NOTABLES • Friday night, a new era of Liberty soccer begins, as Kelly Find- ley takes over as head coach of the Flames. Findley begins his 14th year in his head coaching career with previous stops at N.C. State, Butler and Mars Hill. • Liberty returns five starters and eight players who saw signif- icant minutes from last year’s 7-7-1 team. Rafael Castro, Sha- lom Dutey, Ruben Garcia, Matthew Zacyzk and Brogan Eng- bers were each part of the Flames’ starting “11” during 2018. • The Flames added 11 newcomers to their roster for 2019, in- cluding seven transfers. • Entering their second season of ASUN play, the Flames have been picked to finish fourth in the 2019 ASUN Presea- son Coaches Poll. Last season, Liberty posted a 2-3-1 mark in league play, placing fifth • The Liberty men’s soccer program will begin its 45th year on Friday night. The Flames enter the contest, having won six straight season openers. • Rivals in the Big South Conference for many years, Liberty has met Radford the most of any school in program history. Friday’s contest will be the 51st between the Flames and Highlanders. • Liberty will face Incarnate Word in its home opener on Sunday. The Flames and Cardinals have never met on the pitch before. • The Flames do have some continuity in its coaching ranks, as assistants Jose Gomez and A.J. Madero remain from last year’s staff. SECOND YEAR IN ASUNLiberty enters its second year in the ASU Conference, after finishing its first season with a 2-3-1 record during league play. The Flames placed fifth in the conference standings and fell 2-0 to No. 4 seed Jacksonville in the ASUN Quar-terfinals.

LOOKING TO REPLACE OFFENSEThe Flames led the ASUN in scoring offense, last season.Liberty scored 2.13 goals per game to lead the conference. The Flames netted 32 goals and were among the top scoring teams in the country.

However, Liberty’s two top scorers from 2018, All-ASUN first teamers Kevin Mendoza and Tresor Mbuyu, have graduated and moved on to the professional ranks. Mendoza and Mbuyu scored 12 goals apiece in 2018, accounting for 75 percent of the Flames’ goals.

STARTING ALL 15Returning midfielder Ruben Garcia and forward Matthew Zaczyk joined Tresor Mbuyu as the only three Flames to start every Liberty contest, last season.

QUITE THE MARKSMENLiberty ranked 18th in the country in shot accuracy with a 48.1 shot percentage in 2018. The Flames put 6.8 shots on goal per game, 14th best in the nation.

Flames midfielder Kevin Mendoza completed the year as the NCAA Division I leader in shot accuracy. The senior put 74 percent of his shot attempts on goal in 2018.

Liberty finished the year outscoring its opponents, 32-26.
