MESSAGE FROM PASTOR ERIC MOTOWN WAS REALLY MOVIN’!...

MESSAGE FROM PASTOR ERIC How are you at goodbyes? It has long been one of my favorite Bible verses, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.” The little note in my Bible says that the word Rejoice, can also be translated to Farewell. The word comes from the Greek Xairete. It has its relationship in the Lord. This month we are saying “rejoice” or “farewell” to Pastor Finch as we send him into retirement. And, we remember that we do this in the Lord. I believe we are a culture that dreads our farewells. Many of us don’t do very well with goodbyes. We have an opportunity to say good- bye well. And dare I say there can even be a sense of rejoicing because we are hoping to have a great party for Pastor Finch. We also re- joice because we know that Dick’s imprint won’t go away once he retires. Dick’s passion for art, music, architecture, preaching, among other things, will continue to have an impact on this place long after he is gone. Rejoice in the Lord. How do we say goodbye well? We do our part in being happy for Dick as he enters into re- tirement. We tell the stories that we have through tears that turn into laughter. Before I took a call to St. Mark’s 17 years ago, I remem- ber watching the 50 th anniversary video. As Dick was being interviewed, one of the things he said was that he was impressed with competence and that he felt fortunate to be surrounded by competent people. Dick has continued to say that throughout the years. The truth is, St. Mark’s continues to have an abundance of com- petent people. We are in good hands as we head into the future. We will say goodbye well, by continuing to use the gifts we have, to show Pastor Finch he was right about us continued page 2 MOTOWN WAS REALLY MOVIN’! THANK YOU, ST. MARK’S By Pastor Kate and Susan Hagen Thank you to everyone who con- tributed to our dinner and auction fundraiser for the youth to go to the ELCA Youth Gather- ing in Detroit this summer. So many people gave items for our auction, bought tickets for the dinner, and bid so generously at the auction. You are such a supportive congregation for our young people! It was a really fun evening! A lot of parents of the youth were very involved in making the event happen. Thank you, parents, for taking responsibility and putting your hearts into this fundraiser! Many of the youth spent time pre- paring for the evening and then worked hard at the dinner. The “Movin’ Thru Motown” evening made over $22,000! We have reached our fundraising goal and have what is needed to send the kids and chaperones to Detroit in July, including some scholarships for youth who need help with the family portion of the costs. Pastor Kate and I feel blessed to have had the privilege to work with Pastor Finch. We also feel blessed knowing that St. Mark’s is grounded in the trust that this is the Holy Spirit’s church using the competent and creative people of St. Mark’s to accomplish what God intends. So yes, farewell Pastor Finch as you head into retire-ment. Rejoice in the knowledge that we will con-tinue as we always have in the Lord. For the rest of us, may we take on the challenge to con-tinue celebrating in the Lord through all that is to come, continuing the journey grounded in the grace of God for years to come. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say rejoice.

See you in church!

By Elaine Orness, Volunteer Coordinator

I have received several calls from people who are going to be gone throughout June, July and August who generally volunteer for Sunday services. There will be an insert in a couple of bulletins offering people to sign up to be greeters, ushers, lectors, or read the creed and prayers. If you can help in any way please let me know and it will be greatly appreciated. Also, let me know which service you prefer. If you miss the inserts, just give me a call at church at 747-6677 or at home 838-2696.

Thank you to the May Messenger assembly crew, Myrna Shockley, Mary Dey, Helen Elden-burg, Marilyn Walli, Helen and Roy Jeremiah,

Dee Phillips, Joyce Cutler, Ronni Tvedten, Martin Waidelich, Jeannie Wennes, Janet Ryden, Martha Harvie, Donna Nelson and Diane Picker-ing, and of course Jan Kincaid for her organiza-tional and mailing skills. Keeping the congrega-tion and friends informed plays an important part at St. Mark’s.

Thank you to the Perez family for another wonderful evening celebrating Cinco de Mayo. A big thank you to Patti Berg and Dick Thiel for all of their help. The decorations were delightful and the food was wonderful as usual - an evening of great fellowship.

The landscape map is in the narthex. There are a couple of people signed up for the areas they want to do. There are more areas that would be grateful for some TLC throughout the summer. Your help in keeping the grounds look-ing nice would be appreciated.

April Giving Income Expense Budgeted Net

Thanks to your generous Easter giving, over $14,000, we have lowered our debt in the General Fund. These numbers are normal, but they still make me a little nervous. We are coming up on sum-mer vacation. Giving decreases quite a bit in the summer, but our expenses never take a vacation. A great way to keep giving while you are out of town is to give through Simply Giving. Give me a call or drop me an email, and I can set you up in five minutes. It really is that easy!

LENTEN GIVE UP TO GIVE BOXES

Congratulations St. Mark’s! We were hoping to beat the amount we received last year, and you came through. We collected $1,026 which allows the Social Ministry Committee to commit to support seven children in the Bite2Go pro-gram starting in September. Thank you.

ST. MARKS’ FEEDS AND CLOTHES PEOPLE

Summer Food Drive: As always, you may leave protein and non-perishable food items in the baskets in the narthex. And some of the food items that are always needed are coffee, sugar, powdered creamers, salt & pepper.

June: Sunscreen (liquid or sticks), flip flops, beach towels, new underwear.

July: Sleeping bags, sack lunch items, i.e. peanut butter, tuna, apples, gift cards for grocery stores.

August: Garden produce (any quantity), back to school clothes, new underwear

Summer Clothing Drive: Gently used kids clothes are always welcome; as you know, kids grow out of their clothes quickly!

ALL SAINTS LUTHERAN SOUP SUPPER

All Saints Lutheran Church not only is a community center now, they serve soup suppers every Tuesday night, and St. Mark’s helps on the fourth Tuesday of the month. This ministry serves low-income downtown and Browne’s Ad-dition residents and homeless people. Opportu-nities throughout the summer are Tuesday, June

23, July 28, August 25. Call Steve Nash at 536-4136 if you are able to help.

CROSSWALK

St. Mark’s provides the food and volunteer cooks for Crosswalk on the fourth Thursday of each month throughout the summer. Watch for sign-up sheets in church if you are able to con-tribute food for this meal. Crosswalk is a Volun-teers of America program serving street kids downtown.

DINING WITH DIGNITY

Helping hands are needed to serve breakfast throughout the summer months. Dining with Dignity also needs people to help in other areas. Email Deidre Jacobson at [email protected] to learn about opportunities to help homeless and low-income downtown residents.

If you can’t volunteer, please consider donat-ing gently used men’s and women’s clothing for the clothing closet at Shalom, part of the ministry of Central United Methodist Church.

SOCIAL MINISTRY COMMITTEE

Do you want to get involved in social out-reach program at St. Mark’s but don’t know where to start? Join us at our next meeting on August 9, 2015 at 9:30 am in the fellowship hall. All are welcome.

BITE2GO PROGRAM

Over 30 people offered to support a child at Franklin Elementary for a year with a food kit that will be put in the child’s backpack every Friday afternoon. Our St. Mark’s members were pre-sented with a challenge and came through!

St. Mark’s has paired up with Second Harvest to help out. The shelf-stable food won’t feed them the whole weekend, but it will help them with some of their hunger pangs, and maybe some-one else in their family as well.

Something for everyone to think about as well: Franklin Elementary would like to have some one-on-one time for the children to help with reading or language skills. Many of the children come from other countries and have more struggles than lack of food. If you think this is an opportunity that you can’t pass by, please contact Patti Berg at 443-9170, and she will get you in touch with the coordinator of this program.

Thanks for all you do, St. Mark’s.
