Dr. Mandel’s Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I wish that all parents/guardians and the broader community of MHS could see the spirit
that our students, faculty, and staff showed this past week. If I had to attribute a
percentage, I would say that on Friday 95% of the entire campus was wearing blue and
gold (including a lot of paint, spandex, and accessories). There is a tremendously positive
feeling when so many people celebrate the school together, and the comradery and unity
was palpable.
We are heading toward the progress grade point for first quarter, so please take time to
talk with your student(s) about how things are going in classes. The habits and routines
that our students establish early on in the semester are important indicators of their
future behaviors so please reinforce positive actions and let us know if you need
assistance to address areas of potential struggle.
This point in the school year is also where we tend to see attendance play a major role in
academic success. Absences can add up quickly, and we know that students who are in
the classroom receiving instruction and participating daily do better and feel better in
school. We absolutely understand that students will miss some school days because of
illness or appointments, but please try to schedule appointments before or after school if
you are able. We also ask that you excuse medical appointments by providing a note
from a medical provider. I want to let you know that we will be taking a proactive
approach towards helping students maintain good attendance by recognizing students
with good or improving attendance, and by meeting with students who show signs that
they are struggling with daily attendance.

I also need to extend a “thank you” to our parents/guardians for helping us to address
dress code this year. I have noticed that since I started talking about dress code with the
students and in my communication with you, there has been a noticeable
improvement. Please continue to help us by helping your student make appropriate
clothing choices for school based on the Marana School District and MHS Dress Code.
We will be starting our Instructional Intervention period this week on Thursday from
3:00 – 3:40. Students will be assigned to their 6th period teacher and they will be allowed
to travel using a pass system to other classrooms for intervention (i.e. make up work,
assessments, instruction, enrichment). We believe that dedicating this time for students
and teachers is important, so please support this effort by talking with your student
about what schoolwork can be accomplished.

CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY - Attached is a flyer for the Marana PD Citizens
Academy beginning Sept. 2nd through Nov. 18th. The flyer says 18 or older,
however, the Officer running the program informed me they will allow students
who are 16 or older with a driver's license. MPD would like some MHS Students to
be able to attend. They’re hoping to get anywhere from 10-15
students. Completion of this looks great on any high school resume and it looks
especially good if anyone is looking at a career in law enforcement. If you have
any questions, please contact Officer Hunter at 616-6400. A 4-page application is
attached with this Tiger Beat email message for your convenience.

TIGER PRIDE News
First of all TIGER PRIDE! Our programs are busy preparing and promoting the Marana
Culture this 2015 season. The Cheer, Cross Country, Dance team, Football, Golf, Swim
and Ladies Volleyball programs have their teams chosen and are Committed to working
hard at practice to be ready for their first match, meet or game. These Tigers are
diligently training with hours of drills and skills working to be the Competitive team

continue to push through the difficult challenges and motivate their fellow Marana
Tigers on campus.
The Marana High football team has persevered in the hot summer training and
preseason Monsoon humidity to expose Culture, Commitment and Competitiveness.
Our Tigers revealed their strength and determination with a win against Rio Rico this
Friday with the season opener. It was outstanding and appreciated to see the Marana

CTE SPOTLIGHT
MHS Welding Program
MHS WELDING PROGRAM
Marana High School has the largest
welding program and opportunities for
employment after high school in southern
Arizona. This summer MHS hosted the
first ever AWS (American Welding
Society) Certification Boot Camp. The
camp provided students with a great
opportunity to take their welding
certification test to become certified
welders. For two weeks, 13 students
from MHS attended the boot camp and all
students completed one or more welding
certifications. The certifications included
the AWS D1.1 plate certification in the
SMAW (Stick) process and the FCAW
(MIG) process. Congratulations to MHS
Welding students! Explore the
opportunities in the welding program at
Marana!
At MHS we are very proud to offer a diverse array of CTE/JTED programs. The
integration of these programs throughout our curriculum is just one of the many
opportunities for students that our comprehensive high school provides. Throughout
the year we will be sharing glimpses into the programs with you. Please take a
moment to read about Welding.

The following is taken from our handbook, which is available online:
STUDENT DRESS CODE
At Marana High School all students are expected to dress appropriately. Please see
guidelines below.
School administration reserves the right to prohibit any clothing or accessories that
pose a threat to the safety of other students or staff. This includes anything that by
appearance causes a disruption to the learning environment.
All shirts, blouses and dresses must have a minimum of 1 inch shoulder straps and fit
under the arm. Razor back tank tops are not prohibited if the straps are an inch or
more and the proper undergarments are worn. Proper clothing should not expose any
part of the torso (front or back) at any time. This includes the midriff, chest, and
cleavage.
Any garments such as shirts, tops, dresses, skirts, pants, overalls, shorts, etc. with
buttons, zippers, snaps, etc. must be worn buttoned, zipped and/or snapped
appropriately. All clothing must be free of excessive holes or tears.
Sheer/see-thru garments of any kind are prohibited unless worn over appropriate
clothing. Tight or revealing clothing, spaghetti straps, strapless, and halter tops are
prohibited.
Undergarments may not be visibly exposed at any time including bandeaus.
Pants, shorts, dresses or skirts must be worn appropriately and may not present a
safety issue or distraction to self and/or others. They must adequately cover the body
at all times. Pants or shorts must not be “sagging.” The acceptable length of dresses,
skirts, and shorts will be determined by the complete coverage of the buttock area.
Belts must be tucked into pant loops, not hanging, and should not be excessively long.
Chains worn on articles of clothing are prohibited.
Footwear must be appropriate and worn at all times. Students may be restricted from
activities for which their footwear is unsafe or inappropriate.
Marana High School CARING INTERACTIONS & EFFECTIVE PRACTICES Marana High School
Marana High School Tiger Beat August 24, 2015 Vol. 2 Issue 4
Head coverings and do-rags are prohibited. It is the staff’s discretion whether or not
hats, caps or beanies may be worn indoors.
Any article of clothing which refers to alcohol, drugs, or contains inappropriate
content. Slogans or wording which may be suggestive or construed to have a “double
meaning” (one of which meaning is inappropriate) may not be
worn. Anything worn portraying offensive, suggestive, derogatory, violent, sexual,
cult or gang-related writing or pictures is prohibited. This includes all “do-rags” and
all bandanas associated with gang activity.
The type of dress, make-up, accessories, hairstyles or grooming displayed by the
student should not disrupt the classroom or campus environment nor threaten the
safety, health or comfort of the student, fellow students or any staff member.
The administration reserves the right to interpret and enforce these guidelines in the
school setting.
