PEACE FOR THE JOURNEY ~ Pastor Eric

“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my

name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

John 14:25-27

Last summer I went on a 1300 mile bicycle journey with 5 other guys (ages 55,60,65,66,67) from Vancouver B.C. to the Golden Gate Bridge. One of my friends wrote a devotion about the trip that especially speaks to me and I want to paraphrase some of his thoughts in the hopes they might speak to you.

We traded the tranquility of the more rural roads in order to relish the beauty of the Pacific Ocean riding right along the coast most of the way. Often the roads were busy with wide-body RV’s, gawking tourists, trucks and impatient drivers. Often it wasn’t the most peaceful place for bicycle travel because everyone wanted to enjoy the beauty of the coastal scenery. At night huddled around the campfire, we experienced moments of that “Peace that passes human understanding” as we shared stories from that days ride.

I’ve often wondered about the peace Jesus spoke about in The Bible. The disciples didn’t have much outward peace as they were persecuted and lost their lives for the sake of the gospel. Yet there was a peacefulness deep inside that came only because they knew they had been called and chosen.

When we are living our lives with faithfulness and grace there can be a sense of peace even when it seems that chaos is all around us. When we are dealing with life’s storms, protected and empowered by the grace and the presence of The Lord, it seems that we can handle almost anything.

On the other hand, when we are unprepared, it seems that any small episode can cause us consternation. Perhaps the Lord calls us to be ready for the imperfect life on this earth by empowering us with the gift of The Holy Spirit.

And yet still peace can seem elusive. What is it that troubles you? What is it that prevents you from sleeping at night? What is it that makes you worry? Do you have a loved one who is sick or suffering? Maybe its health problems and sometimes there is a feeling of uneasiness with no apparent reason.

Sunday, 6/24 “Out of the Depths”

Text: Psalm 130

Theme: Sometimes when we pray out of desperation or “cry out” to God we wonder if God really hears our prayers. Psalm 130 reminds us that God’s timeline doesn’t also coincide with ours and encourages us to keep praying because ultimately with the Lord there is unfailing love.

Questions to think About as You Read: Under what circumstances have you ever wondered does God really

hear your prayers? Have you ever looked back and thought that even though you thought

you were ready for something in retrospect you weren’t ? How does trusting in God’s unfailing love help you persevere in life?

Sunday, 6/3 “Open Mouths, Open Hearts”

Text: Mark 7: 24-37

Theme: Spiritual miracles are often more difficult to trust that a physical healing. Questions to Think About as You Read: How would you like Jesus healing power to work in your life? How would you like Jesus healing power to work in the life of a loved

one? How has Jesus opened your heart or mouth?

Sunday, 6/17 “Who do You Serve”

Text: Joshua 24:14-18

Theme: In one of Bob Dylan’s greatest hits titled “Gotta Serve Somebody” He draws a lot of distinctions about the things we end up serving in this world. However he does come to the conclusion that whether we like it or not we will serve somebody or something. The ulti-mate question is who or what will we serve? Joshua makes it clear for all of us who we are called to serve.

Questions To Think About As You Read: If you are honest who or what do you ultimately serve? What is it that really drives you and how you make decisions What step could you take to serve God?

Sunday, 6/10 “God Provides”

Text: Exodus 16:2-4,9-15

Theme: When the Israelites cry out to God he leads them out of Egypt. God also provides for us when we ask him in prayer.

Questions to think About as You Read: Under what circumstances have you ever wondered does God really

hear your prayers? Have you ever looked back and thought that even though you thought

you were ready for something in retrospect you weren’t? How does trusting in God’s unfailing love help you persevere in life?

Slow down to Form, Reform and Transform

The phrase, Form, Reform and Transform brings to mind shaping clay or playdoh into cool shapes. This is a favorite activity for my granddaughter and me. As we shape the dough we laugh and share time together. Our hands are busy as we work on our project. When we’re all done we smash the dough together and put in the containers for next time. The next time we play with the playdoh, we may make different shapes or characters. We may act out a story that goes along with the playdoh figures. We are forming, reforming and transforming the dough into something interesting as we play. It takes time, but the time spent together is a tremen-dous gift to both of us. My faith is constantly being shaped and reshaped. Working here at SOC has been a time of growth for me as a Christian. I am constantly reminded that God speaks through the pastors, the staff, musi-cians and members. If I slow down and listen, I can hear God’s voice. He is forming you and me into the people of God. We are workers in His kingdom! Pastor Eric and Pastor Melissa give the music leaders the sermon texts and themes months ahead of time. It is an exciting process to read through the texts and research what songs may go along with the themes. As I work on the music for upcoming Sundays, I have the opportunity to slow down. I am able to take time to think and pray as I reflect on what God is telling us for that particular Sunday or special service. I pray that we will all find moments to slow down and pay attention to the ways in which God is shaping us and our faith. He is good and faithful and we are truly His creation. Let us all sing, clap, play and shout to the Lord as a community coming together to praise Him! God’s peace to you! Cathy Yseth

Psalm 8:3-8 When I consider Your heavens,

the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars,

which You have ordained; What is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him?

Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty!

WORSHIP MATTERS ~ Pastor Melissa

Last week I ran across an article called, “Worship Is About More Than Personal Preferences.” written by a Lutheran pastor, Nathan Aaseng, from Wisconsin. And this month, Bishop Elizabeth Eaton wrote an article for the Lutheran magazine entitled, “Worship is the Heart of What We Do.” Why all this talk about the importance of worship? Our lives have become so busy that worship has become one of many options in our already packed weeks. Worship becomes something we do only if we can squeeze it in. But as the church, worship is our central act. It is the time when we gather together with our brothers and sisters in Christ to give thanks and praise to God. Eaton states, “At the heart of what we do is worship, and at the heart of our worship is the crucified and risen Christ. Everything else we do is formed, nourished, sustained and transformed by our life as a faith community gathered around word and sacrament, abiding in the love of God. Without this intentional, regular communion with God and each other it’s not possible for us to speak an authentic word of hope to a broken world — the world God so loves.” Yet too often we make worship about us – our likes and dislikes. I really liked the hymns. Didn’t like the hymns. I want more piano; I want a praise band. And we want it all done in less than 60 minutes! The actual purpose of worship -- encountering God – has been made blurry. Worship isn’t like going through the drive-thru where everyone can pick and choose whether they want fries or onion rings, a shake or a soda, a burger or chicken fingers. Worship is like going to a family dinner and sitting with those brothers and sisters and cousins who you might not prefer to sit with, and eating with them anyway. Worship is not about us, it is about God. “When we gather for worship we hear God’s word of promise; we confess our helplessness; receive forgiveness; we pray; and we welcome new brothers and sisters through baptism, promising to support them in their walk in faith. We are fed with the bread of life and receive our Lord poured out for us. And then we are sent back into the world. Worship is essential for the church’s life and service.” If you haven’t been to worship in a while, we invite you to come. And even if you come every week, we are glad to have you with us. It’s about gathering together with both friends and strangers in Jesus Christ, to be changed by his presence in our midst, and for sharing that good news for the sake of the world. Gather, be changed, share the good news. It’s that simple. See you in worship! Pastor Melissa

Donuts and Coffee Just a reminder that without the support of generous people like you, we would not be able to have donuts and coffee each Sunday in the Fellowship Hall.

First come, first served.

The peace Jesus can give lasts longer and satisfies more deeply than anything we can find in this world. When our souls feel troubled by and uncertain future and cries out for peace, Jesus says “My peace I give to you”.

His peace is not the absence of problems rather the forgiveness of our sins. Peace is not the absence of death rather the sure hope of eternal lives. Peace is not the absence of trouble in this world rather its knowing the presence of Christ. May you seek the peace of Christ in your life and May God grant you a glimpse of the peace that passes all human understanding. See you in worship this Sunday, Pastor Eric

Servant Schoolhouse

“Your kids were made to shine!” Matthew 5:16

It’s hard to believe the school year has ended! It is a sad time for us because we have to say “good-bye” to so many families, but it is also an exciting time to know that many of you will be mov-ing on to new adventures. We would like to say “THANK YOU” to all of you for allowing us to spend these past nine months with your children. Each and every one of them is a special gift from God. We feel privileged that you chose us to help in a small way to help mold their young minds. They are very special kids! Have a fun and safe summer!! Also, be sure to check out our Facebook page at Servant Schoolhouse Preschool! Contact Diane at 763-427-7765 or [email protected] for more information.

2018-19 DISCIPLE OF GOD AWARD RECIPIENTS

Congratulations to the following students who have each received a Disciple of God Award. Awards are granted to students attending college this fall, based upon applications which include faith statements and leadership. As a requirement to receive the scholarship, students will be developing, leading and implementing leadership through projects at Servant of Christ, our local community and their school communities. Please congratulate these students, as each are continuing to grow in their faith and leadership. Ask them about their faith story and leadership project and how you can help!
