

well and coped with the

curriculum without difficulty. His teacher told me recently that he’s a very popular member

of the class and he comes home every day

with stories of everything he’s done and who

he’s played with. Going to parties fills him with excitement and I watch him join in with

his friends and it fills me with pride – these are the things that other parents might take

for granted, as I’m sure I would have too had

my precious son not taught me what really

matters in life.

I cannot remember the last time he had a

serious meltdown, he still gets upset and

frustrated but he expresses his feelings now

rather than letting them get the better of

him. He has a lovely relationship with his

sister now and he has become very close

to his dad whereas before he didn’t really

let anyone get too close except me. He was

recently dis-charged from community speech

therapy because his assessment scores had

improved so much, his speech therapist also

commented that she didn’t see the same

anxiety problems and unwillingness to

cooperate.

I couldn’t have done this without Susan’s

encouragement and support. Her office sign reads ‘Unlock your potential’ and that is

exactly what has happened to our child – he

is no longer ‘locked in’. She truly wants the

very best for every family that she works with.

I am so grateful that Susan and the LBP came

into our lives. Previously the future filled me with overwhelming fear, I still worry – as every

mother does, but not to the extent that I used

to. I’m happy knowing I’m doing my best for

my son and I’m watching him grow into a

wonderful little man.

We’re one year on and I’m aware that we still

have a long road ahead as he still has some

problems but I watch my son now enjoying

his life – laughing, singing and dancing and I

think to myself that anything’s possible …..

Telephone : 028 9083 3568

I originally injured my ankle in a motorcycle

accident in 1970. My ankle bone was fractured

and it came out of its socket. This resulted in

my ankle being surgically pinned. The pain

really started about 15 years ago and it steadily

got worse over time. To the point where it was

difficulttoworkortogoforevenashortwalk. The pinning left my ankle stiff with very little

movement which made it hard to walk over rough

ground or up slopes. I attended Musgrave Park

Hospital and they gave me a brace for my ankle

but it was very impractical and the pain in my

ankle was unbearable when I took it off.

David says “The secret of the rocker is that

unlike most ankle braces it is designed

to facilitate movement not to reduce it.

By mimicking the ankles own movement

it reduces stress on the ankle foot and

lower limb. Our patients often try a sample

device during the examination to allow

them to really get the feeling of walking

properly again.

My sister gave me a copy of the Chatterbox

Newsletter and I read an article about a new shoe

insert which had been designed and developed

by the Northern Ireland Foot and Ankle Clinic.

I phoned and made an appointment to see

David Hallowell the Podiatrist who designed the

device. David examined my ankle and said that

the restriction in movement was the cause of my

painandthatIwouldbenefitfromthenewrockerdevice. The rocker has to be custom made so

aboutaweeklaterIhaditfitted. With this type of ankle injury you can

be in pain every time you stand up. For

many of our patients just being able to

walk around the local shops can be a

real challenge. For some this can be very

depressing. It’s extremely gratifying to be

able to help them walk pain free again.

It has been wonderful to be able to do a full

days work with no severe pain and not having

to limp around at night. I would recommend to

anyone with this type of injury to give the rocker a

Ballymena United launched their new home kit for this incoming season at the Ballymena United Youth Acade-my Awards evening. The new top is a throw back to the 1980/81 Irish and Ulster Cup winning team, which was worn by a certain homegrown former Northern Ireland player and manag-er Nigel Worthington. It was fitting, then, that another local, and current Northern Ireland manager, Michael O'Neill, was on hand to help launch the new kit in style. The new kit is also already steeped in local sport before a ball is kicked, made by Uhlsport, whose Irish agent is former Ballymena United goalkeeper Brian Hutchin-son, and supplied by former Irish League player Chris Morgan of Club Sport NI, it is scheduled to be available to supporters at the start of July. Chairman John Taggart said "This season will be exact-ly 35 years since that great Ballymena side graced the Showgrounds pitch and what better way to commemo-rate that than to bring back the stripes in a modern out-fit. We would like to thank our long term main sponsor McBurney Transport and shirt sponsor Francey Coach Hire for making this possible". John Taggart also paid tribute to Nigel McIlrath and the development committee for their work on the new kit, "new kits and team wear don't just happen by magic,

behind every decision there is a dedicated committee working hard identifying suppliers and choosing the clothing rang-es carefully to look right on the pitch, but also that supporters will be proud to wear." The kits will be priced at £40 for adults and £32 for juniors, further details with regards to the exact date that it goes on sale will be published as soon as possible on the Ballymena United website. Ireland’s ‘Mini-Sensei’ junior team of Reaghan, Charli, Adam, Scott, Dylan and Ella. The course focused on the Katana Sword, the ancient and most famous weapon of the Samurai Warrior. Sensei Paul Timperley,a6thDanJu-JitsuMasterhastrainedwiththisweapon for over 25 years and explains; “the Katana Sword is probably the most skillful, feared and sacred weapon of the Samurai Warrior in ancient times. The Samurai warrior ‘was one’ with his sword and it was part of him, taken everywhere with him including to bed. I have been training for the majority of my lifetime with this incredible weapon and I feel I am still a novice, in comparison to the great swordsmen of the past and present. It is a weapon to be respected at all times, one which is thoroughly stimulating to train with as one never stops learning when wielding it. ” Sensei Paul continues; “the children had a wonderful time during the course training with specially designed foam bokkens (wooden swords) learning some of the basic cuts and movements with the sword. Even the youngest and smallest of the 5 year olds became a Samurai Warrior for a little while! Shogun Ju-Jitsu has been built and grown from scratch here in Northern Ireland by my wife Mandi and me over the past 2-3 years, focusing on children, their families, school children and now volunteers. We are planning on expanding by opening new clubs locally very soon to allow more children and families the opportunity to experience our unique and safe methods of teaching Ju-Jitsu, so please keep an eye out for our name.”
