FEMALES OF MERIT Bred Heifer & Heifer Calf SALE

The Merit cowherd began its developmentin 1984 with the purchase of two heifer calves atthe Masterpiece sale. One of those females,PJT Pride 84S, produced to the age of 15 andbecame an anchor of our program. In the yearsthat followed premium females were added fromselect sales and dispersals. Some cow familiesflourished, and those families are represented inthis offering.

We have always been critical of type, footstructure, and udder quality. Cattle that didn’tmake the grade were culled without reservation. The Merit cowherd has excelled in a rugged andpractical environment. We have distanced our-selves from the trends and fads and concen-trated our efforts on producing sound functionalfemales with the ability to raise the kind of bullsthat the commercial industry continues to de-mand.

No less than ten of the herdbulls that factorinto this offering stem from cows that havewalked our pastures. By concentrating the ge-netic influence of cattle that are functionallysound, we have eliminated the guess work.

This “Females of Merit “offering representsthe very best of the 2010 heifer calf crop. Onlyreplacement quality heifers were kept and bredfor this sale. We have only retained the kid’s 4-H heifers and 2 others with ears frozen too shortto properly tattoo. You will notice that we are, however, offering six “Choice” lots where thebuyer will make their selection and we will takethe other home. Either way, we’ll both win!

The bred heifers carry the service of someof the most exciting outcross bulls available. Wehave used the same criteria to select theseservice sires as we do our herdbulls. They are

all bulls that excel in fertility with way above av-erage scrotal epd’s, docility, calving ease, andperformance while still maintaining geneticuniqueness. The coupons these heifers are car-rying will be an outcross to virtually every pro-gram in the industry. As the North American cowherd rebuilds, there will be an increased de-mand for “heifer bulls”, especially bulls that offergenetic flexibility. This sale provides an uniqueopportunity to add these genetics in volume.

The four heifer calves were selected toshowcase the ability of our first calvers and whatyou can expect from the Bad Lands ImageMaker 65W (aka “Hoo Doo”) service. His sonslook equally promising and will definitely fill amaternal and calving ease niche.

2011 will be remembered as a year oftremendous opportunity in the beef industry. En-viromental and market factors have taken cownumbers to record lows. While the industry re-builds we are poised to take advantage ofrecord prices. Earlier this year Janelle and Iwere given the opportunity to purchase Emileand Sandra’s cowherd. They have chosen to goforward with strictly a commercial Angus basedcow herd, currently numbering 300 and growing. This sale closes a chapter in their history. Nowthe opportunity is yours to access more than 25years of study, scrutiny and selection. The futureis bright and the opportunity is yours to seize!

On behalf of everyone here at Merit, we’d like to welcome you to

the first “Females of Merit” Angus production sale!

A Few Words from Castlerock Marketing...

"Females of Merit" couldn't describe the genetic opportunity any better than what has been

laid out before the Angus world! Going through this catalogue study the cow families, herdsires andof course the females that are being presented.....they all have “Merit”! The herd bulls selectedcome with a purpose in mind and a role to fill in their contribution to the betterment of the herd. They prove themselves in their breeding qualities with the intention of producing sons that willserve a positive influence for the beef industry, purebred or commercial and, likewise, females thatfit the mold, produce in some tough country and are productive, intelligent and most importantly, sound!

The offering consists of outcross genetics that are proven in the working world! This isn't goingunnoticed as their bull sale averaged over $4000 this year - obviously purebred breeders are dis-covering what the commercial breeder has known for a long time - these cattle simply work!

Coming through the ring on Sale Day is really a solid set of sound, functional females that will

get the job done. Whether it be the Insight, Luke, Ideal, Forte or the Moneymaker females, they areright for the times. The services from “Hoo Doo”, Hoover Dam, Chisum and Black Cedar (whosesemen was brought into Canada for limited use making his service extra special) are current andexciting as they, too, offer alternative genetics without compromising the basic fundamentals - allmarketable genetics that enhance your next purchase!

Join us for this opportunity and seize the genetics from some of the most diligent breeders youwill find. On behalf on Castlerock Marketing and Merit Cattle Co consider this your invitation to seewhat these genetics can do for your herd.

See you Sale Day!

Luke is a calving ease specialist without sacrificing muscle and performance. His progeny exhibit “true” Angus character. Luke is in the top 5% for low birthweights and milk. Luke daughters are making nice ranch females. They are hardy and have ex-cellent hoof structure, well balanced, tidy udders and are very maternal. Luke has traditionally been our reliable “go to” bull for heifers. He is very mod-erate in stature. At 8 years of age Luke is very athletic and super sound. He hasbeen used to cover females for Merits early calving and Ringsteads later calving pro-gram. The Luke daughters in the offering are the largest sire group represented, it’s agreat opportunity to put some the these females together as they are cookie cutteruniform. Insight has surpassed all our expectations. He is siring sons with true Anguscharacter, muscle, eye appeal, additional scrotal, good temperament in a moderatepackage. Insight sons were well received by our commercial and purebred cus-tomers alike. They were the “buzz” at our 2011 bull sale, averaging $4155 on 17sons. The first group of Insight daughters are now in production - they all did a good

job on their calves. Insight daughters have excellent udder type as well.Insight does so many things right in consistantly producing good bulls and femalesthat fit the bill. Insight’s dam, granddam, and great-grandam are all Pathfinder designated fe-

males in the American registry Even though we are not all about numbers, it’s hard not to brag Insight’s EPD’s

up. He is in the top 1% for weaning, yearling, milk and scrotal! He is an easy calving bull, as well, and we have used him with success on ourheifers. Owned by Merit, Rambur and GDAR

Ideal, raised at Sandy Bar Ranch, was a high selling bull at the Short GrassSale to Ringstead Ranch. Trent admired this bull and his half brothers that were of-fered in the sale. 28S, with his exceptional hoof structure, loads of character, greathair and a mild disposition, was Trent’s pick of the bulls. The dam of 28S has produced herdsires for four purebred herds. We made amutually beneficial deal with Ringstead to share Luke and 28S. His sons were re-spected by our commercial buyers and his daughters could possibly be his trade-mark. Unfortunately we lost 28S so that makes his only group of daughters at Meritvery hard to part with.

We have been really impressed with how these Ideal cattle have developed.139X is a deep sided, soft made female. Her dam, 6203, was the first to calve thisyear and she raised an absolute whopper of an Insight heifer calf. The service to Luke should be a great compliment.

When I finally saw his pedigree Iwas excited to find OCC Legacy, Pied Piper and AAR Optima in his tabulation. Wesecured a non-possession 1/3 interest with an agreement that no semen would besold. Equation has consistently sired extra capacity in his daughters and high per-forming sons with large scrotal measurements.

I knew their breeding phi-losophy would mesh with our cows. “ Hoo Doo” was subsequently selected from Bad Lands Angus as a herdsire touse on heifers. His progeny are born easily with loads of vigor. They are stout , softmade and moderate in frame. He should leave some hellish females with HA Image Maker and Daquante26L in his tabulation. The Daquante 26L daughters at Sewalls’ are awesome.
