C: The light no darkness can overcome. P: Stay with us, Lord, for it is evening,

C: And the day is almost over.

P: Let Your light scatter the darkness

C: And illumine Your Church. P: Joyous light of glory: of the immortal Father; heavenly, holy, blessed Jesus Christ.

We have come to the setting of the sun, and we look to the evening light.

C: We sing to God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: You are worthy of being

praised with pure voices forever. O Son of God, O Giver of life: the universe

proclaims Your glory. Amen.

Evening Prayer Worship Wednesday, May 13, 2020 7:00pm

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

Early morn till evening our song shall rise to Thee;

Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,

Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,

Which wert and art and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! though the darkness hide Thee,

Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see; Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,

Perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea;

Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty!

God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity!

THE CONFESSION AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF FORGIVENESS

P: Let us come before God in true repentance, seeking His mercy and forgiveness. C: O God our Father, we admit and confess that we are by nature sinful and

unclean and that we have sinned against You in thought and in word and in deed. We have not lived as Your followers but have sought to go our own ways in directions that have not brought glory to You or blessing to others. Your love has not reached others through us in every situation, that there have been times in which we have been loveless, thoughtless, and judgmental toward others, unwilling to help our neighbors as we ought. Your will has not been our priority at all times. We have not used every opportunity given to us to witness to the resurrection faith that is ours and have at times been slow to speak of the hope that is ours in Christ. We ask for Your forgiveness as we sincerely repent of our sins.

P: God is gracious and forgiving. He lifts up the fallen and encourages His people by

the indwelling of His Spirit. As He said to His disciples of old, our Lord Jesus says to

us, “Fear not!” and promises pardon, life, and salvation. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, I forgive you all of your sins in the name of the Father and of the

Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

THE EPISTLE LESSON Romans 6:1-11 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no

means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us

who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were

buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of

life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be

united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified

with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from

sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We

know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer

has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the

life he lives he lives to God. 11

So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

P: This is the Word of the Lord

C: Thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

THE GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 10:5a, 21-33 Jesus sent out the twelve, instructing them, “Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, 22 and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.” 24 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household. 26 “So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows

5

sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise to You, O Christ.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in

Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died

and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the

Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of

saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE SERMON HYMN “The Church’s One Foundation” LSB 644

THE SERMON

The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord;

She is His new creation by water and the Word.

From heav’n He came and sought her to be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her, and for her life He died.

Elect from ev’ry nation, yet one o’er all the earth;

Her charter of salvation: one Lord, one faith, one birth. One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food,

And to one hope she presses with ev’ry grace endued.

Though with a scornful wonder the world sees her oppressed,

By schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed, Yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up, “How long?”

And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.

Through toil and tribulation and tumult of her war She waits the consummation of peace forevermore

Till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest,

And the great Church victorious shall be the Church at rest.

THE OFFERING PRAYER

THE OFFERING

THE OFFERTORY

THE PRAYERS OF THE CONGREGATION

THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

P: Let my prayer be set before You as incense: and the lifting up of my hands as

the evening sacrifice.

Jesus loves me! This I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong; they are weak, but He is strong Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so. Jesus loves me! He who died, Heaven’s gates to open wide. He will wash away my sin, lets His little child come in. Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.

C: Hear my prayer, O Lord; listen to my cry. Keep me as the apple of Your eye;

hide me in the shadow of Your wings. P: In righteousness I shall see You; when I awake, Your presence will give me joy.

C: Be present, merciful God, and protect us through the hours of this night, so

that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of life may find our rest

in You. P: Visit our dwellings, O Lord, and drive from them all the snares of the enemy;

C: Let Your holy angels dwell with us to preserve us in peace; and let Your

blessing be on us always; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

THE PREFACE AND SANCTUS P: The Lord be with you.

C: And with your spirit.

P: Lift up your hearts.

C: We lift them up unto the Lord. P: Let us give thanks unto the Lord, our God.

C: It is good and right so to do.

P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give thanks

to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. And most especially are we

bound to praise You for the glorious resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, the very Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us and bore the sins of the world. By His

dying He has destroyed death, and by His rising again He has restored to us

everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of

heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

THE SANCTUS

THE LORD’S PRAYER

C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and

lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the

kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when

He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: "Take eat;

this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me." In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it

to them, saying: "Drink of it, all of you; this is my blood of the new testament,

which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it,

in remembrance of me." The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion As You come to the Lord's Supper, you are affirming with each communicant that Jesus is your Savior and Lord, that

with Lutheran Christians, you believe His Body and Blood are present and you desire to serve Him as a dynamic

disciple in the fellowship of all believers. Our Holy Communion practice is called "CLOSE" communion, not "CLOSED"

communion. "Close" communion invites all those who answer the following questions in the affirmative. We DO seek

to help each visitor and member, to prepare for the celebration of the Sacrament. If you have not communed with us

before, or if you cannot answer yes to the questions below, please speak to our Pastor or an Elder before

communing.

1. Have I been baptized in the name of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

2. Do I believe that I am a sinful human being without hope of eternal life except for God's mercy in Christ?

3. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is God's Son and my personal Savior from sin, death, and the power of the

devil?

4. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is personally present in the Sacrament of Holy Communion with His true Body

and Blood?

5. Do I intend, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to live a Godly life?

At Messiah, Communion is distributed in a manner whereby the individual cup, followed by the common cup, are

offered at the same table. Communicants seated in the middle sections of the Sanctuary proceed to the altar first,

standing behind the usher. Then the communicants in the side sections will proceed to the altar, also standing behind

the usher. This will provide a prayerful setting surrounding the significance of receiving Christ's body and blood.

A wine that has been chemically treated to remove all alcohol and sulfites is offered in clear glasses in the individual

trays. Gluten-free wafers are available at the usher tables in the back.

Go in the joy of sins forgiven to serve the Lord with gladness!

Make a difference in this world

through Christ by sharing His Light
