Merriwa Relay for Life was recently awarded with a very prestigious award at the 2016 State Summit; Highest Amount raised per capita.

“This is a huge award that really goes to show how important regional areas are in the grand scheme of things” said Clint Ekert, Cancer Council NSW. “This award is presented to the Relay for Life event with the highest amount of fundraising based on the population of the town”

The Highest Fundraising per Capita was awarded to Merriwa Relay with just under $10.00 per person based on the population.

“This figure is well over other areas who are closer to the $3.00 per head mark, it just goes to show that you don’t have to be in a big town to make a real difference in the fight against cancer” said Clint

Relay for Life Raises funds in Merriwa to fund Transport to Treatment, easing the financial burden on patients who are undergoing treatment.

Relay for Life in Merriwa is on again in 2017, with details to be announced soon.

“On behalf of the Cancer Council, and the thousands of patients that utilise our services every day, thank you to the Merriwa Relay Committee, and the Merriwa Community for an amazing effort” said Clint.

For More information please contact Clint Ekert, Community Relations Coordinator, Singleton Office.

WHEAT HARVEST IN FULL-SWING ON THE AG PLOT

Students were treated to a two for one deal - an agriculture and history lesson, when Jim Alker demonstrated his Sunshine Harvester (circa 1920) pulled by a 1948 International tractor to students on Friday and Tuesday, collecting approximately 600kg from about 3/4 of an acre of land. Thank you to Jim and his helpers (Barry Archer, Terry Brazier, Tony Houlahan and James Constable)from the Men’s Shed, it certainly was a sight to behold.

HOSPITALITY NEWS

We are late into Term 4 with the Christmas holidays in sight. The hospitality students have been very busy completing their coffee competencies and are now working to prepare other beverages including mocktails. Work placement has been completed for the year by most students and I would like to say a big thank you to all businesses who volunteered their time and establishments to allow students to gain industry knowledge. It is very beneficial to their learning.

The Stage 5 food technology classes have been studying the topic of food product development and exploring how consumers have a say into what is made and put on supermarket shelves. They have completed the formal assessments for the year and are now completing the remaining topic ready to start their Year 11 and Year 10 studies next year.

In Stage 4 technology, the class has been continuing to learn about healthy eating and exploring different foods. I must say that the students in this Technology class have been working fantastically in the kitchen.

I am looking forward to the new year and working with these students in technology again. The sewing machines have been serviced and we will be sewing and decorating fun projects in 2017.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Swimming saves lives and our lessons are going fabulously. Thank you to Mrs Peebles, the teachers and to the parent helpers for making this a very worthwhile experience for all children. It is wonderful to see the growth in confidence in the little ones and the improved technique of the older swimmers. The swimming carnival will take place this Friday.

All the tricks of the trade about Multiplication and Division were learned by parents at last week’s Maths night. It was again a great success. Parents were heard vocalising a lot of enthusiastic “ahas”! Thanks to Miss Farrow for her generosity in running these sessions.

Assessment data has been collected and analysed and teachers are working hard to complete student reports. The goal setting meetings with your teacher and child throughout the year will have already given you a good indication of your child’s progress in general and the report presents this in an updated and formal manner. Reports will be sent home this week. If you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact the school to make an appointment to discuss this with your child’s teacher.

It is the season to be Jolly……. Some celebrations that our children will be involved in to help set the mood and spirit of Christmas:

• December 11: Christmas Carols in the Park. Our school children will be participating in this community event.

• December 14: St Joseph’s Town Carolling. This year our children will be joined by Merriwa Create and Grow Playgroup, as we carol our way down the main street from 1.45pm to 2.45pm bringing Christmas cheer to the shoppers and business people of Merriwa. Parents are warmly welcome to join us and sing along as well.

• December 15: the students will go to the Merriwa Multi Purpose Centre to sing Christmas Carols to the residents. They will then return to celebrate Christmas with Gummun Place residents.

Thank you to Merriwa Red Cross for the generous donation made last week to assist the pastoral needs in our school community. Yet another

example of the wonderfully caring community we live in.

Congratulations to Mel and Jason Bates for being the first recipients of the new Rotary Recognition Award for their “selfless contribution to the Merriwa Community.”

Congratulations to St Joseph’s ex-student, and current Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music teacher, Katrina Constable, who has been successful in gaining an international career exchange through Rotary’s New Generation Service Exchange Program. Katrina will be going to Germany for six weeks to further her career as a violin teacher.

Kids just want to have fun….recently the unexpected closure of the sports shed resulted in loads of students from all classes taking to the sand pit to play. As the photos show, students of all ages joined together for some awesome tunnel making as well as good old fashioned sand burying.

these will be.

Belonging Day is a St Joseph’s tradition where students are invited to school before the school year starts to meet their 2017 teachers and classmates and decorate their rooms ready for the new school year. This has proven to be a wonderful way of helping ease the student’s anxiety about reconnecting with classmates, going into a new class, having a different teacher and so on.

St Joseph’s Parents and Friends Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday. It is great to have volunteers agreeing to stand for the various positions on the executive. As this had not happened before going to print, the new executive will be announced next week. Thank you to the outgoing executive of Dermot Shannon, Peta Luke and Bronwyn Redgate. You have all done an outstanding job supporting our school community.

Use it or lose it…A reminder to all parents that research shows that if students do not read at all over the holidays, when they return to school, their reading levels will have gone backwards. The children have been working so hard with you and their teachers to make great reading gains throughout the year. Don’t let them go backwards. Keep them reading over the holidays. For our part, the teachers will open the library on a number of days during the school holidays so that students can reconnect and read. We will let you know via the Skoolbag App when days

We are very lucky to have support from the Red Cross. As many of you are aware, the Red Cross sponsor our breakfast club, supplying a variety cereal, milk and spreads. This program has now been expanded to include fruit, which is delivered every Wednesday. Thanks to the generosity of Bloomfield Mine, the program will continue to run next year. We are also very appreciative of our parents and community members who give up their time to run breakfast club each day of the week.

SWIMMING

Our learn to swim program begins on Friday. Notes need to be returned as soon as possible. Due to the fundraising efforts of Mrs Parker, a donation from the Tourist Hotel, and a grant from the Premier’s Sporting Challenge, we have been able to cover the full cost of transport. The P&C have offered to pay for pool entry each day. This means there will be no cost to students for our swimming program this year. We thank everyone who has made an effort to support our program.

Students will need to bring their swimmers, fruit break, recess and a drink with them each day. It is essential that they wear a school hat and a rash shirt.

Students who do not have a rash shirt will not be swimming. Please pack a plastic bag for wet items to go into when we return to school.

This year, lessons will be conducted by Ms Higgins, Ms Bullock, Mrs Darlington, Mrs Shannon and Dimity Parker.

SURFING LESSONS

Notes have been sent out regarding our whole school excursion to Port Stephens for surfing lessons. There is no cost to students, due to the generosity of the P and C who are covering the bus and the lessons.

RED CROSS HEALTHY EATING

Last Tuesday Irena Patsan from the Red Cross visited our school. Students participated in a healthy eating session. They talked about the five food groups and how much of each group you consume every day. They also did a sorting activity to demonstrate their understanding of the material presented. The session finished off with fruit kebabs, which the students made for themselves.

Irena is hoping to return next year to run several “healthy eating on a budget” workshops with parents.

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION

We have thoroughly enjoyed having George Thompson, Charlie Ward, Jeremiah Raines, Marlii Peters and Attalica Nichols with us at school over the last seven weeks. We extend a warm welcome to Charlie Hartup, who joined us last week. Each of the children have grown in confidence since starting Kindergarten Orientation.

This is our last day together for this year. However, we are looking forward to having the children at school every day next year. We would like to thank Mrs Smith for guiding the children through their activities each week. Also thank you to our wonderful buddies: Andrew, Dustynn, Shaneka, Maddie, Riley and Reece for their continual help and support over the past seven weeks.

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Last Sunday Gabbie McLean, Harry Thompson and Andrew Harris travelled to Mudgee as part of the Denman Swimming Club team to compete in a NSW Swimming Qualifying Carnival. George Thompson aged four went as their support person and cheered them on in their races.

This was Gabbie’s first “proper” carnival and she did extremely well in the tough competition. She competed in the 6 Years Girls 25m races for Freestyle, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Backstroke. She just missed out on receiving a medal but swam very well. Harry was all smiles after being awarded four Bronze medals for coming third in Freestyle, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Backstroke 25m events for 7 year old boys. Andrew started off the day with a second in the 10 Years Boys 200m Individual Medley, third in the 10 Years Boys 100m Freestyle, third in the 10 Years Boys 50m Freestyle and finished with a first in the 10 Years Boys 50m Butterfly and first in the 10 Years Boys 100m Butterfly. We look forward to hearing more about their successes in the pool.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK - DYLAN MCLENNAN

Dylan has been awarded the Student of the Week for trying really hard in his two swimming lessons last week. He has already improved his swimming skills by being keen to participate. This is an important skill in learning.

Dylan is consistently polite to students and staff and always greets people with a good morning.

His Aboriginal shelter, including the description, was done to a high standard. Dylan chose to work by himself and he used his time wisely.

During the Craft Group Activity on Wednesday afternoon, he spoke and acted respectfully towards our school friends and thanked them as he was leaving.

He listened to instructions and corrections to improve his drawing of 3D shapes.

Congratulations on your successes, Dylan. You should be very proud of your efforts to have a go, challenge yourself and listen to feedback.

A LOVELY AFTERNOON WITH THE CRAFT GROUP

Last Wednesday, we joined the Cassilis Craft Group at the local bowling club for Christmas Craft activities. Students worked with the ladies to create some impressive cards and tree ornaments ready for Christmas!

SCHOOL TRIP SUBSIDY CHANGESThe Private Vehicle Conveyance subsidy is being phased out and will be replaced by the School Drive Subsidy. More details overleaf.

What’s happening? From 20 December 2016, the Private Vehicle Conveyance (PVC) subsidy will be progressively phased out and replaced by the School Drive Subsidy. The deadline for new applications for the existing PVC subsidy is 20 December 2016.

Parents or guardians currently receiving the existing PVC subsidy can choose to stay on it or switch to the new School Drive Subsidy after 17 January 2017. If they want to remain on the existing PVC subsidy, they don’t need to do anything.

What is the main change? For parents/guardians driving one or more students from the same household to the nearest public transport pick up point or to school, the new School Drive Subsidy will be paid ‘per trip’ (for the complete school trip). This ‘per trip’ payment is different from the current PVC subsidy, which is paid ‘per student’.

How to help parents and guardians make the right choice• Give the parent or guardian the brochure entitled ‘School trip

subsidy changes’.

• Reassure them that they can find out more attransport.nsw.gov.au/schooldrive

• The website also has an online comparison calculatorwhere parents/guardians can check which of the two subsidyschemes is better for them based on their own individualcircumstances.

• If they have more than one student on the existing PVCsubsidy, they should consider staying on it.

More questions? If you have questions about the PVC subsidy or the School Drive Subsidy for parents and guardians of children at your school, call 131 500.

Note, parents/guardians can’t be on two schemes at the same time.

If new students are added after 17 January 2017, all eligible students will automatically go onto the new School Drive Subsidy, including existing PVC subsidy students.

MERRIWA VIEW CLUB URGES COMMUNITY TO SHARE CHRISTMAS GIVING WITH CHILDREN IN

NEED

Members of Merriwa VIEW Club are urging the local community to support disadvantaged children with their education by donating to The Smith Family’s 2016 Christmas Appeal.

VIEW stands for the Voice, Interests and Education of Women, boasting more than 16,000 members nationally across 330 clubs, working together in support of children’s education charity The Smith Family.

The Smith Family’s annual Christmas Appeal, is aiming to raise $3.66 million nationally this year. The funds raised will help 8,715 disadvantaged children across Australia get the extra learning and mentoring support they need to create better futures for themselves.

VIEW Club President said: “VIEW is very proud to be supporting The Smith Family’s Christmas Appeal. “Children supported by The Smith Family are from struggling families where affording life’s basics is a struggle; over half live in single parent homes and forty per cent of the children have a disability or health issue”.

“All of these challenges can have a negative impact on a child’s ability to participate at school, and without extra support, these children are likely to fall behind, have difficulty catching up and become disengaged with their education.

“We know that education is a pathway out of poverty and The Smith Family’s learning support programs have proven highly effective in boosting the educational outcomes of disadvantaged children.

“Supporting The Smith Family’s Christmas Appeal is a wonderful way to help disadvantaged children get the extra learning support they need to catch up and keep up at school.

“In the spirit of giving and sharing this Christmas, we urge the community to support a disadvantaged child’s future by donating to The Smith Family’s Christmas Appeal.”

The Smith Family CEO Dr Lisa O’Brien said: “We’re incredibly grateful for the support of VIEW in reaching out to the community to encourage donations to our Christmas Appeal.” To make a donation to The Smith Family’s Christmas Appeal visit www.thesmithfamily.com.au or call 1800 024 069.

PEW REFLECTIONS - Matthew 3:1-12

If John appeared in our Churches today, what would we make of him? Smile at his delusion? ‘Be embarrassed by his challenge? Be angered by the upset to our normal religious routines? If these questions cause discomfort, John caused discomfort in his time, so much so that he was thrown into prison and executed. John preaches the coming of God. Nothing about him is attractive – the environment is the harsh Judean wilderness, his clothes and food are bizarre and his message ‘Repent’ is hardly an advertising slogan. And yet people come to him, Jerusalem, all Judea and the whole Jordan district go to him for baptism. People can recognise truth. It may not be attractive, some may prefer to avoid it, but we cannot fully hide from the truth. John speaks to the truth of God. God is near. God is coming. Is your life open to receive God or not?

The word translated as ‘repent’ means something like ‘change your way of being, change your heart’ – metanoia. John doesn’t go into details of how to do this. Exactly what ‘metanoia’ means is left to each individual. All John demands is a true change of heart. This is why he is critical of the Jewish leaders who are presented here as just going through the motions. They want the ritual of baptism without doing the hard work of seeking the truth in their lives. Rituals are easy. Truth seeking costs. As we prepare yet again for the celebration of God’s coming, may we approach it at the level of our hearts, even if that calls for some changes.

From “Sundays under the Southern Cross” By Mary Coloe PBVM

Merriwa RotaryROTARY NEW GENERATIONS PROGRAM

Details of this new Rotary program were given in the last Ringer. At our meeting of November 22 we were delighted to host Katrina Constable who will be our club’s first participant in the program. Katrina, daughter of James and Lesley Constable will be spending roughly seven weeks over the Christmas period in Germany where she will be hosted by the Rotary Club of Dortmund.

Katrina is an accomplished pianist and violinist and will be able to work with local musical groups while she is in Germany.

Brian Oakley, who also attended our meeting, gave an excellent talk on the workings and successes of the program.

During the coming year, Rotary Merriwa hopes to host our first incoming guest under this program.

Anyone in the district who would like to know more about the program, with a view to possible participation, can obtain good information on the internet, by searching “Rotary 9670 New Generation Exchange”.

A reminder any local student going on to further studies, may apply for the Rotary Merriwa ANGUS PEEBLES BURSARY.

Details are in the last Ringer. Application forms are available at the Merriwa Newsagency.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING!

December is here and Christmas is almost upon us! Unless you thrive on the last-minute stress, now is the time to be getting organised. Cards need to be sent, presents bought and wrapped. Lay-bys have to be organised.

Before you start your Christmas menu, the first thing you need to do is test-run all of the meal ideas you have and home-made food presents so that you want to make in order to have them perfect for Christmas Day - I have test-run the Family Circle Gingerbread Cake twice now (and used the staff here as guinea pigs) and now have it perfected! There are many great magazines in store right now filled with ideas for the table (including decorating it for the day) and home-made gift ideas.

PLAY SCHOOL

When I opened the box of goodies from ABC Kids, I reminisced about those innocent days when Play School was the BEST show on TV and how Little Ted was my favourite (followed closely by Jemima, of course), and Benita was the best presenter. To this day I still have the bear that I was given when I was born.

With all this in mind, the Play School range is the perfect present for the newly born, for the Firts Christmas, for the toddler who loves Play School, for the Christening, Baptism or Naming Day. There is Big Ted, Little Ted, Humpty Dumpty and Jemima. There are also several different versions of B1 and B2 (who have always been regulars on Play School, even after scoring their own show!) including ones that speak.

Keeping on the ABC Kids theme, we also have a very cute range of Giggle and Hoot characters on our plush range, including Hoot, Hootabelle, Hootley, Gigglesaurus, and Gigglepaws. They are the perfect cuddle size for any toddler!

If the little girl in your life is a fan of the Wiggles, especially Yellow Wiggle, Emma, then we have the perfect gift idea for her. We have Wiggle Emma dolls, and Wiggle Emma Dress up Dolls. They are on the shelves now.

‘Disability’ is an umbrella term covering impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions. A person may also be seen to be ‘with disability’ if he or she has had impairment in the past, or based on a personal or group standard or norm. One in five, or more than 4 million, Australians have some form of disability. One in three Australians either have a disability or are close to someone who has a disability.

Disabilities range from relatively minor to severe. The likelihood of living with disability increases with age – 31% of 55-64 year olds are living with disability, while 88% of people aged 90 and over have a disability. One in six Australians are affected by hearing loss, while Vision Australia (a leading national provider of blindness and low vision services in Australia) estimates there are currently 357,000 people in Australia who are blind or have low vision.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports people with a permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to take part in everyday activities. The NDIS is gradually being rolled out nationally over three years from 2016 to 2019. The NDIS works with people to identify the supports needed to achieve goals in many aspects of life, such as independence, involvement in the community, education, employment, and health and wellbeing. It also focuses on early intervention where getting early support can reduce the impact of disability. Further information on the scheme is available at www.ndis.gov.au

partners in the support of people with disability. One of the aims of the NDIS is to better support carers in their caring role. While the focus of an NDIS participant plan is the person with disability, the support from the participant plan may also have direct or indirect benefits for families and carers.

The United Nations (UN) is a major driver of the recognition of equality for people with disability. The International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is a UN initiative that aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability, as well as celebrate the achievements and contributions of people with disability. This day is observed annually, on December 3, and has been supported by the Australian Government since 1996. Each year the UN announces a theme – the theme for 2016 is ‘Achieving 17 Goals for the Future We Want’. This draws attention to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, and how these goals can create a more inclusive and equitable world for people with disabilities.

The International Day of People with Disability is unique among community awareness days. It unites disability organisations; businesses; federal, state and local governments; and the community. The day is a collaborative effort to celebrate and acknowledge the experience and expertise of people with disability.

Your local pharmacy is your health destination. There are many products and services your pharmacy can offer to assist people with disabilities. These include mobility aids, compression garments and medicine management services. If you live with disability, or if you care for someone who does, visit your local pharmacy and find out what they can offer.

Carers play a huge role in supporting people with disability to lead fulfilling lives. These carers also need support. To meet the need for more information about how we can better take care of carers, the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) has developed a Self Care Fact Card titled Carer support. This Fact Card is available from Merriwa Pharmacy. Other Self Care Fact Cards may also be useful depending on your individual situation – ask your pharmacist.

Before taking the field, the Bunnan team joined with us in a one minute silence as a mark of respect for two much loved friends of our club and district, Cassie Porter and Dr Bronwyn Stokes; two special ladies who have been a huge part of our community and who will be sadly missed by all. Rest in peace.

Winning the toss gave us the opportunity to bat first and our openers Murray and James were quickly amongst the runs. After a good start, a few quick wickets had us at 3/40 before another sound partnership of 96 between Will (75) and Seth (40) settled the ship and put us back on task for a good total. A good contribution from Jon towards the end of our innings helped our score along to 194 with the team once again batting out our 40 overs for the loss of only six wickets. Great for the team but a little frustrating for our tail enders who missed out on a bat, but I’m sure the end result was worth the sacrifice!

Heading out to defend, our opening bowlers Will and Pat were giving nothing away and with a beautiful ball from Pat knocking off the bails in the second over and a direct hit by Jay-me for a runout in the third, Bunnan were 2/0. Pat and Will continued to trouble the batsmen with great support with the ball from Seth, James, Mike and Jay-me. Pat finished with a season best of 4/17 off his 8 overs and Will continued his successful and economical run with 2/15. There was a huge improvement in the field this week with held catches and tight defence keeping the scoring rate under control. Well done to all our team for their commitment to chase down those balls no matter what! Special mention to Bailey and Mick who always impress with their determination to beat that ball to the fence! The game was over in the 30th over with Bunnan, a man short, all done on 9/120.

This week we’re here again to meet Belmore Bulls 2, commencing 1.00pm at No 1 Oval. We always appreciate some home town support so come and cheer us along. Thanks to Craig, Sonya and girls we have lots of refreshments available in the canteen.

We are loving the buzz down at the track on Monday nights. Great kids and camaraderie make the time fly by! And fly through the air, many young athletes did last Monday night – in a good way.

In the Tiny Tots, Oscar Swan won a coaches award for running within the lines with great power and gusto! Well done to Paige Carrall for her attentive listening and great high jump skills. Annabelle Hunt for always carrying with her a positive attitude and her enormous throws in shotput while Jayden McPhie received his coaches award for his fabulous flying starts and thundering finishes in the 200m. Congratulations athletes.

We are starting to get into the ‘business end’ of the season with Zone qualifiers just around the corner. Thank you to everyone who signed up to Zones last week, this is our largest team to date – 19 athletes!

To help prepare our Zone team, we will be offering additional training session on Wednesday evenings from 5.30pm to 6.30pm for those that would like to practice their events. (No BBQ, just bring your own drink bottle and plenty of energy!).
