Letter from our new Chief Development Officer, Karen Santangelo
Dear Friends,
I am deeply honored to be in my role here at
PeaceHealth because of its commitment to serving
all who need care, regardless of their ability to pay.
PeaceHealth Southwest has been ensuring the health of
our community for more than 160 years and is an integral
part of creating a vibrant southwest Washington.
We cannot live fulfilling, passionate lives if we are not
well and it’s evident that the people in this community
care deeply for one another: from those who have
included PeaceHealth in their wills, caregivers who make
regular payroll deduction gifts and donors who make
major gifts.
I feel such gratitude to be a part of a hospital with
a strong philanthropic history, where clinicians and
donors work together to initiate and maintain innovative
programs and services.
You are why I took this position, and together we will
support a healthy future for our friends, family and
neighbors. Community support for this hospital has
enhanced our services and transformed our spaces, to
benefit all who come through our doors.
It is a great honor to work with you on fulfilling a shared
mission of caring for others.
Warmly,
Karen Santangelo

We had over 100 guests attend this festive night celebrating a wonderful year
of philanthropy at the hospital. During the evening we heard remarks from
Sean Gregory, Chief Executive, and enjoyed viewing the Christmas Ships out
on the Columbia River. Thank you to all that attended!
Mark the evening of Saturday, October 19, 2019
on your calendars for A Starry, Starry Night Gala
at the Vancouver Hilton to benefit the
Jaime Wyatt Miller Cancer Compassion Fund.
Under the leadership of Gala Chair Terry Prill, A Starry, Starry Night will raise
funds to help low-income cancer patients at PeaceHealth Southwest with the
costs of transportation to their medical appointments, clothing, food and other
necessities while they are receiving treatment.
The first $250,000 in contributions made through the gala will be matched by
Janis and Dan Wyatt, Jaime’s parents, and Andy Miller, her husband. Jaime died
at the age of 42 in May 2018 of breast cancer.
“We are so grateful to Janis, Dan and Andy for their incredible generosity,” says
Terry Prill. “Everyone who knew Jaime is thrilled that this fund will be named in
her memory. Jaime had an army of friends who will be active in planning the gala
and soliciting support for the fund. It’s going to be an outstanding event.”
Cancer care is expensive and can be lengthy. It causes serious stress for
all patients, but particularly those who are low-income. Simply getting to
appointments can be a challenge for those with limited means.
“Nearly everyone in southwest Washington knows someone who has suffered
from cancer,” says Prill. “The Jaime Wyatt Miller Cancer Compassion Fund
will help economically vulnerable patients access high-quality cancer care at
PeaceHealth Southwest.”

Other members of the gala planning committee are Linda Angelo, Barbara
Boyer, Joan Cavanagh, Kathy Corwin, Jen Delich, Jo Marie Hansen, Jill Griffith,
Andy Miller, Kiersten Palmersheim, Jessica Perdue and Midge Ruiz.
The gala will include a variety of ways to give including a live auction and
paddle raise.
The Jaime Wyatt Miller Cancer Compassion Fund will be endowed and will last in
perpetuity. It is one of three goals of the Foundation’s $10 million Giving Strength Cancer Campaign. The other two goals are the total renovation of the inpatient
cancer unit in the Mother Joseph Building, which provides care to medically
fragile cancer patients; and the development of an enlarged and enhanced
comprehensive outpatient cancer center which will allow patients to receive a
variety of cancer treatments and consult with their oncology physician in one
comfortable, modern setting.

Giving Strength Cancer CampaignConstruction will begin on our inpatient cancer unit soon. Thanks to
generous donors we are halfway to our goal for this project. An additional
$1.6 million is still needed to convert this wing to all private rooms, larger
bathrooms and space for family members to be with their loved ones
being treated for cancer. For information about this campaign, please

Thank you, Carol Van Natta
In January we celebrated Carol Van Natta’s 5 ½ years
of service to PeaceHealth. Under her expert leadership
the Foundation has raised millions of dollars to
support our patients. From completing the $10 million
Neuroscience Campaign, to launching the current
$10 million Giving Strength Cancer Campaign, to many other projects
like the Ray Hickey House kitchen renovation and charity care funds for
patients in need, she has helped transform our hospital. And, we are
deeply grateful. We wish her all the best as she enjoys a much-deserved
retirement after a 40-year career as a fundraising professional. All the
communities she touched across the country are better because of her
passion and dedication for making a difference.
