Hello Everyone.
Over the next few weeks, all University Campus students will be completing the Attitudes to School Survey. At the senior years of secondary school this survey is something that students can become quite blasé about; not surprising because they have been doing the survey since grade 4. However, it is important that they take the survey seriously. The College and the Campus use the information from this survey to help identify areas of strength that can be built upon and areas of weakness that need to be addressed. If you are talking to students please reinforce this message. And don’t worry, your chance will possibly come later in the year.
Year 12 students are very quickly coming to the end of their secondary schooling and it is critical that all students know what their next step will be when they leave Kurnai. The Careers Team will be meeting with all Year 12 students to help them set out their Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs). It is important that parents play a role in decisions like this; please talk to your students and if you would like to be part of the conversation come to school when the meeting is scheduled or contact the Careers Team to arrange a time that suits you.
When you are reading this, Year 12 student, Noah Nightingale, should just be settling into his training camp in Bielsko Biala, Poland. A few weeks ago, Noah heard that he had been selected to represent Australia in the under 18, 73kg class at the Cadet European Cup, the premiere underage judo competition in Europe. While Noah has been involved in judo since he was six it is only in the last year that he has been chosen to take part in representative competitions for Australia.
Noah will spend the first week away training and fighting in Poland before traveling to Coimbra in Portugal for the next competition in the Cadet European Cup. So two weeks of training, fighting and (he promises) studying in Europe before he returns to Australia on 31st May. We wish Noah well and hope that he achieves his goals. Ganbatte!!!

UNIVERSITY CAMPUS - PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS
Term 1 Attendance at the University Campus
The whole College has been focussing on improving its overall attendance since the beginning of Term 1 this year. The last few years have seen absence rates at a level where they were beginning to be of real concern and would have been impacting on student learning. As a result, the College has put resources towards turning the tide of unnecessary absences with the aim of making full attendance a top priority in the College.
After one term the attendance figures at the University Campus are very pleasing. The efforts of promoting full
attendance whenever possible and celebrating improved attendance rates in the campus has seen a very good result.
We aim to continue these effort throughout the year so that every student knows that attending everyday is crucial to their learning and that everyday missed is a missed opportunity to learn.
Please take any opportunity at home to discuss and encourage your student to attend everyday because its NOT OK TO BE AWAY.
Business Management Yakult Excursion
On Friday 26th of April students from Year 11 and 12 Business Management classes travelled to Dandenong to the Yakult Factory. Students were able to take part in a factory tour, observing the different processes used by the factory to make its fermented milk product. This included the vats where the powdered milk, bacteria, sugar replacement and flavor are added, the machines that manufacture the plastic bottles from plastic pellets, and the automated production line that packages the fermented milk into the plastic bottled and caps them. The factory tour links to several parts of the Business Management Study Design, and provided a real life example of the theory students learn in action. `

Term 3 Practice Exams
At Kurnai College we want to make sure that every student achieves their full potential so they feel prepared to leave us at the end of the year ready to take on every opportunity that is provided to them. In order to help achieve this, practice examinations will take place during the Term 3 holidays to ensure that students know what to expect for their final exams at the end of the year. All students who are completing a Unit 3 and 4 subject this year are expected to attend their practice examinations during this holiday period where they will be provided with the experience of undertaking exams in similar conditions as their final ones at the end of October. Once these exams are completed students will receive detailed feedback on their results as well as areas to improve upon. This will help your child to develop a revision plan as well as provide further development of skills ready for their final exam.
A timetable for practice exams will be given out this term to allow students the opportunity to organise time for their exams as well as holiday lectures and general revision time during this holiday period.

Career Focus – Social Worker
Social workers help people to deal with personal and social problems, either directly or by planning or carrying out programmes that benefit groups or communities. They are interested in challenging the structural barriers that contribute to inequality, discrimination, exploitation and oppression within communities. Social workers can specialise in a range of different practice areas such as; children and family, youth, violence and sexual assault, medical and health, child protection, income support, disability, education, aged care, correctional services, family law, youth justice, community legal, psychiatric and general mental health, refugees and migrants and indigenous communities. They are employed in a variety of community and welfare fields across state, territory and federal government departments; hospitals, community health centres, local government authorities or non-government organisations. Some social workers are self-employed, working as counsellors, therapists and consultants. With the broad academic and practical training, qualified social workers may also work in non-social work areas such as project officers, policy makers, managers or administrators. Within the different areas that social workers can work, their responsibilities can include:
Provide counselling and support through a crisis that may be due to death, illness, relationship breakdown or other reasons.
Provide clients with information about services that can assist them.
Provide letters of referral or reports that will help clients to obtain other services such as crisis accommodation or social security benefits.
Guide small groups of people to share their experiences, support each other and learn social skills.
Assist community groups to plan and carry out programs to help themselves (for example, assisting groups to form an association).
Research community problems, needs and solutions through client contact and records of welfare and health agencies.
Analyse statistics and write reports.
Develop policy and evaluate programs.
Manage and train staff.
Attend professional meetings.
Lobby to change social welfare policies and procedures in the pursuit of social justice for all members of the community. To work in this field, it is important to have:
Emotional maturity.
Keen analytical abilities.
Ability to view other people’s problems objectively.
Good organisational and communication skills.
An ability to work independently or as part of a team.
A commitment to social justice. To become qualified as a social worker, you usually have to complete a degree in social work at university. To gain entry into these courses you usually need to gain your VCE with English. However, you will need to contact your chosen institutions for course requirements and further information.
