Club Projects By Building & Grounds

The club has several projects in the offing that are open for bidding or volunteering by club members. There was some response to last month’s article, but we need more. One applicant has offered to provide painting services at low or no cost, and this will get us going on the IR sound reduction work. The project to replace the entry doors to the indoor range (four total) and the main entry door to the

clubhouse remains to be done. We had one response to this but no resolution as yet. The project to replace the drywall on the exterior of the office walls and to repair the ceiling in the meeting room is still up for grabs, and we’ll hire an outside contractor if no one responds this month. The project to

replace the kitchen cabinets and counters also drew no response, and will be farmed out if there’s no club interest. Here’s a new one: replace the siding and trim on, and build a new ramp for, the B&G shed out back. This will be done in the Spring after some warmer

    Few Volunteers for Work-or-Pay

There has been a fairly mild response to the request that those who are interested in working off their B&G assessment submit their names for inclusion on a call list. Again, here are the relevant points: 1. E-mail (preferable) or phone Mike Palmer with your name and contact information. 2. Indicate the kinds of work you feel you are competent to perform. 3.Specifiy your hours and days of availability. 4. State if you are a contractor or skilled tradesman and want to bid on jobs that the Club hires out. With this information, I will try to match up interested workers with available jobs. The return of the annual Appleseed Riflery Program is slated for the weekend of May 11-12, 2013. Realizing that bringing this program to Metacon will involve the closure of our outdoor range for a full weekend, we engaged in some discussion with the membership at our October meeting to gauge if we should go forward with the calendar request. It was unanimously felt by all present that the positives of this event far outweighed the inconvenience of a range closure. The Appleseed program is very popular and is greatly anticipated by many of our members. Last year’s event sold out in only one day. The coordinators of the event are looking forward to coming back to Metacon and they sincerely appreciate the range usage. We will keep you posted with updates as the time nears.

The Club’s 2012 budget is still being formulated for draft presentation to the Board of Governors in February. Anyone with specific requests, comments, or suggestions

Following the conclusion of various fundraising activities, including matche by Class III, Falling Plate, Rifle, Bullseye, and NECPL, plus several Friends of Metacon events, the Club was able to write a check to Gifts of Love for $1115.00. Another $250 was donated directly by members, and a pile of food stuffs was also collected and donated. The fundraising effort was instigated primarily by Bob Margolis, who extends a “thank you” to all those who helped make our donation possible.

The Metacon bullseye pistol team has openings for new members interested in honing their shooting skills, competing with other shooters, visiting other ranges and having a good time. It is a great excuse to get out and shoot. The Bullseye team competes each year in the Metropolitan Revolver League of Hartford. The league name is a bit of a misnomer since most competitors are firing semi-auto pistols. There are 13 teams in the league. The season runs from September to April. Each team competes twice with each other team during the season. One match is fired at their home range and one at the opponent’s home range. Metacon matches are held Wednesday evenings. The away matches are Monday through Friday depending on the opponent’s home night. One match is fired each week with a break around the holidays. A match consists of 3 targets with 10 shots fired on each. The first target is a 50ft NRA B-2 Slow fire target. 10 shots are fired in a 10 minute period. The second and third targets are NRA B-3 Timed and Rapid fire targets. The second target is fired on twice. 5 shots fired in 20 seconds then the remaining 5 shots in another 20 second period. The third target is also fired twice. 5 shots in 10 seconds and again with 5 shots in 10 seconds. The total of the three targets makes up the score for the competitor. The team score is made up of the top 5 competitors for the evening. If a teammate is having a ‘below average experience’ on a given night his or her score won’t hurt the team. Also, with the top 5 targets used for the team score, any competitor who can’t make it for the night won’t hurt the team either. The equipment needed is quite minimal. Safety glasses, hearing protection. A .22 caliber pistol or revolver. Both open iron sights and scopes are acceptable and 30 rounds of .22 ammo (a few extra in case a re-fire is needed is a good idea). The club has a S&W 422 with iron sights and a Ruger Mark III with a scope available if you don’t have a .22 pistol yet. If the match is at Metacon a couple of dollars towards refreshments is requested. If anyone is interesting in trying some practice matches, Monday evenings are designated practice nights. Interested members should email me ([email protected]) for more information or if they would like to try a practice match and I will call a few relays some evening. I am generally at the club Monday evenings from 6p to 7:30p during junior rifle practice.

    METACON BULLSEYE TEAM OPENINGS

    By Jeff Moores

Early Sunday morning on Sept 23rd, 18 Simsbury boy scouts from Troop 76 were introduced to the world of shooting sports at the Metacon. After a long day, all 18 scouts completed their requirements for the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Rifle Merit badge. Merit badge classes are typically taught by counselors who are experienced in the subject area; in this case they were scout parents as well as Metacon members, Jim Hatch, John Mundt, John Harmon & Ted Hsu. There are nearly 120 merit badges available for scouts to obtain. The Rifle Merit badge is one of the most popular of merit badges. Scouts must rely on summer camp to take the class, often competing with hundreds of scouts to learn on too few rifles. Troop 76 has been fortunate in having a relationship with the Metacon Gun Club. Metacon’s excellent facilities and club competition rifles and equipment allow for safe and efficient training. Since 2004, many rifle merit badge classes have been

taught at Metacon?s facilities to all three of Simsbury’s boy scout troops. For many of Troop 76’s scouts between the ages of 11-16, this was their very first introduction to firearms. The .22 single shot target rifle is the BSA’s required rifle. The club’s excellent Anschutz rifles were a treat to the scouts compared to the less precise summer camp rifles. Topics covered include range safety, shooting positions, and marksmanship fundamentals. Qualifying for the badge requires firing five shot groups within the size of a quarter at 50 feet. The Metacon instructors stayed with each scout until the last scout qualified. Responsible firearms instruction is critical for developing responsible, independent, thinking American citizens; an idea cherished by both the BSA and here at Metacon. Note: Indoor range remained open to all members at all times and no outdoor range facilities were used. Many happy and proud scouts and their families were won over. Thank you, Metacon members!

The Election is close upon us. As usual, there is just a massive amount of information available to “help’ determine our decisions. The number of issues that you may have an interest in, driven by technology, leaves a huge amount of information to sort through. For gun owners, the election, and the coming year is of extraordinary importance. Obama win means Supreme Court pick(s) most likely very anti-2nd Amendment. The President has already stated he will push for various tough restrictions and bans on gun ownership (think England and Australia). The President has also stated he will sign the UN Treaty on small arms. There are Congressional Senators and Representatives who have introduced legislation to block the above treaty. A little traction is current but the various outcomes of Congressional races will determine the bill’s future Other legislation in Congress in the touted bill by Sen. Lautengerg (D) NJ, to ban on-line sale of ammunition and requires face to face ammo sales, registration of ammo dealers and some incidental items. This bill

The program is progressing with the practices being the current focus. The Fall is always slow in the match calendar. The veteran shooters are honing their skills as well as getting the shots necessary to earn the various NRA qualification awards. The younger shooters are still getting the basics pinned down. There are several who may be able to start the very basic awards qualifications. This is good for the shooters as well the program. Due to numbers, we still have split range times and this smoothed out considerably.

If you have a full size truck or SUV with a hitch platform and have towed a trailer, please let us know if you could do that chore too, if necessary. Also remember that any time spent would be credited toward the work assessment requirement. Those interested should contact At-Large Governor Jim Couture at 860-5955152 or [email protected] .

has a little traction. Forget not another attempt to not only reinstate the “Clinton AW ban, but to greatly expand the list of banned firearms. The best source of the Federal legislation about firearms is at thomas.loc.gov. Type in firearms and the current list of 164 bills pop up. You can read the text, determine co-sponsors, and current status. In CT, expect more attempts to greatly expand the current AW ban, enact a hi-cap ban, restriction on sales of firearms and micro-stamping. NY is making a determined effort to get micro-stamping. If so, then Ma, then ? Last year due to the efforts of many groups and very many individuals, certain of the anti-gun bills never got to the floor for a vote. Bob Crook (ctsportsmen.com) and the Connecticut Citizens Defense League (ccdl.us), were helpful if not instrumental in stopping some of bills. If you wish, a visit to cga.ct.gov provides great information about legislation. Numbers count, participation really does make an impression no matter your interest. Please vote.

    Safety And Education News

By Robert Ronstrom The Safety and Education Committee has approved courses of fire (COF’s) for the next Rifle match and IDPA match. PLEASE NOTE: A small first aid pouch has been placed on the OR and the IR. These are designed to cover minor incidents such as stings, scratches, small cuts and similar happenings. As always use your best judgment for care required in a given incident. The committee will monitor these kits for re-supply and effectiveness.

The Membership Meeting was held on Tuesday October 16, 2012 at Metacon Gun Club. The meeting was called to order by club Vice President, Bob Margolis at 7:32PM. Bob Margolis opened the meeting and welcomed Scott Wilson and the executive board from the CT Civil Defense League, attending to present a plaque recognizing the support given to CCDL. There were no minutes from September 18, 2012 as the meeting was canceled due to a power outage. The August 21, 2012 membership meeting minutes were read, seconded and approved. Bob then called upon 7 new applicants to introduce themselves and say a few words. Membership Secretary Peter Donahue reported total membership of 776 – 734 regular, 27 spousal, 5 junior, 5 life, 4 law enforcement, and 1 discretionary. Peter made a motion to move 13 people to the waitlist. Treasurer Mike Palmer reported on the total assets in various deposit accounts and CD accounts. We have not incurred the expense associated with the

capital improvements for which the special assessment was made. Those amounts are expected to be expended in the following year. Mike Palmer, reporting for Building and Grounds, said that Robert Sunday is interested in the Building & Grounds position. Mike will work with Robert through the rest of Mike’s term and see if Robert wants to run for the position in the next election. No major projects or work parties scheduled at current time. Mike recognized Art Tiede for his involvement in cleaning the indoor range. Assistant Treasurer June Shew reported for the Oversight Committee, saying that they’re having trouble opening reports in new software. Governor at Large Art Tiede reported on Metacon IDPA being the first Sunday of every month. The previous match was a backup gun match with 25 total shooters. Results were placed into national completion results. Next match is Sunday November 4, 2012. The roster will be limited to 26 participants. Rifle Director Vlad Mashkovich reported that last month’s match had 3 people. Vlad reminded non-members that they could attend for a fee of $10. Handgun Director Jeff Moores reported for Bullseye League and noted 1 win and 3 losses (but losing to good teams). The match schedule is posted on the bulletin board. Juniors Director Bob Ronstrom reported the program is doing well. Bob also

reported for S&E indicating courses of fire have been approved for the next rifle match and IDPA. Additionally, Bob reported on political activities regarding firearms and supporting the efforts of CCDL. Bob encouraged members to call/write legislators and attend hearings and meetings as available. The club purchased a table of 10 at the CT Coalition of Sportsman annual dinner. Currently 3 seats are available for $55 per ticket. See Gary Lenk if interested. Bob Margolis started a discussion for the members in attendance regarding the use of the indoor range by Avon Old Farms School. Bob informally polled the members in attendance if they were in favor of continuing access for Avon Old Farms and most but not all of the attendees were in favor. Additional discussion took place regarding the calendar and how the on-line calendar and paper calendar should be consistent. Bob discussed instituting a calendar request form. Calendar requests for pistol permit classes on November 11, 2012, where the classroom will be closed from 8:30AM to 5PM and November 17, 2012 where the classroom will be closed from 9AM to 6PM. A calendar request for Appleseed 2013 was made for May 11th and 12th 2013.
