In The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything, he has some wise things to say about failure. He writes that, If you are not prepared to be wrong, youll never come up with anything original. He cites several important examples. J.K. Rowling was rejected by 12 publishing houses before Harry Potter became the world wind success it is. Oprah was once fired as a news reporter and Steve Jobs was kicked out of his own company long before the iPhone came along. These examples are of course of people who were not defeated by failure or criticism. They learned and adapted, kept focussed and motivated and ultimately found success. However, there are probably many manuscripts left in bottom drawers or left unwritten because their authors found that the potential risk of failing overcame the desire to keep trying. Within the school context, students can fall far from their potential because the risk of failure or falling short does not make it seem worthwhile to put in the extra effort. It is not uncommon to have students who would rather not try because it is easier on self-image to be able to say afterwards, Well I didnt really try anyway.I would much rather all our students to have a more positive attitude knowing that success is more likely to be found by giving each learning opportunity a real go and then if not reaching their desired goal, listen to and heed the feedback that hopefully will lead to better outcomes the next time round. End of the Year Concert Next Thursday night at 7pm in our hall will be the culminating opportunity in 2018 for our various musical groups to perform for their families and friends. I am confident that these performances will show our music program off at its very best and I hope you can come along to celebrate what has been a great year for our music department. MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Year 6 Graduation Wednesday 12 December marks a landmark evening for our year six students. This is the date of our final formal student event for the year- the Year Six Graduation.

Parents of year six have already received information around this event. This is a most important occasion where we acknowledge the talent, diligence and skill of our year six student body.

This is an evening where every student has their time on the stage. We see the year in action via photos and videos. We see every students celebrated. We note students who have demonstrated high levels of academic, musical and sporting achievements. For all students and staff this is a special and rewarding night.

We look forward to a great evening with our year six students and their families. Our student leaders As the year closes I think that it is timely to talk about our student leaders. This year we have dedicated a section of the newsletter for you, our community, to get to know our leaders a little more. The students featured have been all of our inducted leaders across the school form year 4 to 6 The year 6 leaders which encompass school captains, house captains, music captains, chess captains and SEP reps have supported and led a range of school programs and events. These include Sports days, the Active School Travel Program, the Prep Information sessions and Important ceremonies such as the Anzac Day Service.

Our student leaders present themselves as role models for our students and our community. They have been eager to help staff, parents and students, lead when required and initiate new ideas and ways to make our school better.

The inducted Holland Park student leaders are:

We thank all of you for doing such a great job this year for our school. It has been a pleasure to work with you. Leigh Harrod Deputy Principal

UNIVERSAL CHILDREN’S DAY

Universal Children’s Day 2018 In 1954 the United Nations proclaimed Universal Children’s Day to acknowledge the importance of children all around the world. The day was set aside to acknowledge the rights of all children to be safe, happy and free. The United Nations recognised that literacy was at right for all children to be successful in their future life. Holland Park 2018 prep students will graduate in year six in 2024 and certainly will attain literacy as a life long learning skill. On Tuesday 20 November, prep students at Holland Park celebrated Universal Children’s Day in the school hall. Students were invited to come to school dressed wearing the clothes of their country of heritage. All prep classes gathered at the school assembly hall to celebrate their national heritage. Parents and grandparents attend-ed this special assembly and watched each student walk across the stage celebrating their cultural heritage. A musical performance followed and prep students performed two songs – “You’ll Sing a Song and I’ll Sing a Song” and “Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” in Japanese. Following the musical performance prep students returned to their classes to celebrate an International lunch prepared by their families and prep staff. We would like to thank all parents and grandparents who attended Universal Children’s Day and provided such delicious food to share on the day. We appreciate how insights into diverse cultures were celebrated on the day and thank you all for joining with us to celebrate heritage and culture at Holland Park State School. Prep teachers 2018

COMMUNITY LIAISON OFFICER

FROM OUR STUDENTS

Hello, my name is Jayden L. I am honoured and proud to have been the Student Council

Representative for 6NA 2018.

I loved this role of being actively involved in discussions and decision making for events such

as various fundraising to support our school and charities in need. I have enjoyed working

with other Student Council Representatives in putting together fun, safe and memorable

events. And I must not forget to thank my prep (PJR) buddy class for their generous

donations in much needed resources and funds for our charities. They may be small, but

they have BIG hearts!

I also would like to take this opportunity to thank all my past and present teachers for the

guidance and support they’ve given me throughout the years.

I hope that I have left positive memories at this school.

3 Way Twilight Carnival The storm didn’t dampen the spirits of our winning Holland Park team taking out the winner’s trophy over Cleveland Penguins and Norman Park.

It was a shame that the carnival was cut short as the relays are always a highlight. There certainly was some enthusiastic cheering from the teams and some close finishes.

A couple of Pool Records were broken, Eloise P broke the 9yrs, 25m Butterfly and Bailey H from Cleveland broke the 11yrs 50m Butterfly record. 2018 BRISBANE METROPOLITAN RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Twenty-six of our swimmers competed again on Sunday at Chandler at the relay Champion-ships. Most of our teams made time improvements and some being quite substantial. We may be a relatively small club out at Chandler but we have the loudest cheering – thanks parents for all the support.

HPSS SWIM CLUB

Holland Park State School Swim School The swimming pool owes its origin to the foresight of Mr. A.

Duncan, the Head Teacher during the 1940s. After much

fundraising, a pool was completed in 1951. Since then the swim

school has been teaching children from the school community

the lifesaving skill of “swimming”.

During the 1990s the pool was reconfigured to the shape it is

today and a heat pump installed that has provided a more

comfortable swimming environment all year round. The painted

blue line around the pool still shows the outline of the original

pool.
