Fellow Legionnaires & Members of Post 91,Happy holidays to all. I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I hope your holidays will be enjoyable and the New Year finds everyone well.

We had some great events at the Post in the past couple of months. There was the S.A.L. steak roast, clam bake, A.L.R. Halloween party, Ladies Auxiliary children’s Halloween party, S.A.L. tailgate party, Veteran’s day lunch and dinner, Night at the Races, Sunday Browns game day, and the A.L.R. breakfast on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Check the calendars for the up coming events. Sign up for the work party and enjoy a great breakfast cooked by your Commander, it happens every 2nd Saturday of the month.

The Post is growing in numbers and I welcome all our new members. Our Post continues to grow and it is because we continue to improve our Post and plan and carry out many events. The different parts of the American Legion being the Ladies Auxiliary, S.A.L. and Legion Riders are a major factor in the success of American Legion Post 91. We have a lot to offer.

I started something new with the approval of the executive board. It is the Commander’s Recognition Award. I look at it as a way to recognize individuals at the Post that go above and beyond to help with the many things that are needed to keep our Post viable and the American Legion strong. The Post awarded the first 3 recipients of this recognition to Ralph ‘Rocky’ Rokowski, George Masie, and Mel Baher. They are individuals that do not look for recognition, but deserve it. They do what they do for their love of the American Legion and American Legion Post 91. They are mentors to me and I thank them from the bottom of my heart.

If given the chance, thank a Vet.

For God and Country,Tony Mazzeo

Bob Hope Christmas Show

One of the few constants of the Vietnam War—one eagerly anticipated by American troops, that is—was the annual Bob Hope Christmas Show. From 1964 to 1972, Hope included South Vietnam on his annual trips to visit troops during the holiday season, a tradition that started for him during World War II. “Back in 1941, at March Field, California…I still remember fondly that first soldier audience,” Hope once said. “I looked at them, they laughed at me, and it was love at first sight.”

While only a small fraction of the 2.5 million troops who served in Southeast Asia actually got to attend Hope’s performances, for those who did he managed to break the monotony, ease the loneliness and give the troops in combat zones across Vietnam a couple of hours of laughter—and a memory for a lifetime. Bob Hope’s classic opening monologues of rapid-fire jokes always took jabs at the GIs and the specifics of the local situation.

Under a hot sun or a driving rain, his young audiences laughed and cheered the legendary comedian and his cast of singers, dancers and the musicians of Les Brown and his Band of Renown. Hope’s shtick included a constant, sometimes bawdy banter with the other performers, taking plenty of shots at the absurdities of military life while conveying a real sense of how difficult it was for the troops to be away from home during the holidays.

Hope began taking his show on the road after the United States entered World War II and the United Service Organization (USO) started sending Hollywood and radio entertainers to perform for military audiences at bases in North Africa, Europe and the South Pacific. Already a giant movie and radio star, Hope traveled overseas six times, logging more than a million miles during World War II. At the outset of the Cold War in 1948, when the Soviets closed all ground travel from West Germany to Berlin, Hope’s show followed the reserves sent by President Harry Truman to facilitate the airlift into the western sectors of Berlin. Later, Hope traveled to Korea in the early 1950s after North Korean troops invaded South Korea, and all during the 1950s his show played at military bases in Japan. By the 1960s, Hope’s Christmas shows for troops overseas had become a fixture of America’s traditional holiday season.

As early as 1962, Hope wanted to go to Vietnam to perform for the growing contingent of American military advisers. Although planning moved at a steady pace for a 1963 show, the Pentagon ultimately pulled the plug on it because of what it considered too high a risk. Nevertheless, at age 61, Hope persisted and won approval for his first Vietnam shows in December 1964. With his new destination came a new twist to the shows: They would be filmed to be broadcast as holiday specials in early January of the next year.

Hope remained the star and the driving force behind his tours. Other leading performers such as Connie Stevens, Ann-Margret and Joey Heatherton welcomed the opportunity to join him, despite the stress of travel into a far-flung war zone and the hardships they encountered there. Hope’s Vietnam engagements were among the most dangerous ever for the funnyman and his entertainers.

On December 15, 1964, Hope’s contingent left Los Angeles aboard a military transport aircraft large enough to carry the support staff and all the entertainers, including Les Brown and his band, the reigning Miss World, Anita Bryant, actresses Janis Paige and Jill St. John and comic actor Jerry Colonna, who had been part of Hope’s group during World War II.

The first show in Vietnam, on Christmas Eve, began almost immediately upon landing at Bien Hoa air base, which the Viet Cong had bombed in November, destroying many aircraft. As soon as Hope reached the stage, he opened with a hearty “Hello, advisers! I asked Secretary McNamara if we could come and he said, ‘Why not, we’ve tried everything else!’ No, really, we’re thrilled to be here in Sniper Valley. What a welcome I got at the airport…they thought I was a replacement.”

Mel Baher, 1st Vice Commander- The “early bird” program has ended as of Veterans Day. More than 500 of our Post members received their “early bird” bird sticker leaving only about 70 members who still have yet to pay their 2012 membership dues. As a reminder if you have NOT paid your 2012 dues by December 31st, you door card will be de-activated and you will no longer be eligible for the weekly drawing, let alone have access to the canteen. Those ringing “the bell” after December 31st, to gain access to our canteen, will be asked to kindly pay their dues, before they can be served. So if you are one of the few who remain “unpaid” why not sit down right now and send us a check, or better yet drop it off at your Post before the deadline. Before I leave the Veterans Day topic, I would like to express my “THANKS” to the Ladies Auxiliary for the fine luncheon they served to our Post members, and also to our “SONS” who prepared and served a wonderful spaghetti dinner. Everyone I spoke with thoroughly enjoyed both meals; Thanks Again!

Now back to membership. Since I started paying dues (1988), I have seen membership dues increase from $18.00 to $25.00 and finally to $30.00. There is now a convenient way to AVOID future increases. The American Legion National organization has set-up a 36 month payment plan for the “PAID UP FOR LIFE” program, if you so desire. And you can take advantage of our Post “reduced rate” to help further erase the possibility of being faced with any future membership dues increases. If you are interested in the PUFL program, please contact me or any Post officer for the paperwork, you’ll be glad you did.

Still looking to attain the ALL TIME HIGH number (600) for this new membership year, and you can be a BIG help. Please consider asking your friends, neighbors, acquaintances, and even someone in uniform, the question; DO YOU BELONG TO THE AMERICAN LEGION? If the answer is no, then here is your opportunity to bring them to one of the BEST American Legion Posts in the state of Ohio.

I hope everyone had a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. In closing I’d like to wish everyone. A very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY and prosperous NEW YEAR to all!

For God and Country - Thank You!

Sheri Krepelka, President- The holidays are upon us and this is the busiest time for the Ladies Auxiliary. We went to Wade Park and visited the veterans on the 6th and 4th floors. We gave them ditty bags with hygiene products, a goody bag and a bag of fruit. We also gave them afghans and lap robes. Thank you to those who donated or made the items given to these veterans.

The Children’s Halloween party was a big success. The winners of the costume contest were very, very cute. Thanks to the Junior and Senior members of the Ladies Auxiliary who helped that day. Special thanks to the Riders for allowing us the use of their decorations. Veterans day was a huge success. A special thanks goes out to Vickie and her crew. They did an excellent job and no one went home hungry.

Watch for the Giving Tree in the canteen after Thanksgiving. There are so many families that are in need of help this year. I would hate to see a child go without a gift from Santa. I personally will be looking for tags for the elderly this year. In the past month I have visited several nursing homes. I will be volunteering at one of the nursing homes one hour a week and it is greatly appreciated by the residents.

December 10th is the Children’s Christmas Party. It starts at noon with entertainment, and at 1PM Santa arrives. Please do not forget to bring a gift for your child to be put under the tree. Bring your cameras. The sign up sheet is in the canteen. Sign up before December 2nd and your child will receive a letter from Santa.

From the members and officers of the Ladies Auxiliary have a blessed Holiday.

God Bless Post 91, God Bless America and our troops no matter where they are.

Nancy Doutt, Membership Chairman- Early bird stickers have come and gone. Our next goal is to have all current members renewed by December 31, 2011. If your dues are not paid by year end, you are considered delinquent and your benefits as an Auxiliary member are terminated and your access to the canteen and the privileges that go with it, are also cut off. Please renew by December 31st to eliminate a paperwork nightmare. If you have sponsored a Junior, they do not receive notices but their dues can easily be paid with a $5.00 bill. The Juniors are quite active with general Auxiliary projects and their own projects at our Post and in the District.

Nancy Doutt, Community Service Chairman- Plant a Row Another growing season has come and gone, and thanks to our resident gardener, Richie Terwoord, we were able to donate 354 lbs. of fresh vegetables to four local food pantries in Berea and Brook Park. A thank you also goes to Michal Hudak, who delivered the produce.

Sheri Krepelka, Junior Auxiliary Advisor- I am so excited about the new juniors that have joined us in the last few months.

They have decided that we need to have 2 meetings a month. So we started October off with a bang. We worked meetings making items to decorate the doors of veterans at 2 nursing homes. November 5th we visited Parkside Villa and Century Oak care center. We decorated the doors of 24 Veterans. Thanks to Vickie Chaney we were able to give them flag pins and hats of the branch of service they were in. I hope you all saw the picture and article in the Sun News about our visit.

The girls also have a Joe for Joe project where we are sending coffee to the troops over seas. You can see the large coffee mugs in the canteen and serving area by the canteen for donations. This project will be on going until April 2012. We just sent coffee for 30 troops and getting ready to send more soon.

The girls have also adopted a platoon in Afghanistan; there is a box in the canteen with a list of items that the platoon has requested. Please help us help these guys and girls stay over there easier.

At our last meeting we made 200 candy canes to go to Wade Park for over the holidays.

They will be going with the bags that the Ladies Auxiliary prepares to send with items for Christmas.

Any young ladies between the ages of 7 and 17 are more than welcome to join us. We are opening up our meetings to the younger S.A.L. members. We have had one join us at our meetings. We are planning more field trips in the future and helping the veterans and the community anyway we can.

Santa Prepared To Return To Post 91Santa is checking his list and finding out who is naughty and who is nice. He will make his yearly visit to Post 91 on Saturday December 10th at noon. The Berea police and fire department have assured the Post that Santa will arrive on time, with their help. As always Santa will arrive on the hook and ladder escorted by Berea’s finest. All members’ children and grandchildren, 10 and under, are invited to attend this yearly event. Just sign your child up at the canteen and provide a small gift that Santa can give to the child. Last day for signup will be December 9th. Remember to have the child’s name on the present. The women’s Auxiliary will provide pizza, soda and goodies for everyone in attendance.

Bob Hope (continued)The Bob Hope Christmas tours continued to go to Vietnam until 1972. On the last tour, the group spent less time in Vietnam because of the drastic decrease in the number of American troops by then. That year Hope greeted the Marines at Da Nang with, “Wonderful to be working for you leftovers!” But, he quickly added: “You guys are lucky because you get to go home, not like our representatives at the Paris Peace Talks.”While steady troop withdrawals meant smaller audiences, there was no less commitment and enthusiasm from the performers. And even though they spent less time in Vietnam, the grueling 1972 Christmas tour lasted more than two weeks with shows at bases in the Philippines, Singapore, Guam and a Christmas morning performance for 1,200 SeaBees at Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.

Clearly, after nine consecutive Christmas trips to Vietnam, Hope was tired, and he was also suffering from a serious eye condition. In addition, he was increasingly criticized because of his vocal support for a war that much of the public had turned against. Vietnam tore the nation apart and Hope got caught in the fray. After more than three decades of making troops around the globe laugh during wartime and peacetime, he found himself defending his commitment. For those who saw him perform in Vietnam, his shows made them feel they were not forgotten in an unpopular war and that their sacrifices—in their war—were as important as the “Big One” in which their fathers fought.

During the final montage of photos and film of his last televised Vietnam Christmas special in 1972, Hope narrates film footage of Long Binh shot a year earlier, bustling with troops. “Well,” he said, showing the new footage of a deserted Long Binh, overgrown with weeds, “this is how [it] looks now…and this is how it should be…all those happy, smiling, beautiful faces are gone. But most of them are really where they belong, home with their loved ones.”

Judith Johnson recently retired as a professor and history department chair at Wichita State University.

Editor g Post By The Lake

Ron Fazekas, Editor- Another interesting article I received on my e-mail... a young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be very liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favor of higher taxes to support more government programs, in other words redistribution of wealth. She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch conservative, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.

One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the need for more government programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school. Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she wastaking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn’t even have time for a boyfriend, and didn’t really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.

Her father listened and then asked, “How is your friend Audrey doing?” She replied, “Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on the college campus. She’s always invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn’t even show up for classes because she’s too hung over.” Her wise father asked his daughter, “Why don’t you go to the Dean’s office and ask him to deduct 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0 that way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA.” The daughter, visibly shocked by her father’s suggestion, angrily fired back, “That’s a crazy idea, and how would that be fair! I’ve worked really hard for my grades! I’ve invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!” The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, “Welcome to the conservative side of the fence.”

If you ever wondered what side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!If a conservative doesn’t like guns, he doesn’t buy one.If a liberal doesn’t like guns, he wants all guns outlawed. If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat.If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone. If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.If a conservative doesn’t like a talk show host, he switches channels.Liberals demand that those they don’t like be shut down.If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn’t go to church.A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced. (Unless it’s a foreign religion, of course!)If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it. A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.If a conservative reads this, he’ll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.A liberal will delete it because he’s “offended.”*Well, I shared it with you!*.
